Danny Gatton & Roger Miller "Austin City Limits January 24,1983

  • In the early 80's Danny Gatton joined Roger Millers' band for several years. This is a clip of "Orange Blossom Special" and another song that Roger did. The date was 1/24/83 and Danny was in top-form playing his '53 Telecaster. Even while Roger sang his songs, you can hear Danny in the background playing some simply "amazing" country-style rhythm guitar licks without getting in the way of Rogers' singing........Danny lets it all out when he does "Orange Blossom Special", which was a show-stopper for Danny......

    Danny was the last word as far as the electric guitar is concerned as I don't believe anyone else ever attained such undeniable mastery of the fretboard and knowledge of American roots, jazz blues and popular music. At the same time, what an absolute treat for me to see him play with the great Roger Miller whose natural swing and lyrical genius made me a fan over 50 years ago. These two greats have left us now: Roger in 1992 and Danny 2 years later, a fact that makes this recording all the more valuable. Rest in peace guys.

      Very well said. He is definitely on the short list of greatest mastery of the instrument of any human to live. Wow they don't even show you the band through the end...right hand of God...that hybrid picking stuff...total mastery

      Although Danny Gatton was an innovative stylist of rock blues and country guitar, it's debatable that he was the greatest who ever lived. I would submit that many others were great stylists, but also great technical players with a deep grasp of music theory. Check out the UA-cams of other unsung greats like Ted Greene or Lenny Breau. Both had such deep technical abilities that they could, at will recreate the stylings of others as well as play in their own styles. In fact some of their styles of play are admired by other guitar maestros of many music genres. I'd say Danny's high mark of performance came when recorded the "Relentless" album with Hammond B3 genius, Joey DeFrancesco. IMO, Joey's encyclopedic knowledge of music theory and huge chops pushed Danny to play at a higher level out of necessity to keep up. Here's a UA-cam link from their take on the Wayne Shorter tune, "Chess Players": ua-cam.com/video/yWLrsb080-A/v-deo.html

    On this day, there is absolutely nobody who can pick the way Danny did. The closest guy I know is Josh Smith, but even he, recognizes that some of what Danny could do is out of reach. His right hand technique is just out of this world. But one should not be only lured to his dexterity. He also knew harmony and melody and his musical ability was border less. He could combine rockabilly and jazz, blues, rock, what not.... as often in this world, geniuses often have other demons. I regret that he chose to part from life.

      @nohohank2777 Рік тому +1

      There’s a difference between getting “high” and taking just enough, of whatever(Roger was known to take uppers mostly, often combined with some downers to soften the edges of the uppers, and I’d reckon some pain pills too) to provide a great performance for your audience. Roger always did. He apparently gave up the pills in the early-mid 1970’s, and suffered a dry spell in his writing as a consequence. I’m sure he got back on them though, it’s not easy performing like that. I saw one performance from the mid 70’s I think on Ralph Emery’s show at the time, and he seemed like he’d had some quaaludes or something, was very loose and hilarious. Always was hilarious though, one of a kind and one of my favorite writers and singers of all time…I think he’s often underrated.
