Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

Mir geht jedes Mal ein Schauer über den Rücken! Es ist unglaublich, was für eine Dynamik, Kraft und Verbundenheit existiert. Das Projekt hat sich ausgezahlt. Klassik meets Rock. Wonderful!
Freddie said she was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen, I agree.
So do I. RIP to both of them.🙏😓🙏
Humildad Montserrat caballet, de padres humildes y trabajadores, .
Una beca le cambio la vida, por ke era y es un gran voz.
Visca Catalunya, la tierra de esta Diva y gran Mujer❤
Everybody is commenting about Freddie but forgetting that Montserrat is legend herself. And she is so underrated.
right i agree :)
She is awesome bu no one can beat freddie mercury
Underrated? By who? aka La Superba.
@aileen wournos this is certainly not your name.
I know zero about Opera, Except the power of the voice it’s equal to no musical instrument I believe it was her graciousness to sing with Freddie mercury who may have been at the top of his Genre - I don’t think anyone in the history of music has ever done anything so beautiful
On last Saturday, my mother has left this planet.

@@MeredithAnne88 Thank you for your kind words!
Clearly she hits notes most people could only dream of...but her TIMING is just bloody impeccable
Their chemistry together is flawless.
Supposedly, it was his approach to her with the idea of the song, how had carefully planned out the song that endeared her to him.
She said the same about Freddie. Her timing is based on Freddies compositions.
Magnifique duo et superbe interprétation de Montserrat Caballé et Freddy Mercury c'est très beau ❤
Her range and delivered effortlessly with such beautiful precision.
One of the 3 great sopranos in her day. She was nicknamed La Superba.
Just as they sang at the end...friends until the end... She adored him and he her. Now they are probably singing together for all the angels to hear.

"And if God willing we will meet again, someday".

I agree with Jane Kirk - this is a monument that will continue to stand. It was also a moment in time.

Barcelona '92 is probably the peak of Olympics as a cultural event
What's also worth noting is that, contrary to some other cities that organised the Olympics, everything built for the event is still in use. The Olympic stadium dated from 1929, and FC Barcelona currently play there. The swimming pool is still in use, and the Olympic Village is now an up-market residential area. There's very much a before and an after 1992 in Barcelona.
In case you're wondering, we took a bus tour yesterday, and this was all explained. Woke up in Ciutat Vella this morning, to the sound of birdsong, and arrived from El Prat just a couple of hours ago.
Agree. The most memorable Olympics event
Two Queens, Two Divas... What a duet!
One of the most memorable moments in music/theatre history.
Underrated comment. I appreciate the creativity.
Sod off calling Freddie Mercury a queen. Dick

Montserrat’s voice is amazing. She fills the whole room with sound. The power of her voice could knock down a wall.
And Freddie stays with her all the way. As someone said, he can sing anything.
Apparently Montserrat Caballé was one of the only people that could match Freddie in the showoff diva department, and Freddie has stated that he was both a fan of her and opera in general. Singing a duet with one of your heroes like that, that man was seriously living the dream.
And he deserved to
Couldn't have said that better myself!😊🥰
He was dying there just imagine if he was fit c
Yes he was. His own personal dream. It makes you believe in hope and all the good things Freddie wrote about. Good post
I saw a documentary from a Japanese channel and Montserrat said there she wouldn't do Barcelona with another one unless she sees someone really special out there
It's the year 2020...and i really think there won't be another duet like this in the history of modern music. Freddie, Montserrat...thank you, forever.
I have to agree and I think it's because no one has ever made such a mix of rock and classic opera.
closest thing we have these days is ed sheeran and Bocelli's Perfect Symphony
No because today's music artists do not know what music's about
True you ca`t find another. Here both can sign.;]

There's a reason why they call Caballe "La Superba"! The queen of opera and the queen of rock n' roll unite!

