Positions are constantly evolving in modern football. Or rather, there are no new ideas in football. Just new contexts in which old ideas seem revitalised. None more so than the role of the full back.
Liverpool’s Robertson and Alexander-Arnold appeared to have redefined the modern full back, but more recently we are seeing “inverted” full backs. And some full backs, like Diogo Dalot can be like Robertson and Alexander-Arnold, and invert.
Jon Mackenzie explains how. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

Dalot and Casemiro have been united stand out performers. Rashford might get the headlines but those two guys make everything look simple.
Lissandro Martinez
and martinez..
Martinez and Casemiro are the two stand-out performers, then it's Rashford.
Eriksen and bruno toooooo
@@sivekkr eriksen has been poo these past few games, he’s much better in games where we don’t drop back and where we dominate the ball
ETH'S DALOT GETTING A TIFO VID 🥳🥳🥳
Massively missed him during the Arsenal clash, especially in build up and defending at the back post. Ten Hag has turned him into one of the top RBs in the league
100%
Displaced Cancello for Portugal and the lad hasn’t been the same since 😁
@@iwantgoals1566 he's been injured you clown
@@raamikarajeh3462 Someone’s butt hurt 😂
@@iwantgoals1566 What? 🤣🤣 Who do you support?
He's very important player for Man Utd. That match against arsenal shows why Dalot is much more efficient than AWB in attacking and defending.
AWB probably only beats him in last ditch Hollywood tackles. he's done ok in the absence of Dalot but the game yesterday exposed why we need Dalot back
I think last night, the absence of Casemiro was much significant than the absen of Dalot. AWB perhaps can provide 70-80% of what Dalot can. But neither McTom nor Fred will be able to provide near 50% what Casemiro could offer to the team. IMHO.
@@jelek23 The first nketiah goal doesn't happen if dalot is playing
@@jelek23 both Dalot and Casemiro is big miss yes. Even if Casemiro plays against Arsenal, AWB wouldn't deliver as much attacking as Dalot is. There's a reason why Man Utd won games before the WC when Dalot starts in the full back. He was all around the pitch and willing to run back and forth.
@@ozeirGDETH's Man utd will play counter attack football against opponents like Man City and Arsenal because our squad right now won't compete against them head on head openly, that's why good defense and good transition is important which was provided superbly by Casemiro. Dalot in the other hand will help tremendously against lower team who use low block defense. Thats why we were able to defeat City but fail to win against Palace. But, off course having both Dalot and Casemiro is better than having AWB or MacFred. The Schedule was not in our favor either. Top 4 is the most rational target for Man Utd now, winning the FA, Carabao, or Europa will be a huge bonus too...
This is also true with luke shaw. Him and dalot always keep a sharp eye between each other's positioning, therefore if one of them invert and underlap, the other could stay wide and stay behind. And vice versa
Watching this after being impressed by Zinchenko’s performance against Man United.
Zinny is very much a unicorn. I argue that he is the most technically sound fullback in the world.
@@ryanlee315 for now, remember that his original position was a midfield. zinny's adventure at city and arsenal might inspire more coaches to do the same thing to oher players, converting creative and hardworking midfielders into fullback positions.
@@nakiyame2606 oh guys do you remember owen hergreaves? He played in all of that roles and positions, kimmich too.
For me a candidate is tyler adams.
@@nakiyame2606 Zinchenko wasn't the first to do this. I believe kimmich was converted into a RB at times
@@ryanlee315 RELAX RYAN Zinchenko is DECENT on the ball but he is DEFINITELY NOT ''the most technically sound fullback IN THE WORLD''! TIERNEY AND EVEN DIOGO DALOT ARE MORE TECHNICAL THAN HIM! HE HAD A GOOD GAME. NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS!
As a Porto fan I'm so proud of Dalot, ever since he started appearing for our first team he was consistently great. And although it was very sad to let him go, I'm so glad he's living up to his huge potential and getting more recognition. Plus I still get to see him play for our national team which is always great.
