I served on HMS Nottingham and they were pretty good. Lots of redundancy for a small ship, in comparison with other RN vessels. Downsides were very cramped living conditions, akin to WWII ships, a heating system based on steam that was never used because it gave everyone the flu, and very high fuel consumption. Upsides were lots of manpower, very manoeuvrable propulsion based on controllable pitch propellors, and the general nails-ness of its sensor and weapons fit.
On the newer ships, (batch 3?) There is what looks like reinforcement of the hull at deck level, running almost the length of the ship. Is that what it is?
Batch 3s were just gorgeous looking ships
Did my apprenticeship at VT working on Southampton, Nottingham and Gloucester... great memories ..
Finished the Gloucester got laid off
I had 5 drafts on them down the stokers mess, had a great time, laugh a minute. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Gread vid, my Uncle said the Type 42s were magic, a wonderful piece of kit.
The destroyer Sheffield, Antilope, Coventry are no longer magic
Julio Cesar Pizarro Its Antelope, and shes not a destroyer, shes a frigate

I'm always surprised that these where not moth balled just in case
My friend joined the Navy under the illusion he would be on a 42 in two years. He spent two years freezing on a mine sweeper instead lol
Mine sweepers were seen as a cut above when I was a radio operator. Less bullshit in the small ships

Reinforced because earlier batches developed cracks in heavy weather

Losses of type 42 and the frigates shaped modern air defence vessels today. Like the type 45.
