      Yeah my thoughts exactly. The less complicated systems the more time I can actually enjoy sailing and exploring not trying to source parts from far-away places. Thanks for watching.

    Very cool that you had the opportunity to meet the boat builders and got to attend the launch. Really enjoyed this video and your approach to sailing and living. Thanks for tour ... clearly you were destined to be the captain of this beautiful ship. Cheers !!!

      Glad you enjoyed it! I didn't see the original launch of the boat in 2006 though. I think there might have been sone fate involved in me owning this beautiful boat as she was well above my budget and it somehow worked out.

    Awesome boat! That construction style with cedar, glass, and Kevlar around the keel and where waves bash the hull....that's awesome! I've never ever heard of such a construction design. You got so lucky to get that boat for cheap! That thing hauls ass, 187.5 miles per day??? That's insane for a monohull! Congratulations on getting the best most perfect boat for your needs and personality!

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks, yeah she's a sweet boat, design and construction are top notch. Yeah most boats have a "keel stepped mast" but they dont actually go into the keel. Mine sits on a solid pad on top of the matrix, right where the keel is bolted to the hull.
      We recently did 375nm in 48 hours, not maxing out either as my girlfriend was pretty crook the whole way, coulda gone faster. Love this boat.

    A real nice boat. The fridge and freezer is a tad small for distance cruising but then again if you are going for that then you may not be to adverse to freeze dried food and other dry goods. Good on you for getting such a nice gem and for putting it to good use as well. Thanks for sharing!

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  4 роки тому

      Cheers David. Yeah there are plus and minus's to everything. The freezer is big enough for me but could do with a bigger fridge. But then I would need more electricity, which means more solar and big batteries or a generator. I'm pretty happy with the compromise.

      The way our economies are set up there is no limit to how much, it just needs to be MORE. Every company these days uses the word "sustainable" somewhere in their marketing spiel but its total BS. There is nothing sustainable about continual growth

    Recently came across your channel and just binge watched the lot. Great job mate; interesting and informative. Better keep a weather eye on the horizon though for the fleet of angry catamaraners that have left port and are hunting you down. The day to day stuff is not boring; it is interesting so don't worry about that. I started sailing when I was about 8 in Mirror dinghies in Cornwall, 60 now, and have since sailed and raced cats. you know you're going for it when you are up on one hull I can tell you. Overtook a speedboat towing a skier once on the Vaal dam; you should've seen their faces. All the best from South Africa and Safe cruisin'.

      Hahah, cheers Tim. Thats a good effort to get through all those videos. Nah, I''ll be safe as, the cats mostly stick to the coast;) I'm just messing around, I've never even sailed a Cat but there is always so much niggle between cat and mono owners, I just like to dig a little as I think its a dumb argument. What makes you happy and allows you to be out on the water. There is no perfect solution. There's a 2000 Sayer 43 for sale right now for $362,747!!! I have no clue what you paid for you boat but I'd guess you didn't pay more than....I have no idea.
    What did you pay for your boat? I've never seen a boat built as high quality as your boat. I'm sure they're out there, but I've never seen a boat run wood, fg, and kevlar construction. That's just amazing. Good job finding that boat Vernon!! When I'm buying my boat I'll definitely tell the current owner that I'm going to sail the world and make UA-cam videos and hope they'll drop the price! Thank you for that!

      Yeah there are 2-3 Sayers for sale in Australia at the moment and all very expensive. During covid the boat market there has gone nuts, almost no boats left on the market and the prices have all gone up 50% or more. I could sell mine now for double what I paid for it. That one you mention is 6 ft bigger than mine but also 6 years older. Crazy price. Its a nice boat with Carbon rig and sails but they would sell it for more than $160k i think.

    Great video mate. I’m jealous. As you know I thought about buying her too. You’ve done an awesome job making her your own.

      Hi Graeme, had you told me that? Guess I forgot. Well I'm sort of glad you decided not to buy her as I would have ended up with much less of a boat.

      @@SailingLearningByDoing Hi Vernon, I think I mentioned it in a comment once before when you first got her. I am more of a multihull guy so decided to keep going down that path.. I'm not sure if you've seen my channel - ua-cam.com/channels/ZY3s9n7WO8xtni-qx5km7Q.htmlvideos It's mainly racing around Moreton Bay. some cruising.. It's not my boat my mate owns it I just get to sail it - and work on it... hahaha

    Great tour! The carvings aren't sea snakes. They're Celtic knots, well known where i'm from in Wales and the rest of the Celtic countries like Ireland and Scotland ;)

      Thanks for that Daniel. Makes total sense as the boats name is Schiehallion, highest peak in Scotland.

    I noticed the hull registration number on the bulkhead above the LOA and was wondering if the boat was originally registered in Ontario Canada? Same format as my boat reg no. I’m guessing not since you mentioned the boat was built in Australia, owned by an Australian and then purchased again by yourself, an Australian.

      Interesting but no, this boat has never been to Canada. All Australian apart from me, I was born in NZ

    1st rate vid and first I've seen of yours. Having lived on a inland waterways boat for ten years, done that..and now living on land but metres from the beach. Now I'm curious about the sea so look looking forward to seeing the outside of your boat. Looks like a sweet ride.
