- Guitar Strumming AND Singing at the SAME Time ✅ Buy Lauren’s Strumming Course - laurenbatemanguitar.com/strum... - I get asked about guitar strumming and singing at the same time ALL THE TIME. It’s something that so many beginner guitar players want to do, but many don’t quite have the patience to develop. The truth of the matter is, if you want to play guitar and sing at the same time, you strumming hand needs to be on automatic pilot or it’s not going to work.
In this guitar lesson, I’m going to discuss some tips and tricks for how to practice guitar strumming and singing at the same time. I also have a couple of tests at the end that you can run yourself through to see if you are ready to sing and strum your guitar at the same time, or if you need a little more practice.

When I was a teenager in the 70's I asked my dad about this. He had played in bands most of his life, and he sang and played guitar. He said you have to do it so much that it becomes like driving a car. When we drive a car we can be doing several things at the same time without really thinking about it. Especially on a standard transmission. Pushing the clutch changing gears and signaling all at the same time while watching the traffic in 360° around you. We do all of this at the same time, without even thinking about it. It becomes almost like muscle memory. It's necessary if you want to be a good defensive driver. The skills in this video are important to become a versatile musician. Glen Campbell could not sing when his alzheimers started to advance because he would forget the words, but he could play the guitar a lot longer because of muscle memory. His arms, and fingers were on auto pilot. Thank you for this video. I have been playing a few years now, but still can use some help every once in a while. I appreciate your time in doing these video's. Plus this video just happened to remind me of my Dad, and that made me smile.
Aww glad to remind you of you’re Dad. But he’a right! It’s like driving a car or riding a bike. We do so many things based on muscle memory. The guitar is the same.
Right on Sarge!
If one simply does what this lady says, shows, plays & sings, they'll improve their playing ability hugely and very soon. I know, because I have. Practice, practice & then practice some more. Ain't no short cuts that I know of. This woman is awesome as a teacher. And I've had other guitar teachers in the past. She's almost "too good to be true," but of course, she is. And she's for real. How refreshing that is these days. JMO

Thank you for you and your Father and of course laurenbateman
I battled for over a month to get my brain to multitask in this way. For me it was that I was hooked on music and the guitar was my tool, locked myself into a room and drove my family crazy. Others have an easier time, I expect. It took years as a pastime to get my fingers to reach the chords. Then I focused on one song until I got it.
You can do it!
Finally!!The ultimate tutorial from the Ultimate Teacher
Rock one. Thank you!
Walkman reference I love it!
Man I’m getting old.
Ha ha. I know. I figured most of my audience would get the reference LOL
one year.. from 2020.. i learn from basic zero knowledge about guitar… lear by my self & from youtube…. now i can singing & playing guitar at the same time… & start made cover… love this hobby👍☺️
That's awesome!
When I was learning to play guitar and learning songs. My teacher set me up right. For one, he taught me to only practice guitar for 30 minutes at a time and never more than an hour a day. Now, I could play my guitar all I wanted but practice is more structured and results driven, practice with a metronome, but play from the heart! During practice, if I made a mistake, I would stop and correct myself, but when your playing and make a mistake, you just play through. So if your chord sounds dead just keep playing through it, and get back on track with the next chord. Also, he taught me to listen to live versions of the songs I wanted to play instead of just the studio versions. He also taught me that when it is just you and tour guitar, when your not playing in a band or with another person. your timing doesn't have to be perfect. You can draw out a word of a song, or what ever to get back on track. The most important thing is to play through it. You can qork on what you need to at your next practice session! Between the practice and playing you get better!
Love this! Thank you for sharing.
I practice sometimes for 4 or 5 hours . A lot of my favorites do as well. Maybe I misunderstood
Great job of explaining everything I am 61 years old so I appreciate it thank you for the lesson 👍🏻🤘🏻
You got it Sam
This is a good lesson. Especially because you emphasize the importance of taking it slow and easy.
I now know that there are no shortcuts. I have to put in the hours and hours of repetitive playing until my muscle memory kicks in.
Thank you Lauren for being you 🙂
You are so welcome!
Just LTL, (Listen to Lauren). And of course, do what she shows and advises, and you'll get much better, much faster. And no, she pays me nothing for my opinions. They're mine. And based on my experience with her, she's one of a few "class acts" left, I fear. On this platform.
Merry Christmas Folks. Ron
Hi Lauren I'll be 60 ( on the 4th of July ) and last weekend i sang and played for the very first time in a pub, i got a round of applause so i couldnt of been that bad lol and it's all down to you and your online lessons THANKYOU
Yes!!!! I love it.
Very helpful, Lauren. Thank you! ❤️
You're so welcome!
Thanks so much for this, Lauren! I was resigned to believing I could never play and sing at the same time. I can play (been playing a long time) and I can sing (I'm a rockstar when singing along to a song.) With these tips, I think it's possible I can combine these skills.
Hey Paul. If you can sing, you can play and sing. I do it daily. And I'm getting ready to demonstrate that on youtube. Not quite ready yet. I've always felt the need to be "B" or better, at anything I did. Lauren's an A+ at what she does on this platform. I believe there's no one better.
Two things that helps me a lot: whistle and using my foot as a metronome.
I'm not quite there yet but I'm seeing a lot of progress!
Great tips! Thanks!
You're welcome! Keep it up :D
So helpful lesson...
Thanks so much. It’s going to be my next student’s lesson! You’re the best, Lauren !! He’s in his 70’s and he’ll love the Johnny Cash song!
Oh awesome!!!
Thank you so much for breaking this down, Lauren! You are such a great teacher. I love your videos!
Happy to help!
Loved this Lauren, just starting out on my guitar journey so these are great tips.
Rock on!
Fantastic advice! Will be trying it out for sure. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh my gosh!! You are an amazing teacher! As a retired teacher of 30 years, I know about quality teachers. You get right on the level of your students. As an older student playing a baritone ukulele, I have been watching your channel. You have helped me so much with the cords that I cannot access because of arthritic fingers. I like the small size of the baritone uke and I like the way the strings are like the bottom 4 strings of the guitar. This is such a help to me because I want to play for my grandson’s little preschool class and sing some Christmas carols that are very simple. If you can point me into some very simple Christmas Carol direction, I’d sure appreciate it. Thank you so much❤️
Gloria, oh my goodness thank you. Yes I have some easier songs in my Christmas playlist. Check out Jingle Bells, Joy to the World. Here is my song list on my website:

Here is my UA-cam Christmas playlist:

Yes Gloria, this lady's solid gold as a teacher. Her teaching talent is going to allow me to join the youtube crowd soon as an entertainer, and I'll be 80 next month! Wish me luck. Thanks, Ron. And me too. I have to limp around due to arthritis in my left foot. That started 30 years ago! My dad had the same problem.
Thank you Lauren, I needed this video so much. Lots of great tips for strumming and singing at the same time.
Glad it was helpful!
Bravo Missy, informative lesson as always, thanks for teaching many skills besides playing the guitar,

Awesome! Keep it up!
Thank You Lauren for the tips! I have been singing and playing guitar for many years but really haven’t started putting the pieces together until I started following your channel. I was working on the G-C-D transition from Jet-plane and find My transition smoother while I sing than just strumming! Always have an awesome time during practice session now that I see the full roadmap! Even the wife says my sound has improved and she recognizes the songs I’m playing! 😂👍🙏🌵
So happy to help!! What a great compliment from your wife too.
Wow... This is a fantastic lesson!!!

Very Informative

This is brilliant. Thanks!
You got it!
Thank you for this video. I found this at the perfect time in my beginning stages. I was/am struggling with playing and singing. This Video has three simple steps for prractice. Repetition. I knew muscle memory was a must to play and strum but did not know how to practice toward that goal. Like walking and chewing gum or patting the head and rubbing the stomach. Such a clear lesson plan from Lauren. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU,! P.S. I am 75 years young and even I can follow this.
Glad it was helpful!

Aww thanks Rocky!
Hey Rocky, She's a KISS lady. Most youtube "teachers" don't know how to teach. I don't know why they're there, attempting to? Stick with Lauren. She's got teaching down. She knows & shows how you can learn as quickly as possible. Takes lots of practice, practice and practice. Merry Christmas.
You're amazing teacher, thank you! 😊
Thank you! 😃
U R incredible Lauren. U make things so simple & help fulfil my childhood dreams. And I spend about 3 hrs everyday with you practising 🎸. U R adorable. Thank U dear.

