Two years before his transfer to Manchester United, Leeds star, Alan Smith, had said in an interview that Manchester United were incompatible with his Leeds United roots and that he could never play for them. So how then, did his transfer come about?

This is not the Alan Smith who commentates with Martin Tyler
Josh Cuthbert that Alan smith of Arsenal won the Golden boot twice and won the league at Anfield. This one can’t even lace his boots
@@tanmaypagar8022 exactly
@Josh Cuthbert I wouldn't call a shot from a free kick a tackle...
Thank God someone brings this up
@Josh Cuthbert you just dont know anything about football so shut up
I cant speak for all Man Utd fans, but in my experience he was a massive fan favourite for us. Really unselfish player, always gave his all and there was a recognition that he had found the move tough.
Yeah he was definitely a favourite for me too, it a shame he had that injury but I'll allways remember his quality in front of goal and his want to press the oppo no end.
Fair assessment.
Im a die hard Liverpool fan, but 1 of my best mates was a huge leeds fan growing up. Him and his dad had season tickets for Elland Road and every now and again his dad had to work so I would go with him - it was around this time - Smithy, Viduka, Batty, Milner, Fowler, Robinson etc. Some of my fondest football memories and I dont even support the club but the atmosphere and the support around the team at the time was exciting to be involved in. Hope Leeds get back into the Prem soon where they belong, but us LFC fans will be sad to see you take Milly back from us
He was yes
I was happy when he signed for united. Just a shame he never really took off. And that injury was horrible.
A lot of shade being thrown at Alan Smith. By joining Manchester United, he contributed funds to saving Leeds United financially. That's one of the best things a Leeds lad can do for the club. Anyone with bitterness to him is misguided - he left because if he didn't, Leeds United may not even exist. Especially him. He saved the club. He and Milner are as loyal good Leeds lads as they breed.
Pretty much similar to Rooney moving to United from Everton. Die hard evertonian but Rooney moving possibly saved Everton as a whole.
*Sigh. So tired of this idiot excuse. It wasn't his job to "save the club," and if he just felt he had to do that, he could have went elsewhere. Nobody is misguided for rightly labelling him a Judas turncoat.
@@Michael_Chandler_Keaton firstly, calm down. Secondly, Man United were the best team in England. It was a huge move for him. And would you rather he stayed and your club went under? Embarrassing.
@@bens4602 Lol come now mate, let's not be daft. This one transfer didn't save the club from going under. That's revisionist, melodramatic nonsense. Furthermore, again it was not his job to "save the club." It was admitted that the move generated at most a couple hundred thousand pounds toward club debt, inconsequential ultimately for a club millions in the hole. He knew what he meant to Leeds, and from his own mouth he'd never go scum. There were other moves available, but the Leeds board were in a rush. Smith could have slowed things down by refusing the move. Right or wrong, whatever one's opinion is, let's just drop the mad "he did it to save the club" nonsense. It's juvenile and nauseating.
@@bens4602 And Arsenal were the best club in England, not the scum.
Was always a fan of this guy at United... his hardwork, his determination, eye for goal. He was just great.
Until he left for scum
Yeah totes!
As a leeds fan. I had no problem with the move and didn't resent him. He knew it was the best deal for the club and this transfer essentially saved us from going totally bust. Anyone who calls him a traitor are pushing the envelope in my eyes. He always had the best interests of Leeds in his mind.
@Bootneck777man said he wanted a UCL club and United were the only UCL club going for him 😂
Most Leeds fans in this day and age realize the sacrifice Smith made. Man U were the only club putting a good offer on the table and in turn, moving to a club he hated and said he would never move to, helped saving us. You still see a couple of fans saying Judas though...followed by a barrage of "he saved us" messages.
We all know Harry Kewell is the real Judas
@@harrisonlupton3857 Agree, burnt his bridges when he went to those Gala-C*nts in the name of "bringing the clubs together".
Man United saved you, dont get it twisted :)
@@bhew7409 Oh yeah, maybe they can work the same magic in saving themselves over the next few seasons :D
@@stevenhickenjr haha, we trying!
Lol Fergie was a proper troll...Michael Owen, Alan Smith, RVP...
he even 'stole' Giggs from city 😅
Yeah he was ruthless. As much as United fans loved him and as successful as he was he was also a total bastard and pissed alot of people off along the way (not sure united fans agree)
To me, he is the embodiment of corporate football.
...and Giggs ended up winning more trophies than City :D
Benitez refused to buy back Michael Owen because his agent was a prick. so Owen could only join Manu, one of few teams who actually made an offer to buy him from Newcastle.
@TheRealist 811 By the time we sold Smith we had already been relegated. Not much to weaken there.
