Note to add - for those conscious of Palm Free - some vegetable stearic acid is a palm oil derivative. You can buy coconut derived stearic acid, but its difficult to trace if you are buying at the end of a long supply chain. Great vid. :)
I love it Sarah. Thank you for the recipe. I have a similar one but never added soy wax. Great idea.. Love the way the sugar mixture slurps when stirring lol .. Like it la la loved it.. Thanks again!!
Great video- -love my sugar scrubs but yes the oil can make a mess of the tub - -I use the jar funnel used for preserving and canning. It is a nice wide mouth funnel and is in most stores in kitchen wares for about $5- -. Less mess to clean later
Just a note for all of those who might be selling to/are a hardcore vegan, most white sugar that is sold in regular grocery stores is not actually vegan because the refining process uses animal bones to help get that nice white color. There is vegan white sugar, it is just a little harder to find than what is sitting on the shelf in most of the more common grocery stores.
I have read that cane sugar uses this method, but beet sugar does not. I am able to easily find beet sugar at my local wal-mart (if it doesn't specify cane sugar, but is just labeled sugar). I am no expert, but I just thought I would share what I found when researching this. I can't wait to try this recipe!!!
thanks for sharing! that was very good to see. You are a great teacher. thank you for sharing your recipe too. You really are incredible, you do so much...:) Have a terrific day!
Sarah, you are such a doll :) Wonderful video as always, and thank you sooooo much for sharing! Can't wait to get all the ingredients to try this. Could you show us what the final product looks like, and maybe a demo using it?
I really enjoyed your tutorial, but for some reason I could barely hear it. All of my volume was on the highest settings. But I have found the same problem with of the other videos. But going to try your scrub. looks great.
Hi Sarah, Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. Sounds great and will have to give it a try. Question though, when and at what temp did you add the preservative. I must had missed it. Thank you
Sarah this looks to be a very interesting scrub, I would like to try if you don't mind. However, I didn't hear how much stearic acid to use in the formula? Most certainly I will give you credit for this.
Hi Sara, loved your video. Just wanted to know why you added the soy wax? Is it simply for a thicker consistency? If I wanted to make something like this without the soy wax, could I just add more stearic acid and or more sugar?
Can you tell us what the yield is on your recipe for 4 oz. jars? Also, if I want to split this recipe into a few different scents instead of just one can I add the fragrances after the sugar has been added and I've divided the batch?
Lovely tutorial!!!!! I have reformulated my recipe to be better now after watching this! Who did you get to help you design your sugar scrub labels or what software did you use??????
Hello. :) I have everything to make this but soy wax. Is that necessary? And of course if will have to sub out sweet almond oil because I am allergic. But I have rice bran and I think it will be good because of all the great qualities it had. Thanks for you help and a great recipe I can play with. In the video you didn't mention the reason for certain ingredients (soy wax) and the ratio to oils and sugar is that just for the thickness you want correct. :)
Hi Sarah please can you explain why a presevative needs to be used for the vegan scrub. Is this the case will all sugar scrubs? I've made a few but the recommended shelf life is around 1 month plus I make sure no water ever enters the product. I would love to hear from you and learn more about using the correct presevatives. Amanda x
Hi Amanda! While it's true that no water is used during the making of the sugar scrub, due to the nature of the product (being used in the bathtub or shower), it's important to add a preservative to prevent mold/bacteria growth if splashes get in there, or if a customer reaches in with wet hands.
Hello Sarah Thank you for your respouse u understand fully now. Do you know the name or names of the preservatives I need to buy and where I can purchase them from? How do you know how much to use in your scrubs? I look forward to your response. Amanda
This is a great recipie. Can you help me understand the need for the preservative since there are no water based products. I used Phenonip and the final product smelled terrible, regardless of the essential oils I tried. Thanks!
I love this tutorial, thank you for posting! I don't have soy wax though, so I'm wondering: if I wanted to make this with candelilla wax instead of soy, would you use the same amount? Or less?
