The seats and interior is SOOO much nicer than any other 90's jap car. But it was also the most expensive. It was a GT car after all and not meant to be raced.
"Auto metal" refers to the ability to automatically adjust to the metal style tape reading. And I'm quite sure Mitsubishi knew what it meant. There are different types of cassette tapes and some cassette tape players would automatically adjust for the different types.
I also have a good tape recorder and have been collecting blank cassettes. Thinking of releasing some minimal techno live sets on cassette. They'll be rare things.
This is an example of the biggest problem I have with Doug. Lazy research. Whenever he encounters something in a car that he doesn't understand, he makes something up rather than find out the actual answer. It is a disservice to his audience as he feeds them false information. For example, in his 2020 Subaru Outback review, he pointed out the subaru logo shaped automatic approach lights in the side mirrors and said they have no purpose other than to look cool and show off the logo. That was just patently false. He literally did the review at a Subaru dealership and could have asked someone and they would have told him that they're lights that automatically turn on when you approach the car to illuminate the door handle and area around the front door, but instead he just invented something and played it off as fact. He does this way too much for my taste.
I chuckle a bit since Mitsubishi is STILL using those pictograms & fonts on their CURRENT vehicles. I recognize them since my old man has a 2019 Outlander PHEV.
Auto metal on the tape deck means the tape deck was supposed to automatically detect the formulation of the tape (chrome, metal, etc...) and adjust the deck accordingly because different tape formulations require different playback equalization.
Type I is ferric oxide Type II is chromium dioxide Type III is ferric chrome Type IV is metal Premum cassette players could automatically detect the formulation and adjust the equalizer automatically. The earlier models of the player had a button or knob to change the setting according to the formulation.
@@pixieflitwit1516, I’ve never rode in a Supra, but my friend has one with 800hp (I would love to experience that lol) but my dad has a 94 vr4. Despite is being almost 4000lbs, it handles really well. The 4 wheel steering really works around turns, and there is no body roll, since it is a low car. It prolly handles better than a Supra, and since it has awd, it is quicker than a STOCK Supra.
It seems like he doesn't want to. In an interview with another car person who had had one stated it was slow and somewhat "eh", maybe that's why Doug hasn't reviewed it. It's weird. Maybe he'll pop out with a review of one soon. Hope he does
I think you can find it on his channel. It's him and another car person and they discuss 90s JDM cars. And the asshole said his experience of owing a Z32 was "meh" and Doug looked surprised. Bottom line he's got to do it at some point. It's the original one. Even though the ones that came after (VR4, Supra) were faster in a straight line the Z still won all the competitions.
I’ve always been a Mitsubishi fanboy. The Galant, 3000gt, eclipse and Evo’s are the best 90’s models of any JDM car in my opinion. I’m biased because a mate had one but the Evo 5 is the best looking Evo and Mitsubishi as a whole
These ran extremely impressive numbers stock. I had a stock 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and a stock 1991 Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo (5 speed manual) at the same time the VR-4 was much faster in a straight line, from a dead stop to 150ish speedo indicated the VR-4 had the Z easily beat by a couple car lengths or so depending on the launch. At the quarter mile the Mitsubishi will run with an older Audi S5 or C5 Vette, I ran a 13.51@102.47mph my first time out. After learning how to drive it I actually ran pretty consistent 13.3-13.4@102-104mph. In comparison my 300ZX Twin-Turbo ran 13.8-14.0@101-103mph.
The 3000 is more of what i would call a awesome touring car ! These are actually made for what i would call top speed driving and superb handling. The only time i rode in one my buddy and i did some high speed stuff in the Az desert and that car was amazing and felt so absolutely stable. I have never got to ride or drive a 300zx yet although it is my dream car.
What a fun car to drive. My brother had the Dodge Stealth AWD twin turbo version and it was a blast to drive. It would bury you in the seat when those turbos kicked in.

