- Probably the most psychedelic sonic experience The Windmill has experienced... this mad alien-ish thing is called Magma and it does things to brains that probably shouldn't happen...

I'm just out of theirs 50th anniversary concert, in Rennes Opera, and it was one of my best live experience ever
Meilleur groupe du monde
It took me three minutes to sober up enough to realize that I am looking at (I presume Italian) twins reacting to Christian Vander's Magma. Now my eyes are adjusted to what I am seeing
Close... we are Romanian, but I'm glad we have enough passion and fire in our veins to get you think of the country that gave us Pizza and Ferrari! Hope you enjoyed! /Andrei
Magma are by far our favorite band; we have seen them live many times. And trust us: Seeing them live is a spiritual experience, and we really mean this.
To see the full extent of what they can do you have to tackle one of their really long tracks. How about "Theusz Hamtaahk" (which, by the way, means "Time of Hatred" in Kobaïan), which is close to 35 minutes long? There is no studio version of this track, but this version from their 30th anniversary concert in 2000 is brilliant. ua-cam.com/video/m6p6-hWauK8/v-deo.html
I don't know if we'll ever tackle a song that long on the channel but people do seem to want more from them so maybe we get to hear more stuff. /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Their long tracks are definitely their best though. If only there were a live recording of Köhntarkösz Anteria, one of their longest songs (48 minutes in the studio version); the repeated "hallelujah" chants in the last 15 minutes would be absolutely awesome live. As to why they sing "hallelujah": All Magma albums are concept albums and belong together; they tell a "coherent" tale (well, at least as coherent as is possible with a band that claim to be from the planet Kobaïa), though not necessarily in order of appearance of the albums. In that part of the tale some people on Earth are brought enlightenment by a prophet and spontaneously break into "hallelujah".
Magma definitely took "concept album" to a new level by inventing not only a new musical style (Zeuhl) and a language the sing in (Kobaïan) but also by connecting all their albums for one huge concept. All in all this concept is about 10 hours of music; this includes all studio albums and the tracks that were only ever played live like "Theusz Hamtaahk" or "Retrovision".
If I die never having experienced Magma in person, my life will not have been as complete as I had hoped. Just a phenomenal band, in my personal group of bands that their output goes beyond music, into something deeper, something expansive.
Hope you get to see them! /Andrei
This piece (and it's just the end) is not representative of Magma's music nor of the Kobaïen, it is even an atypical piece in their repertoire. Try "Nono", "Maahnt", Zombies, or if you are not afraid of big pieces: Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh, Köhntarkösz, Zëss. We don't approach their music like a basic rock band. It's something else, and it takes time to adapt.
Wrote all these down. We love long songs but doing reactions for them is quite challenging so would probably go for shorter ones. /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses You could try "Nono". I hope this link works in your country: ua-cam.com/video/oy1L56YT6p8/v-deo.html
I don't think there is a "representative song" for Magma, but De Futura is one of the emblematic ones, don't you think ?
@@mescalineformule4 No, i dont think so. Listen to Magma's repertoire in its entirety, and point out a piece that has a similar form, you'll have a hard time."Zombies" perhaps... This piece is a composition by Jannik Top, while Magma's repertoire is strongly impregnated by Christian Vander, with certainly the recurring use of the ostinato, and the presence of this characteristic bass sound, but also on the other hand, more frequent changes of themes and keys and above all a lot of choirs and parts really sung. There are also instrumental parts, but in a different form.
@@mescalineformule4 Just to mention that this is one of the very few pieces not written by Vander but by Bassist Jannick Top before he left the band
Original Title was de futura Hiroshima
magma is the true heavy dark spiritual music. MAGMA ISS DEH HUNDIN! DA ZEUHL WORTZ MEKANIK!
Kobaiia iss de Hundin!
😂 One of my favorite bands. You definitely got thrown in the deep end with "De Futura", maybe Magma's most depraved song. Don't think I've ever seen this particular performance before, very cool.
