SmittyBilt 2780 Review and Mod - (ARB vs. Smittybilt 2780 after DIY pressure Switch Upgrade)

- We're drilling holes into my new Smittybilt 2780 air compressor this week to try and upgrade it to work more like an ARB compressor. Grab a cold drink and relax while I entertain you with my complete lack of common sense and total disregard for factory warranties.
Here's a list of the parts I used to make the SmittyBilt Mod (Attempt at your own risk):
UPDATE: Using the 2780 for a year now we've realized that it's a bit under powered for our set-up. No problem getting to 35PSI, but going to 40psi can trigger the thermal cut off after three to three and a half 32" tires. We're upgrading to the 2781 soon and a viewer verified it will fit in the same spot. I would recommend the larger 2781 or similar if doing this project.

Metric to NPT Adapter needed to replace the primary hose attached to the SmittyBilt 2780:

Pressure Switch:
I used 70-100 for safety but you could probably go with a 90-120PSI switch since the compressor is rated to 150 PSI.

You'll also need 12" of scrap 14-16 gauge wire (low amps between the switch and relay) and two female quick disconnect connectors which you can get in a kit like this: amzn.to/2TmIFn4
The above is all you need to add the pressure switch. The plumbing is essentially in the order that the parts are listed above, starting at the metric female thread in the Smittybilt which will be exposed when you remove the existing lead hose.
From there you can use an existing airline and inflator like the ARB kit or go a step farther and convert the yellow airline to a latch on style like I did. You'll need to add a quick disconnect from the kit above to one end and a clip on chuck to the other. For that you'll need the following:

If you plan to go the distance and install under the hood you might want to build a manifold like I did. This will also allow you to add a pressure gauge.

Fun video, one thing to note is airing down is about increasing tire contact with the ground, which was correct, but its more about elongating the footprint rather than making it wider.

Can you give us viewers a long term review on the Smittybilt 2780? Thinking about a cheap reliable 12V air compressor without the ARB price:)
Maybe, but I can tell you I made this video and did the work almost 3 years ago now and I aired up twice this weekend with no issues : ) (and about a 50 times before that). Go with the 2781 though, same process and fits. Mine overheats on the 4th tire if I'm above about 8500' or in the desert in the summer so I have to give it a break before the 4th tire in those scenarios or end up having to wait for it's thermal switch to reset (~20 minutes). Should not have that issue with the larger 2781. Good luck!

I bought the bigger brother today, can you do a video on how to put a standard fitting hose on it? I see you did that already and I would love that on mine, as a matter of fact I would volunteer mine to do it and film it
Same process! Just follow the wiring diagram and make the mods the same as you would the 2780. I got my inspiration from guys doing it on the 2781.

Probably. I don’t think the Smitty is purpose built. It’s probably a commodity compressor from another manufacturer.
Hi, Nice modification. Do you think it will hold up well in the engine compartment? Was thinking about making the same modification and mount in engine bay but im a little worried it wont tolerate an engine wash? How water resistant do you think it is? Br Pontus
I would probably get an ARB if I were planing on doing water crossings regularly.. It did overheat on me one day after 2.5 tires but I was trying to get them to 45psi. It fired right back up after a 20 minute cool down though. I think for anybody doing casual overlanding, this is a good choice. Hard core guys running 34" tires, probably better get an ARB double.
@@WastingTimeInTheWoods Thank you for your answer. Oh no i'm not planning on doing water crossings, just a 1 year regular engine "wash" to keep it clean and nice. I'm only running 33" and 35psi on road so i think this one should be fine.

@@pontus8589 Then you should be fine. I've washed my engine once with it in. I would silicone the hole you drill in the plastic cap if you do the mod. On another note, I use tire foam on my engine and it does a great job.

2780 still has a Thermal problem. How did you navigate that? my motor burned out. is it fixable or a landfill?
Sorry to hear that! My thermal cut off switch has kicked in several times. Every time I cursed. Guess, I should have been thankful :-) get a 2781 to replace it. Good luck!

Just an idea to throw out there....
How about a video of how YOU load and stock your vehicle for a camping trip.... and enough room to fit 4 or 5 people for the ride??
That's a great idea and I already have the footage. My oldest daughter filmed me during an entire load out. We roll with the whole family (Jill and I plus 14yo, 5yo and 65lb dog). It's supper tight but works. I'll have a think about how to make that funny and add it to the list. Keep them coming!
Fellow GX owner here... what was the plate you used to mount this under the hood?
I used a c4 fab 5th gen 4 runner accessory mounting plate because I'm a cheap bastard and didn't think to measure the plate first. It's only $25 currently but I had to use a bunch of washers to space it off the fender because it's really too small to fit the Smitty 2780. It would work fine for a single ARB which is more compact. If I were to do it again (and I probably will because I'm an idiot), I'd probably start with this - www.powertrays.com/collections/5th-gen-4runner/products/1-blank-powertray. That looks like it will fit the Smitty much easier and leave room for accessories. I've got mine installed under the hood now but it was a bear. Stay tuned for install videos next.

Is the small black wire going into the motor a thermal overload?
I believe thats powering the relay. The thermal switch is inside the motor somewhere.

This is detrimental to the compressor. Watch this video and you'll understand. I wish I watched it before I destroyed my other compressor. You need to have a flow through air shuck. If not, it's just pushing against pressure and will kill the compressor. Please check out this other video before You do this.
