  • What is considered by many to be one of the most underrated JDM cars to come out of the ’90s. Even though it had a short run the Mitsubishi 3000GT had a huge impact on the Japanese tuner scene. And although they were pretty popular back in the day, we unfortunately don’t see or even hear about them much anymore. Powered by the 3.0 V6 VR-4 paired with active aero that was completely ahead of its time, AND four-wheel steering the Mitsubishi 3000GT is one of those cars that deserves some more recognition. Tody Alex dives in deep into a little bit of the history and legend surround Mitsubishi’s top dog of the 1990s. Let us know what car you would like us to cover next down in the comments below!

My burning desire to travel to Japan developed when I was 5 years old. That would have been in 1989. It was greatly influenced by video games from Nintendo and cars from Nissan. Other things appeared that made me want to go there even more.
I became fascinated with what was and wasn't sold in the USA since the late 1990s. Using search engines which were popular before Google led to interesting results. We could see bits and pieces of things that were translated differently, but never the whole story. I also read that the Nissan 240SX had a 2.0L turbo engine in Japan, and I refused to believe it.
I had some friends who were huge otaku, so I had an idea. I said "If we ever get to go to Japan, let's bring back a genuine school uniform as proof of the trip."

Preach! As an owner of a built 92 VR4 I garentee you most people who talk about these cars know nothing of the platform. I'll defend it to the grave. Biggest problem with these cars is misinformation and similarly to DSM guys terrible previous owners who are youtube certified. Also they are not DSM's all 3k/stealth/GTO were built in nagoya japan. Okay, I got a question. The 3000gt was criticized (and still is) for being such a heavy car and having not much room in the engine bay for owners work to on its engine. Moreover, it has a transverse engine configuration, which is such a weird setup for a supposedly performance halo car.
In your honest opinion, is swapping the current engine with an LS4 a feasible move to solve such problems? Is a 3000gt with a transverse V8/front wheel drive build a sound suggestion? After all, a lot of the weight in the 3000gt comes from its AWD system. What's your take on take?
I'm sorry for posing such a weird question. I don't mean to offend you if you have a purist belief on how a Japanese car should always be (that is, it should not have an american engine), but I had this question gnawing at the back of my mind for such a long time, now.

Jesse I’m a 3000GT owned as well a couple things I recommend is check your rack and pinion from personal experience I got mine and a day later I put it on a lift to find out it’s completely blown out barely holding on so I’d check that also if you get any of them older than 1996 get ready to learn how to read your error codes from your obd 1 port with a multimeter there’s videos on how to do it also another thing the all wheel drive models so the VR-4 have a tendency to destroy their rear differential if it doesn’t have its regular maintenance done so when you’re test driving make sure there is no grinding from the rear diff or metal clacking sounds and immediately service your diff as soon as you get it home if you get the VR-4 also this applies to any car with a timing belt check the timing belt when you’re looking at the car if I remember correctly it’s two 10mm bolts that hold on the upper front cover and you can pull it off and look at it if it looks good then you’re golden man enjoy your amazing badass Mitsubishi 3000gt VR-4 that will smoke a Supra from the same age stock vs stock

I had a buddy that owned a 91 VR4 in the pearl white...such a beautiful car. He decided early on that he didn’t care much for the complexity of the car, so he removed the active aero, installed coil overs, and disabled the rear wheel steering. After that he replaced the whole exhaust system, did an intake, a blow-off valve, and had it professionally tuned. For being as heavy as it was, when he was in low rpm the car was super fast and had very little lag.
Considering you can buy a nice lower mileage one on BaT in the high teens it’s a real 90s Japanese sports car bargain.

Nice video! I have had three 3/S cars through the years since 2003. I currently own two (a '95 GTO, which I TTd with 15Gs and a '92 Stealth ES). I absolutely love these cars and never want to get rid of mine! There is a mounting problem with reliability issues, because these cars are getting pretty old now, but I am able to work on mine myself, so that's a bonus... The fastest example of these is into the 8s in the quarter mile drag racing and has about 1,250hp so they are very potent cars! All one needs to do to get good treatment from them is to treat them well in return!

The non-turbo is slower, yes, but has respectable potential and the 6g72 loves spray, lol. Mine has been a rock solid daily for 2 years now, and I wouldn't trade it for any other car. Slapping some Garret GT26s on there that I have next. Classic (and original) porn star red paint too. Has a lot of sentimental value to me too. Used to belong to my friend before he passed away. Its an imported 1990 GTO twin turbo (Japanese version of the VR4) The first month was scary, but once I had broken down the different systems under the bonnet (yes I'm English lol) its actually just like any other car. Just very VERY well packaged. If you know about cars, they're no different from anything else. Modern supercars have only just cause up with active aero and active exhausts. But I wouldn't trade. God I love this car so much, makes me giddy with excitement to see mine rolling after the engine is built, and for those of you wondering no lol I'm not going the "mock vr4" set up. A positive displacement supercharger and air to water intercooler underneath would probably take up less room and create less complexity. Since it is a built engine, I'm guessing you got pistons that had a compression ratio lower than the NA version.

From a 3000GT owner it's a very rewarding and gratifying experience building up one of these things to be something awesome and they are so much fun but they are also a headache they're notorious for being unreliable I have one of the cleanest ones I've seen in the area and I'm still spending 5,000 every couple of years on repairs on average. I just did a 60k tune up not too long ago about 5000 miles ago and that includes the water pump the timing belt and the tensioner. The tensioner just failed and I jumped timing and basically destroyed the engine. Then I find out the tensioner was not under any type of warranty or anything. So basically these cars are super expensive to fix and anytime you do something you are rolling the dice with an old car especially this one. Sure you could have a shop do your 60k for like freaking $1,200 but having a shop do everything gets super expensive and I'm pretty sure the warranty I'm at tensioner is only like a year anyway so if it slips after that you're in the same boat with a blown engine. I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone at I'd still I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone at I'd I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone at I'd still say it I had so much fun with mine and I'd recommend it to anyone I'd still say it was definitely worth the experience but if you're someone who's younger or is in a financial situation dont have it as your main car and be stuck tfying to get to work ome day... Lol

What brand of parts u use? Personally only use OEM for timing belt n timing belt 60k service parts such as the tensioner as U said. Yes it can be expensive but U only have to do it once every 60k or 5 years or if ur not driving it much once every 8 years or so depending on ur situation. U can get OEM kit from dealer Cherry Hill Kia Mitsubishi with all the OEM parts for a lil over 300 bucks not bad..then have a reliable mechanic install it right. Also as long as U keep up with ur oil changes n basic maintenance even if the tensioner fucks up n blown engine due to timing U can still get a decent engine for a lil under or a lil over 1 grand.....(using ur old engine as a trade in core) main thing if ur turbos if those get blown they can cost U more than the engine. Like to know what brand tensioner U used...USE only OEM! thanks

@@mikethompson11 Well theres 2 thinks the lever that controls the blinkers is the end knob turned where the dash lights are on? Also on the dash between the door and wheel is a wheel which should go up and down for dimness otherwise theres an issue with aftermarket stereos causing issues with lighting

So I've heard if I connect the illumination wire from the back of the radio to the power antenna wire ( the blue one ) that should fix the problem is that right?