If they have something more digestible I would be curious, but this was a PERFECT suggestion to make a good reaction video so much thank to Czargoroth! /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses 'Digestible' is a challenge for a band whose best-loved works are all 30+ minute "songs", but you might try "Hhai", an extract from their longer Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré suite that has often been performed live on its own.
@@sylvanm4216 Lemme rephrase that, more musical/melodic would be what I'm searching for. I love the long monster songs, I'm a prog nerd! /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses If you're interested in trying out a more extended piece, the 28-minute Félicité Thösz (from 2012) is probably the most lush & melodic of all their full-length compositions. Or, of course, there’s Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh, their most acclaimed work, first released in 1973, which is amazing but perhaps a rougher ride - and the canonical studio recording, unfortunately, suffers from a bad mix.
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Here's a great introductory video where you can get context about the band (French subtitles but the auto translate does a decet job) and a "light" version of "Hhai" :
ua-cam.com/video/S0GniNNSLAw/v-deo.html
Filmed at the recently rebuilt Piscine Molitor in Paris, a superb place that was closed in 1989, demolished in 2012 and rebuilt in 2014. Quite symbolic for a band that is rebirthing since more than 50 years.
Lol I love this band.
No offense but may I ask why? /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses For me it's probably mostly the prominent and unique use of bass and drum. I like how they introduce repetitive motifs that keep building up with interesting variations. Their sound is generally dark but in a jazzy and funky type of way, which I really enjoy. :)
@@plokky8052 that's one of the reasons I love them too! Jazzy, drum-centric, really unique and kinda spiritual...
@@plokky8052 As someony lucky said, the Music of Magma is like a never-ending sex, you won/t get tired of.
If you guys want a more melodic/lyric experience of Magma, you should react to this amazing live performance of Hhaï, where both the drummer and the bassist both outperforms themselves! : ua-cam.com/video/bYrHNLXwGe0/v-deo.html - The song Hhaï is "only" the first 15 minutes, as the whole video is a medley of 2 songs.
Less suitable for a reaction video (because it's 50 minutes long) but for your own curiosity/pleasure here is their carrier masterpiece Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh (MDK) in one of its best live recording session (for the band 30th birthday) : ua-cam.com/video/NoZIXPvHPoY/v-deo.html
Gotta be ready for a reaction to Magma haha a lot of people at first have trouble grasping it and getting into it. But it’s amazing music
Yeah, that's basically how I'd but it as well. They're incredible but my first thought is along the lines of "what the F*** is going on here???" /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses haha yeah exactly
Magma is one of the biggest bands I know. On the other hand, you have to enter the Magma's universe a little. And you have chosen a piece that is difficult to access without knowing their music.
Music so important and particular that she founded a style and created a label of her own: Zheul music.
It will be too bad if this experience does not encourage you to look further at Magma. You have to Try ! Try ! ;-)
I see people keep encouraging us to look into more. We will do so if time allows. /Andrei
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses You 200% should.
There is no any other band like Magma,
they created their own microcosm and you were send right into their Cycloning Void of Power, represented by their DeFutura.
Not the best place to start...
I love Magma, subscribed to your channel... ♥
Much Appreciated!
Oh dear I think I broke you guys with my suggestions 🤣🤣🤣 This is the total opposite of BiB, but I figured since you both love prog that you should try a taste of the early, avant-garde stuff! Their musicianship just blows my mind and the fact they still do this after decades is really incredible. You can hear more of their Kobaian language in other songs, I think it's based off of slavic and germanic languages. Thank you for reacting to this song-- it's super intense but I promise not all their music is like that!! lol
Oh don't sweat it, we've been broken long before you came in. But your suggestions were pleasant breakage for what it's worth! Can't say I totally enjoyed this one but I don't even know if that was its purpose tbh. It is very impressive though! If all their music was like this... I think I'd be concerned. Thanks for the suggestions! /Andrei
You should have had them watch KMX B12 or the solo by James Mac Gaw (RIP) from Kohntarkosz! This one: ua-cam.com/video/1eGgXa360-E/v-deo.html
@Peter Piper • 32 years ago. 😀ua-cam.com/video/4-3gkIe1oBs/v-deo.html
this piece was not composed by Vander as usual but by bassist Jannick Top who left the band around 74 and made a come back forthis concert.
