  • The Casio SK-1 was a revelation when it was released in the 1980s. It became an instant best-seller, and enabled people with no musical experience (or a very small budget) to have access to audio sampling. Suddenly people all over the world were sampling themselves saying "hi", or sampling various belch and fart sounds. :)
In this video I take a very brief look at the Casio SK-1. I go through the various features of this little keyboard, including the preset voices, as well as the rhythm sounds. I also give a short demonstration of the sampling feature.
There has been a debate over this keyboard since the very early days. Many people maintain that the SK-1 is nothing more than a toy. While others insist it is a perfectly decent keyboard that can produce some surprisingly good results. On that topic, watch the video to find out where I found my SK-1. :)
These do pop up on the second hand market. If you are lucky enough, you may find one at a garage sale, a flea market or a yard sale. You can also find them on websites like eBay, but sometimes the prices are through the roof.
Many people may not realize this, but the SK-1 also offered inputs on the back. You didn't just have to use the built-in microphone. There was a 1/8 inch jack on the back where you could input your own mic, or a line-in jack so you could input a tape deck, VCR, that kind of thing.
Did you own one of these back in the day? Do you still own the Casio SK-1? What do you think of it? Do you think it is a genuine keyboard, or just a toy? Let me know what you think! Feel free to leave a comment.
