why are they advertising on loads of car channels at the moment. Dodgy company.
These guys are infamous for making it hard to cancel their service, don't be fooled.
@@Stoyon Indeed. I enjoyed the video but downvoted due to the channel selling their soul and advertising Beer52!
That music is a modern version of ENJOY THE SILENCE ain't it?
@@Stoyon I cancelled my subscription about 2 years ago, they still post stuff trying to get me to re-join.
It’s weird seeing the Stig talk to me in the car instead of listening to “Falco” on the radio while driving it.
Alles klar Herr Kommissar
Awesome tho right

Ben Collins is just terrific, great mix of natural charm, deep knowledge and zero BS
Natural charm... 😂
@@richardhammer187 Yeah, something you clearly don't understand, Mr Bland-Comment...
He feels like a more chill version of automotive Gordon Ramsey, genuinely amazing bloke. I could listen to him for an entire day talk about this stuff.
He's have made a great presenter on that Top Gear show they used to have on the BBC.
...er....
All the respect to Ben for his driving ability and what he could do on the Top Gear track, but watching this tells me we were robbed of a compelling and knowledgeable on-camera presenter!
Nahh, if you do that you'll be going back to the old top gear format and you wouldn't be watching it!
He also wasn’t the first person to be the Stig, that was Perry McCarthy.
well he told his points to clarkson and then he would pump them out to 11, which makes me wonder what a revisit of all the cars he slagged off would be now
as it was funny, every car clarkson hated I liked and it latter turned out they turned out to be damn good cars.
@@jshanson04xdSpeak for yourself, I ALWAYS prefer the pre-CHM Top Gear. It's the reason I also watch Fifth Gear.
How can you say we were robbed of an onscreen present? Its exactly what hes doing now
0:10 I love how they used the same song of 'Enjoy the silence' (by Depeche Mode+Mike Shinoda) that they did in the original TopGear review. It was the first time I discovered that track and loved listening to it ever since!
I wondered about the Linkin Park feel to the cover
It took me a few seconds to figure out what song it was, but now I understand why I kept thinking it was a Linkin Park track! Need to check out this version of it for sure, thanks!
It's not quite the same though. It's Enjoy The Silence alright, but someone seems to have remade it in the exact same style that Shinoda did. I suppose they could afford to pay Depeche Mode but not Mike :P
Cars like this and the Fiesta ST will probably be valuable classics in the future as Hot Hatches are sadly being replaced by dreary electric suv coupes
I have to disagree. The original GTI's are much more rare and still just barely qualify as collector cars.
It's very rare for a vehicle based on an economy platform to become a collector car - homologation specials not withstanding.
@@WallstreetavariceThe originals in good condition are pricey. And now you wont be able to buy new versions.
@Wallstreetavarice the mk1 and mk2 gti are rare because of how old they are and many were scrapped years ago or taken off the road. The mk5 will go the same way with how many are left by the same age due to many being ragged or poorly looked after
SUVs are the death knell of small fun hatchbacks.
@@Lewis_Treff97 Correct - I have a MK5 GTI as my 2nd car, first one I bought with my own money - wanted a non rust bucket with a manual and the classic tartan seats - took me 3 months to find one after looking nearly every day and touring the country every weekend. The dream spec was a white two door with the tartan and a manual 'box but they are rarer than rocking horse shit, let alone finding one in good condition. I "settled" for a silver 4 door with the tartan seats and a manual - bought the car on 80,000 miles and it is completely unmodified.
It is borderline rare..
I love that you used the music from the original Top Gear film on the GTI!
Cupra was a MK4 GTI platform. The one shown in this video anyway. Had a 1.8 20v whereas the MK5 golf has a 2.0 tfsi
Exactly, and the same with the Audi S3 that appears in the video.
Just pictures everyone knows which ones they are referring to
Love that they used Mike Shinoda's remix of Enjoy the Silence as it was used in the original review of the car on Top Gear ❤
still my favourite version
@@Dirpitz It's brilliant. And it's not even on many music streaming services.
I had a MkV GTi for 6 years and I ADORED it! It's still the car I compare every other car against. Losing it was one of the saddest days of my life... I actually cried a bit. Miss you buddy 😇
Buy another one then!
I have this car. In white. Two door. Manual. 2009. With the classic cloth seats. Best car I've ever owned
So many vids on how iconic and brilliant the mk5 GTI is. Easy to see why I haven’t replaced mine in the ten+ years I’ve owned it.
