Thank you for such a clear and practical instruction - I'm thinking of doing some espalier fruit trees for our back garden. You've shown it's possible. Every good wish from Scotland.

Espalier seemed so daunting before I watched this! I am hoping to replace my fence with an espalier orchard in a few years.
What is the name of the hardware that is holding the turn buckles out from the 4x4s?

The sprouts that you cut off back to the cordon. Arent those supposed be headed to stimulate the fruiting wood. I didnt see many buds.

Some people over here dont cut succers 100%, they leave it 3 to 4 buds, or if June leaves, in hope to give it a chance to turn into fruiting wood next season. Thank you for explaining the fine work you did

Do you mean water sprouts? Suckers come from the base and should always be removed - they're from the rootstock.

Thanks for information. Can this method be applied to plum trees?

Just wondering how you keep stone fruit fruiting? I thought blossoms only come on 2 year old wood?

My apples and pear espalier are in their first spring/summer after planting them in late winter. I have been training two horizontal first tiers as they grow and leaving a central leader. The first tier is growing well. Its now mid summer. I have some branch growth coming off the two trained laterals and some off the central leader. Should I be summer pruning in the first year on my first tier laterals? Is mid summer too late for that? I have one pear which has produced a few laterals off the central leader at a tier two height. Should I train those now or is it best to cut the central leader back in winter to start the next tier from fresh? Thanks

How do you keep it from getting taller once it has reached your desired height?

Here is a segment that we did back in 2015 that shows what a water sprout looks like: ua-cam.com/video/YV9_kvMfvfE/v-deo.html

I'm terrified bc I read if you cut one water sprout, 50 come back. She did not seem intimidated. Why?
