I wish when I was first learning guitar someone told me these 3 things to help my struggle with strumming.
1. Learn the chords really well.
2. Make sure you know the timing of the each chord.
3. Add things to your strum to spice it up.
God bless!
Matt
You taught me to play guitar at 57 years old. You go boy!
heck yea! love it Allen!
Late to the party. Outstanding tips for any beginner guitar player. I cracked up when you mentioned the up down down up up. Lol,. so true. I'm learning so much from your YT videos. Keep up the great work.
I never heard thinking of your strumming hand like a drum... pure genius
This is my second comment but I felt like I needed to say what a great thing it is to see a UA-cam personality that isn't afraid to show his faith in the lord! I respect you a lot! Keep on keepin on brother!
thanks so much DJ. i sure appreciate that brother! thanks for reaching out.
Thanks for your teaching.
Guitar and the Lord
Working from home during this pandemic has allowed me to get serious about learning guitar finally at 53 years old. I have toyed with trying to learn chords etc in the past and never got very far. Your videos have been the best for me and I have come a long way in just a few weeks. Thanks so much for putting them out there!
thanks man!
Love the sound of Taylor Guitars!!! So nice and crisp and bright! cheers Matt! 😁
Love your energy and enthusiasm. I’m a 66yr old retired engineer pursuing perhaps my last wishes on my bucket list. Actually, I guess I’m finally able to sit still long enough now. I have scoured the internet trying to absorb and learn everything about learning to play the guitar. I’m so glad I stumbled on to your videos. The finger patterns you’re teaching have really made a huge difference for me and this strumming lesson put it all together for me. I’ve become so inspired by the jump in success these techniques have given me, I’ve become obsessed with learning. I’m now practicing two to three times a day or whatever my fingers and hands will allow.
I also love when someone is truly emotional performing their music. I believe that teachers like you are the best of all human kind. Personally, I’ve never been more fulfilled than when I taught mathematics earlier in my life. I loved watching the “light turn on” in people’s eye’s. It’s easy to see this man loves music and cares deeply about others learning.
This particular video made a “light come on” for me. Hopefully the first of many. Thanks so much! I’m now a big fan!
wow!! thank you so much!!
That's the best explanation of simplifying strumming I've heard. Good job bud.
Matt, not only do I learn so much from your teaching but I love to listen to you play and sing. Thanks so much. Bless you!
Sitting here tonight just kinda regurgitating some basics. You taught me at 57 how to play. I sucked taking lessons in person. But you made it simple with your g-c-d-e-minor technique. If I hadn't found you I don't know if I'd still be playing. Matt McCoy is by far the best guitar teacher I know! Thank you brother!
Thank you, Matt. So good to see your genuine heart to share what you have learned. May God’s favor go before you and flow through you. To Him be the glory.
I appreciate that! amen!
Excellent tips. Thanks.
So so so much help. Thank you !! ❤️
Another great video thanks Matt great to have a Christian who loves the lord teaching peace blessings from Liverpool England 🏴
Amen brother as a hand percussionist I understand timing and But I couldn't understand the down up down up.. This makes so much sense and has made strumming so much easier..
Wow...you make it all come together. What a blessings! Thank you so much.

Hi Matt, if there's anything I didn't struggle with on Guitar is Strumming, it just comes so easily right from the time I started thankfully😊 You made me understand the reason, it's the TIMING I suppose which I was used to while Dancing.
i love this songgg its one of my favorite throwback songs, and i had no idea it was so simple. thank you!!

You are the best. Thank you for teaching me. Your such a great person. Thank god i found your channel god bless you sir !!!
awesome Billy! thanks bud.
best way to learn transitions i find is to just jam out and not worry so much about the melody but focus on really hitting those chords proper. youll even find yourself creating your own melodies.
Thank you Matt, I'm a beginner with out you I would have stopped trying, GOD BLESS YOU.
sweet! glad I can help Kenneth!
@@CountrySongTeacher I don't have strumming problems cause I pratice like crazy
I LOVE THIS SONG GREAT LESSN HANDSOME MAN
thank you Theresa
I have been playing guitar for many, many years and have always struggled with strumming. I wished I had this lesson years ago because it was one of the best that I have ever seen to explain it in a clear and concise manner. I, too, used to go to Ultimate Guitar and try to match those stupid down, up, down, up, etc. Thank you for this lesson, Matt!! I so much appreciate your help, channel, and videos. Blessings and Peace, Matt.
Dude.... YOU'RE THE BEST!!! 😍... I'm having a blast with your vids.. hopefully when things turn around for me I can get more involved in your programs!! Thanks so much for this.
I've always had realistic expectations on the guitar. I always just wanted to be able to play the "camp fire" versions of my favorite songs but the chords progressions were tough and I lost interest. That is until I ran across your channel. Just want to say thank you for sparking my interest again in the guitar and helping me blow people's minds at the camp fires. My first song, Georgia FL Holy was a big hit thanks to your lesson. Keep doin what your doin brotha.
Thanks Tilty Jones! So great to hear your musical spark has taken off since finding my channel - thats what my channel is all about! Keep serenading those camp fires my friend.
Great video! I learned keyboard through u. Btw thank you! Now I want to learn guitar. Didn’t think I would endure the finger pain holding down string but to my delightful surprise it didn’t last long. I’m really struggling with the pick. Catching strings to ruff just all around horrible. Can’t do up strum’s at ALL with pick.
I get it! you got this Cindy
You're awesome man! Thanks for teaching me.
Bought your staying at home dvd.(Still going to work daily). Looking forward to starting. God Bless you, Matt.
I’m an old guy, 55 yo, that didn’t start playing until maybe 10+ years ago... I’m still not good, but I can play a little. I wish I would have found your lessons sooner.
awesome man! you got this!

