This is amazing! I'm getting ready to paint a dresser and needed this video. It has a veneer top and I had no idea how I was going to make it look like real wood. Thank you :)
You should let us know if you need to let paint dry in between treatments and next color added. I’d love to do this to a couple of nightstands I’m reading for the guest room, then I’m putting up vertical shiplap on the accent wall behind the bed and this room is done except closet redo.
My burnt umber dried like crazy fast and was a lot darker should I add some water to it ? Yours looked straight from the bottle. But I even tried wiping in little sections.
You are a true artist Shannen! This is fabulous and really helpful. Your videos deserve 1000s more subs and 'likes'. This paint effect on the 'Zinser'+paint undercoat is nothing short of brilliant. Add to the your 3 equal part paint mix for super quick makeovers. You have revolutionised the furniture flipping job with time-saving inventions and so few people know. Let them take the extra hours...and hours if they want to! Thank you so much for sharing. Every success to you! Blessings to you. G Ire
I love your work you are one of my favorites. Just wondering if you could use white chalk paint instead of the primer, as you are not supposed to get any bleed through with chalk paint?
LOVELY!!! Is there a reason you don't use a roller for larger areas, like initially when you were painting the yellow? I'm lazy so is it alright if I did? 🤣
I wished everything was more specific, did u allow coats to dry between paintings? I tried this and the brown paint seemed a lot thicker and didn’t spread as easy as the video looks like it did ? It didn’t wipe off that easy either. Do you use a dry paper towel or damp? What am I doing wrong ?
Hey Kina! Sorry it gave you trouble, I do use a dry paper towel but this video is older so maybe they changed the formula of the paint? Also could be the base coat, which paint did you use as the base coat? It helps me to use primer or a paint with a bit of satin sheen bc it allows the paint to slide around vs chalk paint will absorb it all up quickly. You could add some glaze to the brown or use rustoleum decorative glaze it dries much slower than traditional paint. I’ve been using it mostly in my faux pottery barn looks these days like in this video - ua-cam.com/video/xzQtCpocRhg/v-deo.html hope that helps a bit 🖤
@@blacksheephouse Thank you so much for responding! I first primer with the band primer, ultimate stain block then II used sherwin-Williams ovation plus in satin! I will try what you suggested if I don’t decide to try a waterbase are all based stain. I’m watching some UA-cam videos on that thinking that might be easier but I’m not sure if I can use a oil based stain and mess up, how hard that will be to get off without having to go into the paint and primer lol! Again, thank you so much for responding. I appreciate it and I appreciate all your help.
After you apply the primer how long do you let it dry before applying the paint. You’re not specifying how long between each application it needs to dry
I follow the instructions on the can, I hesitate to say how long because different climates make a big difference in dry times. So just check the can, but I usually move forward with the next step when I it’s dry to the touch. Hope that helps ❤️
I’ve been looking for a video on this exact technique (specifically with the graining tool), for MONTHS, to no avail. So I can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled I am to have unexpectedly stumbled upon yours. Thank you, thank you, thank you!.. This is by far theeeee best faux wood look I’ve ever seen. Question with regards to different wood tones & color selection- Is there a rule of thumb when choosing these specific colors? Ex: If I wanted to attempt a faux weathered wood look using this technique, I’d obviously want to use gray tones. But how do I know which ones to choose? (Would I need 3 different light gray colors, 2 dark grays, 1 white, 1 black?) Is there a generalized formula to this or is it something you figure out by playing around with different colors? I hope I’m making sense and not making this too difficult; as I tend to overthink. Would I need a certain amount of light gray colors and a certain number of different
It’s something I figured out by playing around with color combos. You can usually use the same base for different colors and then just switch up the top colors like you mentioned using a mix of grays. I usually take a scrap piece of wood and mess around until I get a combo that I like color wise, at one point I even took my sample board into pottery barn to compare lol I do have quite a bit of faux wood looks here on the channel but I don’t have a weathered gray
@@blacksheephouse yesss I actually went back to your channel to see what other vids you had and I watched a similar one…which also came out gorgeous. Actually, ironically enough, I’ve been on the hunt for a video like this for at LEAST 6 Months and little did I know, I was subscribed to your channel all along!! 🤪🔫 I have no idea when I subbed. But I obviously saw something I liked. Anyways, thanks again for not only taking the time to share your amazing talent with us. But for taking the time to respond to my question. I really appreciate your feedback and can’t wait to see your next piece. (And if you’re ever in need of content material, I’d soooo love to see you slay that faux weathered look). 😉 Thanks again for your help! xoxo
So talented! I noticed you don’t do much sanding, what do you do if you have a piece of furniture that has its dings and scratches throughout the years? Do you fill those with a filler then sand? Or do you sand the whole piece down to try eliminating lot of them that way? I know it depends on what you’re working on is real wood but I’m still trying to learn that part also! Watching your videos have helped so so much! Especially in times like these were I feel so overwhelmed and so not confident in my decision making! Lol HELP
Hi! I don’t know what emulsion paint is but yep those are acrylics ❤️ they are just the folk art and Apple barn craft paints commonly found at craft stores
Looks awesome! I tried it on a dresser top...but when i put the polycrylic on it took the paint off in some areas...do you have any idea why that would happen?
@@janet7024 hey 👋 sorry I need to make list of supplies Just search /look up “graining tool” on Amazon or I bought mine at michaels it’s a rubber material
The piece turned out beautifully! But it is entirely too many processes for the dresser top only. Stripping and sanding real wood gets my vote. It saves a few weeks of labor. 😂
Iam a little Bit confused, you Show your techniques at a nightstand i believe, and at then, you Show the top of an dresser, you dont Show the top of the small piece finished?? Did i Miss Something??
I was doing them both at the same time, same look for a matching set. I definitely should’ve showed you guys the nightsyand too at the end haha! I’ve def gotten better at UA-cam since this video thank goodness haha ❤️
😮 OMG it's so beautiful & you make it look so simple.
I do this all the tym..I paint first a day then stained it and wipes . It comes out so good. Clients loved it

I agree. I’ve been watching many of her older videos and I would like to know whether (and how long) she let the paint dry between each coat dry.
All I can say is, WOW! Great job.
Doing my floors soon! Thanks for the tips

Does the base primer need to be mixed with yellow or will just white work as well?

What colors in the acrylic paint do you recommend if I would to do the same technique but a pine wood look?
But is that going to last? Being acrylic paint?

Where do you get the wood graining tool

After you applied the 1st coat of burnt umber did you wait before applying the rest of the colors?
Just until each one is dry to the touch
