Putting 40,000 miles on a Toyota Supra 3.0 was just as much fun as we expected. The car also proved to be reliable and fuel efficient. But it struggled in wintry conditions, and service was a challenge.

One thing about the "reliability". Toyota said that they tested and revised the b58, sent it back to BMW saying that "its not good enough", and that is when BMW (they have said this on record) learned a lot from toyota about how far they are willing to go to get the engine to be reliable. When they sent it back to toyota, toyota ran it for an effective 1 million miles RPM wise, and it lasted. Toyota was happy. That is why the S58 and the B58 are so different and aren't interchangeable. Then when BMW put the b58 in to everything...they were making headlines for making "the best engine ever made".
There B48 is no slouch either

Ive had mine for a month with 10k miles, I drove it from utah to Florida and then back again and I can honestly say it was a dream to drive. The adaptive cruise control works amazing, I stayed at 30mpg consistently and had enough room to store a large suitcase, 2 backpacks and my camera gear. Amaxing vehicle I am in love.
The v6 got 30mpg? Or do you have the 4 cyl ?

@5:15 I have a 2021 3.0 Premium and agree the wind buffeting when windows down is one of the WORST flaws in this car, however, there are some aftermarket deflectors that completely fix this problem. The ones I chose were carbon fiber, attached just over the sideview mirrors. Honestly, you can't even tell they aren't an original part of the car's body and they completely eliminate the noise. You don't even see them when you are looking at the car. I'm surprised Toyota hasn't incorporated the deflector design into their side view mirror design to resolve this issue for good for future buyers.

I don’t even know which auto media outlet he’s working for when he pops up, but he is entertaining so clearly he can afford to jump ship to the highest bidder.
This is C/D's last chance as a brand of any significant. The magazine is effectively dead, and this is like their 3rd attempt at moving to a new medium. It's a shame that they can't capture the essence of the magazine they had 30 years ago. Brock Yates should have been the American Clarkson. Lagos would have been better off to run his own channel.
The most useful Supra video I've come across so far. A minimum of 20% of every other video focuses on the fact that "it's basically a BMW". Thanks for not being obnoxious about it.
Carlos, glad to see you back! The wind buffeting can be addressed with aftermarket stick-on parts. You can find several videos on YT. There’s no excuse for Toyota not to have addressed this. The lack of a spare in a sports car: I’ve owned & driven plenty of sports cars w/o spare tires. Servicing: The lack of the necessary parts after calling ahead for service is inexcusable. Owners will have to build into their lexicon to have service verify they have parts on hand. 😎🏁👍

That's not something that should have to be addressed. Last thing I would want is to slap on some ebay stick on parts to make something that should never have been an issue, go away, on my $60k+ BMW
You know whats more annoying than wind buffeting? The sound of the honk! I don’t really mind the buffeting but damn that honk….smh
Even though it's easily fixed, a car that's $52k-$60k out the door should have that resolved by now, doesn't take an engineer that much to flair out that mirror area to fix it from the factory but they are just ignoring that feedback

I picked mine up January of 2020, and only have 23k miles on it, and for solo road trips it is amazing. The tuning and mod ease has been a joy. Still a good sports car and I love to daily drive it.

Hey Carlos, great review. Both you and Jason are my favorite reviewers and would watch pretty much anything you guys make. LOL! As for the lack of a spare tire, I have an ND Miata, and for $5 I bought a tire plug patch kit for emergencies.

Wind buffeting is a cheap fix in the aftermarket. For winter tires I recommend the Michelin Alpin PA4 tires. I drive in 8” of snow no problem with my Supra. I live in West Michigan and we get a lot of lake effect snow.

Just got a 2022 Supra. The wind buffeting is a simple fix and is a non issue. Spectacular car.

