  • Neuroception is our nervous system's ability to automatically determine whether our environment is dangerous, safe, or neutral. It then tells our body what type of arousal will best help us to survive and adapt in that situation. We can be in hyperarousal - danger, high arousal - safety, low arousal - safety, or hypoarousal - danger. In between is our optimal level of arousal called the Window of Tolerance. If we have a history of trauma or attachment difficulties, we might have "false alarms" where we neurocept danger when a situation is not currently dangerous, and our Window of Tolerance might be small.
In this Sensorimotor Psychotherapy video, Dr. May will describe these concepts in more detail so that we can get better at recognizing when we are in each state. This is a first step toward learning how to "widen" our Window of Tolerance so that we feel safe and comfortable more of the time.

Fk.... This is so me. Thank you for helping me to figure out what's going on with me. The only thing I can't figure out is why I don't have any thoughts at all? During hyper or hypo states. I hardly am in my window of tolerance, it's always either extreme. I can't think or focus. I don't have any thoughts. I think the obky thoughts that come up are really just my traumas coming into my conscious awareness. I hate being like this. I just want my life to go back to normal. Thank you for sharing this xxx it's so very helpful.

I am sorry to hear you are suffering from chorionic hyper and hypo states. In addition to TRE, perhaps some of the other Sensorimotor Psychotherapy exercises might work for you. Maybe give them a try and see if it starts to make a difference… I’d be interested to know if you find them helpful.

I'm definitely hypo. Definitely. I'm weak. No thoughts. For a long time I had to play dead in real life in order to survive. I'm doing TRE for 2 years now and I'm still struggling to get out of it.

The closest thing to this is the freeze response, which is like stepping on the gas pedal and brakes at the same time. It involves being revved up on the inside but still on the outside.
