Great video. The funny thing about "weird" music like this is that many people believe that the ones get the music just enjoys the "weirdness" but i'm telling you the further in you go in the rabbit hole in music like this you hear that everything just is really banging like any other more normal music out there. It's just that it is an aquired taste. I love everything about this song but for example the synth at 2:55 is fucking killer.
Magma are their own genre yes. That said, others have followed in a genre called zeuhl.
Thanks for doing them agai - they're truly unique and pioneering.
The same friends who brought over Renaissance and Gryphon back in HS brought over Magma and VdGG😮Prog is definitely not a type but rather a lack of having a type that means freedom to explore and create more than others!

One of the heaviest drum performances I've ever heard, and for Magma that's saying a lot. I've always really loved this tune, it has an anthemic and uplifting quality that is oh-so Magma. Interestingly, it was written not by Christian Vander, but by veteran Magma bassist Bernard Paganotti, who had a fascinating collection of solo records himself.
This is one of the most Zappa-esque tracks that Magma did. Th composer of this piece (bassist Bernard Paganotti) went on to form his own Zeuhl band Weidorje, and they sound quite Zappa-esque too.
That little opening bit, just before this song, reminds me of Patrick Watson's "Beijing" (the only music piece I know that uses a bicycle as a musical instrument). The main song is good. I wouldn't turn it off but I am not certain I enjoy it enough to seek it out. Having said that, it may well be a grower, especially in context of the rest of the album.... Patrick Gauthier!!! Go listen to his "Bebe Godzilla". You can thank me later.
Live performances by Magma are tenfold better than the records! The music is alive and is allowed to breathe and express in the live setting. It’s incredible
Magma's trance-like qualities are what drew me to them. So lucky to have seen them twice. If you accept it, and let it, this music will take you somewhere and you don't even need psychedelics. I'm also with all the suggestion of doing Theusz Hamtaahk... the Retrospectiw version. Also Patrick Gauthier solo album Bebe Godzilla has some good tracks too.
No, the "Theusz Hamtaahk" version from the "Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogie" live album from 2001 is in my opinion better. And it has the advantage that it can be seen on video; I gave the link in my direct reply to Justin.
Let the Magma flow! Have to go home and get my Kobaian dictionary. Let the Zeuhl rule! Christian Vander, a classically trained drummer made up the back story, a language (Kobaian), and invented a new music genre( Zeuhl)! I have been listening to a German group from the same era this week called Aera, their album Humanum Est.just ropes me in! Peace from the old hippie farmer.

The sound of the big craching cymbal that scans the track at halfway is not coming from the drums but from two big metal plates that were thrown at full speed one again each other .

So the 2nd track of eclectic Udu Wudu is...something completely different!
The first minute presents somehow abrupt and incoherent typical Magma's vocal chant.
As if there should be something like 10 minutes with steadily evolving musical themes, that leads to...2:19 freaking great gentle and tender break!
Oh, such an amazing and unique zeulh-bass sound!
Here it rocks, but rocks very softly, almost like a waves coming to your feet at shoreline.
2:58 the very same bass now takes more power, but still if fluffy and brain-melting.
I can't get the feeling every time while listening to this track, I am standing at the center of captain's bridge of some interdimensional space-ship.
Before the bass get strength, the engines accumulates energy and crew talked in commands to prepare.
At 2:19 the amount of energy accumulates...and then at 2:58 wraps time and space!
While I am still standing at the very center and admire the unseen colors of other dimensions.
The strong side of this track is tight,gentle but steady evolving rhythm.
The weak side is that it leads...nowhere.
In the end track just repeats itself and fades without proper resolution.
Once again: great concept, not so great presentation...
I got to see Magma in Austin TX a few years ago. I never dreamed I'd ever get to see them live. Got me a cool t-shirt and everything.
There is also another Zehul band called Weidorje worth checking out too.... love Magma.

Indeed. Weidorje's music is very similar to that of Magma. As I recall it comprises a few members of Magma

@@hubertvancalenbergh9022 By the time the album came out, I was a great fan of Magma and had seen them several times. I got the album as soon as I could find it in the shops. I loved Paga as well as the other bassists. Amazing musicians.
The band that totally changed my ideas in music. I saw them in 1975 and was blown away. Amazing musicians and singers. Glad you are getting interested in them. Next up "De Futura", I hope. May I suggest "No No" as a short song. However the longer pieces are brilliant.
Pointless info : "over the coals" can be translated by "sur des charbons ardents" in French, and it's often true with Magma (not surprising with their name, they deliver!).
About Bernard Paganotti : he's mainly a bassist (somewhat like Leland Sklar in the US for singers who want la crème de la crème in their recordings) who made a few albums with his own formation, Paga Group. "King for a day" gives some of the epicness of Magma music and is very interesting about how personally he's playing his bass.
Ah yes, the underlying serenity of firey coal beach dancing. That sounds about right.

The sole album by Weidorje (Magma off-shoot band) is killer stuff, a top-notch entry in the Zeuhl universe. There’s a track called “Vilna” which I think is brilliant compositionally (I think written by keyboardist Patrick Gauthier).
You can see why Jodorowsky wanted Magma for his Dune adaptation..

