Suriname and Jamaica man. These 2 smaller countries have contributed to sooooo many world class players over the years that ended up representing the netherlands or england. Much respect to them and i think everyone is rooting for their national teams to reach a level thats atleast close to the talent theyve contributed. It is also fair to mention that a solid percentage of these players have european parents as well too so it could be a legit tough decision for them.

Thank you for this video, I never expected to see a video about my country on such a large chanel. I'd like to add that breaking even in our second season is a very optimistic goal and will be hard due to our current inflation rate. Furthermore, I'd like to mention "het kleurrijk elftal" which was a team of Dutch players of Surinamese descent whom played friendlies in Suriname in the 80s. Most sadly died due to a huge plane crash in 1989.

It's not the population of 600,000 in Suriname that is relevant, but the population of 500,000 Dutch nationals with roots to Suriname. I don't think any world class player was ever developed in Surinam. It's a combination of the wonderful dutch football infrastructure (the fa has 1 million members, more than the Spanish fa) and the ambition and talent of the surinamese community. I'd love to see Surinam in the 2026 world cup though! I didn't realize their chances of qualifying were so high.

That is where the truth is without the Dutch infrastucture with coaching and training, many of these players would have not made it, the same argument goes for African countries. Thanks for covering this, as the Surinam - NL relationship is rarely covered internationally. Some of these players were born when the Netherlands bordered Brazil!
One tragedy in this history is the SLM plane crash in 1989. The 'colorfol team' (kleurrijk elftal) of players of Surinam descent playing in the Netherlands were in this plane and many of them died. Gullit & Rijkaard were playing in Italy at the time, so were not in the plane.

Surinamese footballers from the Netherlands have a tragic plane crash in their history. In 1989, Surinam Airways flight 764 crashed while trying to land at Paramaribo (the crash was caused by the bad crew decisions made, coupled with a bizarre hiring structure of crew and lack of oversight). Many Surinamese Dutch players, part of the "Colourful 11", were on that flight to play a friendly with a local Suriname team. Most of the players on board died. Even more unfortunate, so many of the stars players part of that "Colourful 11" were denied permission from their clubs to play, so the players on that flight were second-stringers. Some players that were held back included Ruud Gullit and Aron Winter.

Suriname is blessed with talented footballers, but another Island that also helps the Dutch National team to produce strong talented players is Curacao. Eventhough not as much as Suriname... Curacao also has quite a few players that represented the Dutch team or the younger Under 20 squad.
Players such as Geertruida (Feyenoord), Gregory van der Wiel ( PSG, Ajax), Timber twins (Ajax & Feyenoord.), Patrick Kluivert (Ajax & Barca, his mom is from Curacao) & Jetro Willems (PSV, Newcastle & Eintracht).
Currently there's almost 15 players in Ajax Youth set-up, 11 in PSV and 20 in Feyenoord youth teams.
Curacao and Suriname can produce a very strong national team but majority of those players wont choose to play for either countries.

Mr Total Football - Cruijff himself!

The fact that Dutch-Surnamese players like Kluivert longed to play for Suriname is evidence that the dream is alive. I can't see it happen though. If you want to increase your chances to play on the highest level of the international stage you will always choose the Netherlands. Also, most players with a Surinamese background have been living in the Netherlands for a few generations now. Of course, they will feel a big connection with Suriname but they are born Dutch citizens and will prefer playing for the Dutch NT if they get a call-up. As it stands now playing for Suriname is only an option for players who will not be considered good enough to play for the Dutch NT. I also don't think players like Gullit and Rijkaard regret playing for the Netherlands. I don't think they would have chosen Suriname anyway if they had the option back in the day because it would have been a major drop in quality. Also, I never heard about that Kluivert quote but I always got the impression he was proud playing for Oranje and that he became the topscorer of all-time until Van Persie took it from him (which he celebrated with him because he was the assistant of Louis van Gaal back then). That said, I wish the Surinamese NT the best and hope they can qualify for the World Cup one day but don't expect any miracles because as it stands now the most talented players will always prefer playing for the Dutch NT.

The hurdle was from Surinam side. Lately they made it easier for Dutch Surinames to represent Suriname .
I think it was like this : Before 1975 Surinamese had the Dutch nationality. Those who moved to the Netherlands in 1975 did not have a Surinamese passport, so their offspring cannot claim an additional Surinamese passport in NL on grounds of (grand)parents. In order to play for Suriname they had to swap the Dutch id for a Surinamese (As NL does not allow 2 passports without parental or birth nationality). And in a practical way that is for most people a step to far .
