The new documentary Israelism examines the growing generational divide among Jewish Americans on the question of Palestine, with many younger Jews increasingly critical of Israel and less supportive of Zionism. Simone Zimmerman, one of the protagonists of the film and a co-founder of the group IfNotNow, says she grew up being told that supporting Israel was central to her Jewish identity, but that collapsed once she visited the Occupied Palestinian Territories and saw the system of apartheid under which millions live. “It’s so deeply contrary to our values as Jewish people to support this disgusting oppression and denial of freedom,” she says. We are also joined by Erin Axelman, co-director and one of the producers of Israelism, who says Zimmerman’s journey mirrors their own and those of many other young Jews who realize they “must fight for the freedom and equality of Palestinians while also fighting antisemitism.” The film is on a 40-city screening tour in Canada and the United States after previous efforts to ban the screenings on several campuses.

I am a Jew and have never experienced any anti-semitism. I am incredibly priveleged and no victim. I am tormented about the torture done to Palestinans. That is my pain. Palestinian suffering. Last Ramadan Eid day several young Jewish people volunteered to serve breakfast at our Islamic center. It was a very heartening feeling for us all. They said, “enjoy your Eid”. What a wonderful way to spread love and respect for people of different faiths. Thank you. 🙏

Re: "literal calls for genocide" There were no literal calls for genocide, Stefanik was technically referring to a hypothetical situation, in order to silence free speech. In the same hearing, it was pointed out that according to FIRE, Harvard is at the bottom when it comes to protecting free speech (so much for 'left wing').

You're simply pretending to be outraged over nothing. The students were not calling for genocide - they were charging Israel with genocide, and pro-Israelis changed the subtitles on the videos. Gay didn't "refuse" to condemn genocide, she called it "abhorrent", she was asked if calls for genocide violated Harvard's code of ethics, and it depends on context. Same question goes to bill of rights: Is calling for genocide within first amendment rights? Turns out, yes. If Harvard's code of ethics doesn't make exceptions, that's not the fault of the presidents.
By silencing the protestors, you silence free speech and technically, support genocide.

I am friends with a Jewish woman who spent this last Christmas season alone for the first time after their family disowned them for questioning Israel's war in Gaza. They live in California, but the family firmly chose to support Israel rather than allow her to question whether Israel was committing crimes. The family removed my friend from their health insurance, and when my friend needed an urgent wisdom tooth operation a few months later she had to go to Mexico to get it done because the uninsured costs were too high in California. Her family refused to even consider helping her.
For a large portion of the Jewish community, Israel comes first even if you don't live there, and not even family is as important. Jewish people whose consciences compel them to break ranks are required to be incredibly brave and resilient because they risk hatred not just from anti-Jew racists (who definitely exist) but also from their own families and former community (called self-hating Jew, traitor, etc.) Jews making such a difficult decision to make sure they stay on the right side of history get a lot of respect from me and are very meaningful allies in the fight for a more ethical Middle East.

There are political divisions even within the government of Israel. That’s what I don’t understand about this sentiment. Clearly, Israeli officials can criticize each others’ actions, so is that antisemitism?
Historically speaking, there is a fine line between “criticism of Jews” and “full blown genocide”. So you tell me where we get to draw this line? I’m sure the average civilians in Germany did not really think their criticism of Jews would lead to an all out Holocaust. But it fucking did.

My father was a fierce Zionist well into his early 90's. As a critic of Zionism and Israel occupation I had many arguments with him. Excellent information. I hope you are posting it widely. I certainly will. I think people fail to understand the importance of ICJ rulings because the ICJ has no enforcement mechanism. But, in fact, rulings by the ICJ can trigger laws in individual countries that prohibit aiding governments that grossly violate human rights. This does not mean that countries will automatically enforce the laws prohibiting aid, but the laws allow citizens to bring lawsuits and to force judgments. Additionally, individual Israelis can find themselves on sanctions lists and can be indicted for war crimes. This is not a remedy for the suffering and deaths of the Palestinians right now, but it is part of the attempt to disincentivize human rights abuses.

As a side note, Taylor Swift and Selina Gomez give to charities that are supposed to help Gazan children, but most of these organizations are going to the pockets of Hamas. The entire world would support the Palestinians in a major way but like screaming children, their leaders demand everything they want. This 12 year old girl called Dunia Abu Mohsen still struck in my memory as I watched her interview after she lost one of her leg and her family in Israel bombing. 2/3 weeks later, as she was recovering in Nasser hospital in Gaza , she was killed by Israeli bombing of that hospital.

As someone who currently is here. We live with absolute uncertainty. You could be a garbage collector or a tech at some local company or even a farmer and without warning you would be raided and taken. They can and do keep you usually for 6months or more without charge. You could be shot at or shot and nothing absolutely nothing would happen.
