Sekiro is a fascinating game because there is always a moment somewhere around Genichiro on top of Ashina Castle in the beginning where the game just *clicks* and you think about the game entirely differently. Before then the game is very, very frustrating because you can feel something isn't working right, then you finally slip into place like a square peg in a square hole and the game becomes the best game you've ever played.
Bloodborne was my first souls game. And I think I spent almost 5 hours in central yharnam just exploring and looking for stuff. Gungyr was my first tutorial boss. And I still remember my surprise (a pleasant one) that I could see that he is slow and not that difficult, it was just me making mistakes. That fight was *fair*. And that realization made me play a lot of DS3. And play the whole DS series. And Elden Ring. And now I dream about Bloodborne on PC much more than before.
Honestly I consider the grafted scion the tutorial boss in Elden ring. Yeah it really teaches you what you need to know. Plus if you do die you do end up getting a chance to get revenge later.
I think Soldier Of Godrick was a joke from Fromsoft to the hardcore fanbase lol giving you that as the official tutorial boss and then slapping horsey boy right outside the door when you think you're okay
Awesome Vid man but I think the real Tutorial Boss in Bloodborne is Gascoigne because Cleric Beast is optional. The Cleric beast teaches you how huge beast-like Enemies are like and Gascoigne teaches you stuff like how to Parry and dodge effectively and his beast Phase is a bit of a shocker ngl but anyway Congrats on 100K subs
Gundyr is the perfect tutorial boss for me. Simple, yet not laughably easy for newbies the same way Asylum Demon or Soldier of Godrick is. Introduces the concept of phase 2 very well with the transformation and complete moveset switch, but also makes it obvious how a bigger size and higher damage is not always an advantage. I think its the perfect balance of being epic but noob-friendly enough so it won't discourage completely new players. Last Giant lacked that extra kick to the fight for me, Asylum Demon is more of a gimmick than anything, and Soldier of Godrick is just a basic enemy with a healthbar.
Why did you only show Firelink Shrine area as DS3 tutorial area, but not the area before Iudex where you learn different mechanics and can optionally fight the ravenous crystal lizard, even though the game tells you to turn back?
First time in elden rings tutorial I went in and expected a real boss, especially after you die to that harder one, and then soldier of godrick enters a couple seconds later that was just the biggest bruh moment
Sekiro's tutorial area is fantastic! It was my second Souls game and I absolutely loved the gameplay right from the start You sneak past some samurai. You eavesdrop on them. You learn how to stealth. Damn, what more do you want? It's beautiful!
To be fair, Cleric Beast is an optional boss, making Father Gascoigne the true first boss in a way, and imo he's another perfect first boss just like Iudex. Great at teaching you the core mechanics/playstyle of the game: being aggressive and parrying with firearms
I believe the tutorial boss is supposed to show you what the rest of the bosses are supposed to feel like and no boss does that better than last giant for good or ill
Last Giant is way better than Asylum Demon, especially with the build up in Forest of Fallen Giants. In terms of story, it's really good. You feel like you are learning the story of this region you are wandering through, then you face off against a wounded creature that is assumed to be the last of its kind, and it attacks you in what seems like a desperate attempt to crush any potential threats to itself, but in reality, you learn much later that you are the person who put this creature in its current position, and it wasn't just some lowly, desperate animal trying to survive... it was once a King. There are other reasons I like it for its contribution to the story, but that'd take a lot. For gameplay, it feels a bit lacking in its movements, but it's such a colossal monster trying to crush an ant. I think it is reasonably challenging given that it is in a visibly weakened state, yet its size is still used to its advantage. I like that it has an attack where it tries to fall on you ,but i feel like that is way too rare (and easily punishable). It's relatively easy for players who survive the initial couple hours, but challenging enough to prepare them for the following bosses (Pursuer especially). Shigenori was