  • For our recent livestream productions, we've been testing the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro ISO as a dedicated hardware solution to switch between multiple cameras and add effects like dissolves and picture-in-picture. Norm runs through the features of the high-end ISO model, shares our likes and places for improvement, and shows how it can integrate into a home production workflow for live streamers and other content creators.
    Thanks to Blackmagic Design for loaning us this unit for review!

    One small correction: You do not need to have the USB plugged in to configure the stream with the ATEM Software. You can connect to the ATEM Software and configure the all parameters (including streaming) using only the ethernet connection. You simply need to connect to the switcher over IP. So you could have the Ethernet plugged in and record on the disk using the USB-C port simultaneously.
    Later in the video, you did mention that you hadn't delved into this yet.

    Nice review. We've had the same model for the past month for livestreaming primarily, but wanted to record to external SSD simultaneously. Unfortunately, the only output that can record directly is the same USB-C output that sends the webcam signal to the computer. You've shown the ethernet port solution using the blackmagic software and we're going to try it. We have two other workarounds using the HDMI output for streaming instead. Both require extra gear. The cheapest solution is to run the HDMI out through an Elgato cam link and into the computer USB. This is recognized as a webcam. The pricier solution is to run the HDMI out through a Blackmagic Video Assist monitor which has HDMI passthrough and is also recognized as a webcam by the computer with the latest software update from Blackmagic.

    Thanks for the video. One note, the Pro and ISO models will let you do the streaming directly to a single source from the unit if it is connected to a network so you don't have to use a computer to do the streaming. That will free up the USB for recording instead of management if need be.

  • @kccstar

    I've been using the ATEM Pro for a few months. I record to SSD(SanDisk) and stream directly to Facebook and it has worked really well. I use a networked computer to fill in the stream details and hit the start streaming button. The thing I want to add most is a headphone jack. I've used the ATEM Software to tweak the audio, but I have no way to monitor it before going live. Because of the recent price drop, the YoloBox live stream is also a decent contender for this type of production.

    If you record the ISO and locally on the camera. You can bring that all into your project and replace the ISO proxies by 12but bRAW for example. And you don't need to edit in Resolve for that(which still is worth a consideration). Open the project in Resolve and export a FCO roundtrip .XML which opens in Pr. ISO recording or in camera/external raw recording even. Which means you get all the Multican stuff and can do slight adjustments, better color grade for a cinema level export even. Great for events, when you got pocket cameras setup and record onto SSDs on the camera. There is HDMI talkback and telelights with this.
    It seems like you do got s few dropped frames during this video tho.

  • @paulpixphotos

    If you are streaming wirelessly from the cave, you can connect your computer to the atem through the ethernet port, hard wired or usbc to ethernet adapter, then use the USB-C port on ATEM to record your footage and the Atem will still have software control. BTW just built a completely battery powered unit of the Pro model to take on location and use in the field, fantastic when you don't need AC power to operate it.

  • @622Joe

    Works really well in a corporate live stream sense too, however we’ve had a lot of problems of the functionality freezing up if left on for a while. Our new standard practice then is to restart the switcher before every event. Not a big deal and has solved the issue, just mildly annoying that there isn’t a power switch and it has to be unplugged instead.

    6:03 , 6:12 and few other moments (on the beginning with iphone feed) have some kind of dropped frames, is it that because of hardware, recording that videos or does that happen in postprocessing?

      I wonder how it copes with each source potentially having a different frame rate. It looks like he made this video 100% on the device and is recording the mixdown to a USB drive. That is very impressive, but if the phones / camera are recording at different FPS (30/29.something) it has to be dropping or duplicating frames in that mixdown as it can't be a variable FPS video it is outputting.

    • @sadiablo
      @sadiablo 3 роки тому +1

      Might be that, but at the same time it happened on all of the cameras and mostly on the fade between them. I'm wondering if maybe there is something with bitrate going on there or maybe SSD buffer goes wild every now and then. There are many possibilities why that happens

    I have an ATEM Mini Pro that I use via USB as a webcam and do not experience those dropped frames you see in the video, and that many have mentioned here. I imagine this is from the SSD hard drive write speeds, although this assessment may be wrong due to the lack of my knowledge on the actual Samsung unit used.

    The one major feature the Atem Mini is missing is side-by-side mode, rather than picture-in-picture. For streaming a speaker and their slides, it would be great to have the slides cover the left 75% (with black bars above and below) and a cropped camera feed of the speaker cover the other 25%.

    You can also view your settings or copy your livestream key via ethernet. So you start your recording via USB and then you can control everything from audio effects to color settings via ethernet or switch remotely between cameras if you like. The ISO is cool since it records everything simultaneously without the hazzle of later adjusting different recording speeds or frame rates, it also records your switching choices, so you get a fully edited video out of your livestream (and can change transitions later ln, if you like). So it looks like you haven't fully discovered what the ethernet or the ISO functionality is for.

    For using a mirrorless/DSLR camera in 1080p mode at 30fps to do Zoom conferences: Do you know how the video quality of the Blackmagic ATEM Mini compares to the Magewell Capture HDMI Gen 12 and/or the Elgato Cam Link? If I want to minimize latency, am I better off getting an internal computer card like the Magewell Pro Capture HDMI Card? I heard complaints about certain capture cards that use some form of jpeg compression that reduces the video image quality. Does that really matter? Does a device using USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 make any difference in latency? (I know the Blackmagic ATEM Mini is a switcher with extra features, but at this temporary point, I'm just trying to understand differences in latency and video quality for each device using 1 mirrorless/DSLR camera.) I feel like video switching is only a secondary feature of the atem mini. I think it's primary feature is to be a object that youtubers review.

    The original atem mini has a consistent problem with audio desync, have you guys had any issues on this one?

    • @JanThomasPettersen
      @JanThomasPettersen 3 роки тому +1

      Not really a problem, but a result of HDMI. If audio is pluged into a camera the sound and video are in perfect synch. As the encoding is happening at the camera and fed through the HDMI. If you plug an audio input directly into the ATEM, the audio is "straight" into the video out and does not have the delay that happens with the video and audio encoded in a camera. But there is a fix in the software, you just test and set the audio delay for that input and Bobs your uncle! :-)

      @@JanThomasPettersen They actually added an audio delay feature in the software control that you can apply.

    I purchased a mini , and a few months later came the pro, then purchased that pro because of the USBc able to record all HDMI inputs to the ssd, and videos ( such as this one and others fail to mention is that it only records the 4 HDMI streams separately with BLACKMAGIC cameras. it does not work with any HDMI input...its stated in the .PDF..and an email I got from tech support.The Pro only records the FULL MIXED stream not seperatly as also the ISO will record all HDMI inputs and a mixed file, BUT ONLY WITH BLACKMAGIC CAMERAS..

      Can you come on to Alex Lindsay's Office Hours and put a question to the panel about that - link in the descriptions on how to join the Zoom, under the videos here - ua-cam.com/users/alexlindsaypxc

      the Pro will tell blackmagic camera to start recording in camera, but can only record the same stream that is streamed.
      Which is why Blackmagic Design later came out with the Atem PRO ISO (the ISO is important here), that actually records the iso feeds for all inputs

      This isn't mentioned in the Mini Pro ISO manual. Could you post the reply you got from support? I'm interested in buying one of these and the recording of separate video sources is one of the features I'm interested in.

    I lost all hope in you when you're raging about how great a BM product is, say it exports Davinci PROJECT FILES....and proceed to say you guys edit with Premiere. I'll never go back. Editing and cutting, actually being able to utilize the speed of my 2X 4090's is insane.