Hi Sarah :) Thank you for sharing your awesome recipe :) Is there something I can substitute for the soy wax? I really want to make this but I can't use any soy products. I'd love your input.
What is the difference between an Emulsified Body Sugar Scrub and a Lip Sugar Scrub? Is a Lip Sugar Scrub a different recipe, or is it just using lip safe colorants and FOs?
Love your videos Sarah! I'm wondering if the FO amount is correct or a typo? It seems like a lot for this amount. It's like 10% rate. I thought the normal rate is 2%.
The fragrance oil usage rate is calculated off of not just the oils, but also the added sugar. It's a bit different from soaps in this regard. In soap, FO usage is calculated strictly off of the oils (if this were a soap recipe, the fragrance would be calculated off of 20 oz.) because the water content will evaporate over the course of the cure time, which would increase the concentration overall. In sugar scrub, (and bath salts) however, the sugar is also calculated. All fragrance oils are different (some stronger than others), so please check with your supplier and the proper usage rate. :) I'll be sure to add a note in the description (and the video, if UA-cam will get their editor working) to clarify to others, so they can be sure to check their usage rates. :)
Ohhhhh! I didn't think the sugar was included! Thanks for clearing that up for me 😄. I cant wait to try this. I don't have all the oils so I'm tweaking it a bit. I love to use sugar scrubs! Wish me luck 😄
Hey Sarah! You added 7 more ounces of sugar after you had already put in the preservative. Does more preservative need to be added now? Thanks for your help! Have a great day! : )
Hi Kelly! Yes, You will have to adjust your preservative if you add additional sugar. However, with the amount of sugar I added, it was still in the Optiphen Plus usage rate of .75-1.5%, so not additional preservative was needed. (Any more than that, you would have to add more preservative.) :-)
Angela, if you want your sugar scrub to be 100% vegan, you will have to use beet sugar or sugar from a bone char-free vegan-verified company. Cane sugar is filtered through an activated carbon that MAY (not always) contain animal-based material (bone char)…. about half of the cane sugar refineries do this, not all. However, beet sugar does not undergo this process. Although cane sugar is kosher pareve, not all vegetarians agree. To be safe, you should use beet sugar, or sugar purchased from a bone char-free companies. Here is a list of these companies for you: www.ordinaryvegan.net/vegansugar/
hi sara... i made my first batch of this and i have some oil seperation on top. i used 35 oz of sugar. i'm thinking maybe i didn't stir the oils and e wax and such enough to fully emulsify. can this be saved? thanks.
honey, vitamin e, grapefruit oil, tea tree oil, etc. are NOT preservatives. ..if you skip the preservative you will end with bacteria growth even if you cant see it it starts yo gtow within 1-2 weeks
Nice! Very pretty. But I don't know if you know but sugar isn't vegan - neither is red colorant? Many times fragrance isn't either. It is vegetarian though. I am vegan so very careful.
I made it and it was great. It makes a little more than 40 oz. if anyone was wondering.
Tessie Dobey Greetings. What preservative did you use? The video did not say the exact type or brand.
Note to add - for those conscious of Palm Free - some vegetable stearic acid is a palm oil derivative. You can buy coconut derived stearic acid, but its difficult to trace if you are buying at the end of a long supply chain. Great vid. :)
I remade this again and added 15% cocoa betaine and upped the optiphen plus preservative Turned out great.
Hi Tessie, How do you know when to increase the optiphen and how much you should use? I'm new at this lol
I love it Sarah. Thank you for the recipe. I have a similar one but never added soy wax. Great idea.. Love the way the sugar mixture slurps when stirring lol .. Like it la la loved it.. Thanks again!!
Lol! :D
I enjoyed watching your video Sarah, thanks for sharing with us I can't wait to try it!
Thanks, Jan! :D
This look wonderful Sarah! Thanks for the recipe!
Fantastic video! Someone gave me some of your Sugar Scrubs as a gift. Fantastic! Love them.
lovely tutorial, thank you for sharing
You're so welcome! Thank you for watching!
Could you shoot a video of what it finally looks like when it cools and what it looks like when you use it.
Ta-da! :D ;) Sugar Scrub Follow Up- Consistency
Great video- -love my sugar scrubs but yes the oil can make a mess of the tub - -I use the jar funnel used for preserving and canning. It is a nice wide mouth funnel and is in most stores in kitchen wares for about $5- -. Less mess to clean later
Really liked your video.Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe and making the video.

