This is Raja Ampat. Majestic MISOOL. Sailing Indonesia (Learning By Doing Ep 99)

- Misool, the last part of Raja Ampat I'd yet to explore, so I sailed the 90 miles south from Sorong. I stop for a night at the small village of Segit and visit the very shy but curious locals there. Next morning I made the crossing over to Misool and spent the last couple of hours before sunset trying to find a safe place to anchor for the night. Misool is maybe the most visually stunning place Ive ever seen and I felt nearly a bit guilty experiencing so much beauty all alone.
Enjoy my views.

Your underwater video was absolutely beautiful. Thank you! Cheers from 🇨🇦
Glad you liked it.
Amazing journey. Great film work.
Thank you!
Great stuff - got the boat, another year or so the job will be quit and I’m on my way! 😃
Rich Guest sweet! Light at the end of the tunnel.
Saw this a couple yrs ago...back for another look. Gorgeous.
Welcome back!
love your posts Vern, absolute heaven mate.
Nice to see pristine coral...
Love your videos, from Andrews, tx 3.5 years left in the desert before we sail away
Yeah Dan, thats something to be looking forward to. Thanks for watching.
Vernon, inspiring video, excellent and mesmerising footage..
"... quit your job and buy a boat and sail there.. "
..yeah! Might just do that in 2022.. (bff & I) look into co-own.. it's exciting just contemplating that..
it is better to experience that with another,
but life is better to share, with someone special .. 1 that wants to experience all the adventure and sea voyages to be had..
Ciao VW
Glad you enjoyed it and yes, sharing these times is pretty special
Simply inspiring!
Cheers Bevan
Living my dream! Good stuff, mate.
Thanks fot take me there, love your videos.
Bravo for adding the extra pressure of managing the drone to your already hectic exit. Awesome footy.
Thanks Ryan. Yeah it was some added pressure from a time point of view but for me to try and explain the process in words alone would have made no sense.
Thank you sooooooo much.
What a ripper of an episode.
I start my new job next month so I will finally be able to jump on board and support you through patreon.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks Mark, congrats on the new job. I'd appreciate your support very much but please only if you have enough left over.
SV Bella Sirena here, Puerto Vallarta, MX, you be doing my top bucket list voyage, inspired.
Awesome, glad youre liking the adventure

Well, Misool is now on on my bucket list!
Some of the best underwater footage I’ve seen on a UA-cam sailing channel
Thanks Jared, all shot on a gopro while free diving.
love the way you use the drone
As someone who has visited Raja Ampat(Kri and Mansuar) before I can imagine how special and breathtaking this place is, truly heaven on earth. Keep living the life and stay safe :)
Yes then you've had a taste of it too. Yeah its a pretty special region and I feel quite lucky to have had so much time to explore it so much.
Incredible reef shots Vernon. Precision job getting out of that anchorage, as you said a different story with any wind!
Thanks Meredith, yep I certainly waited for the right day to leave.
Awesome. Did not go unnoticed that when you were collecting your lines you were racing against the clock before the drone battery ran out.
Yeah for sure. I had 20 min of safe time to get it all done before I had to start thinking about getting the drone back. Would have been easier with 2 people for sure but I enjoy challenges. Thanks for watching.
Was in Misool area one year ago and I totally agree, that this is an absolute stuning place and it makes me cry to see your video because I miss it so much, especially during this whole corona crap. DIscovered your videos some days ago. Great stuff, that remindes on better times.
Glad you enjoyed it BOB. welcome to my channel and I hope my videos will take you mind off the craziness in our current world for a bit.
Visually stunning place. Nice to see healthy reefs. And capturing the untying of the lines was epic!
Amazing place, cant wait to visit again in May
Very cool video , top onder water film work !!!!!!
Simply brilliant. Well done mate.
Love your work!
Bloody awesome. I think this is one of your best yet.
Wow, really amazing place Vernon!
Awsome video mate, living the life 👍
Fantastic episode!
Stunning, the reef there looks mind blowing
Best, most epic anchorage yet! I don't think even the most creative cgi designers could create such a place.
Yep, blew me away. Every day I'd wake up and wonder what planet I was on.
Grew up in that hemisphere. Totally enjoy the EYE IN THE SKY footages!
Thanks Kevin.