I remember every boy in high school drooled when the school guidance counselor would pull up in her white 3000GT. It was so gorgeous, but the funny part is that she drove it with a doughnut wheel for at least 1 entire school year. This was after the car was cancelled and we all thought what she did everyday was simply criminal.
Man. Your school guide counselor * (*CMIIW) really kick ass. She has a whole different taste of her car. 3000GT is totally underrated compared to Skyline GTR R34 or Supra jza80
@@kikyanwar1903 I think her ex husband must have bought the car for her and the doughnut was either spite or supreme ignorance. She ended up having an affair with the Naval Science instructor at some point
@@KevinVagen Damn that's a hell of a story! Was it a twin turbo model? I had a 96 VR4, they're fast in a straight line but not great in tight corners and apexes. I ran a 13.47@103.89 stock (drop in filter if you count that) - I had a 1991 Nissan 300ZX TT some years ago, and ran a best of 13.81@103.81mph. You can feel the difference between the acceleration in the VR4 and Z, the Mitsu just gets to high speeds faster. From a roll on the highway the Z can hang for a bit, but from a dig/low speed roll it's over. I miss both of those damn cars 🙄
@@oldschoolninamain9138 I recall it being very base model. I think they even had a detuned trim later on. ... Regarding twistys, I still have not driven a better canyon carver than my 2002 WRX wagon with 17s, super stickys, and a stiff rear bar. I ran stock springs and simple GR-2 struts. I used to drive to see my grandmother when she was sick outside Platsburgh from the North Shore in Massachusetts. Man, I got that thing filthy on those vermont dirt roads.
@@KevinVagen Damn I'm jealous!!!! I love those cars. Never owned one, only driven them. Even stock those cars handle like an AWD Lotus, I couldn't imagine how impressive they are modded. The WRX is such a great platform. Fast but plenty of utility especially with the wagon which is imo the coolest one. I have a thing for wagons. Yours is the bug eye gen if I'm correct, which is my favorite era of WRX. Something about the styling and the way they pull. I test done a 2017 WRX STI sedan and it didn't feel as quick as the bug eye gens despite putting down faster numbers. Hold onto that car, those are hard to find!
I bought a 1994 while working in Saudi Arabia. Had the car just over a year when I took a vacation to Japan and took a tour of the Mitsu plant. Talked to the Rallye Art (the racing division of Mitsu) people about the VR4 and what plans they had to race the 3000. They said they had developed an engine and tranny for it but the upper echelon had decided against "factory" racing but would "help" individuals who wanted to race. My "guide" took me into a room where they had 4 3000's in their factory racing colors that they were going to dismantle. I asked if they would consider selling one to me but the answer was a resounding NO". Then the guide made an intercom call with someone and told me they had 12 engine/tranny combos that were to be used for spares and that they would consider selling those for a price that was as much as what I paid for the car. When I learned the engines produced 980 BHP and the tranny was an 8 speed, I didn't think twice and bought one with the condition that they send a Rallye Art mechanic to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to install the engine/tranny. I paid for all shipping and hotel accommodations and two weeks later I had the ONLY Rallye Art 3000GT VR4 in the world that was not at the factory collecting dust. The car was very capable of speeds over 230 mph as I had it over that on several occasions. Unfortunately the car did not accompany me back to the states as a very wealthy Saudi offered me 2.5 times what I had invested in it. It's probably a million dollar car today.
Man, I absolutely love this story. Jesus, those engine tranny combos you spoke of would be the Holy Grail for Mitsubishi fanboys. I have, as I am sure you do, a list of cars that I could cry for selling.
I bought a 94 VR-4 new. Drove is for 24 years. Put 220k miles on it. Best damned car I ever owned. Waaaaay ahead of its time and still looked good when I sold it. Shame on Mitsu for falling in the SUV hole.
Mine never 'broke' once. I was never stranded once. I didn't abuse the car. I took care of the car. Something anyone should do. I drove it everyday in all kinds of weather. The car was considered unreliable only because of the IDIOT behind the wheel.
Hate to say it but you got pretty lucky. Amazing cars, and I miss mine, but reliability was NEVER a strong suit for the 3000gt. AWS issues, oil pickup issues, bearing issues, leaks, etc. A quick search online will detail just how bad they can get. Not to mention the placement of some parts was just absolutely atrocious, and made working on them a nightmare.
the supra and rx7s are still desireable. The other cars, not so much. When was the last time you went to a car meet and saw a ridiculously tuned 3000gt or 300zx?
Watching this makes me realize how big of a 90s car person I am. It's when I fell in love with cars and starting working on them. *Every* 'quirk' in this video seems very sensible to me and makes me want the car. I would blast Third Eye Blind on a cool fall night with no regrets.
Well, in Doug's defense, maybe the Mitsubishi Corporation is currently run exclusively by children. It would certainly explain some of the their current cars. 😉
For all the young kids that are clueless about listening to music on tapes should watch Techmoan's video about them. ua-cam.com/video/jVoSQP2yUYA/v-deo.html
I wonder about Doug sometimes. He doesn't seem to recognize a lot of these features that are, admittedly, outdated should still be recognizable to someone who does this for a living. Not sure how old he is but he doesn't look young enough to have missed the cassette days.
You forgot to mention the active aerodynamics and the heated side mirrors. I've owned 2 VR-4's, they're definitely a nightmare mechanically because the enginebay is so compact and hard to work with. A timing belt job is like a 12hr affair. But the engine can handle power and a simple downpipe exhaust upgrade and an external boost control turns that engine into 375hp easy. Want more? The stock b9 turbos are the size of hairdryers. 15g turbos and larger fuel injectors and pump and you're looking at 550hp all day. I worked at a performance shop that specialized in these cars, they have potential.
It's also worth noting that the 4 wheel steering changes dependent on speed. At low speed the rears turn opposite of the front, high speed they copy the front causing a strafe.
Not on this car, this car's AWS only operates in phase with the front at speed. There are some vehicles that do have opposite phase AWS at low speed, but this isn't one of them. And he didn't mention the AA, but he is reviewing a 99 which doesn't have it, in reality he should have reviewed an earlier year vr4, as they lost features through their years of production. They also had electronically controlled suspension and active exhaust, as well as the aforementioned AA, in earlier years, earlier HVAC units had more detailed screens with blue indicating cold and the arrows were animated in direction of flow, and it wasn't just HVAC either, it was actual climate control, which I don't think Doug mentioned.
