VEGAN GINGER BEEF | Recipe by Mary's Test Kitchen

- This vegan ginger beef recipe uses tender homemade beefy beefless seitan, coated in a crispy fried batter, and dressed with sweet ginger beef sauce. It's super delicious and just as good, or better than Chinese take-out ginger beef (AKA ginger fried beef or deep fried shredded beef in chili sauce).
Scroll down for the recipe link.
Ginger beef is a Chinese Canadian invention. According to Wikipedia, it was developed for the local palate in the 1970's by chef George Wong at the Silver Inn in Calgary, Alberta. It's made from strips of beef, battered in a mixture of egg and cornstarch and deep fried before being covered in a very sweet and somewhat tangy sauce. It's on practically every Chinese take-out menu here in Calgary, even the vegetarian Chinese restaurant menus. By popular request, I developed this vegan ginger beef recipe for anyone and everyone who craves the taste and crunch of ginger beef without the meat and eggs.

Panda Express crispy beef my favorite looks just like it
I tried this recipe and it is so so so good 😋. My meat eater husband said: "This is better than meat" 💥. I made a lot of saitan in my life with different recipes, but this one is the best:
it is crispy, spicy, soft in the middle and not rubbery at all... perfect.
I have to thank you...You are the ONLY person I've seen that talks about that wheatie flavor in the VWG. Everyone else that cooks with it never mentions it and act as though they're good with it. And they may very well be. Me being a heavy meat eater, who loved meat so much, I didn't care if I didn't have sides to go with it, needed that taste to be gone or I was heading back to the butcher. Okay that was an overdramatic statement. Sorry. But I was tired of that taste of wheat. I had stumbled across your Channel a couple of months ago and heard you mention using apple cider vinegar to cut that aftertaste and I fell in love ever since LOL! So I'm thanking you for mentioning this as a solution. I'm not gluten intolerant so now I can eat as much as I want and make all these fabulous dishes and still love the taste.
You're most welcome! I noticed the same thing too. It led me to wonder if maybe there is a wheaty-tasting gene that some people have...like how some people say cilantro tastes like soap
That's a good theory! I always figured that the brand I bought was bad somehow...
I think you're onto something there. Science backs up the claim that some people are "super tasters", cilantro as you mentioned, as well as bell peppers and some other vegetables are usual culprits. I would not be surprised if wheat was included. I'm so glad you found a method that works to make your seitan palatable!!
Mary's Test Kitchen // Vegan Cooking I know right? My friend hates Cilantro. Well, you have helped me a lot. I was going to ask in another one of your video posts, would any kind of vinegar help, like the Balsamic, Malt, White, or even Red Wine Vinegar. So, I see Balsamic here, which answers that question 😊. I'm enjoying making your recipes. I have three UA-camrs I really follow close. I'm determined to stay meatless😊. Have a good day!
Yes, it’s so wheaty! The wheat taste takes me out of “hum meaty” into “nope bread”. I have noticed many people try to cover it with lots of spices but sometimes I really miss the comfort and nostalgia of roast beef with salt pepper and garlic.
Literally just made this! But with double freezed tofu instead of setain and coconut sugar instead of brown sugar. It is PERFECT! 💓 Thank you!
You're most welcome :-) I'm so happy! Thanks for sharing your experience
I have to use dates instead of sugar in all of my recipes. Allergic to sugar and eggs and dairy. My allergies are the reason why I’m Vegan now. Thanks for sharing your recipes.
...sorry you have those allergies, but I imagine you may be healthier than many because of it. I think it would be cool if you created a channel sharing recipes you enjoy.
I’m new at this how do I get the recipe