So cool. Thanks
almost fell from my chair watching the last bit while you untie the ropes
amazing
Good that you watching one till the end finally.
Stellar underwater footage. 🇨🇦
Great remote Raja , cheers amigo, bests
You are growing my list of places to visit. 😉
Mate, nailed it..
Drones are so amazing and a genius navigation tool.
Yep, my eyes in the sky.
Amazing Browww!!!!!
Beautiful footage!
Thanks
Mate, thanks again for such an awesome video. Easily my fave sailing youtuber by far. I love getting to see you explore all these different cultures and sharing with us
Thanks mate, really appreciate that.

awesome place, nicely filmed, thanks
Cheers David.
Nice one mate! We are loving your videos. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.
Thanks guys.
what a great place !!! enjoy every minute of your video ... Incredible you managed to set two lines ashore on your own !!! Cheers and fair winds !!
Thanks for watching. I took me a while to figure it all out but once I had a system it wasn't too difficult. Thats what I love about solo sailing, you have to make things work somehow.
Thanks So much for sharing. Amazing place. Glad you got the underwater stuff. Incredible.
Thanks for watching Caroline
great self sufficiency ! love the footage
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching
Wow ... that place is awesome! ... beautiful. Great job with filming it.
Thanks Rajesh
Absolutely amazing! What a place - Misool!!! I love your videos - you are down-to-earth and have a refreshing way of sharing your experiences in epic places that I may never ever see.
Cheers Jonathan
Lovely
Great video, amazing place. Thank you.
Thanks for watching
Absolutely beautiful amazing place, mind blowing underwater video. Thanks for sharing lovely time of yours with Mother Nature. I wish mother bless us too with her love soon, the same as she did with you.
Thanks Aamir. Yeah its a magical place for sure.
Heyy, i really like your videos, you really do have a talent for pictures and video. Inspiring stuff, its all about the adventure of life! Found your channel two weeks ago, and now i have watched from episode 71 until now. Guess i have to watch from the beginning now ;)
Cool, thanks for jumping in. My story might become more clear as you watch some the older stuff. Either way, welcome and thanks for watching.
Pristine reef, great underwater artwork ! Quality stuff. Thx for taking us with you on your adventure ! What are the noises at 3.15 mins ? and did you record them ?
One of your best video ... AMAZING!!! Thanks a lot👍
Thanks
Sweet!!!!
Wow. This really does seem like one of the most gorgeous places on the planet. Thank you for capturing it so beautifully, and sharing it with us.
Thanks Nick
Great story. This video feels genuine compared to the other sailing channels out there. Keep it up!
Thank you! Will do!
Incredible. That last part was a lesson in orchestration and film making and seamanship! Thanks for sharing your world with us.
Thanks Donal. The exit out of the bay was pretty hectic but I thought it was worth it to put the drone up as it would be pretty hard to explain otherwise. It all worked out perfect.
Another amazing video😍 I hope one day I will do the same thing ;) Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks! I hope you will too
I will sail their someday and didn’t even know it existed until you thanks bro👍👍
Do it!
Great job man, great life...cheers from Italy...Fair Winds :-)
Thanks Stefano
Great video. I watched a BBC documentary filmed in Raja and they sent their drone up and discovered sea-lakes actually inside some of the islands. They scrambled over a dived them. So brilliant and a couple of degrees warmer than the open sea. Maybe you can find some and five them, only a handful of people on earth have done it. Also, I heard if you play music in the boat it attracts whales and dolphins. Keep rolling dude...you’re a legend.
Hi, yeah I've seen a few of those lakes from the drone. The water looks very dark so I've never been motivated to get in. Maybe next season I'll give it a crack
Sailing Learning By Doing Hi. Yeah go for it. The scramble over the rocks was tricky as they’re v sharp but seemed worth it as they reckoned they might be the first people on the planet to snorkel there. Amazing. Here’s the link to the BBC documentary with Gordon Buchanan. He’s a pretty decent nature filmmaker for the BBC. The Raja part of the film begins at 28:40. Hope you enjoy it.
www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0005wxg/equator-from-the-air-series-1-3-pacific
If the link doesn’t work the program is called Equator from the Air. Episode 3.
SV Delos camped on the beach years ago. Pretty cool to see it again.
Ah cool, I didn't see that one, I'll have to go check it out.
