My best friend passed away in 2021, we loved the avett brothers. I just wish I could sing along with him one more time, but tonight I'll sing loud enough for the both of us. R.i.p Brandon
I listen to this every day as background music/noise while me and my daughter play and do our daily routine. Can’t not smile listening to this recording of laundry room.
In October 2019 I met a man. We spent 3 years trying to make it work. It didn’t. But he introduced me to the Avett Brothers and I will always love him just for that. What a gift these guys are.
I swear Seth channels the divine when he plays. There is nothing greater than this band's music and their live performances. The world is better because of The Avett Brothers!
They reach your heart because your heart is not cold nor dead. If it was, you wouldn’t receive their music they way you do, it wouldn’t touch you the way it does. Just sayin’.
The Avett Brothers' music has changed my life! I know that's a huge statement to make, but they are the first band in a long time that actually has "spoken" to me. From, Mignonette to Emotionalism to Four Thieves Gone to I and Love and You. These guys speak from their hearts and you can really hear it in their music! I love The Avett Brothers!
They are amazingly gifted musicians. I have seen them perform live several times, and they are masters of their craft. Bravo. This Tiny Desk Concert never gets old. Sing on.. Avett Brothers!!!
When they were teenagers, the Avett Bros played gospel songs with their dad at my church in Sacramento, CA. They have family in Sacramento area and would perform at church when in town. My girlfriend, now wife, and I were at the first free concert on the west coast at Chicken Park in Fair Oaks, I've still got the signed poster, finger pics, and broken string from that concert. Avett bros were the soundtrack of my highschool and college days. It has been amazing to follow their career from the start and see how far they've come.
I've been listening to this video for about 4 years now. And I still find Laundry Room so impactful that it seems few songs can come close to it, I only wish it went on for longer. They really knocked it out of the park on this session!
I love they just kill that first song and as soon as they're done they act like they don't know where they are. You have to love someone that pours that much energy and love into something they do, but at the same time seem so genuinely humble about it.
Okay, so I am 71 years old, remember Frank Sinatra in the 1950s, Perry Como, Patti Paige, then was there when Elvis burst on the scene, then Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and then the Beatles, then Janis Joplin, etc, etc, etc. But I have to tell you, I haven't heard much better than what these guys are doing! This is just fine stuff. All three songs are great. This is music to my ears, for sure, with excellent music and excellent lyrics as a big bonus. Hope these guys are around for a long time.
I remember the first time I heard the Avett Brothers. I drove straight to my best friends work called him out to my car and informed him that I had fallen in love. To his surprise my new love affair was a band. This romance has only grown with each new albulm and every concert attended. The Avett Brothers will always hold a place in my heart and soul!
The artistry, the love, the kindness and a certain truthfulness is always so apparent in their lyrics and their music. "No Hard Feelings" will hopefully be played at any service I might have. They broached the subject that we all have to confront in our own way, in a masterful way.
My son ended his life 10/12/21 to free himself of a lifetime struggle with drugs. He was 34. I came across this band tonight and listened to No hard feelings and I cried my eyes out. It made me remember he’s at peace with no hard feelings for anyone who let him down in any way and that I have some hard feelings towards my ex that I need to let go of. Their music is the best thing I’ve come across in a long time.
+HippieLady420 This is my favorite performance as well! It's not as technically perfect as the Cardinal sessions, but the emotion here is so raw and beautiful. When Seth starts harmonizing I get goosebumps.
Man, that was awesome! I’m an older guy, 63… These guys remind me of a fantastic band from the Ozarks, that I used to go to the concert cause I was from St. Louis… They remind me of : The Ozark Mountain Daredevils… so full of feeling, and such beautiful technique!
I have contributed exactly 10k of these views. Remember watching this video in college and always come back. If any of my friends haven't heard of The Avett Brothers before, I put this on, just to give them a taste. I'll never stop returning to this tiny desk concert as a comfort.
I like to come back here every month or so just to see Scott playing that guitar tucked under his arm without a strap on Bella Donna. Five years later he's still the coolest man around.
