I had a 1991 Mitsubishi GTO (Japanese Import) and it sucked! Too much tech that had all gone wrong, leaks everywhere, terrible corrosion, very tricky access to service/repair and ultimately I had to sell it as a parts car as was a money pit. It looked great and the pop-up headlamps still worked at least.

they werent any better in the late 90s and 00s. mine in 01 was absolute dogshit. the wiring, that joke of a glass transmission, the worlds weakest brakes, the rust, and having to change the back plugs got me to sell it and never regret it.

R34 GTR, series 6 RX7, GTO. I still hold hope one day there's a redriven review of a certain mid engined V6 Honda sportscar. That Honda is perhaps the most special of all 90s Japanese cars.

These never got the love they deserved compared to the others as you mentioned, but unfortunately were also known to be quite delicate. Some things owners did and will always look out for: transmissions on all variants had weak points, even the dull 4-speed auto. The 6G72, both turbo and NA, was known to spin bearings very easily due to oil starvation, so owners always keep an eye on oil pressure and levels. One VERY important thing to note, the oil pan pickup is on the lowest part of the engine and unprotected, so it is very susceptible to denting, leading to oil starvation and spun bearings. These cars also sit very low (mine measured at 41" tall) so bumps and scrapes on uneven roads are very common. Exterior plastics fade from gray to white, red paint was single stage and fades to pink, dash vents are the first things to crack on the interior, gray carpet can fade to green. Also one thing missed in the video, these went through 3 facelifts after the initial 90-93 pop-up headlight run. '94 saw bumper and side skirt changes, and projector headlights, '97 saw new bumpers and spoiler, and '99 was a different animal with the new front end and combat wing. Certain features like AWS and active aero were also dropped during these facelifts.

Mine was a twin turbo, with enlarged turbos and a boost controller, five speed, with around 520 HP. That thing was ridiculously fast, 0-100 km / h in about four seconds. Active aero was busted, and the door seal didn't seal properly. It also has no room to work on the engine, as the packaging is extremely tight. Unless it's a VR-4 and a manual, not worth buying; low km VR-4, unmodified specimens are highly collectible, and extremely rare and hard to find.

It's a shame you didn't have a manual to test, I remember the gearbox being pretty great. My GTO was a Japanese import otherwise it would have been named the 3000GT here in the UK. Everything on the interior was awesome but the ECU popped twice in 6 months so I got rid of it, that and changing the spark plugs meant removing the entire top of the engine to get to the rear 3 plugs, that annoyed me beyond words. Mine was the gen 1, 4wd naturally aspirated. As mentioned in the video, taking the head off is quite common.
That said, it's the JDM car I would buy again over all the others, I just prefer the way it looks unless it's a red one, the paint really fades badly and looks f'ing awful.

