Best band of the World for me.
me 2 ❤
Ah, and one more comment: the guitarist, James Mac Gaw, sadly died a little over 2 years ago from brain cancer. He is dearly missed. He was a really good guy who placed with Magma and with a number of other bands.
Big memory from my youth ... I saw then in the 80 ... Hawkwind, Gong, Magma, the pink Floyd (first concert when I was 16) , Jetho tull, Zappa ... Thanks a lot for this moment :)
It sounds like prog rock written by aliens.
Magma was more into Fusion Jazz than prog rock, and at the end they created their own genre called Zeul
I was there that night in Paris✨
I saw them live in 2005 - but this performance is from a set of four gigs in Paris, where they had some band members from the past as guest stars. Here it's Klaus on vocals (the guy who did the deep tone) and Jannick on bass. Their regular bassist, who is an absolute beast by the way, Philippe Bussonnet is not playing here.
The whole set of DVDs they released, Epok 1-4 are really awesome (I think 3 is my favourite) and Epok 5 release later is also great.
Vander not only drums, he sings, sometimes in an unhinged falsetto! - and the faces he makes while signing are as wild as his drummer face. Worth finding a live video of a song he sings on (such as "Hhai"). A unique stage presence, to go with the unique music.
He also writes much of their music, and I'm pretty sure he does all of the vocal charts.
Great pick!
I was there this day. The best performance I've ever seen on stage. "The Triton" concert hall is small (~150 seats), so you're in there and you feel the music is in you. The trance was total. Magma celebrates this year the 50th anniversary of the MDK piece with a special concert in October, I will attend of course.
Incredible band spearheaded by the genius Vander. My life is incomplete until I see them live, and I hope to do it sooner than later as Vander isn't getting younger!
They're in Nancy next month with Marcus Miller
@@chrrev1 I was in the UK and planning to see them in Nancy, but got sick.
Yeah met him a few times, lovely chap. Totally unpretentious.
I'd love to request more Magma in the future, but a lot of the stuff on UA-cam is 15 minutes long or more, or of dubious audio/video quality due to its age.
There's definitely a comedic element on first exposure - the crazy music and Christian Vander's crazier face pulling is always going to get a chuckle. Once people get past that, they'll discover a truly fascinating band packed with top quality musicians and vocalists. An acquired taste for sure, but one worth acquiring.
Thank you for a great surprise. These are reminders! We checked out Magma back in the 70's alongside the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gong, Soft Machine and other progressive bands. Magma had developed their own language for their lyrics. That was funny reading the inside cover and not getting anything at all.
That’s so interesting! FourBleats was trying to explain that to me but I didn’t quite get it at the time 😅
@@WavePotter It can be hard to explain some of the details in the fast moving live streams. The constructed language is called Kobaïan. It's spoken by the people of the planet Kobaïa, who are effectively refugees from the doomed plant Earth. There's a loose story across the Magma discography and other Zeuhl groups have adopted the language and story line. It sounds a bit Germanic and I think it's meant to express emotions in the music rather than being directly translatable. That's why it has a kind of tribal / gospel / spiritual vibe. That said, there was once a Kobaïan-English dictionary on the interweb - maybe it's lurking somewhere in the Wayback Machine.
Tightest band ever....often intense, never disappointing. Music to immerse yourself in. They are a musical triumph
Saw magma 10 days ago in Nancy jazz pulsation, really the best live I saw from them, 8 or 9 concert in 20 years, with jimmy top, jannik ‘s son
They ‘re playing mdk and theumz amthak, exceptionnel moment
Mdk was wrinting in 73 . Its the most known album From Magma , but if u want you have to listen Theusz Hamtaahk : Trilogy
They even invented a new language the Kobaian
musician today can't do things like this anymore! i love magma
Vander used to take 45 minute solos in concert 😮
i have seen him on stage. He was also singing very well.A very great artist...unic
That song and version are incredible, but this recording doesn't let you hear all the subtleties of the band's sound. They still play together, and I heard them recently for the nth time, but with just 8 voices and a piano, it was as tight as ever and just incredible!!
I have seen them three times! Out of this world!
C’est Antoine paganotti qui chante et pas Klaus Blasquiz sur ce MDK.
On a dit que Magma n’était pas !.... 😉
Love Magma! how can it be so tight?!? 😅🤯
cause they're good musician!!! ;-)
Magma is known for singing in a language they made up.
More like Neil Peart's uncle
Surtout multi casse c....... de couper la musique pour dire des bêtises
From Paris here. Christian Vander is on drum the equivalent of Robert Fripp on guitar: entering Magma is like entering King Crimson and the League of Crafty Guitarists. It is a cult of absolute musicianship, devotion and discipline. Just like King Crimson, every member end up having a career as a highly sought after studio shark. I would highly recommend exploring the band / musicians if you can find some, see:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magma_(band)
I saw Magma live 2-3 times, and Jannick Top (the bassist here, aka "caveman") once with trumpeter Eric Le Lann. Guttural experience, my stomach still remember it 15 years latter.