I love everything about this band. Luscious harmonies, improvisational instrument work, soaring melodies and the rockin outro to Laundry Room. COVID watching in Hawaii 9/6/20 😷🤙🏼
You can stop with the Covid nonsense, clown. When did you start listening to them, right before you posted that nonsense? They've been around for years and years.
I remember the first time I heard this sound booming from somewhere in the belly of Rowe Arts at UNCC.... enchanting as it was... I was actually breathless and respectful when during a fortunate midnight break from the computer lab I was standing in the lobby at just the right position to see these guys emerging, all unassuming, from a fluorescent lit side hallway.... I was in shock to realize they had been making those sounds. You ever see a couple and it’s so easy for them, it’s so natural, and they just are?... you feel happy they found each other.... It was like that when I saw the guys for that moment in the hallway... I just stared. We all nodded a hello. And I knew I had just witnessed something special.
All these comments about tuning. One thing that makes the Avetts special is that they don't care about being perfect, they don't want to be perfect. They want to be sincere, sing songs from the heart with honesty and real emotion that their audience can connect with. It takes a special kind of musician to be able to pull that off, but the Avetts do it better than anyone. All their mistakes show how human they are. They don't want to pretend to be better than anyone else.
They are amazing live. I always recommend their shows because they just have a whole vibe and feeling to them and they play and sing so beautifully. I've been a fan for years and will always love them!
Anytime I listen to the Laundry Room studio version I sing this version instead. Incredible how many harmonies these guys layer their songs with. True musicians
I say their best version, maybe not technically, but there is a live version from a concert in 2011. Scott should be acknowledged for the way he plays the banjo, always, but in that performance in particular
Watching in 2022, seen a dozens shows, but the chemistry between Scott and Seth still makes me tear. They’re just so good at making each other better musically.
Witnessed these guys with only about 120 others at the Rancho Nicaso in 2006, and again in a tiny music hall in San Francisco in 2007. Really special. It was apparent that they were on the forefront of something really different, redefining neo-American music for the 21st century. I personally think Laundry Room is one of their all-time greatest songs....for so many reasons!
Once they play and their voices rain over the audience...I didnt even notice that an instrument was out of tune. The nature of their music sits at the very human center of emotions and imperfections...and it makes them so compelling. Anyone that wants to obsess about the tunings....should go to an orchestra performance.
One for the ages - an NPR Tiny Desk Masterpiece - you will not find the Avett Brothers in this form anywhere else - raw - harmonizing - tuning in tune - Outstanding!
I have loved this band since I found their track "if it's the beaches" which is one of my favorites! .... in me opinion, they are (a tad gritty, a smidge rough) both good qualities!, & create true honest wonderful music! Keep it up guys!!
Honest... For me their music transcends and has the ability to take me on little trips... The lyrics, a rift, the mood of a song somehow helps to clarify some of my most beautiful memories. Usually while working with and surrounded by grounded realists doing what they can to either better themselves, the things that surround them, or do what they can to learn the truth of the past so they can do what they can to avoid it in the future or help one wronged by it. Typically in and under those circumstances, i.e. active war zones, extreme poverty, refugee camps, and/or even being around extreme excess and suddenly realizing you are helping to perpetuate it in some way... its in those moments I've found make the best time to escape and run as fast as you can and surround yourself with beauty and silence of our environment offer.s I need to escape to remain sane and effective and it is finding those extremes... beauty in the midst of the ugliness of the human condition that makes it so much more moving.. That music takes me to the Cacapon in the mountains of W.VA, or cooking over a fire using a spit made out of locally found twigs on the bank of the Neretva in Mostar, BiH, the peacefulness of the winding Snake River in that huge valley looking up at the Tetons in Wyoming. The music reminds me I am nothing and everything at the same time, I or we have learned so much and come so far in the past thirty or forty years in our understanding of each other and the universe. We have CERN and I have spent time in Nations that have set the perfect example for the rest of us to follow.... Do yourself a favor and stay in that utopia as long as you can don't turn on the TV as you will quickly be reminded of how far we have to go. Thanks Avett Brothers for reminding me of the beauty in the human spirit that has held on through the darkest of times.
