Marcus Rashford is enjoying the most productive season of his career. After 24 games he had already broken his own record of goals scored in a season. But how much is this turnaround in the Manchester United attacker's fortunes down to his own improvement? And how much is it down to his manager?
Jon Mackenzie analyses the data and the tactics. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

Actually, Benni McCarthy deserves much credit for Rashford's return to form and improving his finishing.
Lol imagine them giving credit to a black man
I need to hear more of this from the English media!

This is a classic case of less is more, I for one has always felt Rashford overdoes it especially when dribbling. Ten Hag must have seen it too so simply pulling in the reigns on Marcus offering more structure and less freedom has produced a more focused and effective marcus
He's shining now penaldo left.
Apart from the Liverpool game all of the United players have been better since his departure.
This. He always attempts low percentage dribbling past seasons. This time he's more at the end of play passages instead of trying to make chances out of nothing.

That said, we badly need goals from our other forwards, especially our 9. At the moment we'd have nowhere to really turn if he got injured or dropped form.

As a liverpool fan, i have loved watching this kid. Even on his down year I know he'd stay strong and continue to ball. Same thing with nunez. just needed some time. Rashford is a baller off the field too, doing a lot for his community. Cant hate this man
The influence of Benni McCarthy as assistant focusing on attackers seems to be forgotten...
Should have released this few weeks ago, before the Anfield Massacre.
I can imagine them debating whether to post it now or let it die down a bit and risk the next game being bad as well.

