Guy was one of the best. So glad I discovered him. That first tune was perfection. Every trick in the book played in perfect clinical surgical form. Musical yet technical.
Trying to compare great guitarists falls squarely in the apples and oranges cliche. Nobody is going to say Chet Atkins was better than Jimi or Paco De Lucia was not up to the level of EVH.
@@jreagle58 In no way was I trying to "compare" any guitarist with any other guitarist. I made a simple, factual statement that, obviously, some people are struggling to comprehend the meaning of.
Flippin' music "producers" and record labels, so unbelievably vampire-like and so destructive of truly talented musicians. Mark Hollis suffered the same way though working with record labels and their stupid "producers" and "promoters."
you prolly dont care but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my girlfriend recently :)
Ahhh hauntingly beautifull. Mind expanding. Even after listening to it multiple times, it’s hard to in your head predict whats comming next in his playing. And it’s never a showoff, it’s all music for it’s own sake, not for his sake. And he does not refer to his own greatness, he refers to other players and to his hard work to achive were he is. And he effortlessly shares his knowledge.
So sad he is no longer with us, one of the most complete guitarists whoever lived. I feel he should have been venerated when he was alive, he forgot more than most of us will ever know. Truly great !!
Danny was truly the Master. Love that old B/W promo photo from 1959 of Danny holding the Huge blonde Gibson Arch top when he played with Ronnie and the Offbeats’ - I think he was about 14 years old. RIP Danny.
Thank you very much for posting so much Danny Gatton content. He is my favorite player and I just with I’d seen him play in person, considering he was a fellow Washingtonian and a local legend.
totally, at times he is showing grace in restraint here...classy man.....he was a genius, and i have found that trying to engage a genius and keep their interest is no easy task. I just think they are functioning on a higher level than most of us mortals!
"Yeah,Eric Johnson ...he's tremendous" Coming from one of my favorite country, blugrass, swing, jazz guitarists..giving credits to my other favorite number 1 guitarist,Mr.Eric Johnson
That was a warning, protect your hands always. Glass cuts deeper than any metal or wood. I cut 2 tendons of my right hand causing index and middle to just dangle...takes a skilled surgeon to fix and at-least 6 months of physio to even be able to move your fingers let alone play Guitar. Playing an instrument is great therapy but you misd the dexterity and you lose a bit of sensitivity. Mr Gatton still managed to sound "unique" inspite of the tendon damage cos he used his brain and adapted, I never knew of his injury but I do empathise. He really was "Special". I bet he would be a top 10 choice for every genre of Music if he was still with us. I can imagine him and Elvis in paradise playing all the SUN catalogue. Anyway don't firget to protect your hands when doing anything near sharp/rusty/heavy/ jobs and don't use your hands to hurt...use them to create Music and peace.
Lol..."How's your sex life?" Hahaha! I think what he said about his playing and identity at 7:38 says a lot...he seemed really honest and a little hurt about it when he said it. I imagine it may have just compounded as time went on.
Like all geniuses Danny was a very complex person....I read one time and I can't remember who said it about Danny but they said you could just see the genius stirring in his eyes...I always felt so bad for his wife and daughter.... suicide always leaves behind a wake of destruction......😏😏
The Humbler. Might as well call him The Great Humiliator (that's what I call my #1 driver) cause anyone trying to cut heads with this dude will end up on the floor in a puddle. He left us way too soon. My favorite guitar player, Greg Koch, openly admits to ripping off Gatton licks all the time.
He was truly spectacular. But I must say the best part of the song is Buddy Emmons's solo. Gatton just scrubbing the strings, the bass cooking along and Big E goes into powerglide.
The “we used to be friends” and “i absorbed quite a but from him and vice versa” comments maybe hint at some accusations of one of them (or both) stealing stuff from one another, they did room together at one time. I dont know the whole story and i dont think anybody did other than the two of them I happen to like both guys and in no way am i saying anything negative about either, ive seen buchanan fans crap on danny and go as far as to say “first time i heard danny I thought that guy does a pretty good roy impression” im also pretty sure if you read phil carlsen roy bio american axe he shits on danny too There’s audio from a steve newton interview with danny where danny mentions having a bunch of roy tapes (live or otherwise idk) im sure the both of them did bounce idea’s off one another especially since they were roommates at one time. Between the two of them id say danny covered more ground than roy did stylistically
@@knightfall9394 I too enjoy both of them but I Roy was more of a blues player. I heard Roy play and country a well rounded player but I'm going to be honest here and I'm not crapping on either. But personally I feel Danny was much more deeper in Jazz. I agree with Steve Vai that Danny came as close as anyone as being the greatest guitarist ever. He had encyclopedic knowledge he could pull out of his ass on the fly that it's downright jaw dropping. Sometimes though I feel he changes riffs too much though and makes the music choppy like he's constantly shifty gears and can't just stay still. But when country Hot Shots like Johnny Hiland say you are their favorite player that's saying something. Both men had their demons and were tormented souls. Very tragic in both cases.
Guy was one of the best. So glad I discovered him. That first tune was perfection. Every trick in the book played in perfect clinical surgical form. Musical yet technical.
This is fucking heartbreaking. There has never been a guitar player that can say "I"m better than Danny Gatton". Rest In Peace, Brother.
Alas your words are the truth. We will never get to hear him play again so let's get all we can find and on him and treasure it all.
No true guitar player would say they are better than anyone it doesn't work that way with mature musicians.
True.
Trying to compare great guitarists falls squarely in the apples and oranges cliche. Nobody is going to say Chet Atkins was better than Jimi or Paco De Lucia was not up to the level of EVH.

