  • Israeli Palestinian conflict explained: an animated introduction Israel and Palestine
Easy to understand, historically accurate JewishVoiceforPeace.org/ mini- primer about why Israelis and Palestinians are fighting, why the US-backed peace process has been an impediment to peace, and what you can do to make a difference. This conflict is essentially about land and human rights, not religion and culture. Endorsed by Palestinian, Israeli and American scholars and peace activists.
Jewish Voice for Peace opposes anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab bigotry and oppression. JVP seeks an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem; security and self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians; a just solution for Palestinian refugees based on principles established in international law; an end to violence against civilians; and peace and justice for all peoples of the Middle East. Current mission statement adopted in 2009.
Jewish Voice for Peace is a diverse and democratic community of activists inspired by Jewish tradition to work together for peace, social justice, and human rights. We support the aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians for security and self-determination.
    We seek:
A U.S. foreign policy based on promoting peace, democracy, human rights, and respect for international law.
An end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.
A resolution of the Palestinian refugee problem consistent with international law and equity.
An end to all violence against civilians.
Peace among the peoples of the Middle East.
We are among the many American Jews who say to the U.S. and Israeli governments: “Not in our names!”
JVP supports peace activists in Palestine and Israel, and works in broad coalition with other Jewish, Arab-American, faith-based, peace and social justice organizations.
Jewish Voice for Peace calls for a U.S. foreign policy that promotes democracy and human rights. The United States must stop supporting repressive policies in Israel and elsewhere. U.S. military aid to countries in the Middle East must be based on rigorous enforcement of the Arms Export Control and Foreign Assistance Acts, which mandate that military aid may be used for only defensive purposes within the recipient country’s borders, and that aid may not be delivered to countries that abuse human rights.
Under these guidelines, U.S. military aid to Israel must be suspended until the occupation ends, since the occupation itself is in violation of these guidelines. Military aid allows Israel to avoid making serious efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as conflicts with its other neighbors. It enables the occupation, contributes to the devastation of Palestinian society and fosters the increasing militarization of Israeli society.
JVP also calls for suspension of military aid to other human rights abusers and occupiers in the Middle East. This aid helps prop up autocratic and repressive regimes, promotes violations of human rights and international law, obstructs democratic movements, prolongs the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and fosters militarism and violence at home and abroad.

I believe we should call for a referendum.
The most rightful thing is a referendum made by true original land owners (Palestineans, including native Palestinean jews) and they decide the state they want.
      Simple. Very simple.
It's not a thousands of years matter.
Otherwise, the immigrants who stole the land should go back to where they came from.

Every time there's a flare-up (understatement) in the region I run across well-intentioned people seeking clarification, so it remains one of my go-to's to help them understand. Thanks always JVP for your work and commitment to advocating for peace in the Middle East.

Who is trying to steal whose land? The Jews have a sliver of land while their Arab brothers occupy all the rest of the Middle East, and the ones that are radical islamists call for global jihad to destroy All Nations of democracy (Israel being the only true democracy in the Middle East), that hold shared values of human rights & liberty, because we stand in the way of them ruling over us by sharia law.

Israel is going to stay strong. Europe will use its security to save itself. They will continue to "love" Jews, hate Israel but in secret depend on their know how. So Stop with the bullshit. Whatever Israel ahs odne the other middle eastern countries are better? Syria? Saudi Arabia? Even Turkey is a dictatorship nowadays. Whatever you say, the world never cared about morals, countries care about their owjn interest. and capable intelligent israelis who have impact on security technology and IT who are willing to coorperate will not be deminished.. especially in a time where people make terror all over the world. but it is based on a lie. The Arabs immigrated to the land of Israel ain the late Ottoman Empire and British Mandate period. In 1919 they chanted "From turkey to Gaza Palestine does not exist" and petitioned that the currency would have in Arabic "Southern Syria" as it had "Land of Israel" in Hebrew. The whole "Palestinians" identity or history is a farce.