_"AUTO METAL"_ This means the cassette deck can automatically select the proper tape bias setting to optimally play metal formulation cassette tapes. How that works is simple: metal bias cassettes have a pair of holes close to the center of the spine and hi-bias cassettes have a pair of holes located next to the pair of record protection tabs. There are switches over those holes in an auto-bias sensing cassette deck.
There were benefits, particularly a higher frequency response, with hi-bias (CrO2, Chrome) and metal bias tapes. However, those benefits were only realized when you used them in decks that could work with them and if you were playing them back in a good hi-fi system. They were also more expensive than normal bias tapes, especially metal bias tape. And Memorex was fairly lousy stuff, especially compared to Maxell and TDK.
A few years ago there was a guy in my city that had a vr4 and he was slowly swapping the exterior body parts with carbon fiber. And it started to look epic
Idk man, rating the Vr4 a 6/10 is almost insulting... these cars ran with the Supra. I think the rating was a little harsh, and under appreciated maybe.?
The Dougscore is a rating that compares the car to all of the other cars he's ever reviewed. He doesn't factor in things like age of the vehicle and how it compared to competition at the time, the Dougscore compares every vehicle to each other head-to-head, so considering that the VR4 got a 6/10 compared to all of the modern cars he's reviewed is actually a really good rating for a 20 y/o vehicle.
I just spoke with Joel, the salesman! He’s a pastor now. Says he remembers the car like it was yesterday, it was his demo car. He sold it to a man in Mt. Gilead Ohio. How cool! My favorite UA-camr, reviewing one of my favorite cars, that was sold and driven not far from my house. Small world!
I personally would go for middle trim Dodge Stealth RT/3000GT SL myself nothing that can break, transmission has no issues and it sounds great.(plus less weight)
Dude, if an RX7 is a 10 in styling, this is a 9. You didn't even get close to the limits. And 4.8 seconds for something this heavy and with just 320 HP, is insanely quick.
And not understand what "radio interference" means. He just randomly guesses that the loud noise of the motorcycle ruins a pleasant driver, when it CLEARLY says in the book about electronic interference...
Doug, the coolfactor is 10/10. Ever played Gran Turismo 1? This was one of the best cars to modify, I remember it being the best bang for buck and tunable cheaply into a monster.
Pop up headlights were made uncool by the laws that say you have to have your low beams on during daylight. So basically the popups never pop down when you're driving the car. But they could be made cool again, by adding DRLs to the car that is separate from the pop up headlights.
Had a vr4 while in the service, I'll never forget the feeling of those turbos kicking in on a country road along the coast. The car was like a horse, meant to run fast and felt like riding on air when you got there. Front and rear spoilers kicking in around 70mph, touch button suspension (tour, sport mode), amazing vehicle. Had a Cobra and S60R too, each had their perks. The NA 32v v8 with IRS loved high revs on twisty roads, the occasional power glide through an intersection was fun, beat a similar year STI at 162mph on Highway 16 near tacoma, he was pissed cause I caught him from behind. The S60R just brutally destroyed nearly everything stock in its power band, the VR4 had a smooth, powerful acceleration while the S60R made you grab the wheel with both hands. Loved each of those cars, also had an old 92 Honda Accord EX that came with its own comfortable perks, looked nice, never gave complaints getting to 140mph interstate driving. Take a chance on these old cars, you'll appreciate what you get and how balanced they were for their time. New cars may have power but they don't have that something special these older cars did.
I agree man, great observations. But I cant believe a 92 Accord would get to 140! Thats amazing. My 2013 V6 EX-L Accord Coupe cuts power at 125, but you can tell it would make it to 150 at least. Its still pulling pretty good at 125. There's a video on YT of my exact car with the limiter removed and just a minor ECU tune (KTuner) doing over 160. Those Hondas are fun and Ive always loved the clean look of the 90-93 Accords and Legends. Remind me of the 01 era 740i. Another great looking sedan. Among the best looking IMHO. I never got to drive a 3000GT but I remember in high school (99-03) someone had one and had it all modded and nitrous etc and would do 4 wheel powerslide burnouts in the parking lot, etc, he claimed it was a sub 11 second quarter mile but I dunno about all that lol. These things have really appreciated as people start to appreciate them more!
@@MattH-wg7ou No shit, the 92 accord ex I had was clean, well maintained, got to 140mph, it sounded nice at higher rpms getting there but the suspension couldn't handle the constant high speed so I'd hit the 140 then back off. No sustained runs at 140, took a few seconds to get there but definitely did it. The accord was quiet inside but at 140 you could hear the wind resistence against the aerodynamics (milk carton). I was surprised.
Right that is so true ! Especially these old Japanese cars are just so awesome and the fit and finish always seems so good to me always worth fixing up if they are not rusted out ! I just helped a fella the other day with a old 94 accord that needed a new clutch 385k and runs like a absolute top with no smoke on start up! I also had a 94 mine was a auto but i really loved that car so nice
The "Metal" on the radio/cassette was saying it could handle Chromium Dioxide cassette tapes which required a much harder head because the metal chromium would scratch a normal head for iron oxide tapes. Chromium Dioxide tapes had much better frequency range.
I think that's not exactly true. You're talking about "chrome" tapes which are also known as type II, but "metal" tapes are type IV. Type I and type II tapes can be played without any special setting but type IV tapes require a user to change playback/record setting of player to metal tape. This player apparently did it automatically by recognizing a type of an inserted tape.
I've never heard about special tape heads for chrome tapes but that's not even relevant. Because the label "auto metal" is about type IV cassette not about type II which is what you're describing. As I said before: Type II = Chrome = what you're describing Type IV = Metal = type of tape which needs a special setting of a player to be played (a switch or a button typically labeled "metal") The label on this player says "auto metal" not "auto chrome", therefor it's about type IV tapes and not type II as you said.
