That's some pretty fast sawing,, I never heard my daddy say how many they done in a day but im sure it was a lot slower back then, He got out of the sawmill business not long after i was born and that was 67 years ago, A lot has changed since then.
Yes sir alot has changed since then..Men back then worked lots harder than we do now I wonder if the sawmill was steam powered? I no some around here was steam powered years ago
@@burntchurch He started out with a International 6 cyl gas diesel engine Start on gas and switch over to diesel, The last year's he ran one was with a 353 Detroit.

Thank you got a pin on SE Iowa for you..Do you see many big deer in your part of Iowa?
is that a coil to the debarker? they sometimes have diode or thick wire to controlvoltage to keep coil from overheating. feel the coil after use. what u charge to square some 10" cedar? ED
Its great to see the case loader still running does the railroad still use timber on the rails
Yes sir they still use them under the track I heard that they tried using other things but nothing worked as good as wood
@@burntchurch Here in Ireland there using concrete one's the wooden ones were starting to rot quicker that's another loss for the sawmills here in Carlow we had a Braun factory and Braun left Carlow and went back to Germany a few years back because Germany had finished paying for WW2 and a good few German companys went back they nearly crashed there econamy but the Braun factory was closed over 6 years now a company Nua it's called are making timber frame homes they clame to make a timber frame house every 90 minutes
Another thing with just two of you working is that you're not spring chicken either. You've got to slow down.. I have my granddaddys 2 man saw and his broad axe 🪓. He used to cut the logs and take them down to the river with his mules. I remember him telling me how he to that axe and made the ties. After a while, he worked, laying track for the railroad. He died in the late 90s. Seems like yesterday. Enjoyed the video. Liked to see Guard Dog BoBo.
That was a great story really enjoyed hearing it thank you..Its hard to imagine how hard they worked back then Hewing them crossties with a axe would be a rough job
@burntchurch you know, he talked like it was just another day , in his life back then. Before he died, he was in a nursing home, and he'd be in the bed and go through the motion of hueing those logs. Explaining every motion to me. Wish I had listened more to every word he said.
The place they worked out of was Carters Wharf on the Rappahannock River, Richmond County, Virginia.. I went online just a couple of months ago and found alot of things about it.
That’s some fast cutting! Nice that you get every board out of the slab. Can you say how much a White Oak tie is worth- or is it one of those “ if I told you I’d have to k... you!😂🇺🇸
Around here they go for about $32-$35 a pcs
@burntchurch In Ohio, I have to pay .50bf for low-grade logs. Not much room for profit. The knots on the ties cannot be no more than 1/3 the size of the face. No knots in the rail bearing area. I can't find buyers for ties. Where do you sell your ties?