Dennis Irwin was way ahead of his time. I believe he's one of the best in football history along with Roberto Carlos. Irwin was great with both feet, took free kicks and pens. He was great at crossing the ball on either side. He was brilliant at defending and attacking. I have not seen any full back that even comes close to him.
Dalot has really improved due to being coached for the first time under ETH. Dalot has become very important to United and how we play.
Irwin is so underrated. He's rarely spoken about outside of United circles.
It's true, so ahead of his time that he was somewhat underappreciated during his time and hardly gets mentioned outside of Man Utd fans as one of the best LBs. Maybe because he played for Ireland which meant he wasn't able to get the fame he deserved and he was a quiet man but his ability was undeniable.
Roy, pls log in.
I’ve always been a fan of Dalot since Mourinho bought him to United, good to see him getting game time now 🔥
Dalot has been really good after Ten Hag came as Man utd manager
Actually he's been good since before ETH. It's just that it's clearer now that the team is performing better as a whole under ETH
@@fishyfish6510 Please remind me again, how many assists has Dalot? he is just beautiful on the ball, his final ball is either under hit or over hit.
@@obasajujoshua9860 He will improve that for sure. He's young.
Took way too long to realize AWB was not the right fit. I love his intensity, but that turns into too many cards and his passing and dribbling abilities are below average and were clearly hindering Man U’s ability to play out from the back
@@joejordahl6787 Lols, Ole's useless signings.
Mikel Arteta also uses Zinchenko like this. He comes near to Partey and starts the attacks and it makes the opportunity to Xhaka goes the penalty area like Gündoğan in City. In order to use Zinchenko like that he uses Ben White or Tomiyasu in defensive right back and slides the defence structure to the left and make it look like 3 center backs.
That's Guardiola inverted full back tactics joao plays the role in city with walker covering as rb/3rd cb
@@NAYouTuCA Yes that's true there are lots of similarities to Pep in Arteta's play but Zinchenko's role is different than Cancelo and since the Haaland came City no longer needs to send another player to penalty area :)
He used Noussair Mazraoui in the same way at Ajax and was an important part of the Ajax team the past few years.
I think with Liverpool, Wijnaldum and Henderson were capable of backing the fullbacks defensively but with Gini gone and Hendo aging, the team is vulnerable, if Liverpool can get Caicedo/Caqueret and Bellingham then the team could possibly dominate again.
Humongous "if." lmao
Make one about Zinchenko... I swear he's not a fullback, more like all field footballer.
because he is, I believe he's a CM/CAM for the national team
@@andreitv9921 in Arsenal he's CB, LB, LWB, CDM, CM, CAM, LW and RW.
Who? Putin killed that guy.
Arsenal got a steal there they really did
He is first and foremost a natural midfielder who can play as fullback but people remember hime solely as a fullback now. He was bought into City as a midfielder then Pep turned him into (inverted) leftback. Pepe has a knack of turning midfielder to fullback and fullback to midfielder since Bayern days.
Dalot and Casemiro in the Arsenal clash would have made the game a lot more exciting to watch!
Dalot reminds you to never give up in life. Now videos are made of him.
AWB wount give up to.... He is gonna be back.

Glad to see some Dalot appreciation. I actually think his improvement started under Rangnick last season. When he was finally given some consistent game time. I distinctly remember at least one surprisingly commanding defensive header against Villa. May have been one of Gerrard’s first games in charge.
I suspect Ole didn’t really rate him, because our structure and work in/out of possession back then was quite basic.
Can’t wait to have him back in the side. For all his recent renaissance, AWB’s old weaknesses were laid bare against Arsenal last night.
This channel is amazing. It provides in depth explanations and documentary-like style; it is the best football channels out there. Thank you so much
!
I'm happy he's getting game time and doing great
under appreciated player
Great video 🙏 need more like this
Amazing video. Dalots renaissance under ETH makes me incredibly excited for what he can do tactically for all kinds of players. I hope Dalot continues developing as he has, I believe he has the potential to be the best right back in the prem.
it also depends on what you think Dalot will do in the fullback position. Dalot is not a good fullback, at least in conventional standards, but he has many strengths a coach should consider and adjust the overall system to make him a crucial cog. To really knows how Dalot plays best, better watch how Kimmich plays before being moved to the midfield before watching him, only less skillful with the ball. But he is much tougher defensively compared to the German.
