    Good review. I think it's worth mentioning that Leapers (the parent company) has a branch of made in USA products, under the UTG Pro name, if that's the deciding criteria. Aside from that they offer a lifetime guarantee on their stuff, and do offer a nice veteran discount. Most gun parts suffer from expensive price tags due to needless marketing wank. If the product meets the minimum requirements for its intended role then price and brand name are stupid criteria for dictating selection.

    The truth is I'm constantly flummoxed and mystified regarding mounts and their prices. I buy expensive ones AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. I just assume they're of better quality, but I have no metrics to determine quality (except perhaps running a lapping bar through the rings -- but there's also a wide price range among lapping bars!!!). I come away (quite convincingly) feeling I've been made a fool of.

    My biggest concern is durability. Not just on this one, but all cantilever mounts. I know it's not your thing C-does, but I'd like to see all mounts endure torture testing. I'm mainly worried about bending of the front extension. If the optic survives a fall, but the mount bends, that's no bueno. 6061 is bubblegum soft, and yet there are $500 mounts made out of it. 7075 is stronger than SOME steels and "near as makes no difference" has the same cost and machining time. If the Swampfox freedom mount got rid of those damn scope ring tapes from the 1990s it might stand a chance of being the best. Aside from Swampfox, 7075 starts at $300, on a good day. Why the hell the industry hasn't gone to making everything out of 7075, I'll never know. The stuff I make doesn't need that kind of structural integrity, but I still use 7075 for everything. Anyway, if anyone can point me towards some good torture testing videos for mounts, I'd appreciate it.

    LaRue is NOT 🤢 good mount. The camming mechanism will gouge underneath side of rail and progressively become looser every time you dismount and remount and if you adjust cam to be tighter it will then again gouge even deeper. For nice upper that's monolithic this kind of mount is absolutely garbage and unacceptable. it's like installing new rim that will progressively damage your new car. retarded design.
    newer bobro mount with
    Integrated recoil lug or adm is way to go.

    I have one of these on my SPR along with an RMR mount and I have to say... Usually when you get something made of Chinesum, Picatinny usually means weaver... Leapers actually makes these to Picatinny spec, on my Aero Precision M4E1 upper, there was nearly ZERO slop in the mount/rail interface. The RMR mount is solid also, I used it to mount a Holosun 508t as my backup optic. Great for the price.

  • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
    @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 місяців тому +3

    Thats certainly a good looking mount. I've tried a UTG mount before with good results. I dont recall the model. It was their 30 mm offset Q.D. mount. I found it to be well made and finished. I liked the design but the one issue was the base was just 6-8 mm/ 5/16" too long to allow room for my BUIS.
    It adjusted and mounted easily and locked securely. I really liked the locking lever operation. Not as beefy as I'd like but they locked and unlocked easily with 1 hand.
    Repeatability was good, not 100% but always returned to within 1" at 100 meters. My main misgivings about the inexpensive Chinesium mounts is that they're made from suspect materials. Idk if its cast aluminum or just some certain alloy that is just lighter than typical US produced but somehow these mounts are noticeably lighter than their high end US made counterparts. The hardware also tends to be smaller and somewhat suspect as well.
    All in all though, I gotta say the things work and work well. Would I carry it into battle? Probably not if I had a choice but for anything short of that I think they're a viable alternative for anyone on a budget. They work.
    Now, given my preference, I'll take my go-to Q.D. mounts which are the American Defense Manufacturing recon Q.D. mounts. I now have 5 of them in both 30 mm and 34 mm models. They typically run about $155 to $185 or so which is considerably less than LaRue, Bo Bro, G,G&G, and others.
    The ADM recon is a hoss of a mount. Big and beefy all around including the hardware. And you can be assured it's all high grade and properly hardened.
    The recon is skeletonized and milled out where possible but nevertheless it's a bit heavier than many due to its heavy duty 3 piece vertically split ring design and extremely strong base and clamp design. I use the 2-clamp models but ADM does offer single clamp models as well. As beefy as they are the single clamp models would be more than adequate and substantially lighter however I prefer the extra stability and redundancy of the double locker.
    The locking clamp design is my only complaint with the recon.
    They adjust easily and clamp securely with minimal effort but unlocking can be difficult when properly adjusted for maximum clamping. I find it takes 2 hands to easily accomplish, 1 to depress the locking lever and the other to lift the clamping lever.
    I have 3 older models that operate as described and 2 newer redesigned models that are a bit easier to unclamp.
    Performance wise these mounts are unbeatable. The ring design accommodates any misalignments or manufacturing imperfections with the scope body, holds securely and mounts quickly and easily. I've found repeatability among all 5 of my mounts to be 100% or so close to it I cant notice the difference. Return to zero is always within the normal accuracy range of the rifle and ammo I'm using at the time so I'd call that 100%. You do have to exercise care when mounting for perfect RTZ. Just always use the same technique. Mount into the same Picatinny slot, apply forward and laterall pressure towards clamps and clamp the rear clamp first, then the front and wango-tango, ready to bango! She'll return to within 3-5 mm/ 3/16" of previous zero if not closer, every time.
    All in all these are my preferred mounts. Rock solid operation and 100% repeatability coupled with to hell and back reliability and durability for considerably less than most makes the ADM recon the only one I need.
    If you can swing the price of admission I HIGHLY recommend the ADM recon.
    However, if you're on a tight budget and just cant part with almost 2 large, the UTG Q.D. mounts are a viable option imo.

