    Besides the combat, this game in it's entirety was way ahead of it's time. That's one of the reasons I loved it. The isometric view, the art, music and even the subtle "whisper" sound effect when people talked was great. Let's not forget the really interesting keyword dialogue, that thing made you feel like a detective, going around asking the right questions to the right people would get you further in the story.

    Tried playing this a lot when I was a kid. It intrigued me because of the serious tone. I was never able to get into it and usually gave up before I even had a weapon to fire.
    So last year I decided to give it another try, now 20 years later i'd at least be able to get somewhere right? And I did. The start felt a bit trial and error, but eventually I got what the game was going for and it actually does it really well. For those with the patience to trial and error through the first hour, and get used to how it wants to be played, which it doesn't convey well, it's going to be a great time.

    Try Shadowrun Returns again. The creators acknowledges players wanted more malleable saves, save scumming or no. It was updated with the introduction of the superior Dragonfall DLC, and now Returns (or Dead Man's Switch as it's really known) runs like Dragonfall.
    In short, try it again. Or try Dragonfall autonomously as you can play it as a separate game now. And if you like that, Hong Kong is even better.

    The story is pretty well integrated into the game play as you, the player, have to decide whether or not you're going to ask every. single. person. in the world every word on the list, or select key words or barely talk to them at all. Heck, at some point you can EVEN CHOOSE TO KILL THEM [which, unfortunately I chose to do so after some point of frustration (stop telling random strangers that they are homeless, businessmen! :p)].
    Also, not sure if anyone else has mentioned this or not but magic is VERY USEFUL. It's all in how you use it. Level your magic up along with strength, and firearm so that you can a: last longer, and b: heal yourself and your party [if you choose to rent runners (hint: always get Kitsune)]. I used Invisibility on Kitsune and used all her heals on myself throughout the game and pretty much BROKE it that way once I had tank 'Runners to shoot tank enemies while I healed.
    Shadowrun is like Dark Souls in this way: you figure out what you want to do and then inch your way to that point of the game. I love it.

    "fox thing" = Shape shifter = intelligent awakened animal capable of taking a metahuman form
    in the 5th edition of the tabletop (rules as written) using karma to improve your character takes an amount of weeks(?) dependent on that stat or skills current value.
    fun fact: the main character in the SNES shadowrun game has cyberware (a data jack) and in the table top having any cyberware reduces essence which makes spell casting more difficult. typically awakened characters opt not to get cyberware even to correct something as simple and debilitating as blindness.

It would have been really clever if they had an option that you could walk around with the D-pad in one hand, and use the mouse to control the cursor/crosshairs with the other.

    The Mega Drive one, yes it's called Mega Drive in the UK (Genesis) one is pretty good, worth playing if you haven't... I like them both equally but the SNES one is better really. The controls are actually surprisingly fine once you get use to them (which doesn't take long). The bigger issue is not knowing where to go and having to wander around aimlessly for ages while constantly getting shot at by hitmen and snipers, etc. I'd love to see a real-time remake of this game as the atmosphere was great and it was almost a great game. Maybe Cyberpunk 2077 will be something in this tone.

I think I had to phone a helpline or something to tell me to talk to the dog to get the dog collar.

    Just played this for the first time ever over the summer. Agreed on all points. I think the only thing that truly annoyed me was scrolling through the entire keyword list every time you selected a topic. If it was more obvious which topics were relevant in NPC conversations or if it at least kept your cursor in the most recently selected option it would have saved a lot of frustration. There were parts where I missed progressing the story because I had only tried half the keyword options but skipped the relevant one out of pure impatience.
    Still, very fun game! I actually got used to the point and click aspects of it a lot quicker than I thought I would.

    • @WR3ND
      @WR3ND 6 років тому

      It's a good thing they don't though. Most people don't want to bother with it, myself included. We had/have a Sega mouse that we never used. It's a fun, kind of hackish idea to mess with it, but not practical.

    • @oculed1101
      @oculed1101 6 років тому +4

      Actually, it's not a good thing that it wasn't made usable for so many games that it would have clearly benefited. It doesn't matter if you "didn't want to bother with it", and most people would in fact like the option. The games could have easily supported both the controller and the mouse so you would have a choice.

    • @WR3ND
      @WR3ND 6 років тому

      Game development isn't particularly about player choices, and when it is, it's an exception. That's why it's a good thing more games weren't made to take advantage of these old low accuracy mice. We have better, more playable games for developers not having bothered with this niche hardware option.

    SNES version is more along the lines of an adventure game like Monkey's Island. I swear this was a MSX port or something.
    Genesis version is more of a well rounded RPG but with open world elements. Almost like a GTA game before its time.
    I feel like Shadowrun Returns wasn't advertised properly. The real selling point is the game engine itself. I consider it an RPG Maker that just so happens to come with a free game. The real fun is the fan made campaigns which the developers actually play and wind up being surprised with what people come up with design wise. I'd recommend Jacked Up, From The Shadows, Run and Nightmare Harvest to really see what the engine is capable of. There was even a fan made remake of the SNES version in the works, but I doubt it was ever finished.

    absolutely! someone even made a mod you can use with emulation to allow for mouse to control the pointer making it more comfortable to play!
    if you have nothing against the visuals or isometric view go for it!

    The answer is yes. I discovered it in a list of SNES games on my modded Xbox in 2007 and got hooked. Yeah 2007 was 13 years ago but still...

    I don't think you necessarily need to look at a walkthrough to figure out how to get the plot moving. When my friend lent me his copy of Shadowrun, he gave me three pearls of wisdom:
    1. Which buttons do what
    2. The purpose of *highlighted words* in conversation.
    3. Where Jake's apartment was.
    From there, everything else just sort of fell into place, for the most part.

    The more recent releases on the PC by Hairbrained Studios (i think?) left me feeling a bit wanting. Now that everyone is reminded that the cyberpunk genre is still a thing, maybe we'll see some high budget remakes or sequels? I bet Inixile or Larian could do wonders with the franchise.

    Crystalis on NES and Shadowrun on SNES are certified RPG-adventure classics that unfortunately - for you, if you never played 'em - just didn't get the love that more familiar household name titles got.

    This was my favourite game of all time, back in the day. Followed by Terranigma.
    I never got to play Secret of Mana 2 though until I was older, sadly and I've never managed to play it for very long as an adult. Chrono Trigger, though, could have usurped Terranigma for No. 2 perhaps.

      Secret of Mana (the first one) is one of my favourite games ever but Shadowrun takes the gold.

    Sometimes I'll replay this for the soundtrack... Never got far enough to beat it yet. Although that seems to be a trend with me and games.