Couple of things. This car was known, even at the time, as a 3.0 liter grand tourer hence the name 3000GT.Big. Fast. Comfortable. It didn't have the pure sports car feel of an RX-7 but when it came to comfort, road noise and soft touch materials it blew away the likes of the Supra and 300ZX at the time. The added weight was always going to be a problem but it was a grand tourer anyway. Also, up until 1996 the 3000GT was known as the car for big guys. When they ditched the mechanical sunroof for an electrical unit in '97, the cabin lost some headroom and that is the reason your head kept hitting the headliner. Back in the day I remember the guys over 6 feet who had turbo's all say it was the only one they could fit in. These cars had a transverse mounted V6 which made it a bitch to work on and didn't help the exhaust not any. The Supra and Skyline were the inlines 6's which make for better sounding motors by and large due to their natural balance. At highway speeds against other cars with the same power level, the 3000GT had its work cut out for it to overcome the extra weight and drivetrain loss of the four wheel drive. But from light to light, all of that weight and 4wd made this thing untouchable. With the tach pegged at 4.5K and a fast clutch slip, the rear end would squat super hard and dig in deep. Roll racing, it could hold its own but from a standstill, they only ways you were losing was if you bogged on the launch.
With regards to how it feels when cornering: I always felt that it was way more provocative of going fast than other sports cars, it taunts you to go faster. My dad has one with a full exhaust and intake and the sounds is pretty great. I always found that you had to regard the car as more of a grand tourer than a sports car. As a tuner car it has heaps of potential but as a stock car it is more like fast and comfortable. I love the tan over red colour.
Had one of these back in 1993. Loved that car! Mine had the active aero option, that would adjust the pitch of the wing. My girlfriend at the time loved to press the switch non stop. I finally had to tell her to stop before she broke it. Loved the all wheel steer. Fast and handled awesomely. It was my upgrade from an upgrade. Shelby GLHS to a Dodge Conquest TSI and then the Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4! How I miss the 80’s and 90’s turbo cars!
I haven’t seen a GLHS in at least 10 years, other than at the Shelby museum. God damn, they were ALWAYS the funnest sleeper to drive. It seemed like no one could ever guess how fast they were, even the people that knew what it was. It was as if they couldn’t believe they were fast simply because it was an Omni.
My 91 stealth tt was my favorite car to this day. I had one of the "official pace car" models, along with being a wonderful touring car, it had questions asked about it everywhere I went. I loved the older people that would basically run up to me and ask me about it. Mine had 32k when I got it and I sold it with 68k. I'll have another someday, low cost of ownership compared to the feeling you get driving one. Thanks for reviewing this car Doug but the earlier generations had many more quirks, mine even had suspension and exhaust switches from normal modes to "race" modes. The first gen had all the goodies Mitsubishi could throw into a vehicle! So much fun.
FM diversity is essentially stating that the radio uses a series of antennae to achieve the best possible signal. The car has not only the power mast antenna, but a smaller antenna integrated into the rear glass. The head unit can then decide which antenna is best to be used on the fly. This was particularly common in Japanese vehicles from the 80’s-90’s.
FM Diversity means the car has two antennas, for better reception. There's the stalk, and an antenna in the windshield. The radio switches to the antenna that has the best reception. Metal was for metal-oxide tapes, which required different tape bias.
Doug acts like he was born in 2000, for some reason, and does very little research for any car, consistently. You're complaining into the void, unfortunately.
Auto refers to auto search between songs as well as automatically switching of the sides of the cassette to play. I'm truly disappointed that something as simple as this wasn't researched.
In the 80's, cassette tapes had the standard tape with ferric oxide and there was also a "metal" tape. The auto metal meant the player recognized the difference and automatically switched between the two.
You sure it wasn't a special EQ setting optimized for listening to Heavy Metal music? (ironically enough, metal composition tapes tended to have less ability to reproduce bass than ferric oxides :-)
+ daniel z At the time it was faster than just about everything with a 13.5 sec in the quarter at 108mph. Also did a 4.6sec to 60mph with AWD. Yeah, that was quicker than the 911 turbo in 1991.
Watching you climb in and out of that rear seat gave me flashbacks of my childhood. My mom had a black SL model with tan interior ~2002-2003. The VR4 is my dream car. That click of the passenger seat sliding back, the little holes around the seat buckle hostler, the cramped bucket seats.. ahh sweet memories...
It's sad to see the 3000GT/GTO be forgotten compared to the Supra, Skyline, RX7, NSX and such. I still have the memories of this car from Gran Turismo.
@Doug DeMuro Re: 8:52 "Auto Metal" - back in the cassette days, there were "metal" tapes that were higher quality, but required some (normally manual) adjustments to the playback system. "Auto Metal" then allowed you to use a Metal cassette without manually adjusting the setting. As for FM Diversity, no sure, but it COULD be related to different countries having different FM increments. In the US, FM frequencies are odd-number decimals (88.5, 93.1, etc.) but in other countries they are even or even go into the second decimal digit (88.55), so this stereo could allow for use in many different locations without replacement.
Really interesting to see the differences of this compared to my JDM Galant VR4 of the same year. I'm surprised they didn't go with the same full tilt fake carbon fiber all over the dash! Different market tastes I suppose.
Maker's Muse: The Eclipse and 3000GT/Chrysler,etc. versions were built off the same Platform as your Galant....you can quite literally put a Stealth/3000 dash in your sedan quite easily.....and all the other performance/interior gimmicks and features.
Maker's Muse: With some Sheet-Metal and welding ability....one could quite easily graft the front-clip of a Stealth,Eclipse,3000 to Galant Sedan....by simply blending the edge of the front door (of a donor 3000,etc.) and graft it on the Galant's forward section of the doors. Underneath the 3000s exterior sheet-metal....are the backbones of a Galant Sedan FWD Platform....which many Mitsubishi vehicles from that era were based on. Dodge sold shitloads of the Stealth 145hp 2valve Base versions back then (same engine as Chrysler minivan,MItsubishi Montero,etc.).They were everywhere on the West Coast
One of Doug’s best reviews. Less gimmicky, critical but not hyper critical; shows his thorough knowledge, and not talking way too fast. Love the older videos as they were decent length. I like the days pre “THIS.” Great video.