Awesome comment! The music opens windows in my soul. Like there is not only hope but messengers with heart and vision are here to unburden us of all that takes the beauty, newness, and joy away from the beautiful life in front of us.
Saw a live show in SF,Ca. in October; Simply Magical! Not to be missed! Four of us in our group, None of us knew the Avett Bros.(came for the opener, excellent, also!) Will see again, don't know how many instrument strings these artists broke during show, someone would hand them another, and they kept on going . . . Wow!!
Okay so, I was on this random "UA-cam Video Watching Marathon" and somehow found myself watching this channel... I'm gonna be here a while. So awesome!!
Today I discovered the Avett brothers, life just got a bit sweeter. I'm a city girl from the midwest that lives in Asia and am married a hick from sticks. Feeling like I just found my roots? Weird, and charming or something. I and thanking JC for youtube right about now.
"Laundry Room" Don't push me out, Just a little longer Stall your mother, Disregard your father's words. Close the laundry door, Tiptoe across the floor Keep your clothes on, I got all that I can take Teach me how to use The love that people say you made Stop your parents' car I just saw a shooting star We can wish upon it But we wont share the wish we made But I cant keep no secrets, I wish that you would always stay Last night I dreamt the whole night long I woke with a head full of songs I spent the whole day I wrote 'em down, but its a shame Tonight I'll burn the lyrics, 'Cause every chorus was your name Break this tired old routine And this time don't make me leave I am a breathing time machine, I'll take you all for a ride
There's a version they play with the lyrics changed to 'stop your sisters car' that I now include when I play this song. It always reminds me of the girls I had a a crush on that crushed right back when I was a teen in Northern Ontario.
I don't understand. I know who Mandela is but why the Mandela effect. Too me the song captures a place and time I experience and instead of parents driving us around we had our own cars. I was driving at 13 not because I was a a delinquent but we just figured it out.
Young Avett Bros. is my favorite Avett Bros. Elder, wiser, and married Avett Bros. still write well thought lyrics and all. I just really relate with the Avett Bros. of young when they were out there breaking hearts, being overly romantic and learning the hard way from they their mistakes only a young man could make. I went through my teens and early 20's with the Avett from years ago. Still go back and learn things about my self from their songs.
I know what you mean. Such energy, and passion. I loop the audio from this youtube when I'm on road trips or flying. I also think this short video is the best Avett Bro's album.
Just listened to this "concert" again, and now I am thinking these guys are the best lyricists out there right now. Their music is also fine quality. I expect to hear these guys a lot more across the country. Just great stuff. Thanks NPR, for this excellent programming.
This was amazing. I had forgotten a bit about The Avett Brothers. Became a big fan many years ago, glad to have been reunited with their immense talent tonight 🙏
Does anyone recognize the vital role of that cello[?]? It saved them from becoming just another band. Also, the two voices of the brothers is just stupendous. I love the band and put them right up there with the Head and the Heart.
Viva NPR and the Tiny Desk crew! The Avett Bros fricking kill me. My cousin in Alabama introduced me to them. They had all Avett Bros music at their wedding. Not a January Wedding, but they did play it! Love and Respect
I noticed the date that this video was posted. It reminded me of when I first fell in love with their music, 12 years ago. Time flies! Thanks guys, for the great music!!
I'm sitting here listening to a playlist of Avett Brothers concerts and I have to say the AUDIO QUALITY on this video really stands out. I guess we can expect nothing less from the Public RADIO crowd, so Bravo to your audio folks, NPR!!
More and more Timestamps. Definitely not doing this for every single one... right? 0:28 - Laundry Room 5:58 - "Did you swallow an amplifier?" 7:28 - Down with the Shine 12:20 - Bella Donna
anyone else come back and listen to this every once in a while and then become completely re-obsessed with them or is that just me :’)
Same. I was looking at possible Red Rocks concert dates, saw their name and instantly thought of this video.
@@roniszR I am so ready for live music again I find myself searching artists and thinking , well a 6 hour drive isnt that bad