"the smell of your feet makes me feel that you need me" i can't unhear it 😭😭

Great lesson Matt, over here in the UK this song was a huge hit for Ronan Keating and his band Boyzone. Excellent song and lesson from you. Many thanks and best wishes from England😀😀
Love the videos, man. I am a customer now wish you great success... you deserve it.
Awesome video and thanks for sharing your tips 👍
Thanks for watching!
Great voice
Honestly, Compliments!
I am not a begginer, i know chords but I can't play a song, timing was the biggest problem.
This video makes me get the love back for playing after all the struggles. Hope that with practice and knowing this chord - 2 beats, this - 4 will help. Hahaha Wish you all successful learning!
You make all the songs so easy to sing and play. Which is difficult for me to do😊
Thanks again!! Keep them coming.
Yes I have your praise and worship in 10 days lost it but I desperately think I need to get your country guitar lesson gotten really good at Travis Tritt I’m going to be somebody started working on in case you didn’t know just to change up the cords a little bit definitely need a DVD though

Thx Matt, really appreciate how you simplified this for me. God Bless you & your family

She got the best of me by Luke combs would be awesome! also damn good friends would be a good one. Just want to say I love your videos! I'm a beginner and just started playing as a way to relax a little in college and get my mind off things.
Matt, you are the man! Keep up the good work. My guitar playing has gotten so much better because of you. Thank you brother. P.S. is that guitar a Taylor mini? Could you possibly do a video on your guitar collection?
Please do a tutorial of an Ashley McBryde song!
Good
can you do a tutorial on ZBB's new single "My Old Man"?
i'll see what I can do Jack!
Great videos man! Can you do a tutorial for cool with that by Brett Kissel? Thanks!
I just started playing 2 months ago your videos and 4 chord song book have really helped me. Im a little confused on how to add in upstrokes so all songs dont sound the same, like some songs have 4 g how do you add in upstrokes? are you counting up strokes as one of the g? when i throw in up strokes it throws my timing off
could you do a tutorial on sam hunts body like a back road?
had a lot of requests for that one...i'll check it out
Thanks man your the best
what do you think about people that dont play with a pick?
ie...me
What would you say the about playing with or without one?
I find playing with the pick too loud and just seems to create a higher pitch.
Matt, how do you get the chords you are using ? I love it and I can play them, but when I go to"Chordify" I see E Flat , A Flat, B Flat....
Where do I find the chords you use ?
Thank you so much !
What bpm should I learn on for the 2 count to get better
Hello. Thanks first of all for the video.
I do have this intriguing question as an absolute beginner. You strum the G cord with stings 1, 2, 5 and 6. The C cord with string 1, 2, 4, and 5 (with second and third frets) and lastly the D cord using strings 1, 2 (within the 3rd fret) and string 3 (second fret).
From what I watch on other chanels online and learnt, the C cord uses strings 1, 4 and 5 (within frets 1, 2 and 3) and the D cord strings 1, 3 (within frets 2) with string 2 (in the 3rd fret). Sorry I cant attach a photo, but as a more advance guitarist you must definitely understand what I am trying to say. Are those cords C (string 1, 2, 4) and D ( string 1, 2, 3) alternative of C with strings (1, 4, 5) and D (string 1, 2 and 3)?
Thanks in advance.
I just use an alternate way of playing chords
CountrySongTeacher I get it now. thanks a lot. And thanks for the prompt reply.
Hey Matt thanks for all the videos. So the best way to figure out how many beats per chord is slow down strums ???? That is the only part I am struggling with.
exactly..just slow down and listen and you'll hear the chord change in there over time.
For example when you say 2 beats per chord. When you strum down that would count is one beat and when you strum up would that count as the second beat? I am struggling bad with strumming
how do you play that dressed up D? Is the how to on another vid?
Yes! Type Matt mccoy D chord
Lots of Methods to hold Chords ; don't know what to Follow ! Please advise
Do you ship your dvd to the UK at all? I want to buy one?
get the digital versions Danny! lifelong access to online vids.
Here is a link to illustrate that. I just made a quick search: www.artofmanliness.com/articles/3-guitar-chords-every-man-should-know/. Here also his G cord is with 3 instead of 4 cords. Must be an alternative. As I earlier said, I'm a beginner. Thanks
👍🏼✌🏼🙏🏻 🫡
but do you strum all 6 string for every chord?
no...6 on G and Em, 5 on C and 4 on D.
CountrySongTeacher thank you sir
will you do a tutorial on the side of sober jacob bryant
i'll check it out Wesley
CountrySongTeacher alright thanks
What guitar is that?
this is a taylor GS mini
at 8:35 pause it. cuz hes pointing at you!
"he who refreshers others refreshers himself".. kinda selfish no? Im just teasing btw. You should read Ayn Rand: the virtue of selfishness.
Too much talk