Israel & Palestine: A Very Short Introduction
What would happen if you built a refuge for a persecuted people in a place where another people already lived? In the next few minutes you'll learn why this moral (quandry?) is at the root of the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians.
And what you can do to help achieve a just peace for everyone in the region. First, there are a couple of things it's helpful to understand:
one: Many Jews fled harsh persecution in anti-Semitic Europe, especially the Nazi Holocaust. Zionists encouraged massive immigration to historic Palestine, at that time a British colony, where Jews had an age-old connection, and where small Jewish communities had long existed among larger groups of indigenous peoples.
But when the UN offered the Jewish immigrants the majority of a land for a new state called 'Israel', for the indigenous Palestinians who lived there it was a massive destruction of life.
They rejected the UNs partition plan and several Arab states invaded the new state of Israel. Israeli forces (essentially?) erased over 400 Palestinian villages and towns. By the end of the fighting, Israel controlled 78% of historic Palestine, and with 3/4 of a million, Palestinians who fled or were expelled, during fighting tried to return to their homes where the new state now stood, they were permanently barred by the Israeli government. While over a hundred thousand of their relatives and neighbours who haven't left became second class citizens of the new state along with new Jewish majority.
Today Palestinians refugees and their descendants number in the millions most are in the Gaza strip, the West Bank and Jordan. Many are spread throughout the world with millions still living in refugee camps, seeking to return to their homeland. To sum up, one group of refugees found a much needed home, but in the process, a new group of refugees was created.
Here's the second thing to understand, Israel was founded as a Jewish state, but now ask yourself, what exactly does that mean?
People have lots of ideas about what a Jewish state should look like. Some called for equality for all citizens, but what was created, in practice, was institutional discrimination against non-Jews. In other words, Israel ended up being built on a blue print of exclusion.
The Israeli government wants maximum land and resources: for Jews, but not the Palestinians living there. That's why, inside Israel, Jews get special privileges including rights to land and housing that are denied to the Palestinians citizens who make up 20% of Israel's population. That's also part of why Israel has never defined it's borders, In fact, they still hold onto land, the West Bank and Gaza, that they conquered in the war in 1967.
Since then, Israel has built Jewish settlements throughout (the/of) occupied West Bank building Jewish-only cities and supplying them with infrastructure like; roads and army camps, schools and even a college.
Military occupations are meant to be temporary but after 40+ years, this one looks permanent; and entirely unjust. In the West Bank, Israeli Jewish settlers and Palestinians live on the same land, but must live under 2 completely separate and unequal systems of Israeli law.
The Jewish settlers dominate the natural resources, including; water and agricultural land and they're backed by the Israeli army. To maintain the occupation, Israel has demolished thousands of Palestinian homes and orchards, confiscated Palestinians land, (farmed??????) captive civilian population in Gaza, and punished resistance with; raids, arrests and assassinations, all to gain maximum land while making life so difficult for Palestinians, that they will either leave, or be too afraid to resist.
Palestinians have fought back. For decades, they tried to achieve national liberation through armed struggle (some groups still do). But, the majority now support popular protest instead.
The deeply harmful pattern of control, repression and violence profoundly harms Palestinians living under occupation and Israelis living as occupiers. This must be broken to reach a peaceful and secure future for both peoples.
Now that you understand the problem, what about the solution? what about peace talks? So far, over 2 decades of US-backed peace talks have actually made things worse! (By helping Israel continue the occupation). It's been years of talking while Israel massively expanded the Jewish settlements and literally re-drew the map.
Peace talks are good, if they're real, but not when they're theatre to cover a land-grab. So now what? The current world super power, The United States, has been a terrible friend enabling Israel's destructive and self-destructive expansion onto Palestinian land by funding the Israeli military (the biggest recipient of US foreign aid in the world). But, there's another superpower that can make the difference: You.
There's a movement with hundreds of thousands of people just like you across the world including; Palestinians and Israelis protesting, educating, divesting and boycotting, all to bring non-violent international pressure on Israel to stop violating human rights of Palestinians.
Throughout history, where governments have failed to push for justice, people just like you, like us, have taken the lead and won. Now it's the Palestinians turn for freedom and justice. We can pressure Israel to end the occupation and the discrimination. We want all people, Jews and Palestinians, to have equality, human rights and democracy. We can change history. Join us.

Is a united secular state too much to ask for? Nobody wants to force the jews to leave, nobody wants a muslim supremacy (Hamas gains support because it contrasts itself with the corrupt PLO, and since military resistance is popular, their support soars during times of conflict). Is it too much to ask for a democratic state that won't see a difference between a jew and an arab? As a socialist, I wish to unite both people and shift the struggle from an ethnic/religious conflict to a class conflict, not jews vs arabs, but workers vs the bourgeoisie. It would be a joyous day when the working classes of both nations throw out their shackles to cooperate and found a just socialist society.

This video is very helpful for an easy introduction, but how could you not mention the Nakba? You say how they destroyed hundreds of Palestinian towns but not the thousands of people they massacred in the process? It wasn't just "fighting" as you say, it was an act of ethnic cleansing. And it is still ongoing. I highly recommend 1948: Creation and Catastrophe in which the settlers themselves describe what they did, alongside Palestinians and scholars on the subject. Other than that, I love JVP's work :)

The animated introduction omits one very important fact:
Between passage of the UN Partition Plan on Nov. 29/47 and the declaration of the state of Israel on 15 May 1948, Jewish forces had already dispossessed and expelled over 400,000 Palestinians, e.g., 60,000 from Haifa in late April '48; 75,000 from Jaffa in late April and early May and 60,000 from West Jerusalem in March and early May '48. Although reluctant to do so, accelerating expulsion of Palestinians forced outnumbered/outgunned Arab state armies to intervene in Palestine on April 15.

