    Neymar is one of the most gifted players of this or any other generation. His playing style, personality and the decisions that have shaped his career also make him one of the most polarising athletes of recent times.
    But is he also one of the unluckiest players we’ve ever known? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains why he might be. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

    Some time ago, he and Barcelona kept complaining that the referees didnt protect Neymar enough and that opposition players disproportionally targeted him. Many people disregarded it at the time, saying they should stop complaining and get on with in. But with the power of hindsight, it is practically inarguable that Neymar's career has suffered from injuries, many of which were caused by opponents challenges. It is only in our imagination that we may see what Neymar could've achieved, had he been able to reach is true heights.

      both Ronaldo and Messi changed their style so the chances they get smashed by a bad tackle are much lowered. They stopped doing winger style dribbling, holding the ball for dozens of seconds at a time trying to embarass people etc., stuff that they were capable of doing, but risky. They moved more centrally and became very efficient, not needing 10 touches every time. Whereas Neymar has never changed. His playstyle is STILL dribble it like crazy and make the fullback look like an idiot. Even after all these injuries and rough play and reputation for undressing defenses.. It's as much on him as his opponents.

Neymar ( hopefully) has a couple of years ahead of him as a professional footballer and i hope he will not get injured that many times in his future though i dont know if that is realistic. Refs need to protect these players more. They often focus on keeping the game fair, but the truth us winger, especially those who are highly skilled dribblers never get a fair shake. The rules should not just be applied individually, the rules should also be applicable to the team. For example, if a team has fouled the same player 6 times their should be a yellow awarded to the last player who found him no matter how severe. If they do it again, then another 3 total yellow cards can be awarded, and then an automatic red is awarded to whomever fouls that player. 6 is a bit much, but I think this illustrates how the rules should be better used to protect players and penalize teams for targeting skilled players via malicious tackling.

He needs it due to his playstyle and he’s wrongfully tackled at times when he doesn’t even have the ball anymore. Like defenders hate others talents on display. Also saying he’s ineffective is cap, he’s super effective he can give you an assist or goal per game look at Neymar’s stats. In middle you will get 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 players that likely to tackle you in a game but in wide area only 1 or 2. It seems today's football is not suited anymore for talented players like him.
    Football is becoming less brazillian and more english with less skilful players and more physical games without spaces.
    Also, the criteria referees take are harmful to the good old football.
    Defenders know they can get out and the blame goes to the player that wants to play, not on the unfair tackle the strikes receives.
    It is sad this is happening, Europe is dominating and adapting rules to fit their needs, harming other football cultures.

    • @epicmarschmallow5049
      @epicmarschmallow5049 Рік тому

      What a stupid opinion. The physicality of the game has decreased as seen by how referees routinely award penalties and free kicks for the most minor bits of contact (incentivising players like Neymar to dive routinely). Compare this to the game earlier in the 1900s where defenders could literally just kick you and you'll see that the rules of the game are being shifted to protect attacking players more and more (probably a good thing tbh).
      The real reason these kinds of dribblers are a dying breed is mostly due to managers realising that teams working with highly coached systems are more effective and accordingly encouraging their teams to play in a specific, practiced way as opposed to simply having some guy run with the ball for a bit before getting tackled 90% of the time.
      It's also weirdly reductive to equate talent and skill simply with a player's ability to dribble. Football is about so much more than that and it's incredibly silly to equate the two
