Just know the kingdom of God is within you, even though the battle is bound to continue!
Best line in the song, in my opinion.
First time I heard the song, I thought he said ''contend you''. Still sing it like that sometimes
You probably already know this, but "The Kingdom of God is within you" is a book by Leo Tolstoy, the man who wrote "War and Peace", I think this line is a reference to the book though it may just be a coincidence
@@kobiaslatham9478 it could also be a reference to Transcendentalism which believes that everyone has divinity in them.
"Is she not more than the curve of her hips?
Is she not more than the shine on her lips?
Does she not dream to sing and to live and to dance down her own path
Without being torn apart?
Does she not have a heart?"
Love this song.
Mariella Gutierrez that part always gets me too!
Mariella Gutierrez that part always gets me too!
So poignant, beautifully written. The whole song actually, but that verse stands above the rest as most relevant in today's world.
I think the beauty of the sounds are; it's written with sad lyrics to an upbeat tempo.. Genius
Me Too! This song Rocks!
"I've seen the program make men out of monsters."
Yes.
so great to hear on the radio today.
True for me, too
Someone's a friend of Bill W 🤗
This! 💯! Women too.
I can't tell if I'm laughing or crying because of how much I relate to this song.
I see some comments down there saying this song is just meeting "status quo".. But this is the first song I've ever heard by them and I think it's beautiful; the message is absolutely beautiful. Its nothing like the inane songs that you hear on mainstream radio. This song has real heart and I feel it. I love the stanza about Angela. it touched my heart, the emotion you can hear in his voice when he sings those lines about her. About how men sexualize women so much and forget that they are thinking and feeling human beings as well, they are also children of God. And just the message this song sends out about Christianity is so lovely, his developing relationship with God. it's so simple and yet there's so much more to it. I love it. Thank you for bringing me closer to God today, Avett Bros. It's easy to forget that He's there when times become rough.
Well put! Thank you.
I've been sunk in depression for a couple of weeks and when I heard "does she not have a heart" it lifted my spirit somehow. I'll miss you guys in Colorado for the first time in years, but I can live with that true sadness. Just keep singing to me.
just the line “no one is fine” is so powerful and true
musically, this didn't grab me
but lyrically, whoever wrote this had something to say.
and I really dig it. their poetry is a part of them that always has and still does grab me.
Chad Smiley I kind of see the music as a sad man hiding behind a happy tune.
I think it works well with the verses; practically melancholic.
Chad Smiley same
Topin absolutely. It's funny because usually lyrics are the last thing I care about, but when they're really well-written (think Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Elliott Smith) then they become that much more important.
The happy tune with sad lyrics is sort of a metaphor for how if you "peel off the layers you will find true sadness"
Agree. it's a simple tune that talks to people in recovery. I like it a lot. The great thing about this band is its like what you would do with the guys at home.
Similar to ‘Hey Ya’. Upbeat song with less than upbeat lyrics
Such beautiful lyrics
How often do we see grown men who understand depression and will openly call out the sexualization of women (as well as talk about gun violence, though in a different song)?
i thought that's all we do these days, but i might be wrong.
Great recovery song !
I was just thinking this! And I'm loving all the new music :)
Oh my goodness, yes.
yes " I've seen the program make men out of monsters"
"Even though the battle is bound to continue.."
My friend Angela committed suicide in November. All because some selfish men tore her spirit apart time and time again. All she ever wanted was to be loved and give love. She was the best friend I've ever had and deserved happiness more than anyone I know. This song really touches my 💚
this song helped me get through tough times this past year. THANKS BROTHERS!!
This album is going to be off of the freaking chain.
Totally agree
Yup!
Could it be? Yes...True Sadness makes me smile and gives me joy!
Something different but I love it. There isn't anything that I haven't absolutely loved that they have made...& the message they send in their songs and lyrics, always goes straight to my heart... If it didnt, i wouldnt have named my only son Avett :)
Working like crazy to stay married to the love of my life for 35 years: I must say that I need a song like this to help adjust my emotional balance. Indeed there is True Sadness, but there is also True Bliss. Now where is that turning point?
This makes me happy. 😊 ironic...love these guys.
Cant start a weekend better than with a new avett song. keep rocking
Rocking??? This would put you to sleep
It'd put you to sleep...if you have no attention span.
B absolutely loved his comment!
Another one from the Amazing Avett Brothers.
My favorite teacher showed this to our class he recently left and now every time I hear it I cry.