Nice video mate... so informative
He's a very good all round player and still developing. He's massively hardworking and brings confidence and maturity beyond his years.
Excellent video, great work!
I love this channel so much
Dalot is a quality fullback, take it or leave it
in fifa i always leave my fullbacks in second plan, just look for a fast full back and thats it
but im learning that full backs are as important as midfilders
I'd love to see an analysis of how Ben Chilwell and Reece James are used.
the attacking upside is covered with the number 10 drifting wide to support the wide men, or one of the midfield players which defensive duties is covered by the inverted full back
Hope he gets the recognition he truly deserves. Ggmu 🙏
Missed him yesterday man
Diogo was at the top of the list of players Utd fans wanted gone and now he’s playing like the best RB in the league. Great to see, bc I sure didn’t think he had it in him. Goes to show what a competent manager can do.
Thank you Jose for buying Dalot.
Much love AWB 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿.... To the people in the comment section, DONT DISPOSE THIS MAN LIKE THIS, He was one of the best players on the field in 2019-20 him and bruno only at the time, and he deserves alot of respect and support and without this support, there is no way he can tweak his game alittle and I know he just needs to know how to protect his back post only.... He is a true king 💪🏿
Head High Spider King.
Ahh I love this channel. Everything I think about gets verified by a video. Dalot has grabbed my eyes the past two years. Looks to be great. Amazing all around
Sounds like confirmation bias
We need him back from injury as soon as possible, he's been so so good for us this season
Every fan gets the coverage they Di -zerbi
Mourinho said he could become great. Never doubt the Special one.
He also wanted to sign Maguire.
I sure hope Roma doubts the special one.
What an underrated channel
1:50 is literally the ucl final goal lol
Zinchenko would've been the perfect example
A player we have missed these past few weeks
We missed both Dalot n Casemiro yesterday 😢
The W-M formation is back baby. 🙂
He won me over when he finessed Tranmere Rovers with a goal. Took a ball from a throw, dribbled through two defenders, chopped the third and tucked it into the corner. You got to love the defensive unit for United.
awesome video
Our attack on the right wing is severely lacking without Dalot. AWB has done a good job for the most part but United are a better team overall with Dalot.
grimaldo and frimpong taking this to the next level. 39 contributions in the bundesliga.
For anyone that is interested in another modern-fullback used in various ways is Sacha Boey. As a Galatasaray fan I might be slighly biased however watching him play is a joy, he is constantly overlapping, underlapping, inverting and he is everywhere on the pitch. If he improves his crossing and technical abilities slightly, his tactical understanding and prowess might make him a great fullback
AWB did a sterling job against City
zinchenko as playmaking fullback, as we see againts Manutd, even more than trippier for Newcastle. idk about dalot but im watching him.
How do you actually make your videos! They are so cool!
He did this yesterday against Dortmund!
Dalot was polished by AC Milan... when he left Milan , he was another player
Lol he had his moments but Milan didn't really help develop him, sometimes he played sometimes he didn't. Which was sometimes his own fault as well. He has United and Ten Hag to thank him, and of course himself.
This a great breakdown of the evolution into the modern full back .. however .. the quintessential and perhaps more prominent example of this role .. is Joao Cancelo
Kimmich, Lahm, Zinchenko, Ben White now. All on a par.
I dont mean to compare but i like this Tifo way more than Tifo irl. In every aspect, this one is far better
You guys should write a Football Manager (the game) handbook!
It would be much appreciated!
What song is playing in the background? Amazing jazz music.
Awb does things Dot can’t do, the last ditch tackle on Zaha for example.
Dalot's tackle on Bowen against West Ham this season.
The growth of Dalot in just 6 months under erik ten hag is unreal..He was so good that he replaced Cancelo in Portugal in world cup.. That's an insane upward trajectory.