You're a genius and it's about time you get an international award.
just make this and it came out perfect!
woohoo!!! Awesome to hear! Thanks for sharing, Simone
Hi again!!! I made this and oh my gosh!!! It is Sooo good. I let my meat eaters taste it and they says it tastes really good. Thank you for yet another great recipe!
Woohoo! You got that done real quick :-) Nice to get the meat-eater opinion as well. Thanks so much for sharing
I've been a bit shy about trying to make seitan at home, but I finally decided to try your recipe, both for seitan and the sauce here and it's just so delicious! Thank you sooo much!
Yay!!! It's my favourite so I'm especially happy you tried this!
I made this tonight with smoked tofu. It was UNREAL, the ginger sauce was so, so, so, good. Thank you so much for sharing! Next up is your fried chicken!
Yay!!! That's awesome hun! Thanks for sharing:-)
Mary, I recommend your channel to everybody. I've tried several of your recipes so far with excellent results. This one is my favorite to date, and your tip for adding either balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar to the seitan to cut the wheat flavor is brilliant. I do that now for every seitan recipe I make, and it works in every instance. Thank you very much for providing such wonderful, tasty content to your viewers. Even my kids, who weren't all that enthusiastic about transitioning to a plant-based diet, love all of your recipes I've made thus far.
Wow your like a vegan kitchen witch with all those dish that you veganize. Everything i have seen so far from you always blow my mind. Thanks for all your great work.
hehe you're sweet :-) thank you!
OMG! Just made this for dinner and it's one of the best recipes EVER. I cannot believe how flavorful it is and how crispy it stays even after the sauce is added. This is an amazing recipe and I thank you for providing it! ♥️
Yay I'm so happy to hear this! Thanks so much for your comment
Thank you Mary!!! As a fellow southern AB girl now living in FMM, Mary's sweet voice and charm reminds me of home. Thank you for the amazing recipes and sharing them with us!!!
You are so welcome! It's always so a joy to here from a fellow Albertan! 🤗
Bless your existence Mary. I am blown away and super excited to try this! THANK YOU. 😍
haha you're so welcome!
Not vegan but this looks delicious! Your videos are so relaxing after a hectic day, thank you for what you do and may God bless you and your test kitchen !💛✝️
Your channel is changing my vegan life, thanks Mary you rock! 🙏
You're most welcome! Thanks so much for the support :-)
The moment I found that channel, my life changed. Thanks Mary a ton
I love how you tell us how to re heat the food. 🔥🔥
Wow i never knew marmite add meaty flavor. I gotta try this recipe soon coz i don’t like the smell & texture of beef but seitan is different. I’ll share this w/ my vegan friends if you don’t mind
please do share! thank you, Ima :-)
Thank you Mary - I made this today and it was amazing! It was my first seitan attempt. 😊 It turned out very crunchy and flavorful. A family member of mine, who never usually eats seitan, even had a second helping! Yum!!
Great job! I'm so proud of you :-) Thanks so much for sharing your experience
Also...I used the seitan recipe...crumbled it...used vegan sour cream and made " beef" stroganoff! So delicious!!
I absolutely love your recipes!! Off the top of my head your juicy seitan beefless burgers are amazing👌 I'm excited to give this recipe a whirl this weekend. Thanks for making vegan food exciting Mary! x
Did you know you can oven fry this? This coating is absolutely brilliant. I crisped it in the oven at 450 or 475 for 10-15 minutes per side and it was shockingly crispy and delicious. And it stays that way which is the most surprising thing. Well done!
I wish I could send a picture. Lol
Thanks so much for sharing your oven-frying experience! I'll have to make an updated video soon with that version
That would be soooo cool!!