He really created a new way of playing as a former cellist tuning is bass in fifth allowing unusual large gap between notes
Yeah we should try some different stuff. This one felt iffy at first. /Andrei
The original title was de futura hiroshima
I discovered them a little while ago, but I didn't go further specifically because they have that peculiar sounding. But this one, wow it sounds quite strange but really good at the same time, idk how to describe it. I loved it!!! I think I listen a little more x)
Well I'm glad you can get into them. Personally I am as filled with admiration as I am getting a headache... so I think I won't be looking further into them for the time being. /Andrei
Try this for a good introduction: ua-cam.com/video/-__nJgsLgAU/v-deo.html
What did I just listen to??😂
Am sooooo confused. It’s not something I will listen to in a regular basis, that’s for sure.. but that was quite.. impressive😅
The best part was your review really haha as always🤣💙
It's 70's psycho-tech-death OK??? Nah, I really dunno what to make of it... but it can certainly be labeled WEIRD!!! Was cool to react to it though! Thanks for watching and for being so awesome! /Andrei
It is ZEUHL!
@@davidlee4903 Da Zeuhl wortz mekanik!
Listening to magma while on shroom is probably the best experience to have.
Never tried shrooms. Wouldn't know. /Andrei
The greatest live experience in the universe
I recommend listening to the original studio version and the whole album Üdü wüdü (1976, or the remastered version 2020)...and turn the volume to the right ;-)
Wow that is as coherent of an album title as this music hehe! Thanks for the recommendation!
I know he saw him again last year two keyboards, 6 singers plus Christian the drummer go see magma…plus guitar, basse …
thx for your title because it's fucking true ! Kobaia rules forever !
Lol.. "All that was voluntary"!
Are you serious ? Nothing goes in this video reaction ! George's brain got disconnected, Alien's head, Mike Mangini's head, this super weird music, in short, A REAL MESS !!! LMAO 🤣🤣🤣 Thx for your job. 😊🤟 (Need reaction on "Doom", or "Dear Mother" with "12 Years In Exile" or "Vertigo")
We can't react to more Dear Mother cos WE KNOW THEM LOL.... Sorry about that. But I'm glad you like the catastrophic mess we made out of this one. /Andrei
5:02 you're right. Check out the live performance if Magma Retrovision, the chorus between 2:30 - 4:00. Then search for the original Return of the Jedi Victory Song (not the one from Special Editions). Magma came first. They have a big but mostly unknown influence on culture. Opeth, Porcupine Tree and even Metallica are fans.
it's not all vowels bro. it's was for this song that was writen by the bassist for the band
Oh man, and you guys only caught the tail end of this piece, in a rather brightened live version. Check out this relentless, crushingly dark studio version: ua-cam.com/video/HAkSVTDfBVE/v-deo.html (P.S. My understanding is that the piece is a bleak view of what awaits humanity if we carry on as we're doing....)
Yeah we know the full thing is much longer! Also don't even get me started on climate change... /Andrei
I realized something, I don't remember you reacting to shoegaze/post black-metal nor post rock songs, but I might missed them.
Anyway, I recommend you to listen to MOL - "Jord" it's un amazing song, from an amazing album by an amazing band. Same goes for the band Show Me a Dinosaur with titles like "Red River" or "Sunflower".
I think you might like it ;)
Take care!
This one hundred thousand times better than the Agonist on the shelf
no it isn't :)))) / George
You react to Magma? I subscribe, no questions.
Thank Czargoroth! She did it to us! Also thank for the sub! /Andrei
Nope, no way you can play that stuff on shroomz. You'll have to stay pretty straight to be able to cope with that drumming part. (Now you've said "psychosisness" so many times that I actually start believing it's an actual word. :-) )
We made it a word haha. Yeah that was pretty impressive, but it does seem to induce shroom-like behavior! / George
My only minor critique about this version is the insane tempo buries the sublties and groove on the bass part. Otherwise Psycho yes! Magma Rules.
