Excellent advise. I was stuck in strumming all chords with the same hard strum until a friend mentioned the exact same things Lauren does in this video. It takes practice to change old habits, but my strumming sounds much better now.
This is really good information that my daughter and I can use to learn more about strumming. I might use the soft > medium > loud game as a way to get us used to the different dynamics. I might even try having a conversation where the strumming has to match how we're talking. Should be interesting
Great lesson! I always thought I was SUPPOSED to hold the pick tightly and strum from my elbow. This video gives me a bunch of practical bitesize steps to work on, including wrist flexibility. Thanks

@@LaurenBateman Well Lauren, I’m gonna try and keep this comment from turning into a novel, but I want you to know what you did for me, so get your reading glasses on. VVVVV I’m 26 years old, never played an instrument, I was a talented athlete from my first step, so that was my focus, but In the back of my head, I always wanted to play something. Fast forward to now, I’m a little over a year in recovery, and I have a window of free time after work and before bed where I’m all alone and have nothing to do. This triggers my anxiety and loneliness. I’ve been trying to find something positive and productive to fill this gap. I decided to give guitar a try, a buddy let me use his old Washburn. I spent a week watching videos, downloading apps, and nothing clicked. I only got discouraged and was convinced that it just wasn’t for me, I wasn’t capable. I was about 2 more videos away from giving up, and I landed on a Lauren Bateman beginner lesson, and finally made some progress. I ended up watching for about 2 hours straight, and by the end I was playing chords ! I spent a whole week trying different apps and videos and never got past holding the guitar. Now I am 4 days into training via your videos and I can play some simple songs, switch chords, tune my guitar! But the best part is I found something that fills my void, I love the feeling I get while I play, my anxiety is gone when I’m strumming, I don’t feel lonely when I’m watching you on my laptop, and following along. You have made a huge difference in my life and you should feel great about it !!

This so incredibly helpful. I'm learning to play the guitar later in life, so having your help to identify the issues that I'd have to slowly and painfully discover on my own--if I ever did--is immensely helpful. Thank you.
I use a 3mm Dunlop Stubby triangular pick, what I do, I smooth the ends rounder with either emery paper or some sandpaper and finish it off with fine sandpaper or emery paper, so the ends are nice and smooth and rounder. I seem to get a nice smooth sound strumming and lead playing . Try it out. Takes a while to adjust to the thick gauge, definitely try a 3mm round edge pick and shape the ends more rounder and smoother. With the thickness of the pick and the shaping of the ends, you get a quality smooth sound. I am going to try a 5mm pick and do the same round and smooth the ends of the pick, see what occurs, see if it's any different.
Hi Lauren, Your lesson videos are so helpful to me. Along the lines of this one, I am trying to find lesson and a simplified version of Peet Townsand's 'Let my love open the door to your heart'. Can you do one on that please? Thank you.

Well I'm learning guitar from youtube for a long time...but when I found one of Yours video...it was awesome...and now I'm doing much better from before..just thanks to you ❤️
I saw a video when I first began my guitar that suggested that I hold my pick downward at a 45 degree angle while I strum. So I tried it, but all it did was make a zipper sound across the strings. It didn't sound like a strum at all. I still struggle with strumming, and I'm horrible at up strums for some reason. I don't really know why I'm struggling with something that seems so simple, but I'm still working at it. I need to work on gliding as you've suggested here, so I've gotten some softer picks. I also finally got a capo, so now I can follow all of your lessons.
Thank you for the tip about upstrokes honestly, I always cant pinpoint why my strumming sounds so awful and seems to clash. The hitting a few strings tips totally makes a lot of sense
Superb lesson, it's all about putting your own feeling and emotion into a song, not just random strumming of chords, similar to singing a song not just saying the words