The lyrics of this song bring me to tears. So powerful.
I love the heart and soul of their music.
once again, to be growing up with this music, thru maniac emotions to slower thinking is cause for celebration. never take it for granted. lembas bread for your ears, reminding one of rivendell while stuck in heavy traffic under the blazing great eye. AH! Thank you.
I love everything about this song!, I can relate, Listen my friends, It is very moving!
This song can turn my day around completely every time. Whenever I'm not feeling into my recovery enough. Beautiful.
This is a really beautiful song, it's so true to life, and really sad because of that.
Dear God this is amazing, going to buy the album now. People on Itunes complaining about shit, saying this doesn't sound like the Avetts, ha! This is gold! Love you guys!
You guys were amazing at the Greek Theatre last week! Best concert I've ever been to. I could have listened to you guys perform all night.
This describes my year in 2016. Beautiful song, and beautiful lyrics, a great recovery song!!
I was having a bad day while sitting in research class, then saw that you released this gem- thank you!!!
This is as spiritual as any song they have done. "You're the real deal in a world of impostors, and I've seen the program make men out of monsters...stuff about Angela the porn star...does she not have a heart?, why can't I go on with this evil inside me, I step out the front door and feel it surround me. Just know the kingdom of God is within you even though the battle is bound to continue."
It's the battle that causes the true sadness.
I LOVE this song I always listen to it I'm happy it exists!
You were a friend to me when my wheels were off the track
I know you say there is no need, but I intend to pay you back
When my mind was turning loose and all my thoughts were turning black
You shined a light on me and I intend to pay you back
When I was a child, I depended on a bottle
Full-grown I've been known to lean on a bottle
But you're the real deal in a world of imposters
And I've seen the program make men out of monsters
'Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness
Adam and Eve must have really done a number
On that garden when the apple was finished
Leaving behind them a den made of sadness
A damage that can't or won't be replenished
'Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness
Angela became a target
As soon as her beauty was seen
By young men who try to reduce her down
To a scene on an X rated screen
Is she not more than the curve of her hips?
Is she not more than the shine on her lips?
Does she not dream to sing and to live and to dance down her own path
Without being torn apart?
Does she not have a heart?
I cannot go on with this evil inside me
I step out my front door and I feel it surround me
Just know the kingdom of God is within you
Even though the battle is bound to continue
'Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness
True sadness
True true sadness
Didn’t get that
Thank you
can't wait for this album
"depended on the bottle" good stuff brothers !
Man, this really hits me on an even more personal level tonight after what just happened
YES!!!!!!!!
This one has grown on me big time like all of them
It's about time!
People complaining about the "new sound" should get over it. Emotionalism was when this trend started and it was 9 years ago. NINE years !
Damn ❤
Can't wait for the album! Thanks for filling me with joy with every single song :)
I miss the time it was just a couple of dudes banging on their banjos and guitars, stomping on their kick drums. Evolution I suppose.
Before they were the Avett Brothers, they were Nemo, a really rowdy in your face punk rock band. I can't stand when people think they have to be a certain thing. They have grown and matured. Like any good band or artist. Bands that still try to play and sound like they did when they were kids, rarely work out. I love their old stuff so much. I love the raw intensity of it. But I also love the beauty of their music now. There is no wrong form of Avett
+BanjoBandit go to sleep go to sleep, my man.
+BanjoBandit Love it! "There is no wrong form of Avett" TRUTH!
Is this country or indie?
+Cookie Monster folk rock actually
thank you ! so happy 💆
Once out, this is as good as Damian Rice...Gold
Love this song...Love it.
Love you guys!
Thank you....God bless
this is played on SiriusXM radio all the time.

This is ironic, it's making me smile :)

Hace un año, Toronto, The loose Moose tap, pensando en ti.

This song seems to allows us come when I'm driving to pick up heroin to feed my addiction.. Always makes me cry.. My dealer always ask me if I'm ok
I hate this life
wow,I just heard this song two days,on my way to my connect...(same day,you posted).
splendida
love this.
#ODAAT
i love the shit out of this song and oh, i'm 55 years old.
Very nice
Been so excited for this!
Anyone who doesn't like this song is CRAZY
I have such mixed feelings about this...
It's a great song, recorded very well; but not in their tone. It's just them watered down.