Many credits have to go to Pioli for this approach... has been doing this for the last 2 seasons and a half. While Pep did do it with Lahm since 10 years ago.
Ahhhh Dalot. Jose's final gift.
4:05 What is a RIH and LIH???? I tried googling it and nothing came up, Right/Left Inverted Haemoglobin?
now i understand from tactical perspective why ETH reluctant to play AWB (AWB always hugging the sidelines)
Dang, I should've continue to play fullback back then.
That's why he got the new contract today.
Interesting video. But Dalot is not the poster boy for this.
He's very important to United
Dalot is good indeed
In portugal, I've always felt bad for dalot, man's got no playing time with Fernando santos there, hope ten hag makes him a monster of a fullback
Those who say wan bissaka is better than dalot stuns me..dalot has all the attributes for a modern fullback
love Dalot always been my favourite player and his emergence as one of the league’s best right backs is beautiful to watch
Diogo doesn’t get enough credit!!!
Sega to Sport Interactive "Write it down..."
I'm wondering what position on the football pitch is RIH and LIH.
they're where the CM players were so maybe Left Inside Halfspace and Right Inside Halfspace?? not entirely sure
Who are RIH and LIH ?
If We had Dalot and Casemiro fit and available for arsenal clash there was no chance that arsenal had won. I had firm belief with few more signings we would be a title challenger from the next season...
We can only hope that one day defenders will be recognised for the complexity of their roles. Strikers receive all of the plaudits and awards but you can't deny that they also have the easiest outfield job on the pitch
FB - It’s always been the most technical of roles.
But wasn't TAA in a sort of inverted position earlier this season? Why didn't that end up working for Liverpool tactically?
ricardo lewis from Manchester City is also doing the same thing
Should have made a video on Oleksandr Zinchenko of Arsenal instead. Seeing as though Arsenal won 3-2 over Man U
Dalot didn't play that match pal.
🐐
Basically Tifo saying “Hellooo, Ten Haaggg!!! Dio go’s right there!!!” 👉🏾👉🏾⚽️💨🏃🏻
To play these complex roles your full back needs to be exceptionally skilled and tactically minded. I think the overall improvement in skill down the leagues has allowed this, rather than just tactical innovation.
Ao Ashi moment
His return will be massive for Utd. Great vid
Still haven't talked about Manchester United or Dalot
4:05 what is an IH?
❤️☀️
Dalot probably got this going whilst in Milan tbh.
Definitely think that contributed but when he came back it took him some time to get up to speed. Started to play fairly decently under Rangnick but wasn't that solid defensively. He's taken his game to another level this season.
I know you are an English media, but when will we see videos on Inter ?
Fullbacks are the new Box2Box players. Same attributes, 20-30 years ago, TAA, Dalot, Robertson, etc would be thought of as the new Viera, new Keane, etc. If Steven Gerrard we're coming up today, he'd be a RB.
No he wouldn’t.
this called modern full back exists in south america since the 50s with nilton santos the father of LB that came up with junior roberto carlos and marcelo
The most Harry Potter of football video titles - next up, 'Kai Havertz and the Cauldron of the Missed Chances'
So, this meant a lot now why José Mourinho signed him before..
So what makes him so special?....Is it purely just positions that EtH puts him in...If so, I think there are a lot of options out there that can do this as well, if not better...Just curious because they didnt present any advanced stats/analysis that set him apart...just the fact that the position is novel...imagine Cancelo in that role....Even AWB (and Shaw tbf) looks a "brand new player"
What does an LIH and RIH stand for
People were saying Casemiro's absence from the Arsenal game would be a problem but Dalot was equally as missed.
TAA has become so attacking that he forgot to defend😆😆
We are lucky to have Shaw & Dalot as fullbacks (and backups Malacia & Awb are great too) - the only position we actually look like a top club. Everywhere else we barely surviving...
The CBs too, Lisandro and Varane. Man U defence is really good, but the ball can't circulate because of our midfielder mediocre qualities, except case and bruno. Eriksen can't keep up with high intensity game like game against Arsenal. Erik need more signings.