Thanks for that Lauren. Some more very useful tips. Like all beginners i tend to strum to robustly which makes me conscious of the overbearing sound I'm making. This can be off-putting. I keep thinking my neighbour will come to my door. 😫. I do find all your videos very useful because they keep me motivated. Thanks 👍
You're the only one who explains how to strum in the internet.. Thank you very much sorry for my bad English. I'm a beginner and I want to thank you. Hi Donald, they will, but I recommend making sure you have a very clean guitar tone on your amp if you're using one. Anything with distortion will not sound good at all.
Rank beginner…5-6 weeks in. Sort of sensed, learned the thing about the pick angle but you’re the first one I e heard teach this. I didn’t have confidence in what I felt must be right! Thank you
Really enjoy your teaching of the guitar, just picked up the guitar back in July 2019' been wanting to learn for yrs decided to just to do ,and I'm enjoy the lessons and the instrument.
Great lesson! I learned more from this 8 minute video than I feel like I've learned in years on my own or with a guitar teacher! You have a really good way of breaking things down to the basics that is hard to capture in guitar instruction videos or that guitar teachers seem to gloss over. Now I KNOW why my guitar strumming has sounded bad in the past compared to other players who picked up the same guitar: the strumming dynamics. Thanks for the great lesson, I may very well sign up for more :)
Thankyou so very much for helping me with guiter lessons how to pick your guiter I always love playing the guitar 🎸 but I played it to loud didn't know how to do the picking .
I found by relaxing my wrist and getting a more fluid movement, I was able to play the intro to "That Will Be The Day" by Buddy Holly. I have more confidence now. :)
Really enjoyed this video.. I love your down to earth videos. I am not exactly a newbie but definitely not seasoned and learning so many wonderful tips and tricks. Bravo!

Lauren this is kind of off subject but can you please explain the importance of learning first position. I am over 60 and I am taking guitar lessons. Total beginner.here, but in the beginning my instructor stressed the importance of first position and since I haven't been able to master that I have developed some kind of a mental block and I can't move forward. I also wanted to mention that I bought a parlour size guitar thinking it would help my playing but it really hasn't. I am really enjoying your lessons thanks so much!
Isabel, first position is referred to as the first 3 frets of the guitar. Your instructor is right. We also call this open position because the chords learned at this point are open, not barred. Barre chords are very difficult for beginner to learn. Learn your open chords first, A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, Fmaj7, G and you will be able to play many songs.
loving your lessons Lauren. I'm a beginner but started doing stage stuff at our local jam club. Only then did I learn the need to mute strings when going electric !!! I think this would be good to do with beginners like me as I had to change my technique a little to adapt and I'm a slow learner (age 63!!)
Thanks for the lesson Lauren! Will work on strumming especially the top and bottom strings tip to get more interesting sounds. Btw...I’ve been working hard on the finger pushups and other various finger exercises you teach and see it is really helping me so thanks for that too!🎸🎼👍

Thanks Lauren , I really love your guitar lessons, they are soo nice and easy to understand, for me I am still new begginer I would like to know more about playing guitar .
Hey Bismark, that's fantastic. I'm glad that you found this super helpful.
Guitar playing like a conversation. Great metaphor for the way to strum. Thank you very much.
Glad you liked it!
Gurur brahma gurur Vishnu gurur devo Maheshwara gurur saakshaat para brahma tasmai Sri guruave namaha...... thank you so much for teaching us so beautifully 💚
You're welcome!
I'm not using a plectrum, just my fingers. Wrist is flexible, am taking really long to get going. It's good fun. You are good at teaching
Dione, thank you!
Thanks 👍
Keep at it Paul. You will continue to get better over time.
You're the only one who explains how to strum in the internet.. Thank you very much sorry for my bad English. I'm a beginner and I want to thank you. I learning at home and I play most the time with fingers (i try) because with pick is my guitar too loud.. I'm frustrated cause I can't play loud. In this video I've learned I can be silent also with pick. Thank you
Happy to help!
Hi MS Bateman, I have trouble with keeping my finger straight. I always have the 1st finger bending down a little bit. How can I make that finger and my other fingers? Stay straight on the court question. Mark thank you for all you do for beginner guitar lessometimes. I want to say that you make it quite easy and interesting. Thank you again .
Steve😊
You are welcome!
Thanks for the lesson, I have a big problem with the quality of my strumming, and I´m sure this exercise will help me to fix it

You got this!
Wow, great to learn more about the techniques to be a really good player! Thank you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dynamics in action: Check out Matt Anderson “Ain’t No Sunshine” Live at the Pearl Theatre. Matt is a master of using dynamics!
Awesome. Thanks for the suggestion.
This is very helpful and my neighbors will appreciate it too! Thanks Lauren. I have a song request. How about a David Gray tune like "Babylon" , "Sail Away," or "Please Forgive Me"?
Hey Gordon, great recommendation. I get lots of song requests so I cannot guarantee that I will get to it, but I will definitely add it to my list
If I don't play for a week, I need to warm up more to hit the strings I'm aiming for. Most of my favorite songs don't have full strumming. It's a feel. I'm trying to get rid of my pick noise.
You got this!
Can you do a lesson on finger picking?