Exactly. It's pretty good music, but the part of me that remembers Four Thieves Gone is recoiling. I don't know whether I'll be able to like it or not. XP
I would agree, but this doesn't sound like a continuation of their creative direction, it just sounds like they're settling for the status quo. I+L+You was a new creative direction that was pretty much perfectly executed on all counts, but this isn't anywhere near that level of quality, I'm sorry. I'm all for pushing boundaries, but this doesn't sound like it's pushing anything. I love the Avetts, and i have incredible respect for them, but i just don't like what they've been doing with the last couple of albums. It doesn't matter, of course, because at the end of the day it's their music and they can make it however the hell they want to. However, i am also under no obligation to like what they're making, so i'm not going to force myself to listen to something that doesn't sound interesting to me. I hope you understand where i'm coming from.
You have voiced all the thoughts in my head. While I LOVE them, I do not like Ain't No Man at all. This song is ok, but nothing special. This is status quo. I do like the live version of I Wish I Was, so I have some hope for a few Seth gems. Personally, I wish they would stop working with Rick Rubin. He has a bit of a reputation for complacency and homogenizing some artists from their distinct sound. Jake Bugg for one... I hope better is to come than we have heard.
+Zachary Bailey You're absolutely right. Artists need to grow, they need to explore. No one wants the same sound over and over. I don't want to, but hearing the potential in their new songs live and then listening to the studio version just; unfortunately, disappoints. I feel as if it comes down to that they just don't have that "LISTEN TO ME!!" drive. Along with Rick Rubin messing things up..
My theme song
By seeing the movie poster I truly believed this was a Grunge band
Good tunes. First like :D
I really like this song....but man this does not even compare to the live version
Is it me or is there some seeerious audio clipping going on on all these new tracks?
im here bc i heard this playing in target
they should change the name of the target store to satanic circumspect.
*satanic CIRCUMPUNCT.
(excuse me, please)
The target logo is a satanic circumpunct. fuck the freemasons.
Olive their mother lol. Perfect
damn drinking is a bitch. Right on yall
Yes it is, I'm recovering, and very , very thankful for recovery and this song is awesome.
"I've seen the program make men out of monsters"
Great song, but it feels like the album version lacks the same energy as their live versions. Still love it though.
+Billy Proffitt I love a lot of their songs live, but for me, this studio version is better than the live electric. But they really can't do any wrong, so doesn't really matter I guess :)
I've got that same feeling. I thought that about Ain't No Man and I've got the same feeling here. I wonder if I'd feel the same if I hadn't heard the live versions first lol.
This song sucks and I love the avert brothers were is the energy man
+Erica Bellamy some songs are about the energy but this song is about the lyrics.
+Garrett Hill Yeah, I completely agree. I was not entirely happy with this song when I first heard it. The music is a little overproduced and lacks the simple beauty that much of their old music has. Still after listening to this song several times, I can say firmly that I like it because the lyrics are absolutely masterful.
I thought this was a really shitty round or something until I realized I had the same song open on two different tabs lol whoops
Torchy’s Tacos brought me here
I hope they aren't changing they're music to something more poppy 😕
:/
i feel like seth is behind these new songs because he has a tendency toward being cheesy.
Rick Rubin ruined it.
TOo bad they wouldn't record with Ethan Johns
Johns would have ruined it, thank God for Rubin.
Hahaha bro I agree Rick rubins production is lame but the songs are too good to be ruined by that
great song until the breakdown. what a bunch of White Knight nonsense. pretty women have it soooooo hard
Am I missing something?
+dolphwong Because the objectification and "pornification" of women isn't a huge issue in our society. Right.
+300MediaProductions yes that's what beautiful women fear more than anything. they just hate when men show them attention and buy them things. you can tell by the way they dress that they don't want to be looked at at all.
+dolphwong you're approaching the issue from a top down (no pun intended) perspective. But this is a cause and effect issue: women are culturally viewed as objects of sex (music, porn, and entertainment should reveal that fact), therefore if a woman wants sexual attention she must present herself as a sexual object. It's a supply and demand mentality. Woman are objectified because we objectify them.
If women are sex objects then men are success objects. Either way this is an evolutionary outcome not some sort of societal brainwashing program
This is dreadful. Avett Brothers what happened?? I remember when your music was beautifully inspiring. Who are you trying to be?
+hannah garst Ok, I know exactly what you mean, but the album has not been released yet. They have released songs with a similar sound to this one before and people had the same reaction. I would argue that this song is still good because of the beautiful lyrics even if it lacks the band's traditional style.
hannah garst this song is a jam I love it sounds good to me dope drum beat dope ass bass line good lyrics good guitar rhythm
