Positions are constantly evolving in modern football. Or rather, there are no new ideas in football. Just new contexts in which old ideas seem revitalised. None more so than the role of the full back.
Liverpool’s Robertson and Alexander-Arnold appeared to have redefined the modern full back, but more recently we are seeing “inverted” full backs. And some full backs, like Diogo Dalot can be like Robertson and Alexander-Arnold, and invert.
Jon Mackenzie explains how. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

I think last night, the absence of Casemiro was much significant than the absen of Dalot. AWB perhaps can provide 70-80% of what Dalot can. But neither McTom nor Fred will be able to provide near 50% what Casemiro could offer to the team. IMHO.

@@ozeirGDETH's Man utd will play counter attack football against opponents like Man City and Arsenal because our squad right now won't compete against them head on head openly, that's why good defense and good transition is important which was provided superbly by Casemiro. Dalot in the other hand will help tremendously against lower team who use low block defense. Thats why we were able to defeat City but fail to win against Palace. But, off course having both Dalot and Casemiro is better than having AWB or MacFred. The Schedule was not in our favor either. I distinctly remember at least one surprisingly commanding defensive header against Villa. May have been one of Gerrard’s first games in charge.

it also depends on what you think Dalot will do in the fullback position. Dalot is not a good fullback, at least in conventional standards, but he has many strengths a coach should consider and adjust the overall system to make him a crucial cog. To really knows how Dalot plays best, better watch how Kimmich plays before being moved to the midfield before watching him, only less skillful with the ball. But he is much tougher defensively compared to the German.

If We had Dalot and Casemiro fit and available for arsenal clash there was no chance that arsenal had won. I had firm belief with few more signings we would be a title challenger from the next season...

We can only hope that one day defenders will be recognised for the complexity of their roles. Strikers receive all of the plaudits and awards but you can't deny that they also have the easiest outfield job on the pitch

But wasn't TAA in a sort of inverted position earlier this season? Why didn't that end up working for Liverpool tactically?

To play these complex roles your full back needs to be exceptionally skilled and tactically minded. I think the overall improvement in skill down the leagues has allowed this, rather than just tactical innovation.

Definitely think that contributed but when he came back it took him some time to get up to speed. Started to play fairly decently under Rangnick but wasn't that solid defensively. He's taken his game to another level this season.

Fullbacks are the new Box2Box players. Same attributes, 20-30 years ago, TAA, Dalot, Robertson, etc would be thought of as the new Viera, new Keane, etc. If Steven Gerrard we're coming up today, he'd be a RB.

So what makes him so special?....Is it purely just positions that EtH puts him in...If so, I think there are a lot of options out there that can do this as well, if not better...Just curious because they didnt present any advanced stats/analysis that set him apart...just the fact that the position is novel...imagine Cancelo in that role....Even AWB (and Shaw tbf) looks a "brand new player"

The CBs too, Lisandro and Varane. Man U defence is really good, but the ball can't circulate because of our midfielder mediocre qualities, except case and bruno. Eriksen can't keep up with high intensity game like game against Arsenal. Erik need more signings.