Danny never got what he deserved he blew everyone away on his Telecaster no one like him 🎼🙏
Absolutely brilliant, total genius!!! Such a crying' shame he didn't live his life the same way!!!
Danny must have been born with this gift.
The world was a much better place with this man in it .
This interview revealed how Danny was feeling at the time, a harbinger of what was to come. Very sad, very sad indeed.
Flippin' music "producers" and record labels, so unbelievably vampire-like and so destructive of truly talented musicians. Mark Hollis suffered the same way though working with record labels and their stupid "producers" and "promoters."

@Abdullah Andy yea, been watching on instaflixxer for years myself :D
Never actually listened to the interview and damn you are dead on.
Maybe the best video of Danny just playing that I have seen! Thanks
Only one Danny Gatton.
Only one.
totally a virtuoso, countless hours crafting this country jazz blues rock a billy lap steel techniques....extraordinaire human being
Thanks for the great video I love the fact that I can see both hands clearly
You had Danny and then everyone else who wished they could play like Danny...we all sure miss your genius Danny....🎸🎸🎸

The end of this is a real glimpse into something. Not sure what, but man what a talent.
Still amazes! Thanks for vid 💙
Danny was the greatest for me 🎼🙏
Just amazing what you can do with the ever simple and humble Telecaster..
What about that Roy guy ?”yeah I know him “ priceless!😎
His eyes are heartbreaking at the end. Heavy lies the crown.
I have that saved...youve turned me onto it in the past.
Great listen
As close to the greatest ever as a guitar player could get. Arguments welcomed.
The best ever
They don’t call him the humbler for nothing 😮
This is so awesome but so hard to watch. God bless Danny
Danny was the best.
Man, that was deep and real, big Respect to Danny. 1983, I was 6 then.
Thanks Bob that was fantastic, superb interview, Danny started to open up.
Thanks for posting this. I treasure anything I come across from Danny.
Thank you. These are very precious (parts 1 and 2); there isn’t enough available on Danny Gatton.
man this is absolutely unreal
Danny seemed even better when he was younger, keep discovering more gems. I think Danny had such a range of styles
Danny was truly the Master. Love that old B/W promo photo from 1959 of Danny holding the Huge blonde Gibson Arch top when he played with Ronnie and the Offbeats’ - I think he was about 14 years old. RIP Danny.
Absolutely incredible!!!
Thanks so much for sharing these! Just wonderful.....RIP Danny.
Gatton was amazing. Overlooked....
He makes it look so easy.
What a monster player
The music biz it’s so nice , really talented people get screwed up , by the less talented
Those tremolo rolls at 2:40! Oh man! Certified guitar player, indeed!
Thank you very much for posting so much Danny Gatton content. He is my favorite player and I just with I’d seen him play in person, considering he was a fellow Washingtonian and a local legend.
DAMN ❤🙏❤
What A Guitar Player.
You can really feel his edginess here. Must've been so frustrating for him. Great video though.

I swear that man had extra fingers on his right hand.
Whole bushel of oysters in there! 😂Thank you Danny 💜

I think that first tune (starting at about 1:03) is 'Crazy Arms', a 1950s hit for Ray Price. Also recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis, and others.
I may never touch my guitar again.

I can tell he felt miserable about that take. I know the feeling. Feels like you let everyone down.
Substitute me for him...
Wow, he was good!. Does anyone know what song Danny is playing here?

An incredible talent , gone way to early 💀🌵
😁😁😁😁😁
The clams.....Buddy Rich would have kicked him off the bus for that......
Interesting comment about how he used to be friends with Roy Buchanan
What is the song at the beginning?
Crazy Arms Ray Price
Ungodly...
2:40 watch him work the volume knob and pick notes at the same time with his spider fingers!
Joe bhonamessa can’t play this stuff . Sorry fer the spelling . Lol
It sounds like him and Roy Buchanan had a falling out.

That tune was Ray price's Blue ain't the word For the way that I feel,,, (Crazy Arms)