No one calls a 3000gt a stealth in the US they call the dodge stealth the dodge stealth, your statement makes it sound like the 3000gt doesn’t exist in the states. Also all base models in the US are FWD the only AWD “base” modes are the Japanese ones.
The all wheel steering doesnt activate until above 50kmh so I don’t get how that helps you get into drive ways or reverse parking. It was included to assist in highway speed lane changes. Doesn’t really help the handling much at all. Hence why it was deleted from the MR models from factory and most people that race these get a delete kit.
Valve stem seals, the heads dont have to come off you can either make a tool yourself from some off cuts and a hook or you can buy the specialty tool that Mitsubishi made themselves to get the job done. You replace them with the valve stem seals from the 99 models and also replace the lifters from the same year model as they tend to tick. It is cheap so I don’t know what that mechanic is talking about. I did it on mine and 5000km later when I did get the heads redone as i was rebuilding the entire engine the machine shop had no issues with my heads they just got a nice clean. The issues with the heads is from when your pushing over 800whp they tend to bend under the high cylinder pressures but that’s fixed by a simple drill and weld on the tiny part of the heads that’s responsible for that issue due to the material being a bit thin near a water channel.
The ECUs you could get jester or the other flash ecu brand that’s a clone of the 98/99 ECU and were pretty cheap.
Transfer cases, the case material is an issue wether it’s steel or aluminium the real problem with the early models is the output shaft being 18 spline vs 24 for the late 92 models and up, the tcase braces generally help but to really have peace of mind you have to replace with an aftermarket billet case and convert it from 18 spline to 24 and with 300M output shaft. The 5 speed t cases might have a weaker case but the gears tend to last better. The 5 speed gearboxes are actually stronger than the 6 speeds so it’s a kinda pick you mode of death situation. Best driveline from factory was the late 92 to 93 model, 5 speed box 24 spline output shaft steel tcase housing. You don’t need carbon syncros…. Geez man they make factory repro syncros.
You guys keep talking about shitty mods, what is a shitty mod? Knock off rims from Tempe tyres ? Fake HKS bovs? Timing belt from temu?
Dollar for dollar they aren’t better than your R32s or supras, US supras come with bigger fuel systems as do R32s. Sure the R32s have ceramic turbine wheels which can be a bit of a gamble but at least you can just plug and play some garrets in there. Single turbo kits are cheap as chips for supras too. The GTO has a piss weak fuel system 360cc injectors and a barely functioning fuel pump, the standard turbos on most cars are just 9bs which are way smaller than both the R32 and supra. Mine was an aus delivered car which at least came with 13g turbos from factory so I could at least hit 400whp on those. And if you want to make decent power it’s a good chunk of money as the turbine housings are tiny so custom headers are a must to either vband or td05 or t25. None of the Japanese tuners make bolt on turbos for them like they did for evo/gtr/supra. If 500whp is enough for you though they aren’t too bad plenty of bolt on turbos can manage that.
Out of the gate the worst of the Japanese halo cars ? Debatable the MR version had a faster 1/4 mile time than both the supra and r32, I’d say the handling stock is probably somewhere in the middle of the supra and r32 gtr (I’ve owned all 3).
The whole rep they get that they are hard to work on is a bit weird, I didn’t find it any harder to work on than my r32 gtr. The difficulty I think is that 99% of mechanics had no idea and will just straight up charge you an arm and a leg to do anything on them from their reputation. The US is a bit better for them quite a few shops know them well but I don’t know if they are even still around these days. But in Sydney forget it, learn how to do it yourself or buy a gtr/evo instead.
You also missed one of the biggest issues with them which is the oil pumps/spun bearings from mechanics jacking up the car by the sump, make sure you check the sump for dents otherwise you’re up for a new engine. The timing belt isn’t any more of an issue than any other car…

Everyone was terrified of the complexity in the 90s and early 00s. And back then, the GTR and Supra were easier to modify. Even though the Supra wasn't the fire breathing animal that most are today back then.
The RX7 and 300ZX were better looking too.
It wasn't and isn't a bad car. It just had great competition in a crowded marketplace. And tbh, many Mitsi buyers probably figured the Evo was cheaper and faster and more practical.

Cool looking things but the reason I think they were mostly forgotten is because compared to its contemporaries it was pretty disappointing to drive, and all of the tech stuff just added weight without actually improving its performance.
ETA: I had admittedly made this comment before I got to the driving section. I will just say though Adam that yeah it's supposed to be a GT car but it's main competition was the 300ZX (to a lesser extent the GT-R, but realistically the GT-R was just a whole other ball game) and A80 Supra. The Supra was of course a bit more on the "sporty" side of GT but the 300ZX in particular was just a better all-rounder while doing it with half the electronic shit that the Mitsu had and, as a result, a much more reasonable pricetag.
I would totally love to get a Series III GTO though, even if only because it's like peak late-90s Japanese design.

Interesting never seen a cream headliner in a black interior car well at least not in the GTO’s here , absolute shame it’s a AT these in their 6 speed MT with boost are a pleasure to drive. Just as long as you have the the lock bar for the rear steering 😂 but I have to admin the interior has aged heaps verse other cars of the same age.

I had my twin turbo version reviewed a little while ago, owned for over 17 years now. Put the elbow grease in and they will keep going without issue, treat it like crap and... Well, big bills.
The transfer case in the early ones wasn't so much that it was like cheese, it's the shaft that drove it, being 18 spline (later models were 25) it had the tendency to sheer splines after much misuse or exaggerated dropping the clutch. If it's taken care of like mine, it's still going after 34 years. Although I'm not expecting miracles... I have a spare shaft ready to go if it ever does decide to give in. Also seeing though I was 21 when I got it, def put it through it's paces, and the case never broke. Still love the car.

Have to admit that I thought these would be more expensive to buy than they are when I saw the which car today's video was on.
Shame that shitty mods, dickhead former owners and parts availability are going against this forgotten gem as it'd probably be an ideal project car for someone that has the time and money to spend on it
The safety features overview kinda reminded me of GTA Vice City for some reason.
Brilliant job as always guys and as always keep up the good work and look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍
