  • Paul Buitink talks to John Mearsheimer, a renowned American political scientist and international relations scholar who belongs to the realist school of thought. He is a Professor at the University of Chicago.
John gives an overview of what offensive realism is. Furthermore he discusses the European Union's foreign policy and how dependent it is on that of the US. He explains Russia's strategy and how Ukraine is going to lose with severe negative consequences for Europe and NATO.
He also gives his view on the tensions between US and China and how the situation in the Middle East could spiral out of control.
At the end John discusses the strength of the dollar and how in general things will get worse across the world before they get any better.

I love it! I appreciate his honesty and I’m gonna admit that my least favorite people to interact with nowadays are those who willfully IGNORE reality bc it makes them feel bad. They think it’s negative and they want to hear some positive things. I wish those people would grow up and accept the negative. That’d be the most positive thing I could think of - cowards and fools accepting reality. Learning information and facts that aren’t “positive”.
That would be the most positive change or news I could think of.

I’m so sick of the people who say things are too negative and not positive enough. Why don’t people just ask themselves “is it true?” and then suck it up like an adult?
Why do so many people have this idea that they’re supposed to go through life avoiding negative information? Where did these pathetic cowards get the idea that you can ignore reality if it’s too negative for you?
I see it everywhere all the time with weak men and almost all women. “It’s too negative”.

And it doesn't need any more lands. It needs more PEOPLE, that's why it's liberating the Russian people of Ukraine. Along with the lands where their ancestors have lived for centuries. It would be simply unfair to leave their lands to Ukraine just because they were transferred to "Ukrainian SSR" when that "SSR" was a part of USSR.
The lies about "Russian imperialism" would be laughable if they wouldn't be a base of conflict escalation and couldn't lead to a global war.

I honestly don't understand why Biden is literally forcing a China-Russia-Iran alliance against America.

Exactly. There is ntn baltic states have that Russia needs. That’s the reason for having no interest to invade other countries. Not only America doesn’t afraid not to get attacked. Russia also knows that it won’t be ever seriously attacked with having the most developed nuclear weapons and contemporary weapons. Professor is not being truly realistic on that. And spreading a little bit more pro-American point of view. Russia just as like China pretty much a hegemony on their part of the planet.

The interviewer thinking the bombing of the Iranian consulate having generals as even conceivably a valid act of self defense, is truly crazy and a wonder of propaganda success. It is routine for consulates all around the world to safely allow strategists to discuss confidentially foreign relations matters including military topics. They are considered territory of the host and strictly protected under international law. There are military discussions in US consulates all around the world - and daily. If North Korea didn’t like the subject of possible discussions in a US consulate in Australia, and blew it up along with its 14 people and some important US generals, and then a journalist said “But North Korea had a point, as there were likely discussions not friendly to North Korea about expanding AUKUS” then the journalist would be considered insane. How far does our propaganda have to go for it to be considered normal for Israel to blow up.a Iranian consonilate. Crazy times.

This is a very poor analysis. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
If I see one guy attack another guy on the street and start punching him, I can decide not to step into the conflict and say that I'm not getting involved in that fist fight while still maintaining that I think it will be bad if the first guy ended up knocking out the second guy and I'm going to give him some tips.
To say that NATO or NATO countries are not direct combatants in the war doesn't preclude the fact that they may very much have an interest in the direction of the war. This is pretty basic politics.

As long as US does not interfere in their affairs then there will be peace. China has been very patient and if it wants, it can just embargo Taiwan and that would be disastrous to Taiwan but the Chinese are not that ruthless. No the majority of Chinese and the Taiwanese are not that silly to fight among themselves so that the US MIC can benefit. Ask any Taiwanese and they will tell you that US foreign policies are divisive. For MIC to perpetually make their profits , they will have to create imagery enemies. There are Russian speaking people, among them are ethnic Ukrainians because Ukraine was part of the USSR with Russian as the state language. Other ethnic languages, including Ukrainian, were suppressed in the USSR. It was one of the reasons why the Soviet Union collapsed and people voted for independence. As a French man, I have to object that many, many people are quite fed up with having the leaders of Europe just following US's interests like pets. France has built a defense of its own at great expanse if you consider the very small country that it is regarding Russia, China or indeed the USA. We do have nuclear power, and whilst the Germans did rest under US umbrella and invested in its industry France has build its own fighter plane, special forces, submarines, etc. So I m afraid NO the French claim to have a difference with US's foreign policy, and you shall see the extend of it in the next European elections. Remember, in 2005 the French voted NO to further Eu integration under NATO rule, and it took a betrayal from Sarkosy to overthrow the vote.