Yay! Way to go! I'm so glad you enjoyed it - thanks for sharing
Woowww you are NO RULES queen 😁😍😍 love you
thank you so much
I made this with tofu and.......wow....I owe you my life‼️‼️‼️ thank you for ALWAYS delivering amazing recipes ❤️
+AnaBear101 Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed it with tofu! Thanks for sharing your experience
+Mary's Test Kitchen // Vegan Cooking
Does Balsamic vinegar really help nutralize the taste of seitan? I have been trying to find something that will take away that taste it has.
What kind of tofu did you use? I usually use medium firm for a meaty texture but I have some firm in my freezer too, so I'm not sure which one I would use.
Yay! Calgary ginger beef! 👍 you made this Calgarian very happy 😊
Hope you enjoy😊
Wow!...i am always floored with how easy your recipes are ❤ Thos looks super delish 😋
Thank you!! :-)
@@marystestkitchen You are the woman !
This looks awesome Mary and plus your commentary makes your videos extra great.
Thanks so much, Nico!
I would absolutely love to see your take on vegan bulgogi or even just Korean BBQ in general. Love your channel! #RecipeRequest
I'm glad that the vegans on here have been giving ideas on how to veganize meat dishes, for example, Yovana Mendoza has made vegan beef patties out of black beans which are cheap here in Australia (80 cents per can).
My local vegan restaurant (Vegan hut) offers a portobello mushroom burger for $12 AUD but I could stay at home & make the burgers that Yovana has made for less money.
McDonalds doesn't have a Vegan option over here apart from if you order a coffee with soy milk added.
Yes! Shout out Calgary is the mecca of ginger beef! The best one is on 11th av and they make it with tofu! Soooo good
Do you remember the name of the place? I'd love to go try it! Making v. ginger beef at home is great and all but sometimes you want to order in 🤗
#reciperequest salt and pepper tofu (with fried garlic). 😊 Thank you in advance if you make it and if not a restaurant in Denver will continue to get all my money 😁
This was delicious. I made the mistake and did not let the oil get hot enough. Some of the batter stuck and I had to pry the seiten pieces from the pan with a sparula, but once the oil heated up properly the rest of the batch was cake. Thank you so much!
whoops! I am so happy you figured it out! 🤗🤗🤗 now you hvae the POWER to make vegan ginger beef when you want. What a powerful power hehe
I had the meat version on vacation in Vancouver. it was so delicious. Now I'm vegan so it's great that you've created this.
THIS is one of "the" most AMAZING Vegan meat substitute recipes I have EVER seen : can't wait to try it! Thank You ...
Hope you enjoy
Unbelievably awesome Mary, thank you! I'm using soy curls tonight, can't wait.
Hope you enjoyed it!
Hello friends and not yet friends! This looks yummy!
Thanks, Lorraine!
I hope I make this soon! I have salivated over this recipe for years....
I hope you can too! It's incredible you will only wish you made it sooner. ❤️❤️❤️
This dish is simply perfect! I made it earlier this week, and I will make it again today! LOVED IT!
Mary, I made this for a dinner party tonight. I followed your directions to the letter, and it was a hit--- to the letter! This is an incredible recipe----absolutely delicious. This is my favorite seitan recipe now. I also learned something by using flax meal for the batter---It was so light and crispy. Thank you!
Greetings fellow Calgarian! I've watched 53 seconds of this video and already know I have to make it 😁
Hello!👋 you're going to love it I promise
This recipie is amazing! Made it, ate it all, looooved it!
"Don't think about what it looks like" LOL
This is so different from what I thought ginger beef was! To be fair, I've never eaten it myself (because I'm vegan, duh), but I've heard my family rave about it so much, that I decided to try to make my own version of it years ago. Background first: This ginger beef was eaten in Chinese street stalls in Malaysia, so it might never have had anything to do with Calgary ginger beef. Anyway, mine is also seitan, but not battered or deep fried. I boil it in strips and then fry them in a tiny bit of oil. The sauce is sort of similar, but instead of chili I use white pepper, and I add sesame oil. The most different part, besides the batter, is that there is no sugar in mine. Well maybe a tiny bit because I use part soy sauce and part ketjap manis. In any case, my family loves my recipe, but I still have no idea if it's anything similar to the one they're used to. Maybe I'll make them two batches (yours and mine) one day, and they can tell me which one is more like the one they're obsessed with. I don't frankly care anymore what the original is like, because I like mine a lot, and it's one of the few dishes I make that has no chili :D
North American Chinese food is often similar to traditional Chinese dishes except there's more deep-frying involved and sugar! Because we love deep fried sugary food, apparently ;-)
lol okay, that makes sense then! :D
This looks so scrumptious I can barely stand it!!!😲😲
Better just make it and get it over with hehe ;-)
@@marystestkitchen Yesss!
I've just made this today and it's amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe x
Yay!! That's wonderful news. Thank you so much for sharing
I just made this and I didn’t have chia powder I had chia seeds, guess what, it was amazing. It added even a crunchier texture lol sooo good
That's cool! Thanks for sharing your experience, Reina!