Thanks for making this video, it's exactly what I want to know as a prospective buyer. Really excited to get my hands on a Supra one day, living in Texas winters are thankfully very mild for us and I'm gonna enjoy this car for years.
I love my 2021 3.0 GR Supra and have every day for the past six months or so. I appreciate you guys posting this video. I will definitely agree that road trips with the miss turn into a game of tetris with the cargo space but we make it work. In relation to the stock issues for service, one of the service managers here at Toyota in Texas told me that BMW doesn't "release" those parts to Toyota until your Supra is on the lot and set for service. SM then told me for any service, recall, alignment, etc that I should bring it in early on the day of service and *hope* to have it back the next day. Not ideal and certainly don't like the idea of leaving my car for days just for an alignment but it seems unavoidable as an owner who has ToyotaCare.
Another reason i would never buy a rebadged BMW

It's these kind of things the early press releases and reviews fail to mention.
This just shows that their cooperation was not well thought out. And hpnestly, it is not a 400 kmh+ car yhat can literally drive off its wheels. Any tire show with a geometry tray should be able and have access to the data to set the geometry.

ive had the car for 7-8 months now and just hit 30k, i drive it everyday and LOVE it, the lack of issues besides normal wear (tires, fluids) it has been amazing, 0 complaints!

Awesome that Car and Driver has Carlos. Perhaps my favorite American car presenter. I’ve always though C&D had the best written product, but video was behind. Hopefully having Carlos onboard changes that
I’m a semi truck repair tech and the amount of similar technology between this engine and the trucks I work on every day is insane. I love high pressure common rail design of the injector, incredibly efficient and should be used on all cars eventually. Air to water cooler is the same as a EGR cooler which don’t leak as often as you may think, when they do they very rarely lock up an engine or dump excess coolant in intake circuit. Very very interesting, bmw is onto something here with this engine specifically. The only downfall I have seem to come across is most normal or average people will not be able to EFFECTIVELY service or do repairs on this vehicle. But at the same time the price of the vechicle seems that most people would not do there own maintenance or repairs, especially when you compare to C8 vette which was supposed to be (back in 2020 and 2019) the biggest competitor.
I liked the editing, pacing, and B roll shots used in the video. It really made it comfortable and effortless to watch the video! The video was more focused on overall livability of the vehicle, but I do wish the driving impressions part was more nuanced than just fast, grippy, and slidey when you want it. How ThrottleHouse elaborates on driving dynamics is a good example.
You're right. Because this was the wrap-up for our 40,000-mile test, we were more focused on the ownership picture and less on the nuances of driving. You can expect that focus on forthcoming review and testing videos.

Good review pointing out stuff that you don't hear often.
First thing i had to my 2020 was also a new set of tires. Not from burning them off ( although I wanted to ) but from factory the alignment is ever so slightly off causing premature wear in the inside lip of the tire. Once done. car drove so much better. It wasn't following the road anymore.

Had my 21 3.0 Supra for 8 months, have put 14k miles on it so far daily driving with zero issues. I’m 6’4 and find the car very comfortable especially the seats, arguably the Most comfortable car I’ve ever driven. Absolutely love it!

My GT86 is serviced by Subaru. Works great but cross manufacturer development can be tricky for the user sometimes.

Hopefully C&D finally agrees that most of the modern car reviews are done in a video instead of a magazine. I miss Lago at Edmunds.
The car has been amazing for me so far, very fair review. I'd say the only issue I've had so far is that the dealership I bought it from only has one certified Supra mechanic so it's taken some juggling to actually get it properly looked at.

BMW Engine, transmission was the biggest failure imo. Not quite sure why they resurrect a classic with a bmw soul.

As a 5,4 lean and flexible enough male I can say this car is perfectly comfortable. In fact it eliminates all effort as far as keeping your body up, as if the seats do all the work for u

If I'm not mistaken, you guys have a Veloster n and have driven it 4ok miles. C&D said it got faster! Especially 0-130. 5 seconds faster! I own a 2021 Veloster n DCT and love it. Thanks for the Supra video.