These guys need to come back for another Tiny Desk Concert. HD technology now exists!
Seriously.. forget their 1 performance per artist rule

It existed well before 2009... just don’t tell UA-cam 😆

Nah. Leave well enough alone, and let their Tiny Desk exist in the moment it happened. That's the moment it was meant to happen.
My best friend passed away in 2021, we loved the avett brothers. I just wish I could sing along with him one more time, but tonight I'll sing loud enough for the both of us.

The Avetts make me cry regularly because they somehow reach my cold, dead heart. I can't explain that.
They reach your heart because your heart is not cold nor dead. If it was, you wouldn’t receive their music they way you do, it wouldn’t touch you the way it does. Just sayin’.
True, true, that!

I’ve seen them live so much and it never gets old
Makes me want to sit in the mountains sipping whisky

Still here in Jan 2021, I watch this over and over again. Yes to inviting them back!

Just listened again after a few years. One of the greatest little moments in music history. Yes, it is.

+Tim Bell I love me some Avett Brothers, but man did they lose their way sometime around 2011....oh yeah, it was that Grammy's performance.
Oh, yea. When I talk about the Avett Brothers, I don't even consider anything done past the good half of I and Love and You
+Tim Bell Speaking of...hearing "Kick Drum Heart" on the show Parenthood was also a foreboding precursor of what was to come.
Amen to that, man... big time goose bumps at the 2:20ish mark when they start to get after it !

Stall your mother,
Disregard your father's words.
Close the laundry door,
Tiptoe across the floor
Keep your clothes on,
I got all that I can take
Teach me how to use
The love that people say you made
Stop your parents' car
I just saw a shooting star
We can wish upon it
But we wont share the wish we made
But I cant keep no secrets,
I wish that you would always stay
Last night I dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
I spent the whole day
I wrote 'em down, but its a shame
Tonight I'll burn the lyrics,
'Cause every chorus was your name
Break this tired old routine
And this time don't make me leave
I am a breathing time machine,
I'll take you all for a ride
There's a version they play with the lyrics changed to 'stop your sisters car' that I now include when I play this song. It always reminds me of the girls I had a a crush on that crushed right back when I was a teen in Northern Ontario.
Frank Wilk. The mandella effect
I don't understand. I know who Mandela is but why the Mandela effect. Too me the song captures a place and time I experience and instead of parents driving us around we had our own cars. I was driving at 13 not because I was a a delinquent but we just figured it out.
I have listened to this constantly for the better part of 3 months. Pure music from my home state :D
3 years 😕 it's a curse
+Ray Cuban a curse? I was thinking a blessing...
Man, this sends chills down my spine. This is the best version of Laundry Room that I have heard, including the original recording
They are just so musically inclined, true classic music!! Like The Staves, harmony just comes naturally. Love love love them.
Props to NPR Tiny Desk!
Their production quality has come a long way since 2009.
So so so so so thankful for this performance, without it I would have never discovered my favorite band
I watch this literally at least 3 times a day...Hasn't gotten old.
I know what you mean. Such energy, and passion. I loop the audio from this youtube when I'm on road trips or flying. I also think this short video is the best Avett Bro's album.
People still over use the word "literally" in 2020 for some reason.
Me too Jessi!!🎸🎻
Does anyone recognize the vital role of that cello[?]? It saved them from becoming just another band. Also, the two voices of the brothers is just stupendous. I love the band and put them right up there with the Head and the Heart.
you don't often hear vocals more powerful than all of the instruments combined. These guys are amazing

Still one of the best live performances ever
amen
Viva NPR and the Tiny Desk crew! The Avett Bros fricking kill me. My cousin in Alabama introduced me to them. They had all Avett Bros music at their wedding. Not a January Wedding, but they did play it! Love and Respect
This Tiny Desk Concert was the first time I saw the Avett's play. Man, these guys are powerful... the flawless energy sends chills down the spine.
Sheeesh this version of laundry room takes me somewhere else. Raw talent
Best musicians from America working today. Period.
Anyone here 2023? This doesn’t ever get old. ❤
Oh yes, I come here a couple of times a year to heal my soul.
This music has changed my life !!! Thank you Avetts!!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
I noticed the date that this video was posted. It reminded me of when I first fell in love with their music, 12 years ago.
Time flies! Thanks guys, for the great music!!
There so into the music, that's what so important about what they're doing :)
Yep. Still one of the greatest acts out there. Timeless.
Bring them back!
I'm sitting here listening to a playlist of Avett Brothers concerts and I have to say the AUDIO QUALITY on this video really stands out. I guess we can expect nothing less from the Public RADIO crowd, so Bravo to your audio folks, NPR!!
I think i've seen this 100 times and Laundry room still amazes me. I mean WHAT A PERFORMANCE
Best version of "Down with the Shine" I've ever heard.
I get more impressed with Seth Avett every time I hear him.
More and more Timestamps. Definitely not doing this for every single one... right?
0:28 - Laundry Room
5:58 - "Did you swallow an amplifier?"
7:28 - Down with the Shine
12:20 - Bella Donna
I fell like these are the type of guys who would have people listen to their music once and forever be faithful listeners. They're wonderful
Best version of laundry room. 9 years later and I'm still coming back to this video.