@@corky1548 you got it
I love fingerpicking😩 hahaha
Thank you Lauren
I'm 52 and learning guitar .I play electric guitar.will your stunning pattern work on electric? U are a good teacher
Thank you
I’m going to watch this video 100x
You're so welcome!
Ken yes watch at over and over. You always watch lessons 2-3 times.
Learned something new for my strumming,Thank you Lauren!
You are welcome 😊
Really enjoy your teaching of the guitar, just picked up the guitar back in July 2019' been wanting to learn for yrs decided to just to do ,and I'm enjoy the lessons and the instrument.
Hey Mike, that's awesome. So happy to help you
Excellent. Explanation. Addressed one of my problems
Glad it helped!
Ron you're welcome. I'm not a university trained musician so I have a slightly different perspective one teaching. Glad my videos help you.
@@LaurenBateman I like your teaching style. It works for me😊
Very helpful things to know. Thanks, Lauren!

Glad to have you back.
Thankyou so very much for helping me with guiter lessons how to pick your guiter I always love playing the guitar 🎸 but I played it to loud didn't know how to do the picking .
Rock on!
My up strum is so stiff. This video is helpful. Thanks Lauren! 👍 Practice makes perfect, or better. Ha!
You're so welcome!
As always brilliant presentation, how long would you suggest a beginner should be playing before trying DYNAMICS?
Really depends on the student but you can start working on soft and hard after 1-2 months of strumming.
I found by relaxing my wrist and getting a more fluid movement, I was able to play the intro to "That Will Be The Day" by Buddy Holly. I have more confidence now. :)
Yes!!!!!
Great video! I think this will help me. I sound terrible and I am strumming way to hard. Thank you.
You can do it!
Really enjoyed this video.. I love your down to earth videos. I am not exactly a newbie but definitely not seasoned and learning so many wonderful tips and tricks. Bravo!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks Lauren. I was looking for this exact information.

You're welcome!
Lauren your a great teacher I love the lessons please keep them going
Will do!!!
You make my Songwriting endeavors more rewarding❤😊
@@LaurenBateman oh thank you so much!!
loving your lessons Lauren. I'm a beginner but started doing stage stuff at our local jam club. Only then did I learn the need to mute strings when going electric !!! I think this would be good to do with beginners like me as I had to change my technique a little to adapt and I'm a slow learner (age 63!!)
Yes muting strings is very important on electric.
@@LaurenBateman impressed that I got a comment. you really are a great teacher.
So glad I found you! You’re a great teacher and have a nice style. Thanks for your help.
You are so welcome!
Wonderful ! You are very good in teaching !
Thank you! 😃
That was helpful having trouble
With up strumming.
Glad it helped!
When I hold the pick lightly, it slips out of my fingers. Can't seem to find that happy medium yet. Great video though, thank you for sharing.
Dunlop Max Grip picks.
Thanks for this lesson. I need to improve my strumming. This lesson has been very helpful 😉.
You're very welcome!
Thanks Lauren, I'm a beginner guitarist and sometimes use a 1.0m pick to thick would you say. Keep up the great video lessons. 😀
For strumming that pretty thick. Power chords on electric sure, but acoustic, it can be.
i really like the way you share the idea, just like story telling way!
I am glad you like it!
Awesome lesson thank’s you a great tutor. I got a lot out of this 👍especially playing soft and getting louder.
Great to hear!
You are really super... i enjoy your lessons ... thank you for your simple way of teaching ❤

Thanks for the lesson Lauren! Will work on strumming especially the top and bottom strings tip to get more interesting sounds. Btw...I’ve been working hard on the finger pushups and other various finger exercises you teach and see it is really helping me so thanks for that too!🎸🎼👍