Did anyone else notice the vital wheat gluten was scowling? 😃 Looks delicious Mary. I can’t wait to try this. ❤️
It doesn't want to get eaten either? haha
Mary's Test Kitchen 😂👍
For a beefy seitan, I use shitake powder and coffee! Also black beans.
oh I've heard that's good!
My family loves this
I love to hear that! :-)
Ginger garlic beef invented in Calgary. Thank you Mary for this awesome recipe.

Thank you so much, dear
I've only eaten vegan once in my life and that was a vegan burger and it was amazing. You make this look soooo good! I'm gonna have to try this and not tell anyone it's vegan until after the rave reviews.
Hope you like it!
I made this and freaked out in the middle cause I didn’t have cornstarch but used tapioca flour instead. It’s soooo good
hehe I'm so happy you figured out a workaround!! And glad you enjoyed this dish --it's my actual favourite
I guess I need to write a list and buy a blender.. your videos look great 👍

You're most welcome! I hope you enjoy it :-)
Those look just like chicken fried steak fingers which are eaten in some parts of the country but not my part. They can be purchased by Tyson at Walmart so I have seen them and they look exactly the same. I can't wait to make this!
hmm that gives me some ideas! Thanks, Elizabeth :-) enjoy!

In the UK... We have crispy chilli beef... will have to try this out but with the Chinese style chilli sauce
I've heard of it! Similar, a little different. Have fun with it :-)
Looks as delectable as it is easy - will definitely try. Thanks Mary; you're the BEST! :D
Putting the red beans on to soak right now- I can’t wait to try out this recipe! (I made your Beefy Beefless Seitan for the first time a few days ago and turned it into something like carne asada- it was a total hit. I know my family will love this dish, too.)
Sweet!! Enjoy :-)
Looks amazing now I need to make this seitan with a Mongolian sauce. Been truly missing Mongolian Beed.
This would be perfect with Mongolian beef sauce too! The sauce itself is usually vegan anyway :-)
🤤 this looks soooo good!! I realized bulk barn sells wheat protein and I never noticed before. I think this shall be tried out this weekend! Thanks again for your amazingness Mary!
Yes!! Bulk barn is so awesome for that! Have fun with it :-)
I made this and this is the 💣 and it does keep the crunch when you reheat it in the microwave.
Made this for dinner tonight, it was fantastic.
I'm not Vegan myself, but I am open to it :D This looks delicious and your voice is so soothing, plus I just found this Channel and I love it!!
Thanks so much, Adam! Much appreciated :-)
Love your videos. Can't wait to try this one. Thanks
I'm gonna cut the sugar and ginger in half, but I'm still really looking forward to making this. Love your videos!!!!
Cool! It's still going to taste good with those changes :-) enjoy!
I wonder if this would work with sliced oyster mushrooms. Looks yummy
YES I bet it would be delicious too
I recommend the blue oyster (if you can find them) the mushrooms taste more like beef similarly to portabellas
This is seriously brilliant!!! Game changer....I'm so excited for this recipe. Tytytyty😸👏
You're most welcome :-)
This looks delicious! Thanks for sharing. I love your videos!
Thank you so much!
