  • A playthrough of Sofel's 1992 casino game for the NES, Casino Kid II.
A year after becoming a millionaire and being declared the "King of the Casino," the Casino Kid receives a message from a mystery man informing him that elimination tournaments have been held to determine who the best players are worldwide. The Casino Kid must now rise to the challenge and defeat each of these new champions if he is to meet this mystery man and defend his title.
This North American-exclusive follow-up to 1989's Casino Kid ( • Casino Kid (NES) Playt... ) ditches the first game's RPG-style meet-and-greet sandbox approach in lieu of a more streamlined system. Instead of wandering around the casino floor chatting up women in bunny ears, you now issue your challenges from a world map yanked straight from Street Fighter II.
The blackjack and poker games return from the first game, and they play exactly the same as before. Blackjack is still just a question of how close you can get to 21 without going over, and in poker, your opponents' reactions to the hands they're dealt are clues that are meant to guide you in how you play your own hands.
The roulette game that was left out of the North American version of Casino Kid is brought back for the sequel, and it works much the same as poker. Rather than relying on pure luck, the comments your opponent makes before each spin hint at where the ball will likely land. For example, if Paul asks, "How old are you?" the ball is going to land somewhere between 1 and 18, and if he says, "I don't like black cars," any bet on black will hit. It's a neat way to beef up what is essentially a glorified random number generator, but there's a lot of trial-and-error involved in figuring out what the messages mean.
The games put a neat video game twist on classic casino table staples and the opponents lend the game a fun, silly vibe - playing roulette against Chun-Li is as unexpected as it is funny - but in scrapping the overworld segments, Casino Kid II loses a lot of the novel charm that made the first game so engaging and memorable. The graphics are nice, though (as nice as you could expect given the subject matter, at least), and the music is pretty good. (That password screen tune @1:12:51 is an unexpected banger!)
Casino Kid II doesn't hit as hard as Casino Kid did, but it's still one of the better gambling-themed carts you'll find on the NES. If the idea of amassing virtual piles of loot through games of chance appeals to you, check it out!

I absolutely loved the original Casino Kid when I was a kid myself and had no idea there was a sequel until years later when I found it among a new friend's NES collection later on in life. What a MASSIVE letdown this game was having abandoned everything that made the original unique.

Casino Kid II is a fun update to the first game, but I wish they hadn't ditched the exploration bits.

Good thing you built your bankroll early with roulette and hitting 5 single-number max bets at one spin. That took out the opponents with the roulette version of the "Shinku Hadouken" (five fireballs that connect).
When you faced the King, for his Roulette Round, you took him down with one wager session (five single number max bets) forced him to stop the bleeding at topping you to a million (full payoff would have been 1.75 million I think). Sadly, I think when he won poker and blackjack, he might have hid some chips under the table (not sure you got your full stack back).

I found out something interesting about this game and its predecessor while messing around with emulators and abusing save states a while back. Turns out there really isn't much RNG if there even is any to begin with, the blackjack and poker hands are pre-determined at the betting screen and will play out the exact same way even if you reload a state before the cards are dealt. So there are some hands you're guaranteed to win and some you're guaranteed to lose because of how the cards are programmed to be dealt. Obviously you'd never notice this on an actual NES unless you happened to be sharp-eyed enough to see the same pattern of cards come up more than once, but it was a pretty interesting thing to notice in a game that's supposed to revolve around a strong element of chance.

Well, he lost 300K to you in roulette, blackjack and 5-card draw poker, and he might owe his casino for the Kid "breaking the bank" on roulette (real payoff should have been 1.75 million, but the game caps your cash at one million as the King had to pay you all his chips, but probably sign a note to repay the debt owed from guaranteeing anything above what he had on hand, so his debt might be 700K or so). Once you had to be paid up to your million, the pit boss noted both King AND the roulette table had run out of chips (since the 100K at the table was King's own stack that game), so he had to get the casino to make up the balance.
When it came to cleaning out the King at Blackjack and Poker, not sure if the Kid's chip winnings past a million were held by the pit boss (since a million is the table limit at any time) and that 200K was given to him after beating King at the card games, so went the game ended, he got 1.2 million when the camera stopped.

That is hilarious that you can break the game by hitting $1 million before the game is even over

@@NintendoComplete He might have, having been told by his "lawyer-godfather" to let invest his cash with his uncle and "his uncle's folks" would help. He might have been 21 (and in Vegas on Spring Break) when he did "Casino Kid" (and did his big legendary winning during Break), 22 with "Casino Kid II" (in which he flew on weekends to the casino battles) and get advised to go to business school for an MBA in stock trading. As Godfather, the "lawyer" helped mentor the now-former Casino Kid into being capable of playing at the stock markets, a bigger-stakes gamble than casinos. Then his uncle died, and the Kid, now with an MBA and a stock trader's license, had his mission to earn enough to live up to the "family legacy" and "family fortune." Cue him with a car, boat, house and wife, having just signed the final papers for the Castle and Family Fortune.

was always disappointed by this game, being just basically the same game as the first but without any of the charm that made it special or stand out from the other gambling simulators on the NES. even with the english localization of casino kid 1 being watered down and having less characters and games, it still managed to make a pretty good product out of it
