"I'm not busting my hands and doing this anymore". What a fateful decision for the music world, as he decided to leave the trades. Got to meet him (and I'm in the trades), so this comment really caught my ear... Thanks for posting this.
Amazing player. Danny’s playing just makes me smile, he was just something else. When he plays mystery train, and makes it sound like it’s got echo on it.... Sheer talent. It sounds just like the record.
Thanks for posting this. I'm guess this was in the 1990s. He said "That was in the 80s" at one point. This might have been one of his last interviews. Danny was a wonderful person and talent.
Incredible guitar player. As a native born Washingtonian. I got to see him live. Up close and personal. And I think it was on a blonde Tele (but I am color blind). Perhaps Gallaghers Pub off Connecticut Avenue?
That is so great! I've never heard an interview with him before and it was fascinating as you might suspect. When he starts talking about Oscar Peterson and Dvorak (!) in the same conversation, you KNOW he's something special! So special that the great Adam Lopez has a tattoo of Danny's face on his forearm. Love you Adam..you are a badass player as well my friend.
I did renovation work during the day messing up my hands and arm muscles ... then go play classical and Spanish guitar at night in restaurants. I was damn good at drywall but it sure as hell didn't help my playing.
Danny saying Roy Buchanon's piano player playing like Oscar Peterson was something I never knew. Roy Buchanon and Danny Gatton two unbelievable guitar players and telly masters, both with the titles of the " Best Unknown Guitarist" ...Well, they are known to guitarists. They both supposedly committed suicide. Very strange and sad. But their music still lives on.
Danny Gatton could certainly play anything, and like Les Paul said, Danny’s gonna do it better than anyone. The Humbler. Chet was great, a true icon, but even he said more than once, that Jerry Reed was actually better than he was. Jerry horsed around so much with humorous songs and acting, it makes one wonder how good he would have been, had he focused on picking.
** IMO - that 30 seconds of Mystery Train picking he just did is his BEST ! Slow, Solid and Clean ... Awesome !! ** Forget all that fast bs stuff, never impressed me. He Is GOOD, No Doubt. GOD Bless
interesting to hear Danny reminisce about cutting up his fingers and hitting them with hammers in the course of his trade work, because if memory serves me correctly Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath was missing the tips of two fingers on his fretting hand because he cut them off by accident in a sheet metal shop where he worked. Tony actually fastened some kind of metal and leather replacement fingertips so that he could have use of all of his chording fingers. Not that Tony Iommi and Danny Gatton were in the same league as guitar players, of course! And I assume most of you all know that Django Reinhardt only had two working fingers on his left (fretting) hand because of a fire in the Gypsy camp.....sorry, I should probably say Roma Camp instead, Gypsy being considered rather derogative these days....
Imagine if Django had switched to left handed....or Iommi to right handed...Iommi said if he'd been older he'd have switched ( like its that ezi).. Danny Gatton was just beyond the greatest but as thay say "genius has it's price"...
The King is dead...but long live the King...he was a walking talking encyclopedia of Americana guitar...if there was a better guitarist, I haven't heard them

Amen. Nobody could touch Danny. Mind-boggling talent.
Man, the world lost a rare talent when Danny checked out on his own. A terrible, tragic loss.
perhaps the greatest natural guitar talent ever. also a super nice & humble guy. RIP
Many enjoyable days I've had listening to Danny Gatton 🙏👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Danny Gatton ...a legend.

What a lovely humble man, rest in peace Mr Gatton
Saw Danny Gatton live at the Lone Star in NYC.
This is super... god bless the late great Danny Gatton
Enjoy listening to him talk. Put a lot of work in....... I have an immense amount of respect for him.
I will always remember Danny Gatton as The Bruce Lee Of Guitar - no one will EVER reach his level again.
Such a thoughtful, articulate man. Unlike a lot of great players, he can explain exactly what and how he plays.
Wow, thanx for sharing this treasure, adds to what little there is of the late great Danny Gatton!
Great stuff ...Working class hero & guitar genius!

Genius has it's price.
Can't believe this is real. The entrance to Plato's cave. Thanks.
This is the exit out of the cave. That, and the fact we don't live on a spinning ball.
Danny was his own slap-delay. lol. Just an amazing guitarist.
Saw Danny at the old 9:30 Club
The GOAT.
His ear was magic perfect pitch!
🐐
I agree!
Thank you for posting this! Such a loss of ‘American Music’…
Interesting background information on a great player, thanks!
The very best, unknown , guitarists in the world!!!

Danny Gatton, the guitar player's guitar player!
Danny and Jeff Beck both, and both do a killer impersonation of Scotty Moore if you’ve heard Jeff do his.
hard to believe he took all that talent and checked out. I have an old Roger Miller show from the tour Danny was on, that I listen to all the time.
Fantastic. Thank you. 🇺🇸
Grand Rapids Michigan!
Wonderful touch and musicality

A humble man who was known as "The Humbler"!
Built in echo. amazing.
@johntiger5 Danny was referring to Dick Heintze, who played with Roy, as playing like Occar
Thanks John!
Certainly!
Danny's friend John-would love to hear your stories.

Roy was good. Danny even better, which is saying a lot.
The Man....
Danny was the best 🎼👌🙏
GOAT ❌🧢
Dude had a built-in echoplex
The top guitarist Worlwide
Danny Gatton The Greatest OF All Time ( same goes for Chet Atkins )

Don’t leave out Lenny! ❤
not one distorted note, refreshing, he's one of the very best players who can actually play a tune.

Not too impressed with you.
The only guy that's better than Chester. Best player I've ever heard! "Never play unless the I'm with the band" wow! What a giant!
WHAT REALY HAPPEND TO DANNY?
Read "Unfinished Business".. does Danny justice-good & band.

@fermatichebellosei1595 and you are being assshole.
Jesus guitarist here
Who is/was the interviewer?
I believe it was Ed Eastridge who ran Big Mo Records
It sounds like Tommy Emmanuel
@@the_kings_musician and Michael Caine!
David L. Whitehurst I agree. The voice sounds exactly like Tommy E
Is he British? It kinda sounds like it to me.

Amen. Nobody could touch Danny. Mind-boggling talent.
I mean Oscar😉
🥹👏
Why does he keep wiping his hand on his pants?
Probably due to being under hot studio lights and his hands are sweating.
Those old Fender jazz picks are pretty slippery ;)
Maybe it's just a tick or a habit. Pretty common
Scotty Moore used a thumb pick. I'm surprised that DG hadn't sussed that.
Not always brother
DG: "What's that"?
I believe DG just misspoke
@@AdamLopezMusic regardless of the type of pick, he’s on point about the hybrid picking which imo is just one of the hardest things to do?
Tragic,
