Completed the mod today. Works great!!!! Thanks for posting.
Modified mine this afternoon. Thanks for the overview and video.
That's the best set up yet. Clean. Professional and factory looking.
Thanks. Still works great. 👍🏻
@@covetthecamper2289 get some old extiguishers, alloy, 6 or 8mm air lne, mount tanks, 3 off under chassis, 1 line to side of truck with air fitting, permanently mount compressor, fill tanks, 170 psi switch, leave comp switch on. tanks allways full..you need 8 or 6 gauge wire or bigger, at least 60 amp relay, fused. or buy power tank. i fill from 12 psi to 36 psi, 4 tires in 6 mins.
I love how your improving that to fit your needs. Very clever! Thanks for sharing!
Great how-to video. I shamelessly copied your idea for mine and it works fabulously. Thank you!
Love the KYD cap. Big fans of their videos, too.
Just finished mine. Excellent idea and how to.
Great vid. Thanks for making it. Followed it to modify my own today.
I was waiting for the video when I saw your mods. Great timing
This works perfectly now. It’s a lot more efficient and way less annoying now.
Just did mine tonight based off of your video, great instructions and mod love it
Awesome 😎
Great ill do this before march camping season thanks
Definitely like your solution. Looks really clean
great mod and video. thank you for a clearly explained mod.
A well made and easy to understand video. Thanks for sharing
Great video!!
Nice clean install 👌🏻
Just completed the pressure switch mod!! Great video.
Did you have to add a1/4 barb to the black hose
@@willietenort2694 i used a 5/16 barb by1/4 npt on both ends of the black hose. Fits tighter for a better connection. Still used a small hose clamp on each end as well. Works great!!
Thanks for the info
This mod is awesome.
Thank you for this!
Thank you very much!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing!!!!
👍🏻
Good idea!👍🏼🇱🇷
Thank you very much 😊
Great idea . Got scared first time I heard the bang lol
Would this work with a 4 hose system? I bought the MORRFLATE
Nice mod but wondering if this will work for the Smittybilt 2780 and also I would be airing up tires for a tacoma (hopefully 4 tires simultaneously) but at 40 psi max. Would I use the same switch or do I need a lower psi switch?
I wanted a way of turning the compressor off remotely, as its mounted in rear of pajero/ montero where the kids 6 and 7 seats used to be. Never thought of pressure switch idea, i purchased a Wireless Remote 12V 24V 120A 200A Battery Switch Relay Control Disconnect from ebay about 30 AUD or 20 usd, i wired it to a twin core cable with anderson plugs on both ends as compressor had previously had an anderson connection. In between tyre inflation i can give it rest and let the air hose go slack by pressing the air trigger. These compresor units are sold in many different colors here in Australian camping stores and auto outlets. The hose and gauge that come with are not great i upgraded to flexzilla and a decent trigger and guage.
👍🏻
also, how did you run those wires from the truck battery out the front grille?
What M/M thread adapter did you use right at the pump handle just behind the beauty cap? I was thinking of threading a female quick coupler in that spot and getting rid of the stock whip
Great video! Sadly my threads didn't line up to do the downward connect, so mine is off to the side exposing the wires. I'll just have to be extra careful as to not break them off or knock loose. Regardless, thanks for posting this step-by-step guide!
Mine came with a plastic cap so I cut the end off, put it on and filled with silicone. Worked out great to protect the end
which sealant did you use to seal up the holes?
Great mod. Wondering if it’s possible to have it automatically cutout at the correct driving pressure or close to it.
If you can find a pressure switch with the specs you need for your application, then yes. That would be really handy.
So mine works but after about 20-30 seconds after stopping airflow the compressor kicks on for 1-2 seconds and then cuts off and continues
Is this normal? I assumed it would stay off completely until I engaged air flow.
Or is it just losing pressure somewhere?
whats the difference between turning off the air compressor vs adding a pressure switch? cant i just turn off my compressor to see what psi im at?
Hi thank you for the vid! I just got the pump and getting ready to do the mod. Any issues with the back pressure so far? The manual says stopping and restarting can overload and blow a fuse. Recommends to turn the pump on before inflating the tire. Just wanted your thoughts on that. Thanks again
No issues. It’s much less stress on the compressor to not have to run for long durations.
Great video! What adhesive sealant did you use?
did you figure out the sealant?
What size pressure switch did you install?
You can easily pry up the switch without having to dissassemble the unit. Snake the wire thru the grommet for the power cords. Much easier.
You definitely cannot do these mods without taking things apart.
I like to see what I’m working on.
i followed your video to the t install the pressure switch you recommend 70/100 compressors just cycles on/off thought it was a bad switch replaced with another and it still cycles on /off without stopping
Not sure why you’re having that issue. Maybe your air chuck is leaking or another fitting is leaking?