@@SailingLearningByDoing They had a b-day party for Kazza if I'm remember correctly. I'll see if I can dig it up later and link it for you. Loving the content, I'm so close to blowing up my life and buying a boat and going down a different path.
Cool, thanks. Follow your heart
@@SailingLearningByDoing Found it! ua-cam.com/video/RmWcJivLNP4/v-deo.html
8:16 omg 😍 I wish I could see something like that for myself...
Wouw so much awe doing this by yourself, i have a small sailboat (6mtr) and sail solo.
Parking, anchoring and leave again when youre by yourself is a huge challange, scares me every time.
Thanks for watching. Yeah its a challenge for sure but thats why I love it. Each new challenge gives you more experience and you then use that for future difficult situations.
Hi Vernon , this is Gerard we meet in Meti last year , awesome video , will add these islands to my list :) In now in sorong after spending 3 weeks in Raja Ampart , small world :)
Hi Gerard. Have a good time in RA? I'm in Europe now till Late April.
Solid vid. Solid mo. Thanks for the viewing mate!!🤙🤙🤙⛵⛵⛵
Thanks mate
Since you mention reading books I thought I'd mention a few great sea stories. Sea Wolf - Jack London, Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad, The Old Man and the Sea - Earnest Hemingway, Two Years Before the Mast - Richard Henry Dana, Shackleton's Incredible Voyage - Alfred Lansing, and the poem Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge.
Thanks for that. I've read a c0uple of them but I'll have look for the others.
@@SailingLearningByDoing I have been a great reader once upon a time and I used to love sharing what I've read, so here's some other stories. Dry Guillotine by Rene Belbenoit, a true story of a youth convicted of stealing in France and sent to Devil's Island off the coast of Central America. The book that Papillon was based on. Chilling, raw, amazing survival story. The Story of San Michel by Axel Munthe, just a great read. Crime and Punishment and the Devils by Dostoyevsky. Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Do you have any great reads you'd like to share?
Great video I'm working on doing the same!
quiting dayjob, bought boat!! and will visit it, just taged it on Google earth, thanks Mate. Did i tell you i got myself a 40ft wharram and going to spend next 2 years getting it ready to do same as you.
Awesome Kai! That rad mate, congrats.
I can’t wait to get out there and perhaps hang out with you. I’ll probably come via catamaran😜
Let me know when you set off.
10:15 wow that moon shot though
omg that mustache in the beginning!
Picobello
I have had good success with the cheapo Chinese HD Sports Cams with the Water boxes, got to have GoPros...but until one is comfortable doing aerial Vid, like Drones, there are less expensive options, then when ya get confident, then bring out the SPENDY GoPro. this footage is absolutely Top Shelf....and I did not know a Boat moves around that much in such a short time, the time it takes to fetch the Bowline.
Thanks Freddy. I've ordered a cheap action cam and will see how it goes.
Loved that. Really loved that. What am I doing with a mortgage again?
Making banks richer.
I love this video mate, i'm leaving from Montreal in June aiming for Jobi near Sorong. needles to say your videos are really of interest for me... keep at it rgds
Hi Steeve. Glad you finding them interesting. You're sailing from Montreal?

Do you have a SCUBA tank on board....for emergencies, like freeing the anchor from a bad snag in deep water? As you show, that is a tough area to keep a boat put, and off the rocks. Your Subs are growing quickly. Nice work.
HI Patrick. Nope, I dont have a scuba tank, maybe its something I should invest in. I can free dive to 25m if necessary and always put a trip line on the front of the anchor up to a float when over 20m deep.
Thanks, yeah the solo sailing videos always seem to do well.
Another awesome video thanks for sharing your journey. What visa do you get for each visit to Indonesia, I know they have a rather strict policy if you wish to stay longer than 30 days
Cheers Rex. I think the visa I get is called a 211A. Its 60 days then 4 x 30 days extendable. 6 months in total. Its pretty easy to get at your local embassy before departure.
Pretty amazing on your own! And yes, I'd leave my day job and sell up in a flash - would need to get divorced first! And ... we're currently in lockdown in Sydney so can't leave our local area/city/country!
PS: You could have used a stern anchor to keep you away from the walls!
Doing that sort of thing in a "flash" normally leads to bad decisions. Better make some plans a year or two out
Super hard though, over 100m deep everywhere, walls are the only option.
@@SailingLearningByDoing I meant the first anchorage where you had a bow anchor out ...
