Hi, my name is Lenny Castro. I play percussion on this song. I never knew it would be so popular. It’s such an honor that the new generation appreciates this tune. It still amazes me. I was blessed to be on it. Thanks so much
Her smile about said it all, didn't it? I have loved this song since I first heard it as a freshman in high school, and it's been a go-to track whenever I've been in need of a pick-me-up. Appreciation & gratitude!
This song has launched many generations of Peace Corps Volunteers to various countries in Africa. So many of us try to imagine a place we've never been, just like the person in the song. I've served in Peace Corps Ghana and Sierra Leone now. I still love this song, and listen to it regularly. Of course now, I have many CD's of various local music. Your drumming is outstanding. We all love Toto for this song.
Great reaction ❤ as someone who has been listening to Toto since the late 70s they are one of my top bands(Chicago Steely Dan Rush are the others) Studio musicians (Steve Lukather David Paich and Jeff Pocaro - RIP) decided to do their own music and the rest is history... They are still touring to this day including Steve and David🔥
Loved your reaction and comments Rere!❤ This song came out a couple of years after I traveled to the Ivory Coast with a friend from there. When we landed it was raining and my friend said it was a sign of good luck. So the lyrics "I bless the rains down in Africa" bring back wonderful memories of my time there. I hope you're able to go one day. Another song from Toto you'll enjoy is Rosanna.
The songwriter was watching a late-night documentary on missionaries in Africa - how they would bless the land and the rains. That’s where the inspiration came from.
@@psiclone23 Actually, David Paich mentioned in a CBS Sunday Morning interview that his inspiration for Africa came from reading copies of Reader’s Digest, not from watching anything on TV.
@@thomashesson7058 - Hmm, I’ve seen interviews (more than two at least) where the late-night documentary was spoken about, and nothing about a Reader’s Digest connection - unless they were the ones producing the documentary. I’ll look more in to his interviews (including the one you mention) to see where the variance is.
Banger! I've loved this song & their song Rosanna since I was a kid. It was watching UA-cam music reactors that I found out about another great song they have: Hold The Line & now I like it. They have a bunch of other songs that I need to listen to. Although I love all kinds of music, I was born in 1974, but consider myself an '80s child. I love '80s music!
so take at the time, the best of the best studio musicians, put them in a band and let them do hit after hit after hit. Toto was essentially a super group. this song in particular is usually a great way to test musicianship due to its complexities and odd quirks. I've heard this song so much that when I viewed the video on YT that showed each instrument isolated, my brain could fill in what was missing to the point that it felt like I wasn't just listening to the isolated instrument tracks. its a great watch by the way.
Toto is what you get when a bunch of incredibly talented studio musicians get together and make their own songs, instead of recording perfect versions of everybody else's music for them.
Speaking of Africa, Paul Simon went to Africa and did a very African influenced album. There is a great video of him performing with some African musicians/performers. Check out the live version of "Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes". It's some great cross-cultural stuff.
As a musician Toto is a band you want to look deeper into . They were Comprised of a group of L.A.'s top studio musicians in the late 70's , that had a series of BIG radio hits going into the 80's . They can rock out hard on a song like "Hold the Line" , be smooth as silk on a song like "Georgy Porgy" or nail a straight up love song like "Rosanna" , which keyboardist David Paitch wrote for his then girlfriend , actress Rosanna Arquette . That note leads me to suggest a fun related movie of hers , "Desperately Seeking Susan" which was Madonna's debut movie as an actress . Madonna plays the role of Susan and it wasn't really an acting stretch for her because her character "Susan" seemed to be derived directly from Madonna's persona .
Hello Angela , am just following the selected theme of storytelling , so am not sure , but you might find this story : ( Corb Lund - Truck Got Stuck ) a bit of fun , cause it had an unexpected plot line twist ...
Written by David Paich and the late Jeff Porcaro. Paich on keyboards and vocal in the verses. Bobby Kimball on vocals in the chorus. In the same year, members of Toto worked with Michael McDonald, Donna Summer, Chicago and the late Michael Jackson. Members of Toto worked like a dog 🐕! L 🤣L Suggested videos 📹: 1 Chicago performs Hard to Say I'm Sorry. 2 The Tubes perform She's a Beauty 3 Bryan Adams sings Please Forgive Me 4 Michael Jackson sings Beat It.
I think you would enjoy the music from Boston..." More Than a Feeling", " Don't Look Back", " Foreplay/Longtime", " Rock and Roll Band". Boston was cutting edge in there sound back in the 70's.
Great song, never get tired of listening to this. Please can you do a reaction to Jackie Wilsons "The Sweetest Feeling", an old Mowtown classic that was re-released in the 1980s and was one of the songs I walked to school humming to every day for a few months.
This entire album is an absolute masterpiece. What's wild is that this track is the tenth - and last - track on the LP, where you might expect to find a throw-in or filler track.. but no, it turned out to be Toto's biggest hit. In constant rotation on MTV back in the day. Good times!
Well @jeff names the one and only song I like of this band! The video was as cohesive as the song. I've always liked the chorus!! Also I only heard what they played on the radio! SOOO a radio is this box we plug in the wall and,,,,, 😊 Joking!! Great Reaction Rere! HOLD THE LINE! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Love your reactions. So lucky for you discovering all this amazing music for the first time. Some suggestions Rem losing my religion. Waterboys the whole of the moon .Tracy Chapman baby can I hold you.
Hold The Line Rossana are other big hits they made ..Boz Skaggs had them for his band before they left to form the band ..Chek out''' Lido Shuffle''' by Boz .it gets views
Why is your thumbnail has you with your hair down, but the video is slicked back...? I am a hairdresser and am curious, Like the down look very much!!!!!
First, check out a cover of this under the name Italian Artists. They add strings, several talented vocalists, it is an absolute slam to the heart. Second, this song was inspired by a teacher of one of the band members. He was a missionary in Africa, and fell in love with a local woman..."Frightened of this thing that I've become" because this is forbidden. And yeah, for a place that has a million ways to kill you, it has much beauty and is our birthplace.