Yes the Grand National GNX 276 hp (5.7 sec. 0-60) and the 1970s GSX 360 hp (5.5 sec. 0-60) were quickest of that time (older, but Buick was not building good cars in the "90s")... Christopher Adams ... You might want to read the OP comment again... NOTHING in there about what car it was, just that AWD and 200+ HP could beat 99% of cars in the 90s. While 99% is an exaggeration. I would say 9 out of 10 times, so more like 90% of the cars on the road in the 90s would loose to a car like the ones I mentioned above and the one in this video. Considering most American v8s were doing 200+ hp but weighted far more then cars like the Mitsubishi EVO, or the Toyota Supra... PLUS those Japanese cars could handle going around corners.

Heard you laugh when you said you don’t know what ‘Metal” meant on the stereo system,The”Metal’ means that the tape deck can use ‘Metal Cassettes’ since cassettes comes in normal,Crome and top for the line Metal,it lets you know your tape deck won’t get damage if you use High Metal Cassette tapes, lol now you know ,Ricky Ranking from Brooklyn NY, Keep up the good works, would like a review of the Plymouth Prowler if possible please.
Agreed, I absolutely loved mine but it was just electrical issue after motor issue after suspension issue, eventually sold it for $25k and the guy I sold it to did a complete overhaul and re-sold it for $80k.
I must not have already commented here. I had a '91 VR-4 followed by a '95. The '91 had adjustable suspension and remarkably neutral handling in a unique Fuji Blue. The '95 with more HP and a 6 speed, was faster but no adjustable suspension, it had some understeer but still good handling. Note I recall the turbo coming on at 2500 RPMs and not much lag for the day, although more than today's best. When equipped with a sunroof like your review car, it did loose 1" headroom but it was enough for me at 5'11" I really enjoyed the 8 years with both.
My 1984 Nissan 300zx 2+2 has Electric Windows and awesome T-Tops, although it doesn't have an Aux port. Also came with microfiber seats that are oh so comfy.
OK DOUGLAS.....black dashes go right back to 60-70s muscle cars....even in a 70 Chevelle if you had a white interior....you had a black dash or dash-pad.....the reason is....its non reflective on the windshield....I hope this helps you...I love your Channel....we all keep learning.
Yeah man! am a 90's kid and in those days we ALL wanted a 3000gt!!! just like an eclise spyder, those were our heroes when it came to cars! If you loved cars you knew all the specs from those cars, mustang, honda civic hatchback, camaro, supra, eclipse, 3000gt, skyline among others! Boy we loved those cars!!! You brought back mems!!
I remember in 1999 at about 3am, I was on my ZX-6r on the highway in St. Pete, FL... Doing about 100 MPH... when a modified 3000GT passed by me like I was standing still... I matched his speed of 150ish... Until the guy exited the highway... We stopped off at a gas station and had a wonderful chat about his awesome "99" 3000GT VR4... Damn thing was a beast, had just over 480 HP to the wheels with the mods the guy had done to it.
I knew all the specs and trims back en 2002 I think.. saw lots of 1G's around that time then I saw the first 2G, a 1995 VR4 pearl white (It wasn't the 93-94 w29 white) and that was it, jaw dropping , greatest car that existed (for me), all the technology was just mind blowing..
It was to expensive for the American market. All of this tech to make it faster around the corner was useless, all the american market want is 0-60 or 1/4 mile. That why they are comparing this car to corvette, they are fast in straight line, but the c4 en c5 are nowhere near of this car in technologie.
I have 2.. 94 SL 5spd, 92 VR4 5spd I love both of them. Obviously the AWD VR4 is a lot of fun too drive, but the SL FWD actually is a lot of fun also. I highly recommend these cars. Regardless of what douuuggg says...😠😠
Doug - look over the high-end Maxell (for example) blank cassette tapes used to record CDs and some other forms of audio back when. 'Metal' was a premium quality feature of blank cassettes - most likely beginning in the 1980s or before - that offered a slightly improved fidelity recording over conventional materials used in the construction those blank tapes that allowed for 'mix tapes' or reproduction of compact discs if you did not have a head unit with CD or wanted some other flexibility from your media (i.e., did not want to lug around so many CDs on a trip or around town to sit in your vehicle and get stolen) when they sometimes retailed for $18 in late 80s money. Metal was a special setting that the deck needed to select to accommodate when the 'Audio Enthusiast' storage choice of Metal Cassette tapes were used to give the best sound. The 20th Cent. version of HD sound as it were.
Much like the 80's and early 90's Camaros, the dashboards were only available in black no matter what the other interior colour options were. This was due to the large size dash being located directly under a large, raked back windshield. Engineers found that any colour other than black caused a tremendous reflection of the dash in the windshield on sunny days. This was a safety issue as not only was this annoying, but it proved difficult to see the road as well.
Doug, "AUTO METAL" meant that the Tape player automatically recognizes ‘metal’ tapes. Way back then you could purchase ‘metal’ particle or metal treated tapes that had a much more rich sound the caveats were that 1. You needed a tape player that had the ability to play the metal tapes AND 2. You should NEVER use metal playing mode on a standard tape, it would ruin your tapes. So an Auto Metal tape player automatically sensed the tape type, w/o your forgetting to hit the metal mode off to avoid ruining standard tapes. Re: Mitsubishi’s turbo, you didn’t mention that it had a graduated turbo which was actually very cool. Normal turbos kicked in at about 5,000 rpm as you mentioned and gave you a kick in the bum to redline. Mitsubishi’s turbo kicked in partially early on, then ramped up as you increased RPM’s, giving you more thrust at lower rev’s, earlier, without lagging the engine and did so much more smoothly. All Wheel Steering, You mentioned this, but didn’t mention that at low speeds it turned AGAINST or opposite the front to decrease your turning radius. At high speeds the rear turned WITH the front (8°) to keep your vehicles track straighter. For example as you swerved around a slower moving car, quickly changing lanes, you kind of went sideways greatly reducing normal vehicles tendency to fishtail. You mentioned riding on rails as you cornered Not sure if that one had the original tires, but if so, or they bought the same, they were $2,000 to replace and were unique. The sides were like an upside down V. For ex: rim at top, pavement at bottom a normal tire looks like this; (___). The 3000 GT VR4’s looked like this; /____\, putting more rubber on the pavement. You also might note the 3000GT VR4 has one of the most interestingly worded warnings then a recall ever. It roughly went like this: "Warning! Potential for transmission failure. When the vehicle is being pushed to it’s designed limits, when it is being exercised to its maximum potential, during periods of extremely high stress and speeds, the transmission may seize." Think about that. You’re going down your favorite twisting mountain road, engine screaming, shifting it’s AWD 320 HP twin turbocharged engine and transmission wildly, taking the corners at high speed, breaking into the curves, accelerating out of the curves, engine screaming... and the transmission locks up. All 4 wheels lock as your transmission seizes. Not making this shit up. 😳
Yes but from what I recall, even when using metal tape and hitting the metal button accordingly, it made the sound crappy and killed highs. Kinda like Dolby NR.
Steve J. - Well... yeah... maybe? You needed to record on a ‘metal’ capable deck, use a ‘metal’ tape, and play back on a player with the metal capable player. It was true that if you recorded or played back a metal tape on a deck that did not support it... your results sucked. However, from what I remember the sound was richer sounding. I used to record my ‘albums’ to tape to play in my Mitsubishi Diamanté which also had the "auto metal" words on it. It seemed to (me) enhance the base as well as the treble. I liked the difference, but I’ve never been much of an audiophile. 🤓
Claudio Il Texano - Unfortunately, you are mistaken. Correct that the later spiders and the standard two of the three lower levels of the 3000 GT’s did NOT have four wheel steering. However, the VR4 had twin turbos and DID have four wheel steering that would turn like 6° or whatever against the the turning direction at slower speeds, and at 50+ with the steering direction. It was a selling point that I clearly remember. I may be wrong about this year model because the trunk air deflector on this 1999 was stationary. The model I looked at the air deflector moved automatically up and angled to add a little downward air pressure for stability. Motor trend magazine did a test that showed the rear air deflector actually decreased the air speed. I ended up buying a 2001 Galant VR4, because the insurance for a 3000 GT VR4 was like 2000 something every six months. The 3000 got also had a skateboard like ride IMHO. Anyway, YES. The top of the line model DID indeed have 4 wheel steering. LOL! 😎
Seriously Acceleration 6/10. 4.8 seconds was insanely fast for 99. And even for today's standards that's damn good, and also look at what this car competed against. Plus look at all the Tech it had to offer, and how much it influenced. Then saying its No Ferrari or Lamborghini or even a new sports car, thats comparing apples to steak. I understand its subjective, but having a car that was as groundbreaking and fast as a Vr4 was and going "meh" is almost disrespectful to extents.
It's based on new cars not old cared for the standard. Tho would be nice if he took the age of the car and the performance for the time in to.consideration