Tifo is back ❤️❤️❤️
its good to have you back
he's doing what he's good at again, back to basics....... I also feel like he has been playing hurt for a few years and now that is cleared up
Is it possible if you guys can make a video about all these statistical terms like xG, duel, turn over, recovery or something like that? Maybe what they are, how you calculate them and what they tell you about the team. Before the only stat i know is goal and assist, it’s kind of hard to keep up.
xG is calculated by a computer probability model which looks at the angle of a shot on goal, distance to goal and number of obstacles (outfield players and the GK). Similarly, xA looks at the probability of a high quality chance being turned into goal using similar metrics. The chances are compared against numerous other goals and assists which the probability model has been trained on, and a number is spewed out between 0 and 1 that shows how probable a chance creating action or shot on goal could have been an assist or goal, hence "expected".
Duels are individual actions when two players vie for a ball, and take-ons describe when the player in possession attempts to beat their man e.g. through a dribble or a burst of pace. A turn-over is any successful action, e.g. a tackle or interception, which relieves the player/team in possession of the ball and the direction of play changes; for the defending team, an attack begins, for the team robbed of possession, a defensive phase begins.
When a ball is turned over closest to the opponent's goal, when they are in their build-up phase, it is considered a high turn-over. Usually about 40 yards from the goal of the team under pressure. A pressure, is an off-ball action where the defending team's player(s) move(s) to close off passing angles and lanes and generally reduce the space and time which the in-possession team/player has on the ball, in an attempt to force a turn-over of possession.
I hope these help
@@paulnduati8355 thank you bro
Uploading this after United got annihilated is peak banter
Video made prior to 7-0 I presume.
That doesn't really change the context of this video.
Very interesting video, credit to Ten Hag for having the foresight to bring Benni McCarthy on as a striker coach. This seems to be a very important detail that was missed in the video.
Welcome back Mr Devine. Good to hear your voice.
The old voiceover guy is back!! Props
Because he’s about to renew his contract
Gives me Walcott flashback.
He is ten times better player then Walcott ever was
Cuz he has been playing for basically 20 years and its about time he had a above average season.
Why Marcus Rashford has exploded...
Liverpool : yes
He's not seriously he's been down on form ever since he came back from shoulder injury. A season before he was our key player. Although he didn't do something extraordinary but he was there, this season he's been in spicy form.
Had to get this video out before his form drops off
It helps having Casemiro who is willing to feed Rashy whenever he’s got an inch of space. Wout up top is also very willing to help him rather than try to always be a scorer. Benzema is that same style to a much higher degree but that’s just to give another example of that type of player
Answer: hes fully fit now, has a great mentality and is a very high level player.
But its the fully fit thing thats making a massive difference
Im sure it was the athletic or tifo that said rashford had an upper body course over summer to essentially fix his long term injuries (shoulder, back) now hes bodying defenders like his wolves goal
Glad to hear your voice back in the video. No offense to the other person but your voice and the explanation makes the video much more attractive.
Confidence and efficiency is everything for a striker. Rashford has it in abundance this year
I miss this narrators voice! His voice is Tifo's
Trademark!
Another narrator. Same silky smooth delivery. It's obviously a tifo trademark.
How did we lose to Liverpool 7-0
So glad Joe is back
Love TIFO
The best voice a want to hear on TIFO, please don't leave us again or atleast teach others to have your voice because I will be so bored listening to TIFO
The usual voice is baaaack!
Gareth Southgate; he’s done it again. /s
Finally the real guy pulled up to make the video
PR in full swing
his less productivity on the ball can also be explained by the fact he has played as a centre forward a lot this season due to weghorsts lack of threat in behind and martials absence through injury, im sure if he played the whole season out wide his takeones and touches would be much higher.
Do the merch song!
the timing of this video, could've waited a week at least
Friendly reminder! ⚠️
Ten Hag has only EVER won the same trophies as Steve McLaren.
(Dutch League and League Cup)
If Steve McLaren can win those trophies, then how hard can it be?
Damnnnn 🤣
His previous managers we're trying to make Man United play like other modern teams with slow build up play retaining possession but that's not the Man United way. Man United are at their best in transitional play, moving the ball quickly and catching the opposition off guard. There Rashford has a lot more space and his game is simplified, all he has to do is score!
As a South African i am proud to say that Benni McCarthy was appointed as the Attacking coach and now Rashford is booming....coincidence?
Narrator: "if you liked this video..."
Me: freakin' loved it! 💯
Was so difficult watching without Joe
@@ketlamorengpitso161 ????
Ivan Toney has more goals and assists than Rashford in the PL this season yet no one talks about him.
Bcs he is being investigated by authorities for doing illegal betting
He's a striker
You just did, congrats!
He's a no.9, that takes penalties, none of Rashford's 14 PL goals have been penalties, 1 of his 25 in all comps have been pens, Rashford also plays for Manchester United, where opposition teams, especially 8th-20th won't give Manchester United the space/freedom to play their game, compared to Brentford, where majority of the league, will push high, leave space out wide, and a high line, as they will fancy their chances more against Brentford, than they do against Manchester United
Rashfords PR people do such a good job of hyping him to levels he just isn't at. Kids and idiot fans gobble it up while watching 4 minute highlights every week and think he is world class. He ain't near it and we won't win the LG or Champs LG with this lad or much of these jokers tbh.
He tried with his best even on his bad days. I liked Martial more and I believe both have same level of skills. But rashford had stronger mentality which made him stand out better than Martial and other players.
He’s 25 and has always been a streaky player. He’s just being Purple Patchford ant the moment and will probably return to average level fairly soon where you have a fast player with average touch and decent finishing.
He scored again today
@@p-y8210 He did indeed. Will be interesting to see if this his new consistent level or not.
Credit due to Benni McCarthy 🇿🇦the strikers coach
❤💚💛
it's nice to see his loyatly to united start to finally pay off under a competent manager.
Can you explain expected goals, is it really as simple as it sounds or is there more to calculating it
Expected goals uses data from thousands of previous shots to calculate the likelihood of a shot going in
Joe is Back 🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳
His explosion season is considered Salahs down season there's levels to this.

