Lyrics:
A young child sits quiet, the forest is dark…possibilities overflow his unbroken heart
I ask him well after the brush takes the spark: what do you see in the fire?
I see light within color and color in light, trophies I’ll take home, and battles I’ll fight
A bright blue horizon with no pain in sight
I’ll be there and so will my parents and you’re invited too
A life-sentence inmate in orange prisoner clothes
Who’s been told his whole life ‘that’s just how it goes’
Who came out swinging from poverty row, sits a bit close to the dangerous glow
What do ya see in the fire?
I see rich people laughin’ with food on their plates,
And neighborhood bullies imprinted with hate
Moms and dads screaming at each other insane, and hard grey redemption a little too late
And I see myself as I might’ve been, I’m handsome and capable and funny
A young woman in college entranced by the flames is pondering silent how perfectly strange
A girl could be called by so many names and not one be the one she was given
What do you see in the fire?
I see myself in the mirror, not pretty enough, and digital images reducing love
my roommate enslaved by expectations above, and then I see the face of my mother
A first year preacher stands on his feet
His love for man kind is true and complete
While the frigid wind blows through the trees I ask, as he leans away from the heat
What do you see in the fire?
I see swirling confusion, question, and loss…and I know all about Christ and the cross
But I cannot explain the holocaust…I stuttered when a young man asked me to
I just couldn’t find the words…
A woman of ninety with wisdom in spades, her mind still as sharp as her kitchen blades…
I ask as her memory nonetheless fades:
What do you see in the fire?
I see the touch of my husband who recently passed
Our hometown before the roads got so fast
And I see it now in an impatient blur
And I see how in love we were…
I see the good Lord offering mercy,
I see the good Lord offering mercy
I see the good Lord
Someone I care for, she sits by my side…I can feel the past and the future collide
She leans in and whispers: “don't think just decide:
What do you see in the fire?”
I see the faces of my victims whose hearts I once broke, calm and alive in the curling smoke
All I can do is sit here and hope they may find a way to forgive me
There's something unspoken there in your eyes
A pain or a love I don't recognize
I better ask you now before it dies…
What do you see in the fire?

I feel blessed having parents that understand I would like to listen to this at a young age.
No hard feelings part 2 🖤
what do i see in the fire?
i see far away places, beautiful places, taking my time and me from where i ought to be, beauty put before what matters, god, family, and selflessness
In the song, the writer talks to: 1) a young child, 2) a prisoner serving a life sentence, 3) a female college student, 4) a first-year preacher, 5) a ninety-year-old woman, 6) someone "I care for" (his wife?)...and each time the singer shares their pain and confusion in a way that makes one feel compassion. Finally...we hear 7) the author's voice, asking for forgiveness from those he has hurt.
Wow. It took guts to even TRY to write this song, let alone put together one of the best I've listened to in my 50 years on this earth.
Agreed...nominee for Song of the Year.
Agreed
This song and it's lyrics brought me to tears....one of the best I've ever heard! The Avett's, Bob, and Joe truly know how to write and perform songs that end up in our hearts and souls! Just incredible....
I wondered if there would be any masterpieces on this album. This song is certainly one. A song of such wisdom, vulnerability, sadness, and faith. So beautiful...
What do I see in the fire?
I see the faces of my children, and how time grew them so fast. Did I spend enough time; did I hold them enough, toss them enough, tickle them enough; and even if I did, it was still never enough. Cause it all rushed and rushed past so fast.
That's what I see in the fire.
I sang your words in my head as I read them. How great would it be to have fans write their own verses and hear an updated version of this song with them included?
@@joshmulder8779 That would be crazy awesome, LOL. ... I wish, right?
Being in scouts we always end our camping trips looking into the fire and talking for hours and hours while thinking about life. This song captures that perfectly.
The old Avett Passion is back! So incredible!
It never went anywhere tho. Closer Than Together was just as passionate, just in a different way.
😍😍😍
Crying is my superpower. I'm here to help.
What do I see in the fire? I see the faces of those who've gone before me, their courage, persistence, and love for the gift of life. I see the need to live up to the virtues they've held dear, and I see how important it is for me to leave a legacy I can be proud of.
I can’t help but think that 3:50-3:56 is referring us to The Ballad of Love and Hate to help explain what the first year preacher couldn’t.
I see the good Lord offering mercy. Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Hair standing up on my arms
The guitar on these new songs is sooo good. I absolutely love.
I didn’t plan on crying at midnight. Thanks, Scott & Seth
Ughhh right?? Tore me up 💔
Cam T this is on repeat until I pass out 😭
Not at midnight, but tears flow.
This is me right now☠️😂
Me and my dad used to listen to these guys
These are all wonderful songs on this album. I've had a crash course in their music since covid. I'm about 20 years older than they are so I came to their music late. Their music has sustained me in the most beautiful ways
This is almost a part II to "No Hard Feelings." It is so beautiful.
They are my everything. Their lyrics speak to the deepest part of my soul. Grateful for their music.
Yes! Exactly the same for me! ♥
This is pure FIRE
what do you see in the fire?
i see the faces of my ex lovers who touched my heart once. even the shortest time spent, was enough to let them in.
Speechless...
"I see the good Lord offering mercy"
That just wrecked me... Repeating it 3x too. So amazing.
Woah yeah
I don’t know if the Avett brother’s read this.
I fucking love you guys!
Been a die hard fan since
“4 thieves gone”
Exposed me to true American freedom.
You guys are my hero’s!
I learned to play guitar almost 15 years ago to all your songs.
Swept away, shame, when I drink, the ballad of love and hate. And later the carpenter and feb 7
Simply amazing
Legend has it that Kevin is still waiting for his response.
Damn it guys.
I’m so happy
It feels like the roots.
Thank You Scott and Seth.
Beautiful song.
This song is amazing. Chills everytime I play it
That was so good
What a fantastic song this is! so moving and deep and... great songwriting. Thank you Avett Brothers
...it reminds me of sitting around a fire with loved ones...nothing being said...all staring into a fire...everybody in there own minds...but longing to know what the chambers of those hearts hold..."what do you see in the fire?"
“That’s just how it goes” - such a great line for 2020. Incredible song, best I’ve heard in a while.
I just can't stop listening to this song
Good title for these times... Keep on that, cuz I found you guys thanks to "fire" this week being the search.
Wonderful🤟🏼
What a song!
Wow.
Just listen to this whole album.
Sounds like u found yourselves again.
Or maybe I found myself...
Either way.
Love it.
Can’t wait to see you guys with Tyler Childers.
🇺🇸
This is incredibly profound.
💙 beautiful.
Wow!
Well done fellas, well done :)
this is amazing
Everything about this reminds me of an Alan Gregory Isakov song 💚
Reminds me a bit of ‘a hard rains a gonna fall’. chords remind me a bit of north country blues.
I was going to type the same thing. A man observes the world and all its sadness, confusion, and beauty. Hard Rain has always choked me up; this one does as well.
Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