I can't wait to try this recipe!!!
I believe Costco sells Wholesome Sweeteners Organic and Fairtrade Sugar - I read a blog that says it's vegan
How about using raw sugar or sea salt to keep it vegan?...
Nikita B sea salt may be too harsh on skin but raw sugar is a good option
thanks for sharing! that was very good to see. You are a great teacher. thank you for sharing your recipe too. You really are incredible, you do so much...:)
Have a terrific day!
Hi Sarah. Great presentation. Could you please list the sites/websites of where u get the ingredients? Thank u and God bless
I'm new to this but it looks wonderful..and easy to make.
When I make a batch, I will certainly give credit to whom it is due 😉 TFS.
Sarah, you are such a doll :) Wonderful video as always, and thank you sooooo much for sharing! Can't wait to get all the ingredients to try this. Could you show us what the final product looks like, and maybe a demo using it?
Not a problem! I've had a lot of questions about the consistency so I made a follow up video. :) Sugar Scrub Follow Up- Consistency
Cool beans! :)
Thank You ! Looks awesome.
Thank you for this! I have the *same exact* windchime and when yours sounded I thought it was at my house. Too funny.
how many jars can you make with this recipe? in 8 or 4 oz jars? Great vid!
Like Audreyhunts, I would also be interested in seeing the final result after cooling to check out the consistency. Great video. Thanks.
No problem! I made a follow up video. :) Sugar Scrub Follow Up- Consistency
Lol I had a finding nemo moment when you said just keep stirring.. Just keep stirring just keep stirring
We had just watched "Finding Nemo", and that song gets stuck in my head like nothing else. Lol! :D
what do we do we stir!
Can you use polysorbat 80 in place of emulsifying wax, as an emulsifying agent? x
Thanks so much for sharing, I can't wait to try this!!
LOOOOOVE your little stainless steel measuring cups! Can you share where you purchased and what sizes they are?
You can find them in the kitchen aisle at Walmart. They're stainless steel condiment cups. :)
Oh no!!! I live in the UK :(( I will have to try our department stores or ebay> Thanks for responding :))
I really enjoyed your tutorial, but for some reason I could barely hear it. All of my volume was on the highest settings. But I have found the same problem with of the other videos. But going to try your scrub. looks great.
I tried it and it works
Looks fun. How many jars did this fill and were those 8 oz jars? Also would I need the soy wax or could I use shea butter in place of that?
Question: how many ozs does the recipe yield? I want to make a small test batch. Thanks!
What are the complete ingredients can you tell me
Hi Sarah, Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. Sounds great and will have to give it a try. Question though, when and at what temp did you add the preservative. I must had missed it. Thank you
I followed the recipe to the T and it looked great! The oil rose to the top and stayed, where did I go wrong??
Sarah this looks to be a very interesting scrub, I would like to try if you don't mind. However, I didn't hear how much stearic acid to use in the formula? Most certainly I will give you credit for this.
You can see the written recipe if you pause it at 1:47. However, I'll be sure to add the recipe to the video description as well. :)