Don't forget Roy Keane had already told Dalgleish he would join Blackburn before Fergie persuaded him to change his mind
Gutted for smith...
We was delighted when fergie got this deal done. He was a massive favourite at Old Trafford, I reckon he could have gone on to be one of the best ever...
I was at the league Cup final against Wigan, think it was 2006??
We sang Alan Smith Alan Smith Alan Smith all the way through...
I remember all the utd players had Alan Smith t shirts on through the warm up and again at the end when collecting the trophy...
Never forgot that he put his body on the line for his club...
Isn’t it funny to think that there was a time when a player could just delay their unveiling at a new club in an attempt to calm supporters. That would be pointless today because the supporters would still go for you on Twitter.
Another what could he have been? The injury changed him forever. He was a warrior & bull. Gegen pressing like saiyan before it was cool.
Smith was my childhood idol when he signed for United, I always tried to emulate his playing style of sliding tackle to unsettle defenses and he was probably the only striker in the world that does that. His endeavor and passion was always admirable. Thank you for this video TifoFootball.
Alan Smith was exceptional, tenacious. I liked his game. I also thought he might be Roy Keane's illegitimate son😄
He was utter shite at Newcastle
@@JohnKobaRuddy The injury vs Liverpool finished him. It's Newcastles fault for going for him.
JUDAS MOT
He was OK, he was nothing like Keane as a footballer other than he could get stuck in. He couldn't pass for shit and you could tell he was a forward playing in midfield....apologies if I sound like an assehole but Comparing smith to Keane is an insult to Keane
Overrated as f@ck and ran about like a headless chuck kicking players is that what you mean?😂
Leeds fan here. I loved him at the club, like others have said, he had everything to endear him to the public. He was a good finisher, good in the air, hardworker, relentless presser.
He may have said that he isn't going to play for them and he did. But with the club desperately needing him to go and only 1 club bidding for him, what else could he have done?
I like a lot of Leeds fans never blamed him, at the end of the day Peter Ridsdale is the only one to blame for the fire sale which saw a local hero go to a bitter rival. i would say all the players sold suffered from it too, i doubt it feels great to be bought because you where going cheap.
Viduka was never the same. I say that as an Australian and he's a hero of mine (and anyone who follows the sport in our country)
As a Leeds fan its really hard purely because it was Man United, Leeds were a financial basket case and we all knew player sales were incoming. Its just that its to them.
I don't blame him
Do you think Leeds fans would have preferred him to have gone to another club but for less money?
Leeds united sucks lol..petty with a small club mentality..poor beggars 😂😂😂
@@H1vey I think at the time he was made the victim because of the timing - after losing Robo, Rio, Fowler, Milner etc and not replacing them it was too much of a loss for the team. I think when Rio and Milner left it was very much an expected loss, the fans new they couldn't keep that team for long but they didnt expect to loose as many stars as they did. At the time I remember and equal amount of anger at the club and at Smithy...
Just another bullit in the long list of reasons why everybody hates man united.
I think he was convinced by the board that going to United was the best thing for Leeds since they offered the most money. If they'd have taken less for him Leeds might not have existed. So even though it was probably tough for him, he was doing what he thought was the best thing for Leeds at the time.
@@keytostart7053 they got a hefty fee for rio and reasonably enough for smith.
The only other player not on your list is kewell. Its a criminal leeds let him go for a paltry amount of fee.
as a United fan I of course love him... he was member of my favourite squad of 06/07 ...and part of that most legendary match when we beat AS Roma 7-1 in Champions league quarter finals...
Injuries caused Alan Smith, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen to underperform and end their careers.
Tee Jay don't forget Rodrigo Possebon and Ben Collett
Michael owen best goal? Vs city for sure!!!! Worth every penny we paid for that goal😅😅😑
Chris Perry Would’ve been even more regarded had United won the league that season ! But Chelsea did !
As a Leeds fan, I loved Alan Smith. I was angry he left for our biggest rivals, but I know now that he took a bullet for our team. It didn’t help we went down that year, he was a good kid.
Moral of the story: NEVER SAY NEVER
You just said it twice
Do one about Torres' transfer to Chelsea from Liverpool
Jamie Carragher recently said that selling him was a perfect decision. He was already waning down.
@@AdarshKumar-nj7rp didn't fucking ask u did I ....I am talking about how the move developed, the whole story... not Jamie carra version of it...

@@fernandoiniesta0081 I never objected to your demand. Also it's a comment section. I can write whatever I want.