A part2 video mentioning Benni McCarthy??
No mention of Benni McCarthy... 🤔
What about Benni McCarhtys influence?I think you should do a whole video dedicated to Benni.
How much effect do new contract negotiations have on player performances? We have seen this in the past with many players who hit new heights during such situations then return to normal self or even underperform after signing one.
Not that much. Even if he is rashford isn't the type to stop performing if he gets the new contract. Ten hag will make sure of that. Before the drop off has coincided with the team also not performing. Let's be honest united teams haven't been consistently good since rashford had his debut so it's unreasonable to expect him to be consistently good as well.
This is why contracts should be 90 percent performance based and 10 percent guaranteed. Assists, goals, tackles, clean sheets, xG, xA, etc. there are many metrics to utilize and it would force players to not be trash after they sign a new one, then become an absolute MONSTER 9 months before their contract expires. They would have to be consistent to get paid. You see it all the time in the NBA and NFL as well.
@@AutopilotAndChill they do have separate performance bonuses. If you do this, then players will be more selfish. This is a team sport after all. We have to create a win/win environment, where your goals / tackles rewards the whole team, apart from trophies and 3 points.
@@sigfigronath A win gives a bigger bonus than individual stats. Problem solved.
7-0 bhahahahahaahah
Everything is just your mind and thats why when he scores he points on his mind. 😊
Gakpo, Nunez, Gakpo, Salah, Nunez, Salah and Firmino = 7up Bottling Company = 7:0
Still, Rashford became Gash-ford after being beaten a lot by my dear Liverpool. He is still good, but not that enough to meet Salah's or Haaland's level.
Also, good to hear Joe's voice again!!! I missed that. I do wish to see a vid from Tifo about the disaster-class Belgium made during the WC22.
You forgot Benni Mccarthy!!
He had more goals than Ronaldo and 2 less than Drogba in 2006/07 season while playing for Blackburn
He's also learnt to head a ball but that's far too simple to include in a TIFO
Rashford's form is confusing man u fans into thinking seven hag is a master tactician. There is no difference btn ole and ten hag cuz the team still relies on counter attacking football with rashford running behind the high line....they can barely keep possession, esp away from home
No difference between Ole and Ten Hag 🤦♂️😂😂🤡 lol
I always knew Rashford was a games played merchant
@tifo
man, are you a coach or something of the like?
you analyse so differently, and you are so specific 👏

Im so glad this video wasn't posted 2 days ago or we'd all know what the comments would be filled with 🙄🙄
Burst into the scene
Benni McCarthy helped so much and this should be celebrated ❤💚💛🇿🇦🙌
❤🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍
Because Wout Weghorst is basically doing all the dirty work up front, which leaves Rashford with the time and space to be more dangerous in front of goal.
He hasn't against Liverpool! :D
Benni in the 18 area
He needs to calm tf down with that celebration though claiming other athletes are copying him. Stan Wawrinka was doing it a long time ago.
I think most of the credits should go to the arrival of Benni Mccarthy as the Striker's Coach
Here after the 7-0
You forgot to mention his sticker coach who is from south Africa. Havertown actually has more breakaways but is poor finishing

You’re talking about Ten Hag like he’s a genius. He made them man mark liverpo which caused their downfall 🙈

I have a feeling this video isn’t going to age well
He doesn’t have to pretend that Ole is an elite coach anymore…
As usual, as soon as Tifo posts a positive video on ManU, the next match/matches will show ManU crashing. Rashford will probably stop scoring goals. The Curse of Tifo!

Excellent timing for this video just after they get battered haha, bet the art department were annoyed
Oh. I though no Ronaldo, so less stress and better positioning available
Nah, even when Ronaldo was here he was still putting up decent numbers. It must be because Dalot and Fernandes are less inclined to pass to Ronaldo now that he's gone. Rashford was always getting into positions, just that no one was very willing to feed him
I am inclined to agree, even putting tactics aside Ronaldo was becoming a disruptive influence, Utd's consistency has improved post-World Cup now everyone's pulling in the same direction and Rashford is finally getting some service.... yes, Anfield was a horror show and coming off that we'll see what Ten Hag & the team are really made of.
I'm not usually one to big up Ronaldo, but I think Rashford learned a lot from Ronaldo during his 2nd stint! His poise and technique has visibly changed since then with him scoring very Ronaldo-like goals. It looked like they had an enjoyable partnership for a number of games also so I think that is one part of the puzzle also!
Your probably right, I mean tbh, he's probably scored more headed and tap in goals this season, than he had in all the seasons combined prior to this season, since his debut
@Jean-paul Walters For sure more headed goals but I'm talking more the shots you expect him to try curl around the outside of the keeper, only to whip it in near post with a lot of power. Doesn't remind of anyone else's technique. I wouldn't be surprised if Ten Hag said "Stick to that guy like glue and learn what you can!"
Rashford is playing soo well , coz I got to see him last year at the Nike campus here in Portland.
He has taken all my luck lol 😂