@@PabloSanchez-rq6krShe died on 6 October 2018
What a gift they left us here ❤..
I almost cry lol, I read this at the same time they sing this part
What makes this thrilling is Freddy's muscular vocals combined with Caballe's beautiful but equally powerful voice. She matches him in sheer firepower, moves like the wind, and can hold a note longer than a mortgage company.
This is a great comment!
@@katrinablackwell5174 Thank you. I'm not an opera specialist, nor much interested in rock music, but they were an inspired duo. It's the magic of the music that brought them together. Freddy said that Monstserrat "IS music", and I have no doubt that this is true for both of them. If only they had recorded more-- Freddy in opera and Caballe in pop music. For them, It's like turning on a faucet, and the music pours out.
"hold a note longer than a mortgage company." ahahahah
@@williamdonahue6617 Well said! Only just noticed the lyrics & song is like a tribute to their collaboration & adoration.
The voice of a soprano is much more powerful than that of any singer. I love Freddie, but MC is another level.
Freddie, this was the song you were born to write.
But Freddie, when you died you took my heart with you and I've never been able to feel again. I'm an empty shell shuffling around. I miss you.

Montserrat adored Freddie and you could see it when they sang together. He adored her too. What a wonderful match!
I thought that. You can just see in her face she is totally enjoying herself being on stage with Freddie
Sad that they were only on playback together. Freddie had voice issues in 1987 at that time.
I love how they were both completely themselves, and at the same time are so comfortable working with someone from such a different musical world. Each of them was a genius and a diva in their own way, yet they shared the stage and worked together seamlessly. This was a moment for the world to treasure.
Couldn't agree more!
That's the power of music and of friendship. As a testament to how close they became on a personal level, she knew about what he was dealing with at the time, and only a small handful of people could claim that.
They almost certainly would have done more work together professionally too if... well, if Freddie had more time. I read somewhere that they wanted to do The Phantom of the Opera.
Agreed!!!
Well said
@@odinfromcentr2 It was meant that they should perform the song at the Olympics in Barcelona but Freddie told her he thought he couldn't make it.He understood she thought he didn't want to so he told her why.She wanted to visit him the last months but he said he wasn't presentable.I think it was a song from Phantom of the opera she had recorded for him she played for him over the phone. And later she sent him the recording.
When I was kid, this didn't really float my boat, but as I grown up, I can give Freddie huge kudos for this project. At the time I remember him saying something like 'I challenge any other rock singer to make an album with a genine opera diva and survive!' - he wasn't wrong - he's totally holding his own with Monserrat, and moreover they're singing his own material. He's doing what he loves and he knows he's doing it damn well!

So many people talking about Freddie (alright) but forgetting about Montserrat is a bit disrespectful to me. I mean, come on. Excellent DUO
adam lambert or axl rose could have too , axl rose have 7 octaves in hes vocal
Not true at all, plenty of contemporary vocalists could easily establish that.
Perhaps the ONLY time Freddie's voice was overcome by another. A Queen of Opera with the Queen of Queen. Majestic.
There was a time when truly phenomenal music was created.
Freddie mercury is the greatest of all time. End of discussion.

@@judithmatthews8460 They became close friends very quickly when they worked together. Both had the utmost respect for the other's musical abilities, even though they were from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, and both were willing and eager to learn from each other. The anecdotes about when they met are adorable - Montsy was rather shy, and had no idea what to expect from this mad rock star, and Freddie was terribly nervous about meeting his favourite singer in the world. Then he began to play the piano, and all that disappeared. She was one of his closest confidantes for the rest of his (tragically short) life. May they be singing together again now.
@@neuralmute I like the story that Freddie was chuffed thinking that they would do one song together and she assumed that they, of course, would do an album. Freddie's like "Gulp, now I have to come up with an album's worth of songs". LOL Tickles me for some reason.
Se fosse vivo andrei in capo al mondo per vederlo!!!!!!
That's when two extraordinary, exceptional talents together have mastered the art to perfection!