Christian Vander decided that the French language was too soft to express the intensity of the music so he invented Kobaïan, which is based on Germanic languages. There are dictionaries on the web which translate most of the words. However, the meaning of the words is not important, it is the force behind them. The "Theusz Hamtaahk" live DVD is a must have album.
The ending of track 1 was shirley Sufjan Stevens’ inspiration circa Come on feel the Illinoise.
Track 2 reminds me of Zappa vocally - so refreshing. Magma are this channels dark horses

The whole album is great, especially the long track "De Futura", the only track on side 2. There are two dances on this album: "Tröller Tanz" which means "Dance of the Trolls" ("Tanz" is actually the German word for "Dance"; some vocabulary from Earth apparently made it into Kobaïan). The other is "Zombies", which is described as being a "Ghost Dance". At some point in the song you reacted to they sing "Zebëhn dë Ğeuštaah", which is a shortened version of the Kobaïan name of Christian Vander (the full name is "Zebëhn Straïn dë Ğeuštaah").
Justin, you definitely should do a reaction to a live video of Magma on a long song Saturday. We highly recommend the track "Theusz Hamtaahk" (Kobaïan for "Time of Hatred"). It is from a movie of the 30th anniversary concert of Magma that is over two hours long, but they play only three tracks, the complete "Theusz Hamtaahk" trilogy (the other two tracks are "Ẁurdah Ïtah" meaning "Dead Earth" and "Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kommandöh"). This movie is Zeuhl at its very best.
The reason why we especially recommend this track is because there is no studio version of it, and this is in our opinion the best live version. We give you the link below; since it is the opening of the movie the first 90 seconds show the band backstage and the audience entering. The whole clip is a bit over 36 minutes long. It is thus the shortest track of the trilogy; the other two are way above the 40 minutes mark.

Just for fun the names of all 14 musicians that played in this concert (in the first track only 8, for the second track 2 singers were added, for the last track they also added a 4-piece brass section, so all 14 musicians played. 5 musicians don't have Kobaïan names, so they are apparently guest musicians. My Grandma on my mother's side was Irish and emigrated to the USA while being pregnant with my mother, without a father. She used the Irish Gaelic version "deoch". She was wiccan, smoked a pipe and could out-cuss and out-drink a sailor. She often had to babysit me and cursed me all the time with things like "ye dirty lil brat; I'll chain ye in the cellar where ye'll have ta live on mildewed bread an' brackish water". She wouldn't have hurt a hair on my head though, and I very well knew it. I loved her dearly.

This live version of Theusz Hamthaak is hell of a ride!
So many truly magnificent moments, but one that always does shivers go down my spine is parallel yet separate duo-chanting of Vander and Blasquitz!

Yes, it gets hypnotic in the end. The vox becomes "rhythm vox" instead of lead, and a thin little thread of less wide-ranging melody moves onto the synths, almost in the background. (I like it when the dynamic parts of a song go almost inaudible like this. I think maybe it's because it sometimes is one of those things kept for you to discover on your tenth listening - if you're like me, anyway.) However, in the beginning there's a whole lot more melody than you usually get in a song from after the 1950's, on, so it's not as if it's all the peace of the alien chanting. I agree about the sense of peace (and yet intensity) it brings. It has the same effect on me. You describe it perfectly.
If you make it through to the end of this one, you have De Futura to look forward to at the end.
And if you do do it all, when you get to Zombies, it might be better to look for one of the live versions. Either that, or don't decide whether or not you like it based just on the album. Magma, live, is often almost a whole new song. (If you start trying out the various versions of MDK, you'll find that is very much the case with that song. Christian Vander changes it really freely, and doesn't try to stick to just "one canonical version". I suppose that's partly from his being classically trained, where the old songs are forever changing in new performances. Or like jazz - think of Coltrane's _Favorite Things_ compared to others, for instance.)
Magma have a few songs that simply don't have studio versions. Just before COVID they finished a project to make a studio recording for one of their longer live pieces. Mental decripitude means I can't think of the name right now.

You probably mean "Šlaǧ Tanƶ" which was released in 2015. And yes, a lot of tracks never made it on studio albums, most notably "Theusz Hamtaahk".

I feel completely alien to the musical universe of Vander and his band. Magma's music makes me feel like I've gone through the washing machine or been indoctrinated into a cult of lunatics (which isn't that far from reality !). This piece is less overloaded than usual but it still puts as much emphasis on repetitiveness and incantatory singing.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but Bernard Paganotti and Patrick Gauthier formed a band called Weidorje which released a one-off album (self-titled) in the zeuhl genre. If you like Magma, this is well worth seeking out as it is superior to side 1 of Udu Wudu, in my opinion.

This is the first of your Magma videos I’ve dipped into and after a few minutes I’m hightailing it out before the headache sets in. Enjoy all you Magma fans but it’s not for me.

Jeez, i just can't catch a break these days..... First min of so marginally more interesting than the initial track this album. But just after reminded me of the old days when your needle would stick on the record, then it just got repetitive, and tedious.
I either find Magma to be too repetitive, or too intense and layered for too long. Am I a picky prog fan? Yeah, but that's kinda the point lol.