just a mini-boss, and a basic one at that. I wouldn't consider him the tutorial boss. Genichiro on the other hand is. Genichiro is pretty cool. I like that he isn't challenging enough to slay you within 30 seconds, but at the same time, I don't think he should do as much damage as he does in the tutorial if they are trying to teach you about the unblockable attacks. If the player could take 1 or 2 more blows before dying, it'd help the new players better understand the danger of certain attacks. Still a good introductory boss though, if a little too difficult. Vanguard Demon I can pretty much say the same. It hits a little too hard in the tutorial, but it even easier to predict the attacks of... It's a good learning tool for pattern recognition, but again, being a 1-2 hit kill will render most players dead within the first 15 seconds if they are going into the fight a little too eager. Asylum Demon, I don't particularly like due to it being the easiest tutorial boss of the bunch, but its visual design and gameplay are intimidating enough that new players will struggle to focus. I like that the drop-attack does a decent chunk of its health, letting the player know they are ready, and can be a morale boost. Cleric Beast in terms of gameplay is a perfect introduction to fighting large enemies. It isn't punishing enough to kill you easily even in your first fight, but it is durable enough to withstand some punishment which means the player would need to learn some patterns to last long enough to defeat it, i.e. a couple minutes or so. It's appropriately challenging after the trials the player needed to go through to reach the Great Bridge, and it is very unique to all of the other enemies in most of the game... Gascoigne was less interesting imho. Didn't mean to go on a rant lol. Soldier of Go--wut? If anything, the Grafted Scion or Margit should be used. Margit is excellent. Great challenge for a first-timer, the boss and arena each present different threats to the player, etc. Grafted Scion is cool, but it is similar to Vanguard and Genichiro in doing way too much damage and being thrown at the player too early. Still neat. For areas imo: Undead Asylum felt very jank, but i still liked it for the most part. Idk, it must just be the visuals. Thing's Betwix is beautiful, but the scattered fog-wall rooms were weird and might scare new players who thinks a boss could be behind some of them. I like the concepts they prepare you for, and how you get rewarded with the Ladle by exploring the entire area and lighting the braisers. entire Cemetery of Ash area (including right outside Firelink) was weird. It looked cool, but i don't like it. It's also really weird how they disconnect it from the main game despite, unlike Undead Asylum, it is right next to Lothric. Central Yharnam is the best tutorial area. So many nooks and crannies, and alternate routes (3 ways to go through it to reach Gascoigne). It was insane how I got lost the first time I played and I stayed in Central Yharnam until the middle of my 2nd session. Cave of Knowledge is pretty good. Idk how people can miss it. It takes place in a pretty well-lit cave and is a nice introduction to the smaller dungeons of the game. But unfortunately, the enemies are not interesting, outside of Godrick's soldiers... but one of them being the boss is quite pathetic considering there's only 1 other boss in the game at that level of quality and difficulty.
I do appreciate the fragrant branch of yore statue in the tutorial for trying to teach players about the item but as far as I know its not worth using it at that statue, especially since In OG Ds2 there wasn't a statue there and for some reason they added another one blocking the path to fight the sentinels In SOTFS, making it possible to get stuck for a bit as you scramble to find or buy another branch if you decided to use one at the tutorial statue
Honestly, as much as I love the soldier of God memes, I think Margit should have been classified as the tutorial boss. He teaches you to use your tools, teaches you you can't always block (IE phase 2), makes you be cautious of not just the boss, but also the arena, and he shows you to use talismans after the fight if you haven't figured it out yet.
I absolutely despise Soldier of God memes for this exact reason, they get in the way of actual intellectual discussions about game design just to regurgitate the same joke souls fans have been making since pinwheel, and trust me, ten years of hearing the same joke with [insert weakest boss of newest fromsoft game] gets REALLY fucking grating.