To me, that felt very Top Gear. Thanks for sharing Drivetribe!
I was hoping it was the W12 one.
Wasn't there only one, VW made for Wörthersee?
The episode that featured on is permanently etched into my brain in its entirety, as I had it downloaded on my iPod nano from a code in an edition of top gear magazine. I must’ve watched it a hundred times
It's concept car not mass produced
Same here
@@jimboh.2654 kinda like the Baja version of the bug, which they should have made, as that would have been fun, or even the 1.8 turbo beetle, the snap orange version
Just bought my first ever GTI. It’s a mark 7. It’s a fun run around /commuter for when it’s too wet to ride. Traded in a Mustang GT for it, and although there was a part of me that thought I may have regrets, the Golf is waaaaaaay more fun than the Mustang! I am in love with the car!!!!
MK5 original owner of over 15 years. That original Top Gear segment with Clarkson sold me on the car sight unseen, before it even came to North America. And it's in my driveway to this day, a bit worse for wear with an entire dash full of warning lights, but still hanging on. 🙂
Warning lights are a badge of honor on that car
20 years ago, on S5E6 of Top Gear, they used Mike Shinoda's Enjoy The Silence as one of their songs while reviewing this car
Time passed, the world changed but as much as I can see, (old) Top Gear isn't as dead as we might think.
I am still amazed that the argument for the Stig was that they could not find a racing driver that could talk well to camera and then they choose Ben as stig :)
Great video and a lovely car. Have driven both mk5 and mk7 GTIs and prefer the 5 tbh. Not as fast or polished but the steering feel makes it so much more engaging.
I've had my MK5 for 12 years now. Still one of my fav. cars. Great video!
I saw this on Top Gear when i was 9-10 and i’ve loved them ever since. I’ve had one and I own a MK7 now but the MK5 will always have a special place in my heart. Hopefully i’ll have another one!
Stig driving a car that looks like Stig's helmet, and a Depeche Mode remix soundtrack - feels like an old-school TG video :)
Its really wild to look at this car knowing it's 20 years old... it aged very well, you can see the 80's ooze from 80's cars but this thing still looks brand new.
I loved that review. Would be nice to see more reviews of cars Ben drove in his Top Gear days
I like the fact that they use music from the video clarkson made when he reviewed the car when it was new. Such a subtle yet cool throw back. Ben is a great presenter and should definitely be included /considered for a revised top gear in a few years after people have had a chance to miss it. Original fans and many new ones would flock back to it.....I believe hey would anyway
The song in the intro is the same song that was used in Clarkson's original road test of the MK5 on Top Gear. Fantastic little detail.
Would love to see a similar look back at a Clio 172/182. Iconic drivers car of the same era. Very cool TG review of a racing blue 182 back in the day
I'd love to see this too. That review was one of the reasons that made me want one. I still have mine after 9 years of ownership and still love it. I always remember Clarksons Impression of it growling at you.
The value of these cars will now go up.
I do not comment much but it is nice to see @drivetribe using the same bit of Enjoy the Silence that they originally used on that Top Gear episode 20 years ago.
Well done to the editing team!
Wow, what a clean example! Great insight and review from Ben. It made me super nostalgic.
The mk5 GTI is such an iconic car...the modern version of the mk1 if you will. I owned a mk5 & a mk7 and they were so enjoyable. Sadly, VW has lost its way and doesn't seem to care about the driver crowd anymore. Really tragic to think they used to make fantastically fun vehicles 😢
This era of cars are the best. Everything you want no bs
Ben, you have to drive the Holden (Vauxhall) Monaro & the VXR8 & see how it stacks up today please!
Wow, the instant nostalgia hit of that intro track taking you right back to Clarkson's review in 2004.
Thanks for the great video on the GTI mk 5.
As a 2016 mk7 owner since 2017, saved significant cash buying a Lease return. Only 8500 miles on it. It now has 75k plus now. Its been a great utility driver for me, i even made a round trip from western USA back to the west. A 7700 mile trek with out any issues.
Enough... i agree with your assessment Of both GTIs.
I have a mk5 today and I'm still in love with it because that engine has soo much potential. Mine is running at 340bhp and has been for over 4 years and has never put a foot wrong. And one of the best feelings you can have is to see the look on someone's face when you trash them in their brand new golf R. Great car and less tec to go wrong.
Wow , how did you get it to 340 bhp 👍
@@groupb5420 propably just bigger turbo, intercooler, upgaded air intake and exhaust and tune.