Despite the British attacks on German cities, the Luftwaffe did not begin to attack military and economic targets in the UK until six weeks after the campaign in France was concluded....
In World War II approximately 410,000 German civilians were killed by Allied air raids. From July 1944 to January 1945, an average of 13,536 people were killed every month. In Hamburg alone about 49,000 civilians were killed by Allied bombing, and in Berlin about 35,000

Some facts in this video are wrong, and probably based on some kind of an attempt to look neutral.
For example, not many people lived in Israel. Jews who did live in Arab cities lived while hiding their identity as Jews, until more Jews returned to Israel (From mid East or Russia, not Europe) and they decided to regroup and re-settle away from those cities that were dense and poor.
The map showing in the beginning is very inaccurate, that it's purpose it to show how some nation randomly decided to steal land. To pull this kind of a genius trick, you have to be a mastermind surrounded by other masterminds. Before the world wars, Jews lived well in Europe as the loyal citizens of the countries they have been, they would fight for their countries.
Long story short: They had no reason to leave Europe. But they still did, and moved into the land of Zion (Zion = Jerusalem) joining their brothers who were lucky enough not to be exiled. This move started way before World War 2 or World War 1, and the prays for returned were prayed for over 2000 years ago, when the Jews lost their second temple.

What's frustrating is that ignorant westerners don't realize the conflict in the Middle East is between two brothers, the Arabs/Muslims and Jews.
While Jews have a sliver of land, Arabs occupy all the rest of the Middle East. And the radical islamic ones are hellbent on Israel's annihilation, because as the only true democracy in the Middle East that values human rights and liberty, they stand in the way of radical Islam/sharia law ruling, which is why they call for global jihad to subjugate the whole world to their religion.

2 things; Britain had control over Palestine after ww2 (or ww1, i cant remember). This means that what happened to Palestine was under direct command from Britain, and not some random tenant saying "ok it's time to kick you out now!".
Secondly: You claim to not care about the history yet you say it is rightfully your land. This comment alone makes no sense, as you being rightfully entitled to a land would have had roots in history. I just wanted to say that the rightful claim from either side (jews and palestinians) is rather disputed, as you can argue for both sides.
Lastly i want to agree on your statement that i could watch something that was more biased the other way around. You are absolutely correct with that statement and "me" 5 years ago should have known that.

A Jewish scholar named Norman Finklestein wrote two books about this. One was about how it is used daily in Israeli/American politics to dismiss legitimate criticisms of Israel, and the other was about how Zionism used latent guilt of Western nations from the holocaust to help create a Jewish state. He himself is referred to as a "self-hating Jew" because of his lifelong fight against Zionism.

My great grandparents were Jewish. They and as far as they could remember all lived in Europe. You're DNA is probably more European than you might think. Same with your parents. Your home is in Europe. Give the land up or share it and don't call it Israel. Theodore Herzl even was open to Israel being located in Argentina.

Sending their military into the internationally recognized land of another to ethnically cleanse them in the "settlement policy" is not an attempt to make peace.

It is no different than any of the other crusades, only more protracted. As for the time, right now and every day since around the 1920s. The Israeli government has ultimately decided the cost of a few of its citizens blown off the face of the Earth every few years are worth the permanent aquisition of land. Interestingly, you used to be able to see the Israeli bulldozers illegally clearing away Palestinian villages to make their own on google images, but it has since been removed.

@@daniolivia5032 I also want to say thank you. Having civil discourse with someone who disagrees with me on this matter is exceedingly rare these days. There is nothing that would make me happier, after all the centuries of tragedy, to see the people of the Jewish faith have a land of their own where they can live in peace and practice self determination. It is my belief that not anti-semitism, Islamic extremism, nor Palestinian nationhood present the greatest threat to this dream, but instead it is the current practices of the Israeli government. I would offer the same advice to a Palestinian, who in his frustration, sought to fire a rocket in the direction of Israel. Using violence and hatred to achieve their goal is suicidal to their cause. If Isreal rightfully demands self determination and the right to exist, why shouldn't Palestine?

    - While the name of this organization is "Jewish Voices for Peace," it is not interested in confronting the human rights violations, violence, or war in the rest of the Middle East. The disingenuous name represents the organization well.
    - 4/5th of "Historic Palestine" belongs to the Arabs, the nation of Jordan.
    - Millions of Jewish refugees who fled to Israel were expelled from Arab and Moslem nations, places in which they had lived before the Moslem conquest.
    - Peace has been offered to the Arabs/Palestinians many times over 80 years by the British, the UN and Israel and the Arabs/Palestinians always refused.

Despite being presented as fact, there are many inaccuracies in this version of the foundation of the state of Israel. Inaccuracies which, of course, pose a pro-Palestine position. Please, I challenge you to post a more accurate, and historically correct version, and let's see how well this works for your campaign. I am in support neither side, but prefer that if you are going to attempt to gain support for a cause, that it is done using historically valid fact.

You can't handle the truth. Even Israeli historians not only agree with this narrative of the founding of Israel, but they paint a picture of the Zionists which is even more shameful.