Loving your channel and content and I would like to express some suggestions for your videos tier list: Ranking the games from worst to best based on art direction, atmosphere/world design and combat. Would be really fun
my friend died to soldier of godrick twice. also I don’t think it’s necessarily D rank because it teaches new players how to actually attack a npc, since the only npcs they’ll see are the horse guy (which won’t teach anything) and the boss your supposed to die to. So it allows you to properly fight an enemy that does counterattack and is stun able. That’s just how I felt anyways since ER was my first souls-born (played ds1 and sekiro so far)
i think its worth mentinoning that the last giant is one of three possible first bosses you can fight the other two being the dragon rider and dragon slayer
There's actually ten of them: -The Last Giant -The Pursuer -Dragonrider -Old Dragonslayer -Royal Rat Vanguard -The Rotten -Scorpioness Najka -Twin Dragonriders -Darklurker -Aava, the King's Pet
My list would be: S: Iudex Gundyr, DeS tutorial area, DS2 tutorial area A: Asylum Demon, DS3 tutorial area, DS1 tutorial area. B: Vanguard Demon, (Grafted Scion,) Sekiro boss and tutorial area C: Soldier of Godrick and ER tutorial area (just too easy) D: DS2 tutorial boss, Bloodborne tutorial boss and area. (Don't exist.)
Last Giant is not a tutorial Boss, he is just usually the first boss you fight. DS2 doesn't have a tutorial boss. It is slightly more open ended that way.
@@ryanvandoren1519 Not what I said mate. He could be the first boss you fight, or you could fight Dragon Rider or Orenstein first. Heck you could fight Aava the pet of the King first. Either way, being the first boss you encounter doesn't mean it is part of a developer manufactured tutorial area. He is not a tutorial boss, and judging him as one obviously nets him in a low tier.
@@YasonYou Counterpoint: Last Giant is the first boss you're reasonably supposed to fight, therefore *for the purpose of this video*, he should count as the tutorial boss. Also as a side-note, I got the impression that this tier list hadn't been created by Ember himself anyway, judging by the confusion he had with the ordering of the images and how he couldn't recognize all of them easily.
@@martinwagner9699 I agree that he is *reasonably* the first boss you are meant to fight, but I maintain that he is not intended as a tutorial boss. DS2's tutorial area is Things Betwixit, and it's tutorials are entirely optional (like Elden Ring). You may enter the various rooms and learn the basics of the game, or you can just go on straight and exit it immediately. It is quite clearly intentionally designed as a tutorial area by the designers, and the Last Giant is not part of this area. I understand *why* the last giant was put on the list - it was either him or nobody - I'm arguing he is not a tutorial boss. It is kinda like putting Anatstacia in a firekeeper tier list. She is indeed the first fire keeper in DS1, but she is not the token fire keeper like the rest of the games have. edit: typo
@@YasonYou "I understand why the last giant was put on the list - it was either him or nobody - I'm arguing he is not a tutorial boss." Kinda what I was trying to say, only you said it better. I mean, let's be honest, this tier list wasn't the best anyway (not talking about Ember here, but the Tiermaker page). Who in their right mind would have called the General the tutorial boss of Sekiro rather than Genichiro? Even Soldier of Godrick makes more sense than that...
Congratz on the 100k! Well deserved my guy. Also as far as I’m aware, “soulsborne” is literally anything FromSoft has put out so it’ll include Sekiro and Elden Ring, “souls-like” is the same style but made by literally anyone other than FromSoft. So yeah just saying “souls game” is a fair thing to do
Honestly, for elden ring I consider Tree Sentinel as the true tutorial boss. It's a really good fight by itself, but also can teach you some valuable lessons, chief among them being that it's sometimes the best idea to just avoid a challenge until you are better prepared for it. Also I do agree with yarnham's placement, but comparing it to the other, more contained, tutorial levels doesn't feel quite fair. Also I still say that, in terms of relative difficulty to the character's strength at the time, it's the hardest area in bloodborne's base game.
