Hi Stuart - thanks for your videos...I have a question...near the end you left the long shoot, because you needed a new leader...why did you need a new leader? I'm new to this, and have just started with espalier pruning, so excuse me if it's a bit obvious! :) Thanks again..
@@andrewsflicks7920 that’s no problem and thank you for commenting. I need a new leader so that the tree continues to grow and create another row of branches. Once the rows reach the top of the fence, I’ll be pruning out the leaders to ensure the tree doesn’t get too tall.
As they are recently planted I would leave them until next year to prune. That way you haven’t stressed the plant before it’s established a good root system
So if you prune after the second bud will that lateral get longer each year since you will prune after the second bud year after year to the new growth?
@@BourneToAllotment Could this be done long term with a dwarf mulberry? I've seen young tree on line but no older mulberry trees done this way, like 10 year old.
What type of tree is this? I am starting an espalier persommon. Do you have any ideas how they should be pruned? I understand different fruit trees grow fruit differently and its not as simple as snipping off the branches that dont follow the pattern we want them to grow in.
These are apple and pear trees. That’s a great idea, they like sheltered and in a warm spot and so growing them against a wall makes sense. They don’t like a lot of pruning, so avoid removing a lot of growth each year, but if you have the patience then this technique will also works.

I have dwarf fruit trees that I planted in patio containers this year. Should I prune them now too?

Makes sense. Thank you 😊

It will, but then you prune the lateral to length that you desire

@Carperama absolutely, though you should need to do less pruning with a Mulberry

Can you grow custard apple as espalier tree, please?
To be honest, I’ve not heard of custard apples grown in this way, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able. Maybe give it a go