What size is the black hose coming out of the discharge side of the tee fitting? (what size hose barb is needed for the QD?)
I thought about doing a Male NPT QD straight out of the Tee fitting, but that seems like it coudl put a lot of strain on the aluminum tube that runs through the handle over time. Seems best to do it the way you have it.
looks like a 1/4" hose barb fits best.
Did you find the stock rubber leader hose ok or has it got way too hot. I'm waiting for my smittybilt and fittings for the same build but curious if ill need a 12 Braided steel leader hose. Thanks!
The fittings do still get hot but they do not get as hot with the modifications because it’s not running continuously like a stock compressor.
do you remember which pressure switch you grabbed? there are multiple on/off switches for different psi. thanks for the video
70 psi on, 100 psi off.
Links are in the description for all of the parts I used. Works great. I use it nearly everyday for my business.
Hello, do you have non-return valve?
after a few seconds or minutes the compressor does not lose pressure, and the pressure sensor lets the compressor start again?
With my setup, the compressor builds pressure in the hose to the pressure switch cutoff psi then shuts off. It doesn’t turn back on until I start using the air.
Great video application to how to DUY!!!
My tires are 225 65 R17 for Subaru Outback....
I need to lower the air down until 12-14psi and then load the air up until 32-35 psi....
DO I HAVE TO BUY THE PRESSURE SWITCH BETWEEN THOSE PSI I’M GOING TO USE???? or can I use the one you get on Amazon 70on to 100off
Thanks for letting me know
You can use that same pressure switch. The compressor will turn on at 70psi & off at 100psi which will actually be more efficient.
But if I only need 12 to 35 psi, will it still going to turn on????
Because your pressure switch is turn on at 70psi and is higher pressure than what I need, sorry to bother you again
Anything below 70 the compressor will run. This is just to shutoff the compressor if there is a shutoff valve. You still need to watch your own pressure for the tire.
Did you have to use another adapter from the proximal end of the hose to the new T fitting?
No. The adapter screwed right in no issues.
could you use a m/f 1/4 adapter to extend the pressure switch right into the cap?
Potentially. I’m not sure if there’s enough room inside the cover for the pressure switch though.
Can you use the same fittings and pressure switch for the Smittybilt 2780 as well?
Not sure but it looks like the air outlet side is the same on both.
Could use split wire loom piece over the solenoid to cover
You could use that or a bunch of other things like abs plastic, aluminum, steel etc…
On your black hose did you change the fitting to make it fit onto the tee
Yes, the adapter for the air outlet is needed. Part numbers are all in the video description.
Copied along with a 5gallon 150psi air tank for constant air . 1/4" ptc fittings ,quick couplers ans 50' of hose .Truck ,trailer and loaded eqpt .all within reach .
Covet, when you attached the M12x1.25 adapter to the compressor's air outlet, was this a smooth fit or did you get an 'unnatural' sensation of jamming after about 2.5 to 3 turns? I did, but with a little tape and pipe dope I got a good seal anyway. Everything works great after the update. Thanks for the great video. One recommendation to ease the somewhat 'fiddly' re-assemble step: Remove the baseplate before reattaching the cap with all the connections inside. This will give you more room to fit the cap behind the triangular chrome cover which extends down from the air outlet connection.
I didn’t have that issue. It sealed well and no air leaks. Still working well.
Thanks for the comments.
I have found that the thread is M12x1. Yes a M12x1.25 will work but it will slightly cross thread 2/3 rds of the way in which is not a big deal.
I concur. M12x1 is the right thread.
Great video. I just did the pressure switch mod and have a question, if you don't mind. Is it unusual for the fittings at the compressor to get pretty hot? I actually did the mod right after buying the compressor; so, I don't have a pre-mod comparison to see if it is hotter or just common. I set up a hose system where I can air up all four of my Jeep tires at once; so, the compressor runs a bit longer than if I were just airing up one tire at a time. Will the compressor still shut off if it overheats? Thanks again for your videos. They are very helpful and much appreciated.
Hi Tim,
Yes, the fittings do get very hot. They do before the mod as well. That’s the main reason there’s a heat shield on the main handle. Mine actually runs much cooler now with the pressure switch mod because it’s not running the entire time.
@@covetthecamper2289 OK. Thank you for the response. And, again, thanks very much for your videos!
For those that are replaceing the air outlet with the adapter, maybe there was a change in the production but the pitch is 1.0 instead of 1.25 M12 thread, at least for mine.
Do you have the 2781 or the 2780?
The pressure switch link, links to several psi models. Which did you use?70-100? or larger?
I’m using the one that’s on at 70 psi, off at 100 psi. Works great.
I did this mod with all the parts you've listed. I'm having issues with the pressure switch. Compressor is always on when turned on with pressure or no pressure. I connect the wires to the black lead going into the compressor and not the relay, what am I doing wrong? Any info would be great! Thanks!
