“Jannik Top... oh, man, Jannik Top. I’m shaking in me booties just thinking ‘bout him. Jannik Top played the bass like a Tyrannosaurus Rex skinning a Stegosaurus. He was at least eight feet tall and had claws instead of hands. His bass sound made the night fall early, and kept the moon from rising at all. He didn’t have amplifiers, he just plugged straight into the National Grid and drained the neighbourhood.”
@@hugotessier5138 I usually prefer the O.G. too even if he is less technically adept. I think Bussonet has unbelievable technique. Top did too, of course. But Bussonet edges him out a little in the technical arena.
The first time I heard De Futura live, inside the song, there was a 45 min crescendo, I was about to die. it was in 96, right after the reformation, with the original setup. Never forget this sensation.
If magma was prog, they had nothing to do with the progressive rock as a scene, they evolved out of Christian Vanders vision alone. Zeuhl is not prog, its a form for french fusion but with a symphonic sound influenced by John Coltrane, Carl Orff, Stravinsky and north Brazilian samba music. Its certainly pompous but its very different from typical symphonic prog, one can say that Zeuhl is like a separate prog genre in a sense, and prog sub genres like RIO (Rock in opposition) are a bridge that connects Prog and Zeuhl. Whats awesome about de futura is its proto death metal/proto stoner metal like sound, how jannick top and Christian vander came up with this sound in 1975 is a mystery, its certainly more brutal then all other music at the time!
Magma's music always been something from another dimension, even in the 70's. I suggest you to take a listen to the first track of their second album, called Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh
The Udu Wudu version of De Futura is how it's supposed to be. None of the live versions come close to bringing what it's meant to convey ( and I've seen my share of Magma lives as I started to listen to them in 1988 ). De Futura is not music, it's a concept, an atmosphere, a constant menacing fright. Should you want to go further into Magma, I believe their most daring yet musical piece is Kohntark from the 1975 live. An absolute masterpiece !
Brutal and macabre indeed. Magma hail from another dimension and are channeling sonic information from the borderlands of cosmic terror. Knowing this either helps or hinders the listener. Thank you Ruben!
Haha.. the look on your face.. This was king, live in 2014. I was born 30 years too late for this band and still managed to see them. Blessings to you for reacting to them!
@@ouroborosnagyok9306 It's exactly representative of their sound and rhythm of the first albums - Kobaia, MDK, Köhntarkösz, Udu Wudu, Attahk.. - i.e. the sound of extraterrestrial visitors who listened too much John Coltrane.
I love this music to bits, the bassline is pure evil, the drums keep you by the balls with its unrelenting pace, the background soundscape makes you feel imprisoned, there is now escaping De Futura, you can only y accept your demise. Legendary.
Thanks so much Ruben for reacting to this absolute masterpiece, It was great seeing you go through a full range of emotions haha, it is a trip. Jannick Top the bassist drives this song, some of the best bass playing out there. There is a whole ocean of progressive music out there which I hope you get the opportunity to explore on your channel. Pleasure to support you. Cheers!
Try the first album (double) called Kobaia. A bit more eclectic with more shorter songs, less dark I guess... A nice way to get into it. And excuse my english, I'm french. I saw them a dozen times since Christian Vander reformed the band somewhere in the late nineties and I can tell that they are so great live! It's a real experience (you can find concert videos on youtube). They play on metal or jazz festivals so if you have the opportunity it totally worth it.
@@BrimChilling Magma is well known in France for those who liked rock music in the 70's and the 80's, and it is very respected by people who are in experimental music, and also in conservatoires (french classical music schools). All the french drummers know about Christian Vander, he is some kind of a legendary drummer (people usually say he's the best of them all).
Haven't had Magma in my ears since the 1970's. I remember they were a French band and because singing in French doesn't suit this kind of music, they invented word sounds to fit.
@Izno Iznogoud Don't listen to Köhntarkeusz. The song was not finished back then and yet they put it on an album. Listen to Köhntark instead from the live album.
Recorded in 1976 with 3 musicians (Top on bass, who also wrote this tune, Vander on drums and Blasquiz singing) with some overdubs by Janik Top after. They play it live often and its always great. The band still goes on. And when you listen to them you can't do anything else. As you said "it's something else".
De Futura is the greatest collaboration between Christian Vander and Janick Top and one of the most powerful piece that Magma has done in my opinion. They are a supremely powerful and humourless band. Deadly serious, committed and focussed to their vision.
When they played under the name VanderTop in 1976 they recorded a live album in Paris. That version of de Futura is both slower and faster than the album version. Grittier, scarier, looser. Probably one of my favorite recordings of all time
Magma one of the best bands in the world. 50 years and active. Maybe one day im gonna to see them live. Some say they take to another galaxy sitting in front of them
Coming back a year later: the song builds dread upon dread until it explodes- it begins with such slowness and then over time it continues to create dread until it shifts tempos and begins to move at nuclear speed- and then atomizes at the end- which is why this is so epic. The bass here is by Jannik Top, who wrote this composition.
Ruben If you want there is an other version of =De Futura = with an rytmic box (no drums) composed by jannick Top himself it s the first version It begin with a priest in german linguish!!! The record is SOLEIL D ORK by jannick Top
best take I know of: Toulon, nov 1976: ua-cam.com/video/mXWYO_9B2xI/v-deo.html : tellurique. thanks, Ruben, for this rare reaction and this amazing music.