I played a little of DS2, but I didn't head into that forest on my first attempt. I didn't realize I could go that way from Majula, so I headed down that tunnel and...yeah...it went about as well as you might expect. I ended up running past those knights even though them being so strong should have been a clue as to head elsewhere, but I'm used to difficult enemies in these games. I ran into the Dragonrider and had a very, very bad time of it. Didn't notice the switches to expand the area or anything. Got immediately kicked off the area by the guy. Bad enough of a time that I actually restarted to change my build and then I realized I needed to go the other way first. Whoops. For DS3, what about the area before Iudex Gundyr as a tutorial area more than the area around Firelink? That area is more of a tutorial area since it teaches the player all the controls and the plunging attack as well. It also has the first giant crystal lizard. I admit that I cheesed that fight. Got it to follow me and roll itself off the cliff for me. I made up for that by fighting the 2 in the Untended Graves properly. I also cheesed the Sword Master into jumping off the cliff (though I fell too) just so I could get the uchigatana early and use it until I got the Hollowslayer Greatsword. The Soldier of Godrick gave me a "wtf was that?" moment, followed by a lot of laughing. Admittedly I knew the tutorial area was more meant for people who'd never played a FromSoftware Souls game before. Especially given how obvious they had to sign post it for people to try jumping down. Instead of, you know, the usual yolo approach many take, including myself, early on. Yeah, the Central Yharnam area is the best starting area since it really isn't a starting area at all, as you said. They just toss the player into the game and expect them to sink or swim and it's great. Cleric Beast is great for showing players the beast bosses and then Gascoigne shows the player first how to fight other hunters and then that there are going to be multiple phases to nearly every boss (and that the phases could be radically different from each other). I seriously just finished my first run of Bloodborne earlier this week and it was amazing. I'd started the others at various points on PC before I got a PS5 and I got sucked into Bloodborne immediately. It's the first FromSoftware game I've finished and seen the end credits roll. For DS3 I've completed the main game and just have the 2 DLC to do. I took a break from it to focus on finishing up Bloodborne.
wouldn’t really count the cleric beast a tutorial boss because it is totally optional and doesn’t prepare you to bosses like gascoigne does for gascoigne you need to dodge and use your gun to stagger, and you get shown that bosses can have more phases which can be totally different, and it shows you human and beast bosses in one fight
you DONT HAVE TO die to get your weapon in bloodborne. You can run past the werewolf, open the doors, climb the stair and access the hunters dream and get your weapon. Dying is just FASTER but not mandatory at all. I have only died there once on my first play. So your Ego didn't found the way to get the weapon without dying to a simple mob.
Iudex is the best tutorial boss, period, followed by Asylum Demon. They both accomplish their goals of introducing players to the game and its mechanics effectively. Margit is the best first boss, without a doubt. Cannot speak for Bloodborne or DeS anywhere as an Xbox player.
Jokes aside, I do wish they could've done more with Elden Ring's tutorial. I ended up playing through the game passively and apparently it favors a more aggressive playstyle.

And that realization made me play a lot of DS3. And play the whole DS series. And Elden Ring. And now I dream about Bloodborne on PC much more than before.
I got to go back and play all three Dark Souls, so nostalgic just seeing this stuff
Honestly I consider the grafted scion the tutorial boss in Elden ring. Yeah it really teaches you what you need to know. Plus if you do die you do end up getting a chance to get revenge later.
My favorite part of the soldier of god, Rick was when you fight him later as Champion Rick. Love the call back to DS3!
Glad you finally put on video on your tiers list, the every boss ranked video was fun but it was kind of hard to watch just a simple tier list.
I think all my tier lists have them besides my 1 hour vid cuz my computer couldn’t handle it lol
The Cleric beast teaches you how huge beast-like Enemies are like and Gascoigne teaches you stuff like how to Parry and dodge effectively and his beast Phase is a bit of a shocker ngl but anyway
Congrats on 100K subs
It was my second Souls game and I absolutely loved the gameplay right from the start
You sneak past some samurai. You eavesdrop on them. You learn how to stealth. Damn, what more do you want? It's beautiful!
What do you think of this bad movie idea. It will be called Pom bomb a team of cheerleaders go on a heist
Still neat.
For areas imo:
Undead Asylum felt very jank, but i still liked it for the most part.
I didn't mean to rant this much. Only intended to talk about the Last Giant lol
@@cincameron super fair point though, I would not even list the last giant as the tutorial boss as the journey through heide is probably easier.
Happy 100k subs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Congratulations on the 100k Ember, well deserved.