If you’re letting the compressor run long enough to build pressure to the switch and it’s not shutting off at the pressure switch specified pressure, then you might have a faulty pressure switch.
Take the switch out of the line, cap the T where the switch was and run compressor. If it shuts off at pressure, confirmed bad switch.
You can verify by doing an ohm test on the switch.
Is the small black wire coming from the motor a thermal overload switch?
That goes to the built in breaker.
So I did the mod and my Smittybuilt stopped working after about 4 air ups. Just wondering if yours is still working? I heard that you really need a relay wired in to the pressure switch as well to handle the high amperage.
Still working great. No issues.
I use it nearly everyday for my business.
What’s the chance your close to ga , al , Tennessee I would love to pay you to do mine lol
Nah, you can do it. It’s pretty easy.
Great video. What PSI did you go with on the pressure switch?
I installed the 70 psi (on) to 100 psi (off) version. Works perfectly for my setup.
Thank you! I plan to use this compressor to air up 35” tires. Knowing that, do you think the 70/100 will work or should I think about going up to the 90/120 switch?
@@matthewloevenguth1606 Your call. I would stick with the 70 psi on/ 100 psi off. Having it run up to 120psi is probably unnecessary and just makes the compressor heat up more than it needs to. I would only have chosen the 90-120 version if I was going to inflate G rated tires.
Makes sense. Thanks again.
Can you use this with a digital gauge like astro ai hand trigger
Just got my smittybuilt and will do the same. One question the pressure switch says on at 70psi and off at 100psi one of the ones in the link you provided. Wouldn't one be needed that is at on at 0psi and off at 100psi?
No. The compressor will always turn on at zero psi initially then turn off at 100psi. But when you are airing up, it uses the air in the system down to 70psi. ie; It turns on at 70psi then off at 100psi when in use.
@@covetthecamper2289 Of course, I should have figured that out.
I am having trouble trying to source the adapter for air outlet here in BC Canada. Can get it from Amazon but the shipping is $37. I will keep looking though.
no, takes too lng to get tanks filled from zero.i have 3 extiguishers rigged up to compressor..on 120 off 180..
Would this compressor benefit much from an added storage tank?
I don’t think so. With these mods, it runs only when needed and keeps up just fine.
What is the size of the black rubber hose? 1/4" NPT MALE on the end that threads into the brass tee but what size is the barbed end?
That adapter for air outlet, virtually impossible to get here in Canada. I ordered from an unknown supplier. Lets hope it gets here. M12x1.25, super hard to find.
I like the compressor. Very strong. I purchased it for my Class A motorhome. I need big pressures. Tires are cold rated at 110 psi, I run 88 psi. Ridiculous that it doesn't come with a pressure shut off. I used mine the first time and I had to let it run a little bit with the relief valve popping. Compressor was on the other side of Motorhome. I didn't like that at all, I don't think my neighbors at the park liked it either.
I was actually quite surprised on how quiet the compressor runs minus the relief valve popping. HaHa.
I am going to do a 110 - 140 switch as I need almost a 100 psi.
Thanks for the great video.
Standard 1/4” ID barb worked
Hey! I’ve been trying to find this fitting in Canada here too. Seems impossible. Where’d you buy from?
After this mod my compressor cycles on and off does that mean there's a air leak
Most likely. Seal all threads on the fittings and tighten.
Did you have any problems with your compressor after you did this mod?
No, works great.
Can you use this with a digital gauge like astro ai hand control lever
Sure. Whatever connects to a standard air line.
I mean on the other end that's going to connect to the flex hose. By the way I really appreciate you responding
What gauge wire for the leads going to the pressure switch ?
At 4:48 in the video I show the 16 gauge primary wire used.
Can you wire the pressure switch in place of the power switch?
yes, but you cant turn it off. if it leaks down, it keeps turning on.like mine at 2.30 am. mines hooked to 3 alloy extinguishers. 170 psi switch..
Does your bleed down and turn back on?
Not unless I’m using air.
Have any of you experienced blown fuses with this set up?
Hi Josh,
Blowing fuses where?
I use a 40 amp resettable breaker on mine without any issue.
FYI....the adapter is actual NOT M12x1.25 it has a finer tread.
I did the same update with the parts listed and also wondered about the M12x1.25 thread. The adapter went into the female compressor outlet for about 3 turns and that was about it without applying a lot of torque. However, with tape and pipe dope I got a leak free seal at that depth. Just to check, I took the provided and removed black hose with the male fitting and also the adapter to a local hardware store and tested both against metric M12x1.25 female parts and got a smooth and perfect fit. So I guess, the M12x1.25 adaptor is the right part after all. My setup works great so far.
Hi Matt. It actually IS the correct part, and works perfectly. I use this compressor almost daily for my RV service business.
No issues.
Where are the parts list
In the video description of each video.