    • @sluttybutt
      @sluttybutt 5 місяців тому +1

      I moved to a single clamp ADM from my fixed UTG. I find that you don't need the clamp set to be that tight to ensure security. I zeroed, removed it to zero a PRO and reattached it with an almost perfect rtz (no sled to confirm, just bag). This is set to one-handed tightness. One more 1/8 clocking of the nut renders it stupidly tight and I don't think it's necessary.
      I would probably have got the UTG QR if I had known it existed, as the only reason for the change was I actually needed QD for this rifle. Luckily the ADM was only $120 so I'm not especially sad. The UTG will get a home elsewhere. I just dislike the styling a lot.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 місяців тому +1

      @@sluttybutt - roger that. Yeah on my 3 original ADM recon Q.D. mounts the adjustments are a little coarse, so on my FN M4 RECCE my choice is a little loose to the point the 1 clamp couldnt hold tight enough to prevent movement (tiny bit forehand aft. The play between lug and Pic rail teeth) or a little too tight, requiring 2 hands to remove.
      Realistically, even set a little loose, by the time the other clamp was engaged the mount would be rock solid but for the sake of a "bomb proof" setup I go a little too tight.
      Both my 34 mm mounts are the newer models with finer adjustments so those can be set perfectly. Plus their redesigned locking latch is easier to use 1 handed.
      Regardless the ADM recons are my mount of choice. $120 was a GREAT deal! Was that a sale or used?
      Think I paid $150 for my 30 mm models and $165 for both my 34 mm models.

      @@sluttybutt - btw the Q.D. UTG I have is made and works quite well. I really like the operation of the clamps and clamp locks. They're easily adjusted and 1 hand operable though not as beefy as I prefer.
      My only real complaint with the mount is with the length of the base. It's just a little too long to allow room for my Magpul MBUIS.
      It's a great mount especially for the $52 I paid for it on sale from Primary Arms a few years back.

      @@AdministrativeReload I sure am.
      I like Aero, I have some aero parts no complaints, its not personal but scopes need a certain amount of surface area contact with the mount to perform well.
      EVERY SINGLE other scope manufacturer makes them a certain size for a reason. You can not simple cut the rings by a 2/3's and expect them to hold the same way.
      If yours work fine, terrific. But let me ask you this....since weight is a concern for 90% of AR users....why aren't ALL professionals shooters, competitors and every other shooter just running Aero mounts to save 3-6oz off the weight of their mounts? It seems like a no brainers right? Its bc they fail....a lot.
      I'd LOVE it they worked perfectly! I am trying to cut every last oz off my 18" SPR.
      Also its a matter of physics. You may be running an extremely lightweight scope (SFP, low mag, etc) which require less surface area due to the lighter weight. I am running a 3-18x MPVO.
      If a lightweight mount comes out that works perfectly you can expect it to cost nearly $500. Scope makers RIP US OFF bc we got conditioned to pay $300-$400 for quality mount. Meanwhile China cloned the Badger mount for $50 and they are amazing quality!!!! Badger mounts likely cost about $25 to make and their mark up is 1500% - its bonkers. So a lightweight quality mount would run $500 EASY!!