@@davidrowan3853 I think ull find that Suarez was bought in to partner Torres up front......the replacement was Carroll, who well and truly failed....this was one of the biggest transfer headlines in the previous decade, and a lot of the details are still blurry....it would therefore be nice to see an objective report on the transfer that tells both sides of the story, rather that the club's narrative, which paints Torres as the traitor, when infact, as people inside melwood know, there was a lot more to it....
Do a video on the corruption of the European cup final of Leeds v Bayern and the referee being banned for life

we loved him at united. what a good player he was for us
A video on Arsenal’s Alan Smith would be nice too most people know him as the commentator in FIFA video games but he was once a deadly striker. A video on his playing career and subsequently his commentary career would be nice :)
Hello everyone. I'm Martin Tyler, this is Alan Smith
Though not the same Alan Smith.
Clive Tidesly here.
different Alan Smith
I'm just joking guys
This is a different Alan Smith
he was injured for so long people just stopped caring. i even forgot how good he once was.
Was never the same after the leg break
Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith, Van Persie, Cantona.... Manchester United sure know how to piss off fans of the former clubs of the players they bought.
Nishanth Ashok it's called buying the league utd have been doing it for years, the only reason their dominance stopped is cos other teams started doing it
@@StoutProper Oh yeah. How else do you propose to keep improving the squad? By using the same players? United have a long list of home-grown players who have become solid players for the club with some becoming legends of the game. You can't just say United bought the league and ignore the perseverance, the determination and the hard work the staff of the club (from the players to the manager and the coaches to say the least) put in to stay at the top.
If it is so easy to buy the league, then why haven't Chelsea or Arsenal done the same. They have the money power to do it too. To blindly say it's because United bought the league is disrespectful to the club.
As for the current situation at Manchester United, it's due to the lack of a clear path/plan that the club has suffered. The board of directors, the transfers, the fans, the poor recruitment (both with managers and the players), all have contributed to the failures that United is facing right now. You just can't say it's down to the money the club has spent over the years.
j d tick tock...just a matter of time before United challenge again.
Ah yes Alan Smith. I recall you scored a few headers playing for Arsenal, right Alan?

Nuri Volkoff we know
As a man utd fan i am proud that he was our player and ill never forget that amazing performance from midfield against roma at old trafford
Reminds of when RVP signed for United. The anger that reverberated around the Arsenal fanbase was pretty strong!
I'm a Gooner and tbh, I didn't blame him and we got a good price. It said more about the club at the time than his character. He went and won the league when we had no chance so was the right move. Plus he was prone to injuries so there was always the possibility he could break down again.
@@alfredthegreat9543 I was more annoyed than angry - I fully understood his reasons but was just annoyed we couldn't hold onto him at his peak but certainly don't hold it against him and thank god it wasn't to City unlike some other players I could talk about
Stuck with him through countless injuries and left us in his prime as our captain when we were still competing for silverware. Gave me a lot of good memories but that one is still hard to get over. The fact it was to United made it hurt so much more. At least go overseas, the prick
Alan Smith, the man who have guts to stop John Arne Riise's freekick
Who broke his leg
When he joined Utd he was my favourite, along with Park and Solskjear. Great player!
Why are you gay?
It's such a shame thay Alan Smith had the misfortune he did with injuries, i think the leg break was the turning point. He was such an exciting player to watch and you always felt like something was going to happen when he was on the ball. I think that he could have been world class had the stars aligned for him.
As a leeds utd fan and a kid at the time i loved this guy, when he moved I never forgave him after he said he wouldnt leave us. For those who dont know but Leeds and Man Utd have a huge rivalry even to today
Agree with you. But leeds fans at the time should understand further the consequence of not selling smith. It was survival or bust at the time for the club. And unfortunately united were the only club that had the money on the table.
Instead leeds fan should have criticize other players like harry kewell who purposedly went to liverpool for a really low fee.
No longer a rivalry just a hatred on Leeds behalf
What rivalry? I’m a united fan and we don’t have any rivalry with you these days mate. You don’t even play in the top flight so it wouldn’t make sense for us to stoop down to have a rivalry with some minnows (no offense) at best you guys still just hate us for whatever reason. We don’t see you as our rivals anymore.
I remember what a mess of a summer that was for Leeds. Gutted for them but can't deny that Alan Smith was a phenomenal rotations striker for Man United. Fergie magic there. Always wondered why Wenger never bought players from competition especially relegation clubs. Some gems out there.
Another great video as always! Would it be possible to do a video on the last time Leeds won the league title in 1991-92? Feel like its forgotten as it just missed the Premier League Era.
One of the most hyped player ...in prem league history.
Seriously look at players who were his foes. Here and across Europe.