Magma is known for it... they're the guys from the Hamburger Train, right?!
I dunno know what the Hamburger train is, but sounds like a place that would hire them as a live band! / George
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Hamburger Train is an ultra whacky song by the band Primus where the bassline is quite similrar to "deFutura". the intro is a PeeWee Herman line sampled from the Cheech and Chong movie "Nice Dreams".
ua-cam.com/video/-Ozfm0qE2F4/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/Ff-DqTerrnw/v-deo.html
Known for it is a Death Grips song where the "de Futura" bass line is sampled.
ua-cam.com/video/HtbAgynP8iY/v-deo.html
Beware about the WTF level of all these videos.
I definitely got those space ship in the 70's vibes from listening to this. That said, I don't think I'll be looking further into this particular band, lol.
Please do! They have amazing beauty, as well! ua-cam.com/video/u8Q2b0t5wFw/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/nqKMuLFrP1c/v-deo.html
Satanic moment jaja...good react
I heard the soundtrack of any David Linch movie.
This made me feel schizophrenic
I guess mission accomplished? /Andrei
Zombies.
Ur reaction is really LOL
try some Oxbow!
Dear friends, never NEVER combine fast and slow stimulants at the same time.
Instead you'll get something like this.
Also, HAMATAI!
And yes, without any irony, Magma has A LOT of JAZZ-TECH-DEATH metal vibes, they are just very well molten into all the other multiple things in their music, that are happening in the same time.
About the song, thah language and whole concept behind this piece...
1) De Futura (Hiroshima) was invented and offered by their bassist at 1975-76 Janik Top, yes this funny dude in leather jacket and round black glasses.
2) Whole song is based on single base riff and single singing diftong BÖ!
So the riff is cycled in major phrasing structures ended by caesuras.
And the ever repeated syllable BÖ! is annoyingly repeated over and over in all possible ways until they melt together with that monstrous bass riff into something that will haunt you for a looooong time.
3) Jainck Top is master-level bassist and had played with almost all major french artists at the time, for example check his mighty bass lines in famous Didier Morouani SPACE project: ua-cam.com/video/tUplu2U9MAw/v-deo.html
4) Janik heavy and technically challenging style influenced Magma's sound a lot, so sometimes they sound like real thech-death from 70ths.
5) Also Jannic brought to concept table of Magma new idea of Orks - an lifeform that is indistinguishable between human and machine. They are far technically advanced, but very narrow minded, that's why their lexicon is based on a few syllables and this is why they are chanting this damn BÖ! all the time.
6) There is no official myth behind De Futura, although there are many interpretations. In my very own vision, De Futura is a moment of time loop, when Kontharkozs was sent from the past to change the future, but his interference created the time-cycle itself. Kobayans destroying Earth in the original finale of MDK and Kontharkozs was sent by Enemteth-Re to prevent this catastrophic event. But in the end, Earth will be destroyed anyway by the Thermonucler weapon of Kobaiia and so He will/was be sent again to prevent this futile repercussions. So, the Theusz Hamthaak (The Times of Hatred) is encapsulated in the never-ending spiral of violence and death comdemned to eternity. And in the very end, only the comming of transcendental being of ZESS by the holy will of Kreuhn Korman cuts this cycle and proclaims The End of All Times and things: ua-cam.com/video/xCF9-k_LnOg/v-deo.html
Wow... that's a lot! Thanks for all the info! I hadn't pulled the BÖ out of the mix. Story is quite compelling too, sounds like something I'd watch as a sci-fi movie! It also sounds creepy enough for this soundtrack / George
Magma fans please stop apologising.
I mean it’s not a harsh intro. Was the first thing I heard. It’s astounding.
4:57 worst experiencie in my life.
I guess sorry... but also not really!