The drummer, Jeff Porcaro, is in my opinion, one of the most talented musicians ever! R.I.P. Jeff!

Excellent harmonies, vocals and great instrumentation. What a tune
This video played almost every hour on MTV back when they actually played music videos.

Great Reaction!! I've visited Africa a few times.(Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya, Tunisia, and Egypt! Every place has its beautiful sites!! 🌍
Such an '80s anthem!
For some reason, this song appeals to my soul.
Thanks you for your réaction. "Hold line" and "Rosanna" are the two others classics from toto...
Absolutely Love this Song. Great Reaction. And yes , the lyrics told an interesting Story. Love the Song. Not Crazy about the Video!

TOTO is an "Elite" Band!!! Please react to "Hold The Line" and "Rosanna" by TOTO and you will understand why they are "Elite!!!"
I LIKED you let the whole song play before your reaction! Thank you! I love your accent and your look!

Love your reaction-This song definitely made an emotional connection to Africa, that is so beautiful
Definitely recommend Toto Hold the line or on the subject of Africa Labi Siffre (Something Inside) So strong or Peter Gabriel - Biko x
Great to have you and a member of Toto on here. Rosanna is also one of Toto’s best. Lenny would appreciate that too.

Check out Hall and Oates or Little River Band, they got somewhat of the same vibe as Toto.
Interesting that you should pick up on that...there is a connection....
It's one of them records you can't not like.
For a bit of fun check out the somewhat viral at the time "Africa Mike Masse Jeff Hall" - basically two guys in a pizza joint showing what is possible
I think you would enjoy the music from Boston..." More Than a Feeling", " Don't Look Back", " Foreplay/Longtime", " Rock and Roll Band". Boston was cutting edge in there sound back in the 70's.
80's songs always sound that extra little bit better because they are from the 80's
Great song, never get tired of listening to this.

...did a cover of this song, and it's better than the original.
It's a very popular video on their UA-cam channel.
There's a pretty good metal version of this song on UA-cam too.
Chris deburgh did an awesome cover of Africa check it oit
Now do Weezer's version of Africa!
Hello. Good song, but to get the full track, listen to the LP version; the video cuts off the intro and outro. From the same LP, "Rosanna" is killer.
hold the line
Rosanna, by toto
Awesome video/ can you please react to the avett Brothers. Headfull of doubt/ road full of promise.
amo reaçao de voces gostaria que reagisse, Gabriel Henrique "Vision of Love" ( Mariah Carey Cover) | Couples Reaction!