Wolves fan here. I always really liked Alan Smith, reckon he would have gone a lot further in the game if it wasnt for THAT injury
I think most fans realise that the Man Utd offer was indeed the only genuine one and money up front and not like most fees which are staggered. To think Smudge waived a signing on fee when Harry Kewell and his agent "stole" half of the transfer money shows that he did what he could. It wasn't his fault the club was mismanaged so badly. Any bitterness from fans should be reserved for Peter Ridsdale and the club's directors and so called accountants who allowed this to happen in the first place. "Living the dream".......
One of my favourite ever utd players 🇾🇪
As a Bolton Wanderer “we saw you cry at the Reebok” was a wondrous chant
I was always a big fan of Smith at United. I think his passion and tenacity would endear him to any set of fans. The spell when he first joined and RVN, Solskjaer, Saha and Rooney were all injured (Rooney I think signed still carrying his injury from the Euros) he lead the line well and helped us pick up some important points. His performance in midfield against Chelsea in the 1-0 win in 05/06 was fantastic too.
That being said, I don’t think he ever really had the ability to be a first team player at United. While his performance against Chelsea was great, he was by no means a central midfielder and being pushed into that position by Roy Keane’s sudden exit did no favours for him. His injury certainly hurt his career, but I think his days at United would have been numbered regardless.
Saw him play at Sparta Prague in 2004 vs United. All traveling support sang "Smithy Smithy kiss the badge" at him and he went to do it... But stopped short. Cue booing (but good natured). He was a good lad. Shame he got injured.
I remember this transfer when it happened. I was very shocked when it happened. He was such an Un-Man Utd type of player yet he fit so well until his massive injury. Leeds on their part were in such a financial mess that they could not afford to reject any half decent deal
smith was my fav, i was a leeds fan before i became a newcastle fan. am happy both of my teams smith played for them. though he was finished by the time he played for nufc
"Smudge " Alan Smith was class came in as a striker then fergie made him a holding midfielder. Will never forget his performance against Jose's Chelsea. He bossed that game. Also his goal at old Trafford v Roma. Class player.
As a player he was amazing and he’s an even better commentator with Martin Tyler!
Brilliant as always. Phill Hay on the podcast would just be the icing on the cake.
I really enjoyed watching him at United. Real shame about the terrible injury when he was playing well
I was under the impression he moved to help Leeds as the fee received massively helped them and helped prevent them going under
Always tough to sign a player from the rivals! 💥
I remembered when Smith broke his leg in a game, Nistelrooy's reaction was priceless
I can't see why any Leeds fan would hold a grudge against him today.. It was the only option at the time.. And as a United fan I must say I always loved our rivalry.. I was always looking forward to man United vs Leeds United.. Was always a good show.. I can see from Leeds stand point we bought allot of your greats, but that was money that helped you in other areas
He was always my idol, since the playstation 2, a striker of race and delivery above all !!
The Journalism breathes with the Tifo and The Athletic
He would have been perfect for Bielsa's Leeds of today
As an 18 y/o leeds fan, I dont hold it against him
It clearly wasnt his plan to leave us for them but he realised it had to be done to save our club and for that I am grateful
Brilliant footballer, was my fav player back in the day when I was younger
A very underrated player
I like him. Still have the Man Utd kit with his name & number at the back.
The unsung hero of Leeds. It was like his decision to join United had indirectly saved his boyhood club. Respect.
Ojisama Ryozo how?
Remember watching him score against Portugal at Villa Park
Remember when Riise broke his leg with the football
I will never know why SAF played this guy in midfield. He was an awesome striker and that along with his injuries killed his career.
He tried to convert him into a midfielder because he lost alot of pace after his ankle dislocation/break against Liverpool...
@@SPANISH-TARQUIN I'm not convinced. Smith never had pace. It was his movement and finishing that made him a good striker.
saf envisioned his tenacity as the new Roy Keane
@@paddymcdougle
He was never a striker that got in behind defenders, he dropped deep and linked up play, he was very good at passing, never chose the wrong pass. I think he could have been a midfielder anyway - with or without that injury. But he definitely lost movement after that injury, he never looked as fast or as agile...
@@SPANISH-TARQUIN
SAF tried to convert him before the injury though. He should have stayed up front.
One thing we must learn as a football fan is that never ever believe what a footballer says. It's their career and money is involved. Just enjoy them while they are at your club. If they ever join a rival club, have to be subjective and see what is the reason. No hard feelings at the end of the day.
Alan Smith did his best for Leeds on the pitch and in the board room
one of my favourite united players at the time cult hero!
