His song "Amsterdam " was nicely translated in English bye Mort Schuman (Who wrote sonngs for Elvis Presley) and became one of the best from David Bowie. "Ne me quitte pas " was sung by Nina Simone. J.Brel lived in the Maldives islands, piloting his own twin-motor plane to help people for free.

If you liked it you must absolutely react to his most famous piece which is "Ne me quitte pas", a song translated into many languages and interpreted by many international artists.
Brel wrote real poetry and was an extraordinary interpreter, a point of reference for many singers of the 60s.

Jacques Brel exceptionnal and unique figure of the French songs! He is a real artistic performer and can be compared to the Shakesperean actors like Richard Harris, Richard Burton or Peter O'Toole (all of Irish origins) who owe their celebrity to USA. For French people, Belgians are our dearest direct cousins...Jacques Brel performed in the famous Don Quichotte, a famous musical show in Broadway and film (with Peter O'Toole) He created and sang "The impossible Dream" (La Quête" in French). Great creation full of philosophical meanings... He has always been gratefull to France and the French audience who launched his artitical career. His best friends were of course french artists. Died of a cancer in the french islands Marquises. A French national symbol as other artists (also of foreign origins). Also listen to "Le plat pays" or "Amsterdam" or "Les Flamandes"...

Honnêtement une des plus belles chansons de Brel en français. Il faut la ressentir. Amsterdam et Ne me quitte pas sont « juste » plus connues. This song is talking about the belgian life (really long time ago).

Hello Bro.I'm French and as a French I've to say that your reaction made me very happy.Jacques Brel was a real good singer, dead too young. As you can see in this video,on stage he was an amazing performer,he lived his own songs very intensly.I invite you to found his last record performed a few months before passing away, the title "ORLY" where you can listen to marvellous tracks, above all one of the best song in french (form me) "Les Marquises". In this record J Brel put his last forces and his soul, and the strength of the lyrics combined with a great musical orchestration made an unforgettable result.AMAZING!!!!!! I hope you read me and i send you kindly regards from South France. Soon to listen for a new reaction about french singers ,alot deserving your interest.

Dear Canada, Brel was almost unknown in Belgian when he started to make shows in a small cabaret. Just as Brassens, Ferré and others (born in Monaco) at that time... Other artists and actors born in Belgian or from any country from any continents became well-know since they performed in Paris. Just travel in Europe and ask anyone how many artists from abroad succeeded to flourish theit talents and became famous since they crossed the French frontier! In USA there is New York. In Europe here is Paris...

    Those People
    First of all…
First of all, there’s the eldest
    He’s a complete pea-brain
    He’s got a big nose
And doesn’t even know his name
    He’s Mr. Drinks-A-Lot
    Or rather, Mr. Always Drunk
He does nothing with his ten fingers
But it’s not like he can anyway
    He, who’s totally sloshed
    And thinks himself a king
    Who gets wasted every night
    With cheap, crappy wine
But you’ll find him in the morning
    In the sleepy town church
    Stiff as an awning
And white as an Easter candle
On top of that, he babbles
And he’s got a lazy eye
    I gotta tell ya, sir
    That with those people
    They don’t think, sir
    They don’t think...they pray!
And then there’s the other one
    That lousy carrot-top
He’s never even seen a comb
And he’s a vile little worm
    Even though he claims
He’d give the shirt off his back
    He got married to Denise
    A girl from the city
    Well, actually from another city
    And that’s not all -
He goes and does his little business
    With his little hat
    And his little coat
    And his little car!
He’d like to think he’s a big shot
But he really isn’t at all
You can’t play at being rich
When you haven’t got a dime
    I gotta tell ya, sir
    That with those people
    They don’t live, sir
    They don’t live...they cheat!
And then there are the other ones
    The mother who says nothing
    Either that or total nonsense
    From evening until morning
    Coming from her “saintly” face
And in a little wooden frame
    She’s got Father’s mustache -
He died when he slipped and fell
And she watches as her herd
    Gobbles down cold soup
And they make a big SLURP!
And they make a big SLURP!
And then there’s the little old one
    Who never stops shaking
And they’re waiting for her to die
Since she’s got all the dough
    They don’t even listen
To what her poor hands are telling them
    I gotta tell ya, sir
    That with those people
    They don’t chat, sir
    They don’t chat...they count!
    And then, and then…
    And then there’s Frida!
Who’s as beautiful as the sun!
And she even loves me back!
    Oh, how I love Frida!!
We even say to each other a lot
    That we’ll have a house
    With a bunch of windows
    And almost no walls
    And we’ll live in it
And it’ll do us good to be there
    But it’s not a certainty
    It’s still a maybe...
Because the others don’t want that-
Because the others don’t want that!
    The others, they keep saying
That she’s too pretty for me!
And that all I’m good for
    Is slitting cats’ throats!
    I’ve NEVER killed a cat!!
Well, maybe a long time ago…
    Or maybe I’ve forgotten…
    Or maybe they smelled bad.
In the end, they don’t want that
Sometimes when we see each other
Pretending like they don’t say that on purpose
    With her teary eyes
    She says she’ll leave them
    She says she’ll follow me
    And so, for a moment
    Only for a moment…
    I do believe her, sir!
    For a moment…
    Only for a moment…
    Because with those people
    Sir, you can’t leave
    You can’t ever leave, sir
    You can’t ever leave
    Now it’s getting late, sir
    I need to go...back home

Bravo Monsieur!

In this song, Jacques Brel paints a guy who randomly talks to a stranger ("Sir") he has met in a bar, late at night. The stranger is the viewer. He talks about his desperate and failing love with the blonde Frida, who belongs to a very traditional family of Wallony.
He first paints his disdain for this family ("ces gens-là", aka "these people"), and caricatures each main character in that family, all the perceived mediocrity of what seems to be a christian working class or middle class environment. Then (perhaps a bit drunk) he shows his passionate dream of leaving with Frida, but soon, he reminds himself that the Frida's family opposes their union. With that, he says farewell to the stranger and goes home.

The only other performer of the same era that I know who could compare with Jacques Brel in terms of stage presence and intensity is James Brown.
The most crazy thing about Brel is he had awful stage fright before getting on stage : he often vomited just before his concerts, but when getting in front of the audience he became possessed.
