Lyrics:
don't write cause I don't think
I don't have a need to speak
I don't see the bright side, quite as clear
Accolades and happy days
They don't ever last
Stories of courage clouded up with fear
In the broom grass I would lie
Glimmer in my eye, the sun smiled back on me
From Victory, I tried
To match eternal light with how I live my life
Of course, I was forced to retreat
From victory I accept defeat
Waxy green and yellow walls
Outside my window fall
Covering the light I thought I'd see
Am I sad or am I sick?
What's at the root of it?
Do I throw my hands and quit?
Something tells me no
In the broom grass I would lie
Glimmer in my eye, the sun smiled back on me
From victory, I tried
To match eternal light with how I live my life
Of course, I was forced to retreat
From victory I accept defeat
Worries on all sides of my mind
In silence, my darkness is denied
In the broom grass I would lie
Glimmer in my eye, the sun smiled back on me
From victory, I tried
To match eternal light with how I live my life
Of course, I was forced to retreat
From victory I accept defeat
From victory I accept defeat

I'm almost 67. Listened to a lot of Neil Young, Dylan, Bruce, Paul Simon, John Prine and others over the years . My college age kids introduced me to The Avetts about 15 years ago and what a blessing it's been. Guys like them, Jason Isabell, Billy Strings ... . .these young artists give me hope for the future
I got into them about a decade ago ( through Rolling Stone ). I'm 58. Avetts, Isbell and the band Dawes are my 3 go to's.
@Linda Pietrasz I don't think you know Avett fans. Have you ever been to a show? Because I'm 65 and I fit right in. 😊 I know Avett fans from 3 to 73.
@Linda Pietrasz I am 65. That's not a huge difference! And as I said, when I go to a show, I fit right in.
@Linda Pietrasz Aww. I'm sorry. I kinda "lured" a close friend in by strategically sending her videos I thought she'd like. She does like music, but I don't think she'd ever listened to anything past the Sixties. Ha! She went with me to my first few shows, but she doesn't go much anymore. And it took me six years, but I finally got my 36 year old daughter hooked! She resisted for a kong time. Her health isn't great so she can't make it to a lot of shows. But I am in a couple of fan groups, and I've met people from all over the country there, so now if I have to go alone, it doesn't really feel like I'm alone because I'm meeting up with friends before the show. A few have actually become close personal friends, even though they are in their forties and fifties, and we get together outside of concerts. Some are my age, but don't live close enough to get together regularly. If you're interested, friend me on Facebook, and I will send you an invitation to one of the groups I think you'd fit right into. I'll warn you though, we can be a little bit Avett-obsessed! Ha!
I'm Pam Snedegar Leslie on Facebook.
@@lincolnmaceachern2410 LOVE Isbell! I've recently gotten hooked on Mandolin Orange.
The Gleam of light we all need right now. Thank you ❤
The Avett Brothers are some of the best songwriters of my generation and that makes me proud. They remind me time and time again, glad to see the Gleams continue ❤
The song feels like a custom garment, tailor-made for me. It’s exactly the way I feel. Thank you for always putting into words the things many of us struggle to name.
Found this song off my music channel on cable , thank you ,,love so much , I want to lie in the Broom grass 🌀🌀🌀
I haven't listened to The Avett Brothers in a long time. Since then, I got myself into punk, and folk punk from there, and even figured out who I really am. It's kind of fitting that I would eventually be taken back to them. The Avett Brothers will always have a special place in my heart, and they have not disappointed. The Second Gleam was one of my favorite albums of theirs, and it looks like they're going back in that direction. All I can say is, always remember there's nothing worth sharing like the love that helped me find my true name.
I simply want to say "Thank You" for making your music , and sharing it with all of us !
Lovely. 💜 #TheAvettBrothers
One of the biggest reasons I love The Avett Brothers is that anytime someone tells me that music today is not as good as before, I just have to play them the Avett's and they take it back
I found The Avett Brothers around 2014. I dont know why it took me so long. My best friend John (brother) played a few tunes and I was instantly hooked. We saw them live in Greensboro NC on Halloween 2019 before the pandemic. It was a general admission show and we were three rows from the stage. They blew the roof off the arena. During a song break I yelled out I LOVE YOU TANIA. She just started laughing. But this band has given me faith in the future of music. Sadly my friend John committed suicide in August 2020. Now every time I hear a song by this band, I think of him. RIP JOHN GOODWIN. I LOVE AND MISS YOU BUDDY
You have to look for it to find it today. I first heard the Avetts' "Ain't No Man" on "Radio Margaritaville" a few years ago. Now I found this track.
Gentlemen I want you to know that I am over the moon at the fact that you all have brought out the "Gleam"! This is what I have been personally missing. Please continue to do what you do but all of these years are too much wait for another chapter in this series of awesome. Do what you can when you can to keep it coming and we all give our love to you! Keep the dream alive and continue doing what you do!
Beautiful… absolutely beautiful… I don’t think anyone could listen to this not cry

Such a beautiful song to a beautiful group can’t wait for the album to come out
In dark times a light gleams through.
Yessss, from the first couple notes I could tell I was going to love this.
I felt the same halfway through their intro to Blaze Foley's "Clay Pigeons" from the satellite radio studio.

real nice song,, but I wish the lyrics could be read easier..
Nicely done, gentlemen. --Vets for Trump 2020
Well done! To be honest the political aspects on your previous album didn't appeal much to me. I understand the need to express oneself but at the same time I felt somewhat alienated from the music I had loved from you guys since the beginning. I live in rural NC, and spent my early life in Charlotte and Concord (Pine Grove Church rd😘.) I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've been missing the music that has always resonated with my soul from you guys. Thanks for this one!
Jessica Wright why did you feel alienated? The things they sang about shouldn’t alienate anyone, considering they were all true and needed to be said.
Jessica, I agree, the political songs seemed more like a sermon than a song, and I found it tiresome to be preached to from all sides, especially when I know most of it is designed not to help the downtrodden but to gain power. That is politics, it just is, it is full of hidden agenda, that is brutal truth. And I prefer my songs not to dwell there. I am glad to see the return of songs that touch the heart without seeming forced in any way.
@@jeffbrown8117 there are many things that are true and that need to be said, I personally don't like my music to have a political theme. If I want to hear about politics and people opinions of social policy I will watch/read the news. When I listen to music I'm looking to be away from polarizing thoughts, ideas and opinions. That's just me personally, everyone is entitled to feel how they feel, and that's just how I felt about the last album.
Jeff Brown Exactly. Anyone who harbors negative feelings toward “Closer Than Together” has no idea what these guys have been about since the beginning. It’s almost as if they listened to the songs but somehow never heard the music.
I'm a concealed carry holder and I don't conceal carry my fear. I pray no person ever feels they need to threaten my life or the life of another, but I don't wish to be a victim or watch someone else loose their life because there was no one there who could stop the CRIMINAL. If Bang, Bang isn't a political song I don't know what is.