Gundyr is the best tutorial boss. 👌
Thank you so much! And I agree
Rick, Soldier of God being the final boss of elden ring after fighting him for the first time was great
Loving your channel and content and I would like to express some suggestions for your videos tier list: Ranking the games from worst to best based on art direction, atmosphere/world design and combat. Would be really fun
I love that idea, thank you!!!
my friend died to soldier of godrick twice.
also I don’t think it’s necessarily D rank because it teaches new players how to actually attack a npc, since the only npcs they’ll see are the horse guy (which won’t teach anything) and the boss your supposed to die to. So it allows you to properly fight an enemy that does counterattack and is stun able. That’s just how I felt anyways since ER was my first souls-born (played ds1 and sekiro so far)
Yeah, but frankly any of the enemies in the tutorial cave could’ve done that as well
Another great outro keep it up man
In 3 years this guy will be close to 1 million. Mark my words
I was expecting margit to be considered the tutorial boss, because soldier of godrick was so easy I didn't know it was the actual tutorial boss
You’re my favorite UA-camr right now 🔥
To me gundyr was perfect tutorial boss along with the sekiro one.
i think its worth mentinoning that the last giant is one of three possible first bosses you can fight the other two being the dragon rider and dragon slayer
Or the Punnisher.. I mean The Pursuer if you climb the stairs (without a boss health bar buy hell, he's the boss)
There's actually ten of them:
-The Last Giant
-The Pursuer
-Dragonrider
-Old Dragonslayer
-Royal Rat Vanguard
-The Rotten
-Scorpioness Najka
-Twin Dragonriders
-Darklurker
-Aava, the King's Pet
My list would be:
S: Iudex Gundyr, DeS tutorial area, DS2 tutorial area
A: Asylum Demon, DS3 tutorial area, DS1 tutorial area.
B: Vanguard Demon, (Grafted Scion,) Sekiro boss and tutorial area
C: Soldier of Godrick and ER tutorial area (just too easy)
D: DS2 tutorial boss, Bloodborne tutorial boss and area. (Don't exist.)
Man i love gundyr hes seems like a worthy opponent :)
I would consider the Tree Sentinel more of a tutorial boss then Soldier of Godrick
huge Congratulations, well deserved!
Last Giant is not a tutorial Boss, he is just usually the first boss you fight.
DS2 doesn't have a tutorial boss. It is slightly more open ended that way.
So by default last giant is the tutorial, got it.
She is indeed the first fire keeper in DS1, but she is not the token fire keeper like the rest of the games have.
edit: typo
@@YasonYou "I understand why the last giant was put on the list - it was either him or nobody - I'm arguing he is not a tutorial boss."
Kinda what I was trying to say, only you said it better.
I mean, let's be honest, this tier list wasn't the best anyway (not talking about Ember here, but the Tiermaker page).
Who in their right mind would have called the General the tutorial boss of Sekiro rather than Genichiro? Even Soldier of Godrick makes more sense than that...
Yes, the watchmojo of Dark Souls
He really is. Mentions soldier of godrick is for game journalists, proceeds to mention how he ignored Sekiro telling him to stealth
😂😂😂
Bloodborne was my first, so Yarnham was just the golden standard lol. My buddy said "Can't do it? Get better."
I missed Cleric Beast on my first playthrough of Bloodborne, meaning Gascoigne was my first boss. Yeeeesh
I’m happy to support you bro we’re all here for you if you feel down etc
I appreciate u
@@EmberPlays Yw bro 😎
5:02 fu ! he's the best
You absolutely deserve 100k!
What you mean, Rick, Soilder of God is S+++++++++++++++++++ tier
cant belive you but rick at d like hes soldier of god rick (good tier list overall)
ayy congrats on 100k bro, really happy to see it happen. also love that your videos serve as fundraisers for Feeding America!
Video idea: popular soulsborne builds tier list, based on how fun they are to use
Inb4 Giantdad build memes spawn.