I have the 06 mk5 "rabbit" version with less than 100k miles. Garage kept. Punished in the parking lot. I did an ECU tune and removed the rev limiter etc and it is even more fun to drive! I'm keeping it forever
Awesome to see stig giving us all this nostalgia!
These have aged really well for being 20 years old. I do really like them and I remember my dad wanting one after driving a couple of them. Although now my dad has a mk7 gti while i have a mk3 cupra which i enjoy on these types of roads too
Great vid - remember my mate from work getting one on loan and us all going for a blast at lunchtime. Nice watch aswell Ben!
I feel that one of the hot hatches that aren't that talked about is the Fiat Stilo. Came with a 2.4 NA 5 cylinder and quite modern styling. I may be a bit bias as mine has been running like a charm and is still able to put the power down but they really are quite slept on, at least here in NZ.
I have an '18 Mk VII as a daily driver and I can see myself hanging on to it for a very long time. It has Stage 1 tuning and once the warranty expires (late next year) I'll definitely entertain the idea of taking it to Stage 2. Love it.
This era of hot hatches (early to mid 2000s ) will never be beaten. This, the Astra VXR , Focus ST , Mégane 225, Civic Type R, etc are just peak hot hatch fun
Great video, more of this style please!
Great video awesome seeing Ben Collins on the channel
Civic Type-R for trackdays, Focus ST for daily use for this gen of hothatches. Golf had more electronics and didn't deactivate.
Lovely blast from the past! 🤩 I'd love to see the same thing done with the OG Ford Puma ❤
This is a great shout!!
I remember, when watching TG, thinking "Wouldn't it be great to hear Stig's opinion on the cars he's driving? It's too bad they don't have him speak." Well, it's 20 years later - better late than never. More of these? Yes, please!
Is the song in the beginning sorta like enjoy the silence by Depeche mode
It is the Mike Shinoda remix
I love they edited the first bit like the old top gear with Nike Shinoda's enjoy the silence 😊
Seriously, the Mk5 got me to love VW's, such character and fun. Mine had an APR K04 kit that I unknowingly bought it with and it was a complete riot. Of course it had its issues and left me stranded 2-3 times but it wasn't enough to shy me away from it.
One of the best car reviews I've seen, we were robbed off this talent
Its time to hand it over to our tame racing driver ...
Some say..He sleeps upside down and he edits his own family photos
All we know is he's called the Stig
😂
Ben Collins is the best car reviewer, a little jumpy from topic to topic, but everything he says is just pure knowledge and understanding of the machine
Probably makes more sense before they edit it. It's like making a joke and cutting out parts of the build-up.
Better than Clarkson, Needell, Hammond, May, Harris...don't talk nonsense!
Never thought Harris talks nonsense. He's tough to beat. Maybe Catchpole is up there with him.
Excellent work Ben! What next? I’d advocate for a review of the subsequent generation of hot hatches: Golf VII, Megane 265, Civic Type R, so on.
I have driven a GTi MK5 so I totally agree to have this one as one of the best hot hatches back on the day
Interesting what he's saying about the early 2000s and an 'analog experience' - i feel like this is true for most products not just cars. By the late 2000s and 2010s, everything had computer chips all over them and are now harder to fix, maintain and connect with
I own a C63s and my daily is a mk6 GTI, I love the GTI just as much as the C63s. It does everything right, the engine is fun (mapped to 260hp), its easy to ride and the seats and seating position is perfect.
Loved this
I love how in the intro they used the same song from the Top Gear segment.
Would love to see you do the 306 GTI-6!
Great nostalgic review Ben 😊I'm a former owner (probably future too, as I'm unhappy with my Volvo) of a MK2 Skoda Octavia, which is on the same platform as this. Mine was a lowly 1.4 TSI, but the chassis was GREAT. Honestly, the whole car was great. I would love to own their version of this, a vRS.
Leon Cupra next review please. That's when Cupra name was a proper hot hatch!
Clarkson was right, the world moved slower in the 80’s, 90’s & 2000’s.
Starting 2010’s with the internet and social media, everything became fast paced and time went quicker. Nobody stops to enjoy the moment anymore
Onto my 3rd mk5 Gti and I couldn't be happier with it. Now on to a Pirelli Edition with the k04 so a touch more power over the regular Gti. Will likely move to the mk7 platform in the future.