I don't want an integrated European military, because first I have zero interest in fighting for countries like Ukraine, or Poland, or Romania, whose feat has been to suck EU money (which came mostly from US, Germany and the UK) to get enough infrastructures so they could take all the industry WE used to have in France; and second I prefer everybody to have a defense of its own, it never prevented us to fight together when needed without having to be enlisted in wars that does NOT concern us. The EU plans to add Georgia, Albania and other countries, when will it end ? Do we French have to be the nuclear umbrella for all these guys ? If USA leaves Europe, the old European conflicts (for instance Hungary vs Romania on Transylvania, the disfunctionnal state of Bosnia and Herzegovina that threats to fall apart at any moment or the Kosovo issue) will emerge and given the fact that Europeans will have to handle these old conflicts and will have different opinions on them, tensions would slowly rise and the union would fall apart and be replaced by the old system.

European countries have formed military and political alliances for centuries before the US even existed, and the idea that getting rid of NATO would take European states to compete with each other is just not true, EU states would be forced to form new alliances with each other as they did in the past, and btw such alliances would be more fruitful and stable than the ones exist today because they would be between countries with similar cultures, interests, and points of view, not like current EU were you have countries with completely different economic mindsets, cultures, and interests forced to exist under the same umbrella i.e. Greece and the Netherlands.

As long as the dollar is the default currency for world trade it is not easy to circumvent it: your trading partners will not accept other currencies because their partners also want dollars. And the dollar will remain the default currency for a long time because there is no replacement - the euro is big enough but the euro zone is an unstable construct, the yen is small and the renmibi is not fully convertible due to Chinese capital controls. (The ruble is both small and not fully convertible) Maybe one day the Indian rupee could replace it if and when India becomes rich and a global power. But that's quite far.

@@mark_2 To be the reserve currency the country of the currency needs to have a large economy so that the money supply is also large but beyond that its share in world trade is irrelevant. As the US is certainly big enough, its share in world trade is not hugely important because it is not only the US trade that counts.
It would be impossible or at least very costly for trading partners/banks to have on stock all the world’s currencies. Eg assume that the Saudi oil company sells oil to 50 other small countries (bunch of African and Asian small countries) It is not possible that each of these trades happen in 50 different currencies or in the Saudi currency. Even if it were possible it is inefficient and costly. Take a Saudi - Ethiopia transaction as an example : there is no liquid market for the Saudi - Ethiopian currencies. However there is a liquid market between the Saudi currency and the dollar as well as between the Ethiopian currency and the dollar. So they price the contract in dollars, which makes the trade possible: the Ethiopians can get USD for their currency, buy the oil and the saudis can change back the received USD to Saudi currency.
This the point: the status of the dollar as a reserve currency is not directly dependent on the share of the US in world trade because trades not involving the US also need a reserve currency as a medium. Only the currencies of big economies can play this role (but their share of world trade is not critical). The only three big enough currencies are the USD, renminbi and the euro but the latter two cannot be reserve currencies for the reasons mentioned (instability for euro, lack of full convertibility for the renminbi)

Russia had nuclear sites staged in Ukraine like how the United States has them staged in South Dakota.

I agree with J Mearsheimer that there is no higher authority a country could seek help should one is attacked. However, that does not mean if one is powerful, one needs to boss other countries around like USA.
One mistake the West makes is it is judging China by its own standards. The West just could not accept China is only interested in developing its own country; being a hegemony has never been China's ambition. Just study China's history.

So much wrong here. The US does not dictate the foreign policy of European states. Prime example France during the Iraq war. Realism over simplifies international relations and really could only be applied to the early ages of sovereign nations.

Exactly. The reserve currency status will increasingly depend on the global south accepting it as such. There does not have to be a reserve currency. This is just projecting a very short historical anomaly - first the British pound and then the US Dollar - and assuming this will continue forever.