Beautiful!! Sarah! How much Stearic Acid was it? Thank you!!
The sugar doesn’t dissolve in the warmth of the wax and oils?
Lovely tutorial!!!!! I have reformulated my recipe to be better now after watching this! Who did you get to help you design your sugar scrub labels or what software did you use??????
Hello thanks for the video. What size labels do you you for these and are they 8 ounce jars?
Do you have to use soy wax or can you just add more e wax? Thanks

Where do you get the containers for packaging?
Cool. Thanks!

Hi Sarah..just wondering what the shelf life of the scrubs are?
This is a great recipie. Can you help me understand the need for the preservative since there are no water based products. I used Phenonip and the final product smelled terrible, regardless of the essential oils I tried. Thanks!
sue hieber when you use or someone else uses it, water will most likely get into it. The perservative will help from spoiling.
I love this video!!
I love this tutorial, thank you for posting! I don't have soy wax though, so I'm wondering: if I wanted to make this with candelilla wax instead of soy, would you use the same amount? Or less?
Hello, I have a question about sugar. Are you using normal sugar that we use to cook food? Thanks
Hi Sarah :) Thank you for sharing your awesome recipe :) Is there something I can substitute for the soy wax? I really want to make this but I can't use any soy products. I'd love your input.
Beeswax works great as well! :)
+PinkLilly I use candelilla wax in my vegan scrubs, you can also use carnauba wax as they are both vegan.
What is the difference between an Emulsified Body Sugar Scrub and a Lip Sugar Scrub? Is a Lip Sugar Scrub a different recipe, or is it just using lip safe colorants and FOs?
Soy wax like what you use to make candles?
yeap...just make sure it doesn't have any extra additives
can i use Epsom salt instead of sugar in this recipe?
If I don't have Optiphen Plus could I sub regular Optiphen or even Phenonip? Would the usage rates be the same? Love this recipe!
+Ian Bracone I use regular Optiphen at the same usage rate and it works just the same for me.
Can you use sodium citrate as a preservative instead of the one you used?
Hy..per soy wax the substitut? Thanks
Can you please tell me what's the purpose of Stearic acid and soy wax? I'm trying to get clarity 😊

Can i use salt instead of sugar?
u never mention in video or description how much steric acid u used
+KiKi Carr The stearic acid is listed on my recipe shot at 1:47 in the video and is also in the video description.
If you use Phenonip instead of Optiphen, would it be the same amount?
Can you use polawax for both the emulsifying and soy waxes? Even if it makes it not vegan.
Mica is made from beetle shells therefore making it vegetarian not vegan. How do you ring in?
how many 8 oz jars does this recipe make?
Could you write the ingredients ?
Thanks
Do we have to use soy wax

Sarah Milroy Greetings. What preservative did you use? The video did not say the exact type or brand.
Full recipe in video description. :-)
Hi, l'm crazy for try do this but I want to know how many jars do I need for this recipe?
I hope you can answer me. Thanks
Are you using organic granulated sugar or beet sugar?

Thank you Sarah. New Sub! 👋😊
how long can this last please?
Is Brown Sugar Vegan?
how did you determine the amt of Optiphen Plus to use
you can weight your final product and use 1% of optiphen plus(i think thats the recommended)
Is the soy wax necessary? I don’t have it but I need to make a batch of this by Thursday 😩😂
Or may I up the Stearic Acid?
Soy wax? As in soy wax used to make soy candles?
yeap...just make sure it doesn't have extra additives
hi sara... i made my first batch of this and i have some oil seperation on top. i used 35 oz of sugar. i'm thinking maybe i didn't stir the oils and e wax and such enough to fully emulsify. can this be saved? thanks.
Yeah that's happens to me too if I let my scrub sit. Just keep a plastic spoon on hand and mix it whenever it separates. It's not a big deal
What could sub the soy wax with? I just ordered some 444 but don't know if that is body safe?
where did u get your jars from?
+Kendra Williams You can get those types of jars at Bulk Apothecary, wholesale supplies plus and even Uline.
Would this work with salt instead of sugar?
Definitely! You may have to change the amount you use, but it should work. :)
where do u get the labels??
+NeNe Bee I design, print, and cut all of my labels myself. :)
oooh nice :)
Sarah Milroy (Spicy Pinecone) what do you use to design the labels ? Like do you draw them out? Use some kind of draw program ect ?
You didn't mention how much stearic acid
If you pause the video at 1:47, you can see the written out recipe. I went ahead and also added it to the video description. :)
@sarahmilroy where you purchase your labels.
I design, print, and cut my labels myself. :)
Then can you make a video on who you make and prince them out please
i have a very quick question if I cant find the preservatives can I not use honey or something else instead?
Hi! If you try to use an all natural preservative you can get mold
honey, vitamin e, grapefruit oil, tea tree oil, etc. are NOT preservatives. ..if you skip the preservative you will end with bacteria growth even if you cant see it it starts yo gtow within 1-2 weeks
Nice! Very pretty. But I don't know if you know but sugar isn't vegan - neither is red colorant? Many times fragrance isn't either. It is vegetarian though. I am vegan so very careful.
Oops I see it duh sorry thanks
What the heck is a non-vegan friendly sugar scrub! 😕
It would be made with beeswax and non-vegan sugar (sugar bleached using the bones of animals. I kid you not, it's how most white sugar is made!)
Doesn't the heat damage the properties ?