I’ve never owned a Golf, but my wife had a Mk5 Golf Cabrio and of all the cars she has ever owned, that was my absolute favourite. A dream to drive and so much fun, and so comfortable even when being ragged. She replaced it with a SLC and, while faster, just wasn’t as nice to drive,
Great job from Ben in front of the camera! Great car review!!
Did anyone else notice all the flashing warning lights on the dash? 6:52 It's lit up like a Christmas tree.
at the time i drove a 1 liter car with 60hp. now i drive one with a 3 liter v6 with 240hp and awd. kinda like the golf R of the time. so, despite not being anywhere like a golf, i still consider my current car to be like a dream from this era come true.
At the time I Just got my driving license and didn't have a car. Now I drive a 2 liter turbocharged hot hatch, much like the GTI, but it's got 330 hp and a mega chassis. It's definitely a dream. I often just go out for a drive in it at 4:00 AM on deserted mountain roads. Or drive past my home coming back from work, because I want just a little bit more time in it. Nothing better for the soul.
Stig ❤
I had an r32 back in the day and it used to do 14 mpg 😂 unbelievable!
I would of had the focus rs or pretty much any mk1 focus i still believe its the best handling out of them all the right size and weight the corner speed is crazy
Great review 👌. Would love to see a Mk2 Mazda MPS being revisited/ reviewed.
excellent Ben! Would love you see you review a classic Impreza or something which I can’t say I remember you reviewing or Nissan pulsar gtir
make this a series where you drive all the car of the year top gear awards from 2005 to 2015
My first GTI was a 2016 midnight blue two door...standard trans. Fun car.
2004 Golf aged the least. The styling is fantastic.
Nice clip, bros! It vibes like a proper car review from the proper top gear when the GTI was voted car of the year by non other than Jeremy Clarkson himself!
Really enjoyed seeing the Stig driving the GTI, own a GTI myself (7.5) great cars and very underrated here in the USA. I love seeing cars we never got to see here in the USA like the Cupra. Being a former Lancer Evo owner, also would love to see the stig drive the Evo that is getting built right now. Once its done, hand the keys over to the Stig and role the cameras😎
I have a mk5 with the 2.5. Handles amazingly, and if I’m not mistaken, has more torque on the low end. Big fan and I still drive it every day. Has had new suspension and brakes all the way around over the last year so it really does feel good again
awesome car but they have 240nm the GTI has 280 (supposedly, dynoed a stock one for 304nm) at 1800rpm
I’ve the successor to the R32 being the mk6r which shares a similar ea113 platform to the mk5gti. My dad used to have a 5 gti but had the optional tartan hardback wingbacks in it. Seats are probably worth more than most gti’s now lol. Crazy!
Future classic, must be surely!
Ben is multi talented. Not only is he a great presenter but he is also James Bond’s stunt double!
I've got a 2019 gti and absolutely love it
Big up to Ben for shouting out the Leon Cupra!
How about a Ford Mondo? Those guys always seemed to love that car. Obviously test a go fast one! 😂
Great vid, my mum used and abused a mk5 GTI for 10 years and about 150k miles, was faultless.
I would like to thank Ben for speaking to us so much. After all this time silent, it is about time he shares his wisdom.
Love my mk5 golf gti, feels like a new car to drive still in many ways so tight.
Liked the car so much I got the Gli and the R32 just because it feels good day in and out
The first car that I ever drove and decided that the auto box (DSG) was way better than the manual...it blew my mind just what a leap forward that box was!
I`ve has a MK5, a MK6, a MK7.5 and now have a Scirocco R with the DSG, so much better for every day use than a manual...
Proud owner of a mk5 ed30 the ultimate golf in my opinion , great vid
Thank you, Stig.
The bargain modern classic of the moment - drove one for the first time recently and was so impressed- buy one whilst they’re cheap.
I've got a mk4 gti - the 2.0 N/A version - and my 1.2 polo nearly has the same amount of power.
Love a GTI.. I had the 83/84 loved it.
Great video, thanks
My wife has a mk6 golf with a 1.6tdi and automatic gearbox and she absolutely loves it.
I just bought a mk7 gti. It makes me so happy that the stig approves
Fun fact, the mercedes parachute man landed in was driven and owned by the Ben Collins (pre stig collins).
CAN WE SEE BEN IN TOP GEAR’S 2012 and 2013 CARS OF THE YEAR (GT86 and MK7 FIESTA ST)!!!!! Please🙌🏾🙌🏾
Would also love to hear his thoughts on these two cars.
GTI 3 letters that just makes me smile. You should do test of all generations 😊😊