auto metal on the cassette deck refers to automatic detection of metal oxide tapes I assume. The tape coating was less hissy and better dynamic range and was more expensive. But it required usually a metal on/off button to adjust deck electronics to benefit from this. So having that detect automatically is just .. cooler. no button needed.
@SICEM_Rex - Go read my reply to you. IDK why you have it out for the VR4. Are you a 300ZX TT owner or something? Sorry the VR-4 was the faster car. Also, the mk4 Supra TT was overrated as shit. Not impressive in stock form until 100mph, the VR-4 had much more useable power.
SICEM_Rex nope. Underrated. It never gets any love and is always overlooked....until today. Great job to Doug for getting his hands on this prime example. This is the ultimate VR4
It's not underrated by anyone that was around in the 90s. It was known on the street and stip for being faster than the ZTT and RX7 TT in every way stock for stock. The 300ZX TT was dog slow stock.
I am, for sure, unquestionably one of those 90s kids who loved the race and I think the 90's era was one of the best performance races of all time. The Supra, the RX-7, the 3000GT, the 300ZX... oh man... maybe it was a good time to be alive, maybe it was good memories, maybe it was just me. I also have driven every one of those cars in their stock form. I feel so lucky.
If you were 12 in 1998 that would make you 32 today. That's probably the youngest you can be and still know the answer to this question without being an aficionado of cassette tapes. That being said, when did it become cool for people to seem young and ignorant?
yep, and for awhile the tape players had manual switches to alter sound reproduction to adapt to whichever tape type you were playing, so "auto metal" is a feature that eliminates the need for that switch. as for "FM diversity," that presumably means that it is using a "diversity antenna" which is designed to improve sound quality by receiving the signal through multiple independent channels
im old enough to remember record town and tape world at the malls..i tried to explain CD to my 12 year old nephew and cd player was a big deal in a car when I got my first car..
In like 2002-3ish, me and my brother looked at a 96 VR4 Spyder(Hard Top Convertible from California with 7k miles on it. Guy wanted like 30k for it, but my brother couldnt get the loan, that is they wouldnt loan enough money for the car. Im sure thats beyond a steal now. It was in great shape. We spotted it before it had even been put on sale. It was in Chicago Ridge, IL by the mall there, as we spotted it on our way to the mall. I also remember seeing a Pearl Pale Yellow Stealth R/T(not sure but I think it was an R/T) at a local dealer around the same time, and it looked great in that color, and Im not a big fan of yellow. Always loved these cars. It was the best car in the first Gran Turismo. I think I had a 1992 Used GTO with the stage IV turbo upgrade.

