I am a percussionist and i am 70 years old . This set is one of the best performances i have ever witnessed . Over and above the great musicians , the sound is great , the audience is just as in love with the musicians as they are with the audience . The energy in the venue is off the chart . One of UA-cam's best jazz videos .
This is four masters in their youth at the top of their game. As a life long jazz fan, it just doesn’t get any better than this. I wish I could pay them back for what they contributed to my life, but all I can do is say thank you.
I concur. I called my daughter over and said each one of these musicians is a living legend and you need to know their names. Oh my gosh...the amount of music they've contributed to the world 🌎! Astounding!
You an pay them back by directing as many people as you can into the good graces and to the storied achievements of these messengers of truth and purity of emotions. We are all searching for our true identity and they can at times provide us a glimpse of that core%
Stanley Clarke. I saw him with RTF as a college student in 1983 (Academy of Music), then when they finally returned to Philly 25 years later, I was there (the Mann). Best part is that Stanley Clarke is a native of Philly!
Evry player in this band is out of the world........i Listen to Herbie and Wayne since their Times in Miles' Quintet.....Stanley and Omar......a class of their own! Yessssss
Sometimes in life you may see Michael Jordan do something so spectacular you are speechless , or Tiger Woods in his hay day , make you spill your beer . Then there is the time , that the Sun the Moon and the Earth are all in line. I mean once in a Billion Billion years . This is what you are now listening too . When Omar was playing his solo ... he was not even on Earth ! The sticks played his hands and arms , his feet had a mind of their own . Be glad you where able to witness this rare event . What a song .
Wayne will be remembered up here with Davis and Coltrane. Greats of the 60s, 70s. (80s, 90s Miles) and well.. .Wayne is still here, but Miles and John Coltrane would be 94 years old now .LOL
Just unbelievable if I hadn’t heard it with my own ears. I have heard Hancock play this many times but it just gets better and better. How great it is to re invent the familiar and play a well known number as if it’s the first time. The interaction between the musicians is remarkable.
one of the greatest displays of technical drumming I have ever seen/heard..............it is mind blowing how he does it with such ease.....jazz drummers are a different breed of drummers!
Unreal energy and musical brilliance. Wayne is on fire. Thanks for posting! Great to see the Japanese audience go wild and give these guys the repsonse they deserve.
***** Herbie aime bien taquiner et surprendre ses amis , mais je crois que Omar l'a vu venir et il a super bien reagi ah ah c'est un très grand batteur
I don't think Hancock or Shorter had very interesting solos here to be honest, (and I'm a huge fan of Shorter especially!), so the piece does t have any real interest for me accept Omar getting off...it's always fun to hear a good drummer.
I am Korean. One of the biggest points I am jealous of Japan is that they had numerous chances to see incredible jazz performances like this...This must be a tip of the ice berg 😒
Yes, there were so many great performances in Japan, but also in Europe, specially France. Here in the US, where jazz was born, we've been lucky, too, but for several decades many of the greatest performances were not here. Just grateful to have things like this documented for all of us to enjoy for a long, long time.
Talk about great jazz, this is how it should be heard, live in concert, in front of a huge audience, what perfection these musicians put into the music.
I've never been able to figure that out! Jealousy most likely, because I doubt any of them are better musicians or are able to play as well together in a band like these guys.
Man I love these guys-- four All Star International jazz musicians- playing right dead in the pocket- I had the pleasure of seeing Wayne perform live--several times back in the 1980s-one performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley Ca-in 1981-- with weather report from the look of their dress-- and their youthful faces- I guess this concert was performed late 1980s early 90s? if anyone knows the date of the performance-- let me know- it's a great pleasure to see these Elder Statesmen of Jazz-- performing in earlier times still at the top of their game 🎵
TBH, i can clearly see the energy given back from the audience! and as a musician, when you receive this kind of energy, you give it back to the audience X1000 times more! and you can clearly see it from this amazing performance!
Best fidelity ever, here too ! These guys reinvented the wheel - all of them ! To see them all swept up in this conversation, allowing all to shine - it's what art is all about !
Best I've ever seen from Shorter effen amazing! Percussion provisions up the wazoo from Hakim driven by Stanley and Herbie... woah. See Omar live if you get a chance, he's a precision percussive machine. He tops.
+Louise X Agree completely, wish I had been there, interplay between musicians and musicians and audience out of this world. Every one had a ball.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome music. Everytime I watch/hear this video tears roll down! Superb sync among the musicians and that energy from the audience, wow wonderful. Though each one was amazing, Stanley and Omar solo were out of this world !
WOW I keep this in my stash just so I can remember it was actually as good as it gets! Lets celebrate real musicians; real virtuosos, real talent, this is as fresh and exciting as the day it was recorded. I will never give up my love for true real jazz. May it live in a hay day again like the world has never heard.
heh folks~~~with all regards to the top end~~~Clarke and Hakim deserve credit for foundation and over the top reserves in supply of such~~~i speak from a bassist point of view and i know how under-rated a foundation of any structure can be lost to all that stands upon it~~~peace/out
There is no better place and better time than this to lift any Spirit. Such Gods of music all together here. You guys watching this concert life are to recall this forever
I watch this over and over. Al masters; and having a ball! This is one of the most satisfying versions of this song on YT! As the time passes, I dig Wayne more and more. Funny to see both Omar and Stanley brownosing Herbie at the intro.. and they were RIGHT!
これは、何回観てもみんな凄い。
懐かしいのだけど、今見直すと改めて鳥肌が立つ。

ドラム、オマーハキムのベードラのビーターにトラブルが起きるんだけど、そんなこと微塵も感じさせない。凄いよね。

Agreed. Salute.
Herbie is one of the best ;) and those around him.
I listen to this gig on a regular basis, amazing. Like a daily vitamin !
ABSOLUTELY!
I keep coming back to this, fantastic
This is four masters in their youth at the top of their game. As a life long jazz fan, it just doesn’t get any better than this.
I wish I could pay them back for what they contributed to my life, but all I can do is say thank you.
Well Herbie and Wayne are hardly in their youth, Wayne is over 50 and Herbie is in his 40 ties
OK I showed my age, lol. But this is an older video so they seem young to me.
I concur. I called my daughter over and said each one of these musicians is a living legend and you need to know their names. Oh my gosh...the amount of music they've contributed to the world 🌎! Astounding!

Stanley Clarke. I saw him with RTF as a college student in 1983 (Academy of Music), then when they finally returned to Philly 25 years later, I was there (the Mann). Best part is that Stanley Clarke is a native of Philly!
The bass player is none other than The great Stanley Clarke.
Omar Hakim is just out of this world. This is a great clip.

Ridiculously good power quartet. Omar is a beast. My favorite Weather Report drummer.

some kinda comedian? but that's ok.
Herbie, Wayne, Stanley ... I grew up in jazz listening to these guys ... plug in Omar and Wow!

Legendary, ripping performance. Seriously effortless chemistry here. So happy - and lucky - we all get to watch this.

Japanese are probably the best audience in the world for the his type of event. They're always into it 200%.
We might never hear another performance like this in our lifetimes.
Omar Hakim!!! ...wow!! ... the way he gets it goin with on Herbie's solo...killin it!!