Hi Vernon, I am no action camera expert, but just purchased an Akaso (mid to low end range). Been fairly impressed with its capabilities, comes with a waterproof case (good to 13m) that is quite robust but not too bulky, as the camera itself is not waterproof. If nothing else it would be a good backup option. From the corp blurb the company is trying to make a name for themselves, so may be worth contacting them?
Hi Leo. Thanks for the tip, I'll look them up for sure.
Hi Vernon, if you don’t mind me asking, why the name Schiehallion?
I only ask because it’s the name of a Munro in Perthshire Scotland that I am familiar with and not a name commonly used that I am aware of.
By the why great vids, helping keep us land lubbers / arm chair enthusiast dreams alive.
Hey Sandy. The boat had the name when I brought it. The guy who built the boat named her as his son was at the time in Scotland studying and had just climbed up to the peak. Theres a little shield on the boat with a piece of granite from the peak.
Sailing Learning By Doing, there was a school there called Rannoch, on loch Rannoch, Schiehallion is close by. Do you remember the name, age, or other of whom you bought it off? Rannoch school bred some unique individuals. In my sailing days I met ex pupils from Germany in Fremantle WA and 1 from the Seychelles in the back blocks of Indo, just by coincidence. This is the first connection from sitting in my middle age arm chair! You have a special boat.
The man who had a boat build is Jon Smyth. His son was studying in Edinburgh I think and did an expedition with some class mates.
your videos in indonesia, should be in netflix
Glad you think that. I think the editing would need to be a lot tighter for general viewing.
@@SailingLearningByDoing i loves the story telling in your video
@@Fankui thanks, it's something I'm still trying to improve on.
Next time, use a LONG rope so you can go to shore and back to the boat with it. If you do that you can stay onboard and loosen the tampers. That´s what I do.
HI Johan. Nah, that doesn't work down here. The rock is limestone and sharp like razors, you cant slide rope on it at all. I used plastic hoses as rope protection around the rock pillars.
@@SailingLearningByDoing Ok :)
Amazing video. How do you deal with the solitude? After awhile, doesn't it get to you? Would be easier with a mate? Or would they just get in the way? Does it take time to settle in the rhythm? Love your videos. I put 50.00 bucks in your crusing kitty! Enjoy my friend. Thank you for inspiring me.
Hi Allan and thanks for the great donation! I like the solitude. During winter I never get a moment alone(which I also enjoy) so when summer comes around I'm more than happy to slow everything down. 2020 season I'll be having company on the boat though. For actual sailing I find it much easier on my own as I can sail instinctively and not worry about others.
Quit the job. Start sailing.
Divorce was forgotten somewhere between...
Great video by the way 👍
True story
Hi Vernon,
Listened to your podcast with David on the Ocean Sailing Podcast and you mentioned some chinese app for navigation. Can you please tell me the name of it? Cheers.
Hey Rene
The app is called Ovital Map
@@SailingLearningByDoing cheers mate.
Would you ever consider a Texan coming on board with you I'm experienced sailor actually own a Morgan 383 sitting in bahia del sol elsalvador on mooring right now if you're interested at all I'm game would love to sail in that part of the world thanks mate cheers from Texas s/v oceancowboy
Hi James. I've never had a Texan aboard but I've for sure got nothing against the idea.
whats the story of how to eat coconuts, is it that you can only eat/drink one per day because of the electrolyte load or being a diuretic or something like that?
No problem, I sometimes drink 4-5 per day, cant go wrong. I just cant carry that many on the boat so for a 2 week trip I get 15 and have 1 per day
Who is the diver in the bottom part of the screen at 16.41 ?
Ha!! i am going to buy a boat and sail there..... need to learn how to sail first... but it will happen.
Mate its easy as, sailing that is. Buy a good boat, sail around your own area for a while and off you go. Common sense, stubbornness and some mechanical ability will help a lot too;)
Sailing Learning By Doing I’m a carpenter by trade, I’m a handy guy but I don’t want to buy a boat that needs a load of work. It’s daunting but it’s a lifetime ambition of mine to sail across ocean’s. Still trying to work out how to make it happen.
Yeah I get that and its the right approach. The amount of time and money people spend one doing up old boats is crazy. Wait for a good boat that someone has already spent all the money on and be ahead of the game.