21k on my 2020 GR Supra, has the pieces to get rid of wind noise and i do my own services. Living in Las Vegas no worries about 3 seasons. we only get 2, hot or hoodie weather. So far no issues with my Supra, runs 10's in the 1/4. on e50 tune. In regular mode its quiet and can get up to 35mpg back and forth to SoCal on 91. I sold my 18 Mustang to order a C8 and glad i ended up with a Supra. I love it, though do miss the room the Mustang on those longer trips.
How is the Supra compared to your old Stang. I just sold my S550 GT and wanted to hear how this Supra steers and feels as a sports car vs the Stang
I've had similar issues with getting my ATS-v worked on here, when I had an mv agusta brutale, ethanol ate through part of my gas tank and it was at the dealer waiting for a replacement for 6 months.
so excited that toyota is finally adding a manual for the supra, will definitely consider the car now.

Auto review market needs long term testing. Cars these days can be extremely different from brand new test drive to 2 year usage. Do more please!
Love my Supra and yes, getting service is such a hassle. My 2nd oil change visit went a lot better at Toyota. Also when I got the recall down it was smooth.
Great car and I have tons of fun with it. You have the haters but what I will say to those on the fence or worried about that, don’t let it sway you. Most people who hate bring up BMW and it’s normally from someone who doesn’t even own a sports car, can’t afford one or wife won’t let them have one lol.

I used Pirelli Sottozeros 2 for 4 winters on my Lexus GSF, and they were amazing.
I put a deposit down on 2024 3.0 liter premium with a manual. Can't wait to take delivery of it, I even let my wife pick the color.
Saw a Supra driving in the snow right after the roads were plowed and it was shredding it!
Seems like a nice little car. I have a classic BMW and it also turns heads everywhere it goes. But it has a spare, i can do, and have done all of the repair work myself. Parts are also widely available and it’s paid off. Win win win and win!

Carlos is awesome…so is the damn Supra. It’s quite far from the kinds of cars that I dream about but I have to admit when one is that good. I also have to admit that this body style is looking better and better as it ages.
The BMW straight six has been very fuel efficient since the e90 chassis. My 06 330i would easily get 36 mpg at 70mph on long trips. I was able to drive over 400 miles on a 16 gallon tank, and that included about 10% city driving.
Sounds about right. I can do that at 60 mph on my 335i at like 1800 rpm when the turbos are barely spooling
I was getting 35mpg with my 2003 530i automatic at 65mph I plan on getting my ccv fixed and some new injectors and hoping to push out 37 or 38 maybe some power pulleys also could help.
Lol hard to know where Carlos works next, but he is a star so worth following.

Great to see Carlos where he belongs, in front of the camera. The Supra is a sweet ride despite some quirks, dealership issues, wind buffering. Cars like these are not made for the snow, along with the Mustang, Camaro and the Corvette. What about resale value and depreciation?
The fix for wind buffeting is an easy fix. Nearly 20 dollars and some crafty work. The oil change can be done by yourself with a pair of jacks a basic tool set and 0w20/oil filter. The alignment can be done by alignment shops such as Firestone, precision auto, and basically any rear wheel drive vehicle if not heavier than a truck does horrid in snow.
Visibility reminded me of my old Z3 Coupé.
However I really liked the Supra on my test drive.
Great review! I think my only complaint generally about these reviews for Supras, and I own one mind you, is that people complain about wind buffeting. It's bad yes but it's no worse than most other sports cars. Also, it's also one of those things where if you want to hear the exhaust rev it out more and lower both windows, and I guarantee you'll hear it roar. Overall, really glad you made this review and I'm glad i made the purchase for this car.
Im already on my 2nd GR supra. The first thing I did both times is the $10 Amazon fix for the wind buffeting. Fixed it for the most part.

Carry a tire patch kit and a small emergency jack, they’re like $10 and it’s saved me in my bmw multiple times. Best thing you can keep under your trunk floor.
