Thanks for making this video. This is the second time ive watched it and it looks a bit easier to understand than the first time i watched it. I already have a step over, and i think I've totally pruned it wrong. I hope it recovers. 2 of my apple trees started to blossom after the summer pruning this year. I think itvwas the weather . Would you winter prune your customers espalier also please?
@@apperleygardenservices6124 Any more tips & tricks for pruning would be fantastic! Or best practices to start training a whip. Do you also do garden designs? Showing the overall design for yards would be fun. Really any information you want to share would be very helpful especially since I'm just starting a small backyard orchard.
@@jenn6838 ok cool. 👌 Let me have a think. I'm still rubbish at filming myself in people's gardens haha. I'll just have to face my fear! Thank you for your input :) I have a big Wisteria and a grape vine to prune soon so maybe I could film those.
I've got conflicting information when to prune the espalier tree....I was told to prune in the winter or early spring to help control the shape and early summer (and not late summer or early fall) to control size. You mentioned to prune in late summer.....what is the reason for that?
I've always done it then, because the tree is slowing down. Pruning when a tree is dormant (in my experience) leads to a burst of new growth in the Spring which you don't necessarily want in espallier trees. By late summer, the tree is getting ready for dormancy, and by spring, energy will go straight into the fruiting spurs, rather than trying to make new branches.
@@apperleygardenservices6124 Now that makes sense....I had an incredible growth on some of those thin branches, some up to 4 feet in length...thank you for the advice

Hi, great video thank you.
May I ask which variety of tree you use and which rootstock?
Your tree looks good
Thank you!
отличное видео, спасибо!
Should you trim in late August you’re apple trees in their 1st year after planting for an espalier
Is it planted as an espalier? Or are you training a new tree?

Hi first time going to try this.. are you using a stainless steel wire for the espalier..???
Hi there! This is 2mm galvanised steel rope. Good luck 👍 let me know how you get on! :)
Your garden is not small at all
No, but they are a good option for growing fruit in a small garden.