The blame lies with Ridsdale, 100%. Smith gave everything while he was at Leeds and was forced to leave. Can’t blame him for wanting CL football. Yes, I hate that he went to Man U of all clubs, but his heart was still in Leeds. I’d like to see him involved with the club again, for sure
Another good video. Sol Campbells transfer to arsenal would be good one.
Tifo Tifo Tifo !!!! And the fans are in uproar and delirium!!!
My English Teacher was a Leeds fan had Smith on a news paper clipping on his cupboard door... it vanished after the united transfer
When they lost at Bolton in the run up to relegation, he swapped shirts with one of ours (Okocha?). He looked really good in a Wanderers kit, I really hoped we could have got him
Great for leeds and Man Utd. I couldn't believe we'd signed him for Newcastle when he did but was a massive let down. It was that bad we turned him into a midfielder.
He was never the same after breaking his leg
I MISS SUCH A PLAYER LIKE HIM,HE IS THE ONLY PLAYER MAN UTD EVER HAVE WITH THE SAME TYPE OF ROY KEANE
He didn't sell anyone out, he did it to save the club, Smith is and will always be Leeds
This video is confusing. Did Alan Smith have any choice over what club he joined when Leeds were forced to sell him? Cause if no other club made a bid for him what was he supposed to do?
It was just as big as Sol Campbell moving from Spurs to Arsenal in 2001!
It was well know around Rothwell in Leeds that as a kid Smith was a Man Utd fan even playing in the street in a Man Utd shirt
I will always wonder "what if.." with Alan Smith. When he was at Leeds he was one of the hottest young strikers in England. Then he went to Man Utd and for some reason Fergie tried to turn him in to a Central defensive midfielder and his career faded away.
I think that is one of the few mistakes Fergie ever made, bur it was a big one!
Fuck me this broke my city. Properly hurt us all, as a young kid of 9 at the time I was distraught
Watching this, while Leeds got promoted. Waiting for you in OT!
6-2 😂😂😂
was his united career what was expected? or was he a high potential player back then when he was bought? like a grealish right now? or did he have a lesser potential?
Vilifying a player for moving to another club always seemed pathetic to me. Shall we remember all the great things he did for us? NO!! He moved to the F-in scum!!
Just calm down a bit. It's not your wife moving in with your best mate, its your mate moving to another company.
there's a difference between moving to a different team and saying "I'll never play for X team" and the next year moving to that team, specially if that team is a main rival. Just ask Mauro Zárate
@@applehack97
Lazio and Inter are not bitter rivals, they kinda "worked together" to stop Juventus in late 90's and early 2000's even though they weren't very successful in doing that. Even their fans get along as they both hated Juventus.
Also, Zarate's move from Lazio to Inter was just a loan deal and Inter was really low on cash at that time, very unlikely for Inter to properly buy Zarate.
Do you know any Leeds fans? Their level of hate for Man Utd has to be seen to be believed
@@HonestFarmerLigue1Fan I'm not talking about Inter and Lazio...
He did what he could to help his local club when they could no longer afford to pay him.
He had a good career at Man United and suffered a terrible injury.
I can't blame him if he has some resentment to Leeds
He was in an impossible position, Leeds needed him to go and personal allegiances aside United is an unbelievable career move. Whereas him refusing to go didnt really do anybody any favours apart from the Leeds fans maybe.
Shame about his injuries, England were a bit short of advanced players around that time and Smith had the sort of qualities every team wants.
Any chance of a tactics video on The Revie Plan? Just for the numpties like me?
Maybe I’m a little bit too young to have felt the sense of betrayal some Leeds fans feel about it but I have no bad blood towards Smith at all, it wasn’t his fault we needed to sell him and if there had been a real alternative I don’t think he’d have picked Man United. There are players who left the club who I do have resent towards, like Harry Kewell joining Galatasaray, but I hope Smith has a relationship/role with Leeds
Great player and in his prime at 23 when he left Leeds. Shame it had to be Man Utd he went to.
A very good story nice content I wish Harry Kewell had joined too 💯
A video on Sol Campbell to Arsenal would be great.
"And subsequently sold everyone out" isnt a fair thing to say. They were desperate for money and sold him to Man United. If Leeds were doing ok and he handed in a transfer request to go to United or ran his contract down like Sol Campbell then ok you could say that but it was a good deal for everyone concerned. It even helped Leeds not to actually end up being liquidated so the supporters wouldn't even have a club anymore and that was a genuine threat at the time. I just think its harsh that he was painted as a villain
Being a Leeds fan the general feeling seems to be Smith did what he needed to do to keep the club afloat, don’t think there is really much resentment
Read this piece on the Athletic, was quite good.
Only one Alan Smith . Gunners goalscorer in thec 80ts .