"Auto metal" refers to the ability to automatically adjust to the metal style tape reading. And I'm quite sure Mitsubishi knew what it meant.
There are different types of cassette tapes and some cassette tape players would automatically adjust for the different types.

I really enjoy when Doug talks about pages in the owner's manual.

Auto metal on the tape deck means the tape deck was supposed to automatically detect the formulation of the tape (chrome, metal, etc...) and adjust the deck accordingly because different tape formulations require different playback equalization.
That's is wat i wanted to tell him u are correct
@@gtxracing1 I was going tell him but then you both beat me too it. dam-it

Yep. Metal tape shells have another little hole in the top to tell the deck it's a metal tape. That's metal formula, not content. \m/
Type I is ferric oxide
Type II is chromium dioxide
Type III is ferric chrome
Type IV is metal
Premum cassette players could automatically detect the formulation and adjust the equalizer automatically. The earlier models of the player had a button or knob to change the setting according to the formulation.
The Japanese Highway Patrol used these in the 90's, stripped out with roll gauges and tuned by HKS, really cool and VERY fast.

Jack Phillips they were unreliable because of consumer reports and many online forms will tell you so as well.
Hate to say it but you got pretty lucky. Amazing cars, and I miss mine, but reliability was NEVER a strong suit for the 3000gt. AWS issues, oil pickup issues, bearing issues, leaks, etc. A quick search online will detail just how bad they can get. I wonder about Doug sometimes. He doesn't seem to recognize a lot of these features that are, admittedly, outdated should still be recognizable to someone who does this for a living. Not sure how old he is but he doesn't look young enough to have missed the cassette days.

@@spacemanrick2014 Yeah, but it's a little odd that Doug didn't.
Just found a 93 vr4 on craigslist for 1400, 250k miles likely will need a rebuild. Worth it?

_"AUTO METAL"_
This means the cassette deck can automatically select the proper tape bias setting to optimally play metal formulation cassette tapes.
How that works is simple: metal bias cassettes have a pair of holes close to the center of the spine and hi-bias cassettes have a pair of holes located next to the pair of record protection tabs. There are switches over those holes in an auto-bias sensing cassette deck.
was thinking the same thing when he said that.
And Memorex was fairly lousy stuff, especially compared to Maxell and TDK.
auto reverse too presumably.
Well put. I bet you own a vintage cassette player deck.
Stock for stock my 92 VR4 would win against a supra in a straight line, or around a track. Same fate for a 300zx.
This whole video was trash

Well it is being scored by an idiot

Pop up headlights were made uncool by the laws that say you have to have your low beams on during daylight. So basically the popups never pop down when you're driving the car.
But they could be made cool again, by adding DRLs to the car that is separate from the pop up headlights.
pedestrian safety laws were the main reason. pop up headlights cause more injury when striking passengers

Amdlo The chromium dioxide tapes would damage/cause excessive wear on the regular heads and special hardened heads were required for these tapes.
ua-cam.com/video/jVoSQP2yUYA/v-deo.html
I've never heard about special tape heads for chrome tapes but that's not even relevant. Because the label "auto metal" is about type IV cassette not about type II which is what you're describing. As I said before:
Type II = Chrome = what you're describing
Type IV = Metal = type of tape which needs a special setting of a player to be played (a switch or a button typically labeled "metal")
The label on this player says "auto metal" not "auto chrome", therefor it's about type IV tapes and not type II as you said.
Y'all don't get that he baits you into leaving comment$????
Nailed it
The 300zx and supra both had soft touch materials on the interior. In fact Ive own both a 3000gt and 3000zx and they are virtually identical
Styling 6/10 WTF!!?? this car is gorgeous!