You're welcome!
Awesome thanks
Welcome 😊
This video is so on time for me. Been struggling with the idea of starting to sing while playing. Still haven't tried, but been thinking about it. This is exactly what I needed to get motivated. Thanks again for another great tutorial.
Sean glad to help. It's like tapping your head and rubbing your belly at the same time.
Hey Sean, I still can't tap my head and rub my belly at the same time, never felt the need. But I can play & sing. Albeit, not well enough. Yet. But those folks who surrounded my campfires in the 70s & 80s didn't seem to notice that. Or simply didn't care. Perhaps the "pass around" vodka saved me? Listen to Lauren. There's none better at what she provides on this platform. Practice, practice & then practice some more. And again, LTL (Listen to Lauren).
Amazing explanation, so good
Glad it was helpful!
Good lesson babe. Needed that One for sure.
Cool! 😊
This was super informative thank you!
Glad to help!
Wow! This lesson is just what I needed! Can you do a video on how to hold your pick and of the angle the pick must hit the strums please?
Already did that video. Search Lauren Bateman better sounding strums. The thumbnail is me holding at a pick at a wired angle.
Thanks 🙏🤩🎸
Thank you too!
Very good lesson here. I have been playing and singing for a long time but my down fall is I always play and sing sitting. Tricky chord progressions also make me slip up from time to time but with practice I can usually nail them down. I have a real hard time playing guitar standing with a guitar strap. But I'm not in a band and only play and sing for my enjoyment. I am a new subscriber and so far have enjoyed everything you teach. Thanks!
John, thanks so much for subscribing. Tricky chord progressions can throw you off, but really focus on the strumming then the singing.
Just what I needed Lauren if you haven’t seen my Facebook videos. I love to sing and play…
Yes I have!!! And yes you do 🤗
Well I'm 56 years old and have just started learning guitar again after 20 years or so and these short video lessons are really helpful, I've learnt more in the last month than in 20 years so much easier to learn from your excellent videos than reading a book many thanks.
Wayne I'm so happy to help you! That's what I do here on the channel. I make guitar make sense.
Hey Wayne. LTL (Listen to Lauren). I'll be 80 next month but I don't tell anybody. They might assume I'm old? LOL
I try not to "act my age." That might cause another car wreck? Reck'n we've got enough of them already. I'll crank out a video or three on youtube next month, if I'm still alive. See ya then. Ron
Lovely 😍
Thanks 🤗
Thank you so much Mam..It will surely going to help🇮🇳🇮🇳
Great!
I find that looking at something interesting or watching TV helps me train myself singing while playing as it helps me not think about strumming. This helps me develop muscle memory.
Nice to know that you found something that works for you!
I'm in the beginner/intermediate state. I have 2 strumming patterns that are engraved into my brain. Pretty much can do anything with those. But I'm having a harder time going past the 2 patterns I know already, which is keeping me from pushing forward with more intermediate songs. Have to go back to basics for new patterns because my mind still needs to tell my arm what to do.
Yeah, you got to get out of the comfort zone of playing those same patterns over and over again if you want to get to the next level.
Thanks lauren
You’re welcome 😊
Lol! "walkman battery dying down slow". Nice Laura you put in me in a reference there. I am still a student and I watch you for deconstructing things to make it simple. Thanks and cheers.
You are always welcome!
Cheers from Ireland, thanks for another great lesson
My pleasure!
This is the best singing and playing tutorial I've seen on YT! You make so much sense. Thank you! I have a lot of years playing guitar. Switched from electric jazz to acoustic fingerstyle (self taught) as I got older. Would love to be able to just strum and sing as well. You've provided concrete advice and tips that I think will get me started. I'll check your site for a list of songs. Something simple. BTW, they say that this gets easier as you go along. Is that true?
Hi Nikki, it does get easier as you go for sure. Glad you enjoyed the lesson!
Yeah. Excellent breakdown.
Appreciate it!
Good stuff
Appreciate it
I think I’m almost there. I going to try it tomorrow when I practice. Thank you
Awesome!
Wow wow so amazing video ma more grace
Thank you!
I ordered a Fender Digital tuner from Amazon. I would be so tickled to be able to do the strumming. A huge step for me. Thank you Lauren! Mike
Good luck. You will get it.
To Melody. I'm too busy practicing now, thanks to Lauren. I'll add some videos (with songs) to my youtube page as soon as I feel (and hear) that I'm ready. Ain''t quite there yet. I'll also be listening to your songs and will have a comment for you after I do. Thanks for touch'n base, and take care, lady.
Take care!