Inb4 the RoB skill spammers invade
Love your videos! And congratulations on getting 100k. :D
Congratz on the 100k! Well deserved my guy. Also as far as I’m aware, “soulsborne” is literally anything FromSoft has put out so it’ll include Sekiro and Elden Ring, “souls-like” is the same style but made by literally anyone other than FromSoft. So yeah just saying “souls game” is a fair thing to do
For the record you just have to make it to the first lamp post to get a weapon. That or be braver than me and find one in Central Yarnham
i always forget that margit isn’t the tutorial boss cuz i’m so used to just going straight there on a new save xP
Bloodborne was my first fromsoftware game, it definitely wasn’t an easy starting place. Cause wow
But it’s not even in the tutorial area
Congrats on 100k! You deserve it!!
Thank you!!!
i beat gundyr first try on mouse and keyboard. it was a very close fight and a lot of fun though
I'm still somewhat bummed we never got to see the Eastern, Western, and Southern undead asylums
Congrats for 100k
Thanks :)
Congrats on 100k dude! your content always slaps and I'm hyped to see where you head!
iudex gundyr was the best boss, best tutorial area was undead asylum.
Best dark souls UA-camr for sure from a casual
For me champion gundyr are in my top 5 fights in so soulsborne love those fight
Will I live to see the day where Ember actually makes an outro? Maybe next year on the first of april who knows...
Bloodborne was my first souls-borne game and you can guess how that went and also I’m slightly biased so I say cleric is A
First video I've watched by you and I subscribed just from the intro. You seem like a great guy you're clearly going places!
wouldn’t really count the cleric beast a tutorial boss because it is totally optional and doesn’t prepare you to bosses like gascoigne does
for gascoigne you need to dodge and use your gun to stagger, and you get shown that bosses can have more phases which can be totally different, and it shows you human and beast bosses in one fight
BloodBorne was my first souls game and the first level I got a hang of it pretty quick. Vicar Amelia made me quit tho
you DONT HAVE TO die to get your weapon in bloodborne. You can run past the werewolf, open the doors, climb the stair and access the hunters dream and get your weapon. Dying is just FASTER but not mandatory at all. I have only died there once on my first play. So your Ego didn't found the way to get the weapon without dying to a simple mob.
Congrats on 100k subs
Iudex is the best tutorial boss, period, followed by Asylum Demon. They both accomplish their goals of introducing players to the game and its mechanics effectively. Margit is the best first boss, without a doubt. Cannot speak for Bloodborne or DeS anywhere as an Xbox player.
I consider Gascoigne the tutorial boss of Bloodborne but I can see the argument to have Cleric Beast here
The Soldier of Godrick was the hardest boss ever. He's easy because he's using only 0.1% of his power.
Jokes aside, I do wish they could've done more with Elden Ring's tutorial.
I ended up playing through the game passively and apparently it favors a more aggressive playstyle.
Congrats on 100k Ember!
It's so nice to see you finally reach the milestone, you deserve every single sub! Keep grinding broski and 200k will come sooner than you think🙏
Thank u so much!!
Babe wake up ember made a new vid
This dude gave The soldier of God, Rick.....a D tier
Rick folded me more than Malenia....
Personally, I don't think Central Yharnam should be competing here. It's not a Tutorial Area, it's an Introductory Area (the equivalent of Undead Burg, Lothric Wall or Ashina Outskirt). The closest Bloodborne has to a tutorial Area is the small part of Iosefka's Clinic right at the beginning.
Of course rick is d tier. Man is waaaaaaaay too hard for a tutorial boss. His power is over infinity.
The soldier of godrick i don't even know how you beat him
babe wake up ember finally uploaded
You dont newd to die to get a weapon in bloodborne , if you reach the lamp you can go to the dream an get it
I can fully say, yes, killing soldier of godrick easily gave me such a huge ego boost 😂😂 went to the sentinel and got my ass beat
Here’s a video idea: “Ranking the best outro”
If we're considering Central yharnam/gascoigne as the tutorial area/boss, nothing else in the series even comes close except for Iudex Gundyr
Even Iudex doesn't come close.
Agreed
And Margit.