Had a VR4. Totally agree about it being gorgeous. Better looking than the Supra and Nissan 300ZX. Classic looks will be beautiful 20 years from now.
Yeah, it was definitely intended to be more of a grand tourer than a sports car. It's right there in the name, after all.

God damn, they were ALWAYS the funnest sleeper to drive. It seemed like no one could ever guess how fast they were, even the people that knew what it was. It was as if they couldn’t believe they were fast simply because it was an Omni.
I loved the AWS All wheel steering on the VR-4.

5) Toyota Supra - 320 hp
6) Subaru WRX STI - 240 hp (4.7 sec. 0-60)

DJ Statyk A VR-4 , in this condition and this year model?
God what a clean car. That car is gonna be worth a fortune
Was thinking that too, guy has babied it. Wonder if he is the original owner, a lot of care has went into it for sure.
SPN 1 More likely as long as it's incredibly well maintained since it's the genuine '99 model and not a Gen 1 or Gen 2.
The seat bolsters adjust electronically in the earlier models and they hug you really nicely :)
This year models are pricey already just like thr spyder verions which in my opinion meh looking this year are my favorite !!
It's still a 90s car. Babying a turd doesn't make it valuable.
I remember these as a kid of the 1990s, with the other Japanese supercars. My top 3 favorite was this, the Toyota Supra and the Nissan 300zx.
Fastest car in Grand turismo 1, once you suped it up.
900++ hp!

I CAME HERE TO TYPE THIS!!!

This is the coolest car I've ever driven. One of the only 1991 cars to come stock with an aux cord port and electric windows. Incredibly comfy and fun
I think it was a DSM thing cause my 1g eclipse had an aux input as well
It also apparently came with a 6-disk CD changer
My 1989 Galant has an AUX port and electric windows+sunroof
My 1984 Nissan 300zx 2+2 has Electric Windows and awesome T-Tops, although it doesn't have an Aux port. Also came with microfiber seats that are oh so comfy.
Doug is the type of guy to dress better for a Mitsubishi video than a Rolls Royce video.
Matt P real car guy donsen't like a car because the price
Matt LOL😃
I still want a 3000GT
Get u one bro.
@@lonestar199
I wish man. One day.
It was to expensive for the American market. All of this tech to make it faster around the corner was useless, all the american market want is 0-60 or 1/4 mile.
That why they are comparing this car to corvette, they are fast in straight line, but the c4 en c5 are nowhere near of this car in technologie.
Don’t we all? Lol
I have 2..
94 SL 5spd,
92 VR4 5spd
I love both of them. Obviously the AWD VR4 is a lot of fun too drive, but the SL FWD actually is a lot of fun also. I highly recommend these cars. Regardless of what douuuggg says...😠😠
Your frequent uploads spoil me Doug
Sheldon Gunby same bro
whatcha mean nigga, it keeps me away from Pornhub for a while which is GOOD!
Best car in early gran turismo
no.. this car sucks, its fast but every time i break it's weird.
hj hfj , about as weird as how you spell brake
yep, won lot of races with it!!!
Gran Turismo 1 on PS1. Early game career buy the 3000GT and after full mods it was a 900+ HP beast.
Memories
Yeah it was.
A tan dash would have been ugly anyway
The interior is surprisingly amazing for it's time, there are Japanese and Korean cars who aren't that good in 2018 .... I am impressed.
Still an awesome car. And the thinking behind the thick leather seats was in its name "GT" Grand Touring...
LOL! 😎
Claudio Il Texano - My bad, misread your comment, the Dodge Stealth may not have had AWD. Sorry.
I kinda wondered WTH he was thinking with that rating, that's crazy fast for 1999, that's V8 corvette fast.
It's based on new cars not old cared for the standard. Tho would be nice if he took the age of the car and the performance for the time in to.consideration
Yeah, this guy is clueless
@@russelldaniels1797 His acceleration rankings are based on an absolute scale, are you an idiot?

LANCER EVOLUTION....?!
Henny Blanco they made the evo in the nineties, and it rocked!
And now they make the Evo as a FUCCKING SUV!
H1R1M1N1 you mean the Eclipse. Not the Evo.
auto metal on the cassette deck refers to automatic detection of metal oxide tapes I assume. The tape coating was less hissy and better dynamic range and was more expensive. But it required usually a metal on/off button to adjust deck electronics to benefit from this. So having that detect automatically is just .. cooler. no button needed.
I actually like the black over tan interiors.
Most underrated Japanese sports car of the 90s
No, not really underrated. Just 'rated.'
It's definitely one of the most forgotten 90s car. In my town I only know of 3 3000gts and there all base. I see a 3000gt once every month honesty.
Yes, those were the days.
Auto metal on the radio means, the radio plays by default metal.
"One of the coolest sports cars of the 90s" yet you only gave it 6s in weekend category... It deserves a better score imo.
Doug the kind of guy that reads the owners manual before driving
Back in the day there were Metal tapes for higher audio fidelity . Maxell had them as well as cheaper manufacturers.
I remember TDK cassettes lol
working shlub , Feel Old Yet?, Should I ask about your collection of mix tapes and video game arcade tokens?