Best bassguitar artist ever
Yes... but I think Phillipe Bussonet is even better. Bernard Paganotti was awesome too (founder of Weidorje).
@@hugotessier5138 Yes, better IMO (hence the "I think" qualifier).

Best group no one has ever heard of.
Well known and cult in France. If people from other countries would listen something else than american music..
Monsieur Facts.
Agreed
No doubt.
Love this band. The greatest. A desert island band. Great Reaction 👍👍

Relentless procession, acceleration, compression, ignition. Magma essence
saw this on stage...2 hours to come back on the earth... La claque de ma vie !

The greatest band there is.
Brutal introduction with that choice. Dark and heavy.
If you liked this, you'll love "Köhntark" from 'Magma--Live' (32 minutes in total, but well worth it!).

Wow. I'm late to this party. I suggest anyone watch the live video of De Futura on UA-cam. Death metal bands try to look scary. These guys could be scary as fμ©k live. There musicianship was outstanding.

Magma is an awesome band.... another great prog group from that era is Goblin....from Italy.
Yeah, another good one was Bigglietto per l'inferno they only released 2 albums but By the power of greyskull they were two amazing ones.
Goblin were amazing, though not Zeuhl.
Universal Totem Orchestra is italian and sounds (not fully) as zeuhl
Pfm?
Das Zheul Wortz Mekanik!!!
you should check their Epok I version of Theusz Hamtaahk. it's here on youtube, but it's 35mins long

Fantastic
You have to listen to the piece when you're totally at rest, preferably in the dark. Then it WORKS!
The bass groove and christians drumming is so heavy. One of my favorite bass lines.
Merci beaucoup !
Top is a cello player and tuned his fretless in fifth that allowed him this playing
He wrote this tune that original title was De Futura Hiroshima ….
The Groove
Udu wudu best album ever heard
Welcome to Zeuhl Rubens ;)
Between the Buried and Me - Condemned to the Gallows !!

Me: "Well let me introduce you to the wrecking ball".
Would you test Eskaton - 4 Visions next, please?
Hi, react, please, to "Toe - Goodbye (live)/with Toki Asako" they play a fusion of mathrock and postrock :)
I suggest K.A III
Here is the end of De Futura with the band in full flgith and Jannik on bass with Phillippe on piccolo bass. ua-cam.com/video/kzlMw8jqv4k/v-deo.html
Jannik top on the top
Disbelief - Follow
What was the bloody time signature during the bass riff
they played it live like hell - you should check Albert Marcoure if you havent
Albert Marcoeur is a better option.
zoomers might recognize this song from Death Grips
Ruben, in terms of the menacing and sinister nature of this composition, its original title was "De Futura De Hiroshima."

Dushen ill 1975
also check out the cover (!) by the flying luttenbachers... even more brutal, with double bassdrum, which would have come in handy here.

you should listen to the Nancy version of de futura which is much more louder!

the fuck is this, lol.
